We have been coming to this site for the past 6 years and have seen many improvements. The new reception and shop is currently being built which look like they will be brilliant (big log and glass cabin affair).
I agree with others, that the showers and toilets need a little attention, the newer block especially (there is an older block at the top of the hill which tends to be less used and subsequently is cleaner), however the water is erratic and runs from pleasantly warm to scolding hot (depends on how many toilets are flushed and sinks used whilst you are in there it seems), yes the water does pool in the shower, but a mop is provided and a sign does request that you use it
Agree with others about flat pitches, best to get there before midday and either go for the top of the hill or the bottom by the woods (nosier though as it is near the playground). Great for kids, take their bikes if you can and you will not see them all day.
The woodland rides are very good and well sign posted. Suggest the trail that starts at the bottom of the hill that takes you down to the river and along to Symonds Yat West, then follow the path up to Symonds Yat rock, takes around 2 1/2 -3 hours and can get quite steep sometimes, but then you are clambering around a river valley.
The shop is well stocked and now has an alcohol licence, and the prices are reasonable. Only real downsides, the temperature of the showers and can get a little noisy at night (not from the children I hasten to add, but inconsiderate adults).
If you have older children (6-16) and like a little bit of exercise, are prepared for slightly sloping pitches, and enjoy the woodlands, this is an excellent site. I would say the same of the sister site, Bracelands, but this one does not have the shop and it is a bit of trek from there to Christchurch (around 1/2 mile up hill).
Staff amazingly friendly, and facilities not that bad given the age of the site and the amount of use. Coleford is a 5 minute drive away with a Co-Op and Tesco metro, and for rainy days, Clearwell caves is only 20 minutes away and is quite good for staying dry in whilst the showers pass (around 18 pound for a family of 4 and very interesting).
Fairly remote area, but Monmouth is only 20 minutes away and Gloucester is only 1/2 hour, but this site is definitely designed for exercise and getting away from it all.Very child friendly and safe, pitches not cramped, and if the weather is good, then you could not wish for a more idyllic site.

Took a quick weekend break to this campsite. Location great for forest walks and cycle rides.
Staff were on the whole pretty unfriendly in the shop and around the site.
Toilet block was dirty and in need of an upgrade. Showers were poor, in one shower block on both mornings water pressure was terrible and only a trickle of water arrived! In the evening in the lower block water pressure was fine but as other reviewers have mentioned the drains don't work so you are standing in a couple of inches of someone else's shower water. Nice!
Shop was well stocked and offered hot drinks and food and, pleasingly, there were hot croissants in the morning. Staff however were pretty miserable and the prices were pretty high.
When we asked if we could please rent some ice blocks we were told that they 'only do exchanges'. As we'd not taken any ice blocks ourselves this meant that we were unable to keep anything cool in our cool box. Perhaps the site could consider a hire for a deposit system!
In summary - Great location, poor facilities, unfriendly staff.

We have just come back from a weekend at Christchuch and were really disappointed.
We were 2 tents and a caravan, all needing electric hookup. We were told that pitches could not be reserved etc so this was a bit tricky as we all arrived at different times. Because of the layout of the EHU pitches, there was no space for the children to play (or people to walk to shower blocks easily). Tents, caravans and cars were hit numerous times by balls and frisbees.
The toilet block was horrid. The showers failed to drain so I was standing in other peoples waste water and then I got wet from other people's showers when I was trying to get dressed.
The child and baby unit could not be found at all and the staff didn't know what we were talking about.
A lovely area and lots to so, but really sorry, but we won't be coming back to this site again.

Upon arrival we were greeted by not only a friendly member of staff but also other friendly campers. The weather was hot, so the mood was always going to be more congenial but pleasing all the same.
We had electric hook-up so could choose a spot anywhere near one of the strategically placed outlets. We found a spot near to both the washing-up basins, shower block and shop which was surprising given how busy the site was.
The shop was well stocked with wine and they even found me an old brick to balance my BBQ on whilst I had a drink ;-) As the evening drew in the campsite quietened and a few campers remained outside drinking and talking but the overall atmosphere was very relaxed.
In the morning we went to the shop to discover freshly baked croissants and bread which was a real surprise and very well received by my 2 daughters, who love croissants for breakfast.
We took a walk down into Symonds Yat on the Saturday and really enjoyed the Forest of Dean and the River Wye.
All in all a very good site and weekend, already planning to go back.

Had a great stay, luckily the weather was great so the cars could stay parked up for the weekend. Kids (5 & 3) really enjoyed the park and forest. Toilets and showers were OK, could do with updating. Shop was good and the staff were very helpful/friendly. As we were meeting up with family at the site it might of been useful to reserve pitches, unfortunately it was first come first served. This wasn't really a problem just an observation, as the electric hook up pitches are numbered its a shame they couldn't be reserved prior to arrival.

We have stayed on this campsite 4 or 5 times over the past few years.
Good Points:
You can pitch anywhere
Staff friendly and helpful
Excellent well laid out shop
Fantastic location, beautiful scenery and walks
Check in has been speeded up which is great
They now have a barrier code rather than key which is fab.
Not so good points:
Stayed at Bracelands last year and I had to complain about the state of the loos, this was no better. There is no excuse for dirty toilets, taps that don't provide water or if they did too hot, plugs that don't fit the sinks.
This campsite is lovely but Forest Holidays really need to sort out the washrooms / loo blocks. Otherwise would highly recommend.

Visited Christchurch late June - friendly service and easy to book in. Lovely weather so very full - good flat pitches for a tent but recommend you arrive early to grab the flat bits if in a tent, as it filled up quickly after mid afternoon. We pitched near the play area so we could relax but still keep an eye on the kids.
Brill walk to Symmonds Yat (2 miles??). Really safe for kids on bikes and best stocked shop I've seen. Showers and toilets fine, rush hour and occasional queue was between 7.30-9am.
Thank you to staff - you were so friendly and helpful - all of you will have a good career in customer services!

The best site we have visited yet.
We arrived in the rain. We have 2 young children and were struggling with the tent as one of the poles had snapped. A site staff came over (in the pouring rain) to ask if we were okay and if we needed any help. We gratefully accepted and they gave us a replacement pole and swapped with our broken one.
- Really friendly and helpful staff
- Great shop (we were very pleased to buy a replacement airbed there as ours had a puncture)
- Pretty site with good access to the Forest of Dean walks and cycle trail
We are definitely going back!

What a fantastic site this is, fairly basic but the facilities were kept very clean and tidy. It had a lovely relaxed feel to it, no wardens peering through your caravan every five minutes, no cut off time at the park, you can chose your own pitch etc.
There is a small park for the children and woodland walks. There is a shop on site which is well stocked but does close fairly early so just check times etc.
Unfortunately you cannot book this site it's on a first come, first served basis my advice would be to telephone first to check availability, we will definitely be returning!

This was our third visit to this campsite. We had an excellent EHU pitch close to the playground - which was perfect for our sons.
There are lots of plus points about this site - good pitches; not too crowded; great for kids; helpful and efficient staff; good shop (which handily stocked airbeds as ours burst! Fab area for sightseeing and activities.
But we were disappointed by the toilet facilities - not cleaned regularly and not enough of them for the volume of campers! Especially poor that two toilet blocks closed off over a busy half term weekend.
Overall enjoyed our stay and would return again in future.
