My son and I enjoyed this site, though was pretty crowded over the weekend. No problems with checking in. We were on the lower part of the field which was level enough for us, though finding a spot at least 6m from the next tent was difficult. We thought the facilities were very good. There was a choice of at least 2-3 shower / toilet blocks within easy reach, one of them was a bit old but the other two were spacious and kept very clean. The shop was also good, though beware the very large gobstoppers! My son picked one up, and as it looked identical to one of those bouncy power balls, dropped it onto the floor to see how high it would come back. As you can guess, it did not bounce at all, so felt obliged to buy it. It could double up as a multi-coloured snooker ball if you were pushed. The immediate area is great for a weekend away, the cycle route from Monmouth to Symond's Yat along the river was very good. The cycleways in the Forest of Dean itself are also worth doing. We also drove over to the Brecon Mountain steam railway, (about 45mins drive), recommended on a sunny day, great scenery.

On arrival there was a large queue to check in. Did so after 15m wait. I had paid for a premium pitch as I wanted electric, but these spots were shared with 4 other people, which were all caravan users. The position was rubbish, no shade, and on a slope. Camping next to a rusty old mondeo and a clapped out old caravan - no thanks I moved to the edge of the forest and made do with no electric. Why wasn't there electric in these decent spots. So a bad start to the holiday, but a pretty site, however the play area was a little bit of a dissapointment, as were the loos and showers. The loo block near me only had 2 traps, and constantly stunk of urine. I managed to shower on one day when the water was not COLD, and the entire cubicle was left in a puddle afterwoods. No were to dry off properly - not good. The toilets and the showers badly let down this could be attractive campsite. I would plump for bracelands next time because there was more room, but dogs are allowed here. I was lured by the 'forest holidays' experience, but I am sure there are better sites in this very attractive area. On the whole an average site.

What a fab site, clean, spacious, friendly staff and well stocked shop. Its so quiet and relaxing there. I will definitely be visiting again. The toilet blocks were always clean and empty, not much to do there but you make your own fun. Lots of walking and cycling if your interested and a lovely park for the children.

Just spent a lovely week on Christchurch site. The campsite is pleasant we camped on the first part nearest the shop and it was indeed very sloping. The 6m apart rule doesn't appear to apply to tents but again not really a problem. The shop is well stocked and the fresh bread and croissants were delicious, quite handy on the last day as it saved on washing up! I must agree with other comments that lady on reception was quite disagreeable. She gave me a right roasting when I arrived because I had not provided copies of the confirmation letter to the other 3 members of the party (not that they had provided a copy each). She had also given the first member of the party a telling off and told them they couldn't come on site until I arrived with the letter. Not the welcome you want after a long journey!
Anyway, everything else was fine (even the weather). The showers are fine but not quite warm enough for me, but I never had to queue for more than a few minutes. It's a great location in terms of scenery and things to do. A word of warning on the route the AA Routefinder directed us via Symonds Yat which is not a good plan when towing! I would recommend this site to anyone wanting a relaxing holiday it seems very popular with groups of friends with families.

As newcomer to camping I decided to visit this site after finding it on UK Campsite. I set out with my three year old and 'never out of the bag' tent, with the understanding that we'd drive home if it was a disaster. The site is set next to woodland in a very quiet setting. We chose a spot next to the adventure playground but still within easy reach of the toilets, washing up and showers. There was plenty of space. The facilities were excellent, they were clean and regularly checked and the water very hot. The shop was open early and stayed open until late, stocking everything you could possibly need if you'd forgotten anything. The staff there were very helpful and seemed to be at hand throughout the day. The surrounding area was breathtaking. We walked down to the Bracelands site and through the forest and had a lovely time. We're definitely going again soon and for longer next time. The website directions leave a little to be desired though and these could do with updating with possibly more signs near the site.

August 2005 I have been visiting this site since the age of 3 and I am now in my early 30's so they must be doing something right!
We stayed for a long weekend with our new caravan on EHU and had no problems at all - we did trip the post a couple of times but a quick flip of the switch and we were up and running again. The facilities are great, loos clean and showers hot - if not a little too hot if you are the only one in there! The shop is good but to be honest we never really buy much more than a paper anyway.
Reception is busy and too small but that has always been the case. The new security gate was a surprise - you have to pay a £5 refundable deposit for a key but they had no choice as someone released some wild pigs into the forest recently and the camp safety was compromised so they put the gates in.
We love this site - always have and suspect I always will. My husband and toddler agree too so it can't be bad.
Oh yes, and there is a great pub just through the trees at the back of the site - the King's Head (the King of Spain) where you can get good ale and good food. Worth a visit. Remember to take a torch for coming back!

