The site itself and the area were lovely - we walked to Symonds Yat and back on one day and had a delicious pub lunch (Saracens Head). This was all on forestry paths and was level other than the steps at the end down from Yat Rock - the children in the group 7y, 7y and 5y all managed the 6 mile round trip (3y old was carried).
Lots of toilets, showers etc, with hot water at all times for washing up etc and a shop for all basics.
Only downside was they were busy being half term and seemed to be short staffed with only one lady on reception at checking in time - hence a queue. And often only one in the shop (had run out of ice creams/lollies by Thursday). The staff were doing the best they could, but just needed more of them! Toilet blocks also got a bit messy due to this.
The site felt safe enough that we could let the older two go off to the play area by themselves. Would recommend bringing bikes if you are staying more than a couple of days as loads more to explore around the area.

Went over the bank holiday so not sure if this is what this place is normally like- I hope not! Just a note of advice, you need rock pegs on this pitch
PROS
Nice location The facilities were kept, for the days they had staff on, clean Close to local shops and attractions Nice walks in the woods Nice play park for the kids
CONS
Paid for an electric premium pitch but there is no difference between pitches and felt conned There was no regulation of where campers went so you could take a 'premium pitch' without knowing or, conversely, knowing The pricing was all over the place each member of the party paid a different amount for the same holiday Despite the warning to keep your distance between tents they must have crammed as many people as they could on site Too many campers spread out too much taking up 2 or 3 pitches with their stuff. You had to be quick erecting your tent or risk the pitch being taken Too many tourers/cars moving about at speed and kids darting around on bikes not looking On the Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday there was only emergency staffing by phone (which they didn't answer) and the toilets ran out of tissue paper and soap There wasn't enough showers/toilets for the amount of campers on site- the queues were so long they stretched outside The freeze block facility was mean- you couldn't freeze your own blocks, you had to 'rent' theirs for 50p each and pay a £1 deposit The site was very noisy The customer service was lacking The shop was not that useful and overpriced- couldn't even get a small free/cheap map of the site and forest

After visiting this camp site thought I would drop in a review after a great time there.
> The facilities where fantastic. The shop was very good with all the stuff you need they also had food freshly made to order if you wanted also had a freezer you could store stuff if required.
> The showers and toilet block was also very good with lovely warm / hot showers. The only complain was that the block did start to smell late evening but during they day they where ok. The washing up area was good as well. There are 4 blocks in total I think.
> There was plenty to do for the children as it had a nice play park, you also got the forest for them to run around in or go for walks in. Be warned though the forest is huge so I would recommend bikes.
> As for local attractions etc, Why not visit the caves at coleman 2 miles away along with with puzzlewood, Or even visit monmouth 5 miles away.

Fantastic time over the Easter holidays. Facilities are very clean, although the shop is somewhat basic.
There are amazing woodland walks from this campsite and if you wanted, you would not need to use your car at all!
The staff are very friendly. I was dismayed to find some dog muck on site, but when I informed the manager, he cleaned it up straight away.
This is a beautiful site and I cannot recommend it highly enough!
My only reservation is that they are putting up more and more electric hookups and I for one do not want to be stuck in between a load of caravans!
But that said, this campsite really is a jewel!

Had a rather excellent Easter weekend at Christchurch with the bairns. First trip out with the new tent too. The weather was terrible, the site manager told us that come Saturday they were having to cancel people's bookings as the ground was becoming waterlogged and they were worried about damage to pitches. Can't blame him, it really was a wild Fri / Sat.
There was a few teething problems with the new electrical hookups but they were fixed quick smart. One of the toilet / wash blocks was out of action which was weather related too I believe.
All of the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful and made it a truly great weekend in spite of the weather. A great site for a weekend of walking, cycling etc and the terrific staff make it that wee bit special in my opinion.

Stayed here for a short break during Half Term! Very nice site, large pitches. Very helpful staff, booking in was a breeze! Toilets are clean & heated. One toilet block was closed but that didn't affect us! Nice children's play area. Lovely walks down to the river from the site. Beautiful scenery. Lovely time of year to visit as well with the trees in an array of colours! The Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail is well worth a visit. There is plenty to do in this area. Shops are a car journey away. Coleford is a nice little town! Would definitely return!

Had a great 3 days here at the end of October. Have to admit this type of large site is not the type of site I would usually go to, preferring smaller sites, but as it was the end of October decided to try a big site!
Firstly, it is a big site taking 280 units, and I think in August I would find it decidedly not to my taste, but it was very quiet when we went so we had a good time.
Reception was very efficient and we were told to pitch anywhere not in the ehu area, and were given a map. The receptionist also pointed out which toilet block was shut. This annoyed me slightly as when I had booked I had specifically asked if all the toilet blocks were going to be open and had been told 'yes'.
We found a really large area that we had to ourselves, and it was reasonably close to an open toilet block. Pitch was flat, and the grass on the entire site was in remarkably good condition.
This is a really beautiful part of the country with loads to do, and I would return to this site at a quiet time of year. We went to the local pub the Kings Head, (turn right out of Bracelands Drive and it is 400m on the left) where we and the dog received a very warm welcome and had a very nice bar meal. It was fab to find a pub that welcomed dogs.
Overall, this was a very nice site, the facilities were always clean and the staff helpful, although I couldn't help feeling that the facilities might be stretched when it was busy. For us in October it was perfect.

Nice open site surrounded by trees. Toilet and shower facilities were a bit tired but clean. We were told that they were to be refurbished in early 2010, so don't know if this has happened.
Staff were friendly and helpful and there was a well stocked shop on site. A bit over priced but extremely handy. There was no hot water in the washing up area but we were told we could get it from under the wash basin in the ladies toilet. This would also be fixed during the winter. Overall a good visit.

We actually used Bracelands which is the neighbouring site but part of the same overall camp site. Huge site but as it was nearly bank holiday weekend it was starting to get busy, though rules are that you have to keep a good distance from neighbours. Facilities were good, though on the busier friday saturday morning the showers ran out of water! Shop is well stocked, not terribly overpriced but a long walk up hill or drive! No park for kids but loads of space and walks. Area was lovely. Would visit again but avoid bank holidays! As camp sites go probably at the more expensive end but didn't seem to get anything extra for the cost.

Just returned from four days on this site, ok a couple of the toilet blocks need updating and one washing up area had only warm warmish water but who cares, the weather was brilliant for a change we took our youngest daughter and it was kid paradise! There were loads of them, mostly with bikes. All the adults in cars were really careful around the site and virtually everyone had their small people under control by 10 o'clock. This was just the kind of site we had looked for when taking just one of our three children away. The staff were helpful and friendly. We loved Puzzle Wood and the climbing wall at Beechenhurst Visitor Centre. I would recommend this site for children especially if they are old enough to have some freedom it is secure with gates on all the exits and not so big that you don't know where they are. Brilliant!
