 This is our first experience of a Caravan Club Site and we were not disappointed. The location of the site is ideal for walking into either Hope or Castleton where there are various shops and public houses. The site is well maintained and the staff very helpful and informative. Having had 2 recent trips in different areas affected with the poor weather we were apprehensive about travelling, we had no concerns with this site as it is well sheltered from the wind and appeared to have good drainage.

As we only live 25 minutes away we are regular visitors to this site but have not left a review before. I usually take our son for a week while my husband goes to work and returns to us each evening.
As stated in other reviews, the site is ideal for walking with lots of public footpaths nearby and you can actually manage without a vehicle if you have to (excellent for those with motorhomes). The only thing that lets this site down is the dated shower/toilet block. The facilities are kept impeccably clean but the water flow in the showers is so weak that I struggle to rinse shampoo from my long hair. I understand that they are being updated during the early part of 2014 though so this will hopefully be resolved.
Walking up nearby Losehill is a very pleasant afternoon out, especially if you return via Castleton village and its numerous public houses - from memory, I can think of at least 6 in the centre! We usually dine at Ye Old Nags Head at some point during our stay which, although not the cheapest, serves excellent food and ale. There is an American Diner on the main street which seems popular and also several tearooms/cafes. There are lots of gift shops, most of whcih sell jewellery made with Blue John which is mined locally. You can visit several caves, Speedwell Cavern at the bottom of Winnat's Pass takes you through on a boat - not for those who are claustrophobic though as the roof is very low in places.
There is presently no play area on site, just an empty gated area where it used to be but there are nice parks in Castleton and nearby Hope.
Our son loves to walk to Peveril Stores in Castleton where excellent bacon sandwiches can be purchased. They also have an on-site bakery which makes lovely bread and cakes as well as being well-stocked with other provisions (including an off licence).
Peveril Castle (owned by English Heritage) is worth a visit if only for the magnificent views across the Hope Valley. There isn't that much left of it but you can imagine how it was from the informative signs. The walk up to the castle is very steep though so is hard work with a pushchair. Make sure you buy some raspberry curd from the shop - it is heaven in a jar!
Chatsworth House is about 40 minutes drive away and their excellent farm shop sells wonderful locally produced meat and veg - not cheap but the super variety of speciality sausages and burgers makes a very special holiday barbecue treat. The play area in the farmyard will keep youngsters entertained for most of the day if it's good weather and you take a picnic. Kids can have a go at milking, holding guinea pigs and rabbits etc. It costs about £20 for a family ticket including the farmyard and playground - the house and gardens are extra and worth a visit if you have time. On a really sunny day, children can play in the water cascade in the gardens which they will love.
Castleton is one of our favourite sites and we've already booked again for the summer.

To Find Site:-From Chesterfield take A619 towards Bakewell, at roundabout just through Baslow take A624. In about seven miles turn right onto B6049 signed for Castleton. At T junction turn left onto A6187 and site is on right in about 2 miles. Be warned that sat navs may well direct you down some unsuitable roads for caravans or motorhomes. The B6049 is generally fine but care is required as the road narrows in a couple of places.
This campsite, which is open all year, is situated right in the heart of the Peak District within walking distance of Castleton. All 93 pitches are on hardstandings although there are two categories, awning and non-awning pitches. The latter generally being slightly smaller. There are several service points around the site which should put most pitches within reasonable distance. For motorhomes there is a separate drive to service point.
The toilet block complex is quite large and consists of two buildings. The main building houses the toilet/showers with dishwash facilities on the outside. The interior, whilst kept perfectly clean, as you would expect, is a little dated now compared to more modern blocks.
The second building houses a laundry room, drying room, children’s recreation room including table tennis and pool and finally an information room. Other than the recreation room there are no other play facilities for children on this campsite. Reception sells a few essentials and Calor Gas cylinders can be exchanged. WiFi is available on this site and access can be purchased online.
The beauty of this campsite is that it is right in the heart of the Peak District. There are many opportunities for walks, both long and short, direct from the site. If you don’t want to use your vehicle whilst staying here, Castleton is only a short walk away. It has two small general stores where provisions can be purchased although larger supermarkets are about 8/10 miles away and instructions on how to find them are in the site information room. Castleton has a good selection of cafes and pub restaurants (We ate at the Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Inn which was reasonably priced). Buses run from Castleton into Sheffield and all points between. Castleton is famous for its Blue John mines which are now visitor attractions. Next to the large car park in town is a small, but interesting, Visitor Centre with free access. Excursions by car allow many options for visiting this part of the Peak District.