August 2005 This was our third family camping trip with three young children. We went here mainly for its closeness to Bristol but also for its previously good reviews on this site. We were delighted with the efficiency of the whole thing, I booked via phone on the Friday lunch time and rolled up a few hours later. We paid our £5 for the security gate and were told to pitch anywhere as long as you are a minimum of 6 mtrs from another tent. The site is spotless, yob free and quiet. We particulary enjoyed the dog free environment. The kids loved the small but excellent play area and we enjoyed the nearby spectacular scenery of the Forest of Dean. This isnt a site to come to if you want the high life but if you enjoy good old fashioned family fun and a several spotlessly clean loo blocks, this is the place for you. Happy camping.

June 2005 We have been back to this site 6 times since the May Bank Holiday and we love it! Excellent facilities with all you need on site including a well stocked shop with camping goods etc. Children well catered for and absolutely beautiful surroundings. Also, we are not dog lovers so it's a plus for us it's a dog free site.
I was amused to see the other comments regarding the reception staff as we too have experienced their 'I'm very busy manner'. However, the rest of the staff could not be more friendly and helpful.
We are hoping to get at least another two trips in before Tent season officially closes!

August 2005 This is a fantastic campsite! We recently stayed for a long weekend - a last minute decision but a great choice. It is worth noting 2 points though...1) You need to pay a refundable deposit of £5.00 to get a key for the electric gates put there because of point 2.... 2) There are WILD PIGS in the neighbourhood about which you are advised upon check-in. There are also loads of grey squirrels on the site who have perfected the art of stealing any food left visable and disappearing... well, like a squirrel up a tree! The onsite shop is brilliant, stocking everything and anything - we forgot our airbed and a bike lock and found both in the shop at very reasonable prices. They have freshly baked bread and croissants in the morning which is a great treat. The staff were friendly and always helpful. We did note however that Friday evening check-in was hectic with lots of queues - we got there on Friday luchtime and checked-in immediately. The site is on a hill with the hook ups at the top and the majority of tents at the lower end, which is more level. You choose your own space as long as you leave 6m between yourself and others. The showers and toilets were always clean, lots of hot water and virtually no waiting around. The only let down was the lack of a hairdrier or facilities to use your own which didn't go well with "going out", or children with wet hair!
It is an ideal base for cycling - but you need to drive 10 mins to use the family cycle trail (parking £2.00all day, but get there before 11am!). To note, go CLOCKWISE around the trail as you only have 4miles of uphill and 7miles of downhills and level cycling! The kiosk near the end of the trail sells much welcomed ice-creams! The whole family enjoyed our stay especially the kids (11,6,3 yrs) who enjoyed the freedom, play area and the dog free site. This is a good site to recommend to couples, groups of friends and families alike, as you are asked not to disturb others between 10pm and 8am so the atmosphere stayed friendly! As novice campers this trip has most certainly given us the camping bug!

July 2005 We've stayed at this site about 5 times over the last 3 years, as we have family who live nearby. The shop is well stocked, the showers are hot and cleaned regularly. Theres plenty of shower/toilet blocks and dish washing facilities available. All hot water is free and always available and we've never had to que, even when the site is busy. They have recently introduced a key system for the main gates, this means you have to pay a refundable £5 deposit for a key to open the electric barrier to get into the site.
The pitches are ok, some are on slopes but there are a few flatter areas nearer the play area, we've never had trouble finding one, although it can get busy there at peak times and the pitch areas are not marked out.
The wardens are always on hand, to help out if you need them. The area surrounding the site is beautiful especially Symonds Yat (Saracens Head pub is worth a visit, good food) there are a few canoe hire centres in the area...basically theres loads to do, there are also lots of walks and its not unusual to see a squirrel or rabbit on the site, which is great fun for the kids.
My only moan, would be that at busy times the booking in desk gets very busy and has at times seemed quite disorganised, with some staff not being as helpful as they possibly could be. But apart from that, its a good site and we will be going there for many years to come.
