We have just returned from a 2-night camping trip at this site and had a wonderful time. It was bank holiday weekend and they were able to take us - hooray! The staff were all friendly and knowledgeable. The tent pitches are all generous (and numbered, with your own dedicated car parking spot nearby) so you can't get cheesed off with your neighbours really, even if the tent field was full. The facilities were immaculate and the location is fantastic for walking (Mam Tor, Edale etc) and eating out (we had a meal at the Bulls Head, Castleton and the Poachers Arms, Hope - both about 10 minutes walk, great atmosphere and the best meals we have had for ages. The Bulls Head wins the vote if you only have 1 night - the Creme Brulees were something else!). I don't think you will be disappointed - there was another large campsite down the road that looked as if they just said YES to every camper, really packed and absolutely ridiculous. Have a good time!

I am no longer a 'virgin camper' having just returned from my first camping experience. Losehill was an excellent site for a city girl and novice like me. The amenities on the campsite were in a great state of cleanliness and I was even able to plug in my hair straighteners which, much to the embarrassment of my experienced camping boyfriend, was a 'must have' when choosing the site. The staff were all very friendly and the campsite was only a very short walk away from the six pubs in Castleton. There are some great walks around Castleton which are exerting but not impossible for someone who isn't hugely into walking. A visit to Chatsworth House is worth a trip but try to make time for a walk the other side of the grounds as some terrific views can be had from there. I am unable to comment on the retail facilities in the surrounding area after making a commitment not to shop for one weekend, however the campsite shop was fine for milk. Remember to buy your paper early on a Saturday if it's a broadsheet as they seem to sell out pretty quickly. My only criticism of the site (and one they couldn't help) was the very loud jackdaw that woke me a the crack of dawn all three days and was responsible for my occasional grumpiness!

Great site for leaving car and just walking - hours of good lung stretching
Two points to make though - 1 - the road alongside the site can be busy and fast (especially sundays) 2 - a signposted walk into Hope across the fields (off the road heading into castleton) is not dog friendly (springer, collie and german shepherd) - virtually all the stiles required our dogs to be lifted over or queezed under a low rail -it was as if the stiles were meant to deliberately discourage dog owners from walking across the fields One car journey we did really enjoy though was to the Chatsworth estate - grounds are wonderful, more so if you include the tracks into the woods above the House (did not see the house because of dogs). The water cascade is best viewed from its head downwards rather than looking up.

First visit to this site. Excellent facilities, good sized pitches. Showers/toilets spotless.Visited the refurbished Poachers Arms at Hope (10 mins stroll). Lovely interior, conservatory and outdoor terrace at the rear. Very friendly staff, food excellent as was the service. Altogether a much better experience than the previous nights meal at the Castle in Castleton.

Have just returned from a short relaxing mid week break at this lovely site. As usual it reached the high caravan club site standards - everywhere being very clean and tidy, and the Wardens being very friendly and helpful. You do feel a little 'overlooked' on parts of this site with some pitches backing onto each other, but it does have very good sized hard standings of good quality - a must in wet winter months. Although the site was full for most of our stay it didn't seem to stretch the facilities, and it never felt over crowded. Close enough for an easy walk into Castleton with very good places to eat and drink, The Cheshire Cheese public house serves really good sized home cooked meals and real ale! They also welcome children to eat there and offer child sized portions. We are looking forward to staying here again to enjoy this lovely part of our country.

We stayed at this site for a weekend in January and found it to be of a high standard. Although the wind picked up one night, it was well sheltered at ground level. Plenty of walks and pubs nearby. With two kids it was a real treat to have such a fantastic baby room available to bath them in absolute luxury. Nice warm room, water was not too hot, low toilet for our 3 year old and changing facilities for our 7 month old. A real bonus for us as bathing them effectively in a small caravan shower is not easy. There was no noise on the site, although it was fully booked. We did have people trying to reserve a pitch for friends, unsuccessful as it filled up quickly around 3-6 on Friday. Would return, but we need better weather for the kids.

We had a really enjoyable weekend here. On friday night we could chose from a hardstanding or grass pitch in the sun or shade. The facilites were the best I have seen, showers immaculate, no spiderwebs in the wash blocks, sinks in the washup area free from mess. The village of Castleton was a 20 min stroll up the road (on pavement) where there were pubs and cafes. The scenery was breathtaking, everywhere you look is a view worth photographing.

This is a great site to leave your motorhome or car on site and get under foot power. Castleton is no more than 10 minutes easy pavement walking and the village is loaded with pubs, restaurants, gift shops, places to go, things to do. And the places we visited were very good. If you're a real ale fan, the pubs will take the sparklers off the swan necks if you ask them. The footpaths start a 100 yards or so from the entrance and you can choose your preferred style of walking - on the level, stiff uphill or easy climbs. Many of the walks are circular. All are spectacular. The site is set in a big green pudding basin. I'm told that the walk along the ridges 360 degrees around the site will involve 23 miles. I didn't attempt it. But the walk up Losehill to Mam Tor and down to Castleton cannot be beaten. And that's only about 6 miles (it felt like 10). Bus services are available and trains run from Hope about 3 miles down the road. The site itself is typical Caravan Club - superb. The facilities border on luxurious. The pitches are big. Everything you could need is here - including a drying room for clothes and a family room (pool table/ping pong etc). My only complaint is that we had to leave to get home.

Spent five days at site in early September, excellent clean site, facilities good plenty of showers etc, although wife used disabled shower/toilet and found shower cut out at times, other than that no problems at all. Good base for surrounding areas. Castleton nearby plenty of good pubs etc to get a good meal. Will be visiting again. One word of caution though we used the AA routemaster web page to find the site and this took us all over the place through scenic routes and even told us wrong directions, would advice looking at a map instead.

Stayed here for a couple of nights after visiting Alton Towers (a half hour drive away). Tent field is small but adequate although we did feel a bit isolated as it is fairly cut off from the rest of the site (mainly caravans). Facilities were a 2 minute walk away and we had no complaints - they were always clean and we didn't have to queue once as there are plenty of toilets and showers for everyone (having said that we did go mid-week so maybe it was a quiet time). The quaint Castleton is just a short walk away and there are lots of lovely tea/gift shops (particularly recommend The Cinnamon Bear!) to visit plus of course the local caverns. We did Peak and Speedwell after buying the combined entry ticket and enjoyed them both. All-in-all a great trip (despite the awful weather!) and the views alone make it worth a visit, with Losehill being a good base for your stay.
