Visited this site in the October half term. Lovely site in beautiful surroundings. Great walks in the forest, to Symonds rock and down to the river Wye. From there you can cycle into Monmouth along the river on a flat trail, fab for kids.
Not particularly flat pitches but we were able to find a reasonably level one that didn't cause any problems.
Reception staff extremely helpful.
The toilets very very old and in need of modernisation, in fact this is the only thing that let the site down along with the disabled facilities. The toilet / shower was down an overgrown path with no lighting whatsoever. A health and safe concern I would say.
The cafe is nice, with a well stocked shop, although very pricey. Coleford 5 minutes away, where you can find a tesco express, co op etc. Also lots of nice pubs to eat in.
We had a fab day at the go ape in the forest of dean, the actual visitor centre a good 10 minute drive away from the site, as is the cycle centre at cannop. From here loads of fantastic trails suitable for all abilities. We did the blue trail - venderers trail which was fantastic. Our 7 year old daughter loved it even with jumps, bumps and berms. If was really good fun.
We also had a nice day out at puzzle wood, note to moms wellies required if it has been raining.
Overall a lovely site that we will probably return too, although have previously stayed at the other site Bracelands and this has far more spectacular views than Christchurch. Will have to give a low rating for facilities and alue for money given the need to upgrade the toilets and showers.

We stayed for 1 night in Spetember on the way to Wales (or so we thought until the high winds forced us down to Devon. Oh never mind eh?!).
We found this campsite pretty and the facilities did the trick. It took a while to level the van on the pitch but otherwise all was good. It was a tad pricey though. We have tended to avoid forest campsites in the past precisely because of the high cost, but it seemed like a nice place to be so we tried this one.
The shop is rather posh and the cafe is a nice touch - very cosy on a chilly drizzly windy day! When we arrived, the receptionist didn't have a price list so we had to give our details in order for her to enter us into her computer to find out how much it cost to pitch up! Perhaps this was an indication of how much it really was going to cost us!
We went for a lovely long walk to Symonds Yat and then around the woods and back to campsite - lovely easy well marked trails
Overall this was a good site but overpriced in comparison to other good sites that we have stayed at!

We went as a party of 16 (4 families) thus we paid for 4 pitches, 1 caravan and 3 tents. We managed to get pitched together mainly because the caravan had already spent a bit of time there and managed to put by some space for us.
Also we turned up early. Bank Holiday weekend you would expect to be busy - yes it was busy but not overally busy (due to the fact thunderstorm Friday which probably put off some campers from coming away).
We pitched at top of site away from play area, which was not flat, but we had more space than the bottom of the site next to the playarea.
Queues for showers and washing up facilities but to be expected so we varied our times to do these things which was OK. Showers very hot but free. When I tried to cool the temperature the water ceased spraying so I had to grin and bear it and have a very HOT SHOWER. So decided son (9) could only have flannel wash as would be burned if he decided to shower.
Staff friendly enough though did notice the small camp truck did not adhere to the 5mph speed limit! And a few customers didn't either so glad we pitched away from the road. Great location for walking to Symonds Yat.
The kids even did some climbing with ropes which they thoroughly enjoyed. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would love to go back even with the negative points.
But the location sells it to us. Shame there is no freezer to put ice packs in for free. Lots of huge groups of people hence could be a little noisy at night but by 11pm most groups have quietened down.
Lots of activity at 7am though - think lots of people rushing to get to the front of the shower queue! Shame about the weather but hey this is Bank Holiday! Would we go back? Yes and only for a short break, couldn't manage a week.

A large campsite where you can choose your pitch, not particularly flat pitches, electric hook-up pitches are not too spacious, but adequate just feel a little close to your neighbours.
As we've found with other forest holiday sites the toilet facilities are a little dated and in need of some investment.
As always lots of nice walks from their campsites, however in this case they could do with better sign posting and maps, very easy to get on the wrong track.
Shop and reception very nice and modern, kind of feel like the investment on these sites has gone to places utilised by the cabin customers, perhaps a little in the camping facilities would be nice.
Obviously a popular site, although unlikely to re-visit as not close enough to the river for us.

We spent a week on this site and enjoyed it. The toilet block was rather old, but I was impressed with the showers, as you could control both the temperature and the flow, and you did not have to push a button every 20 seconds ( however the lights are on timers and went out whilst I was in the shower once! )
The shop is quite posh and nothing was priced, which I found off putting, as it looked expensive. It is in a very nice reception block which also has a café and was open all day till dusk.
We had booked an electric hook up pitch, but the pitches are not marked out or allocated, you just go and choose somewhere. Unfortunately this resulted in people who were not using electricity, but pitching by the hook up, so preventing others using it.
When we arrived it was very busy, so it was difficult to find a pitch. Many of the pitches are sloping so go prepared, as when we asked if they had any bricks or planks to help level our van, they looked surprised by the request ( although we found some bricks in a skip on the site. )
There are walks and cycle rides in the forest straight from the site, so we did not have to take the car out much. There are keypad controlled gates to enter and leave the site, the code changes on Sunday, but we were not told this, despite arriving on a Saturday!
Overall I liked this site and the area, despite the little niggles I have mentioned.