The site is well laid out with good spacing between the hard standing pitches, although we found it dark at night with very little lighting around the site and a little difficult to navigate to and from the facilities area, if arriving at the site after dark be careful as we witnessed a fellow caravanner collide with a post due to not seeing it. Access to the site is very easy and is straight off a main road.
The shower facilities are ageing and in need of an upgrade as the showers are fixed and not powerful also there was nowhere to put clothing/ towels as no benches only a plastic stool and 2 hooks. Staff were friendly.
The local area is outstandingly beautiful and and there are multiple walks available a short distance from near the site. Castleton itself is approx a 10 min walk on a well light road and boasts multiple pubs/cafes (during the day) all of which are dog friendly, the caverns are also within walking distance but quite expensive, the only downfall is there are no local shops unless driving after 6. 00pm.
All in all -excellent site location for Castleton and surrounding area although we felt it was expensive let down by the poor shower facilities

Not the first time at this site but the first review on it.
What to expect – typical CC site located in the Peak District so great location for the outdoor type amongst us. Site has all the usual facilities we've come to expect on the club sites – shower / toilet facilities, laundry, dish wash, family games room, information room, chemical waste disposal, drive-over motor home waste dump, etc. There’s no play area although it looks like there used to be one; reading a planning application pinned up next to the site entrance, the area that once was the play area is ear marked for an extra hard standing pitch. Forget to say, the wardens are very friendly as well.
The facilities are kept clean and in my eyes there’s nothing wrong with them (that’s why we keep coming back) but there are comments in the visitors book that the shower block is outdated. Sorry to whoever wrote that but I'm inclined to disagree. What we didn't realise when we booked was that it was the Xmas light switch on in the village. As a result, even arriving at 1. 30 on a Saturday afternoon, there were only 3 vacant pitches to choose from and there were 2 caravans behind me…! Having said that, the site didn't feel cramped despite being full.
The village is about a 10min walk from site along quite a busy road but there is a footpath so not really a problem. Castleton has quite a few interesting little shops down back streets and plenty of places to eat. There’s a castle (English Heritage) which overlooks the village and there are four caves which are open to the public, one even gives you a ride in a boat. ! There are plenty of places to walk / cycle to starting from the village and the walk to see the old abandoned A625 that had to be closed in the 1970’s is worth some of your time.
Will we be back – definitely yes.

We both thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this very well run and clean camp site. The wardens were extremely helpful and friendly - nothing was too much trouble.
The pitch was good (hard-standing but OK if you use the correct awning pegs!)
The facilities were first class and kept very clean.
The only criticism we had was the constant noise on Monday from the stones and leaves being tidied by a very noisy blowing machine. This completely ruined any chance of quiet relaxation on the site, and the noise went on for a large part of the day. Surely the verges could be swept using a broom? It would be just as quick for the user, not hard work, and would certainly be more pleasant for the campers! Apart from this, the site is situated in a very quiet and beautiful setting.
Castleton and Hope are nearby, and it is particularly easy to walk in to the picturesque village of Castleton. There is a bus stop a few yards from the camp site, and a railway station in Hope. An ideal holiday destination.

Great site in great location. Short walk in to Castelton where lots of places to eat and most dog friendly. Not much further and you are into the hills with lots of walks and caves Despite torrential rain it did not put us off. Big plus for this site - it has a clothes drying room negative - the dog walk is non existent. Facilities very good and friendly staff. We do not have kids but there did not appear to be much for them which meant there were not many which again suited us

We are leaving this lovely site today after a week - would have stayed longer if we had the time.
Large pitches, some more shaded than others - we were lucky to be pitched on one that got sun from early morning till mid afternoon (21).
Spotless toilet facilities and friendly unobtrusive wardens. Families of all ages on site and although I didn't see a playpark the children all seemed to be having a good time (mainly younger children on site).
Small dog walk that met the necessary needs for early and late doggy do's.
The one and only slight criticism of the site was the toilet cleaning time - 10. 30 am till 12 - I felt was a tad early. I like to chill in the morning, have a coffee and a read before starting out and felt somewhat rushed some of the mornings. It wouldn't stop me going back though.
Castleton itself is a lovely village and as a location for the Peak District we felt couldn't be faulted. Nice wee shops, a visitor's centre, and loads of pubs/hotels selling nice food, some dog-friendly. We had a lovely meal in the Old Nags Head and tasted the ales from most of the others.
There are good walks in the immediate area which we loved since we could have some car-free days, and loads of good walking/cycling within a short drive.
There is a lot we didn't manage to fit in so we will return to this lovely area and would definitely return to this site.

Great site with facilities up to the usual Caravan Club standards, showers always clean even though the weather wasn't good. Ideally located for great walks and cycling, plenty of pubs that were dog friendly and within walking distance of the site serving good pub grub. Wardens were friendly and very helpful. Make sure you follow the Caravan Club directions as the other routes can be a little difficult. Will definitely be back.

This was our first visit to this site. We found it a lovely site just off the main road from Hope to Castleton. A little road noise at that end of the site but nothing to write home about.
The facilities were of the normal Caravan Club standard but I did notice in the ladies that all shower heads were at the same height with the exception of the adapted one but none of them were high enough for me to stand under without having to bend and I am only 5ft 10ins!
Pitches were of a good size, some more shaded than others. There was a small dog walk on site but we found that it spooked our dogs for some reason! There was a games room as well as an information room and I think a children's play area. We found the wardens to be very friendly and certainly very helpful. TV has now changed over to digital so the signal was excellent.
Castleton is a lovely village about a 10 - 15 walk from the site. There are plenty of streets and shops to walk around and many caves to visit. Pubs were dog friendly and there were plenty of walks around the area.
Make sure that you follow the Caravan Club directions to get to the site as some of the roads are not suitable for caravans and motorhomes.