The campsite is in a wonderful location and there is lots to do in the area.
Our daughter especially enjoyed visiting Perrygove which is about 10 mins away.
The shop was really quite expensive and we went to coleford and used Tesco.
The main downside we found was the shower/toilet facilities which really let this campsite down, and I was not the only person to think this. The showers do have plenty of warm water but they are cramped and we had to queue everyday. They are also quite tired looking and could do with a major re-vamp!
There is a children's playground which is ok but not really suitable for younger children.
Some of the EHU points can be some distance away and unlike other sites we have visited you could not hire longer leads.
Would we visit again? The area without a doubt, this campsite? not until the showers have had a good makeover!

We stayed here on our honeymoon for 5 days as a one off change to where we take most of our holidays in the forest at cannock.
The site was fine but not outstanding in most areas.
Facilities dated & in desperate need of a re-fit being the biggest negative.
Forest walks in many but by no means all directions & quite steep paths in places, village close by but not sure if there's a pub as didn't venture in.
We love holidaying in the forests but site felt just too big, lacked charm, character & that wow factor.
Many of the forest trails didn't lead back to the site without dropping hundreds of feet leading to heaven knows where so ended up doubling back on occasions going over the same ground a number of times.
Not the worst site we've stayed at but we've definitely stayed at better sites in better locations with better facilities so doubt we'll return to Christchurch in a hurry.

We stayed here for 3 nights at the end of a bank holiday weekend. It was busy but still space around our pitch.
As said in some of the other reviews the washrooms are a bit tired but clean and lovely hot water in the showers. The site is very close to the forest and we did some great walks to the river and back.
Great place for orienteering because several permanent courses (easy to quite challenging) start from the camp site.
Not so good for cycling because you need to keep to the main forest tracks for vehicles and can't use any of the lovely forest trails.
Overall a very nice site and one we will return to.

Just returned from a six night stay. Campsite was very busy with it being Whitsun. As we were camping with friends finding two hook up pitches together was difficult.
Location of site is lovely, lots of forest walks, ideal for dog walking.
Toilet facility's are a little dated but were always clean with plenty of hot water, soap & toilet tissue. One major problem was that the hand drier didn't work, this could have been easily rectified by paper towels (seen from recent reviews been broken for some time).
Shop was well stocked although a little expensive, Morrisons in Ross on Wye or Lidl 5 mins away are a good alternative.
Site warden very helpful and seen around site often. Reception staff very friendly & helpful.
Overall we had a lovely weekend and will go again, although must admit my 15 year old son did get a little bored. There is a small play area for younger children. Simmons Yat is worth a walk to approx. 2 miles from campsite, great views & small coffee shop.

We visited this campsite on the recommendation of my brother in law, who had visited it earlier in the year. We weren't disappointed. Situated in the Forest of Dean, this is a neat, family friendly campsite. We camped for 3 nights over a bank holiday weekend. The campsite got busy, but not overcrowded during this time, and I thought the pricing was very reasonable.
There are plenty of toilets and showers, and these are kept very clean. There were a few problems whilst we were there with toilets overflowing when you flushed (good job I was wearing boots!) but these were fixed quickly. No problem getting a shower either; these were free and there was plenty of hot water.
There's a good little play park on site too, which is good for children of around 8 and under.
There's a nice shop on site, which is a little on the pricey side. One of the best things about the shop, however, is that they do hot food including pizzas. My brother in law said the pizzas were great; unfortunately we didn't get to try them as a 'short walk' through the forest got us home after they'd stopped serving (8pm). So bear that in mind if you want pizza, best not to follow me into the woods!
The proximity to the forest is the best thing about the site. It's so easy to get out there for a nice walk. It's only a couple of miles to Symond's Yat, with wonderful views over the river, and the paths are well maintained and signposted. We had a great time walking through the forest squirrel spotting, and even saw a dormouse (though no wild boar, to my intense disappointment!).
Waking up to the sound of birdsong each morning was bliss.
Locally there's plenty to do. We went in to Monmouth where we got the best sausages ever from the butchers, and had a nice walk up to the castle and around this cute old village. There are also watersports available close by on the river, and plenty of nice walks in the forest for walkers of all levels of fitness.
The forest lodges look really nice too.
Really family friendly, well run campsite. Would definitely come back here some time.
