We spent 2 weeks at the beginning of April at the Camping and Caravanning Club Keswick site. We were 2 adults and Max our collie.
Although it is a large and busy site it is right on the edge of Derwentwater with lake access and stupendous views to the lake and in every direction to the surrounding fells. The dog-walk along the shores of Derwentwater gives spectacular views southwards along the lake.
It has a main camping field on the lakeside and a more sheltered one at the rear of the site. It has 2 toilets blocks, with washing machines and tumble driers in one. The toilet blocks were always clean but a little dated and both quite a walk from the far end of the site. As CDP points were in the toilet block this, also, meant carrying the loo tank a long way to empty it. There are a good number of service points with fresh water, waste water and bins scattered around the site.
There is a small children's play area on the main field. Outdoor games, eg swingball, can be hired from Reception. Reception sells a few basic foodstuffs and ice creams. It, also, has an information room and lending library.
The site's wi-fi system can be assessed by either buying a voucher from Reception or 'paying' online. I did not use the site wi-fi as I had a '3' dongle. Mobile phone reception was excellent ('Virgin' and '3'). TV reception was said to be not so good but we used our satellite system and got a very wide range of programmes via 'Freeview'
If you do go to Keswick CCC Site try to get a hardstanding pitch as the campsite can get rather wet and muddy if there is a lot of rain. Ours was very wet when we arrived. The site's lake shore position means that it is prone to flooding. When we arrived the wet weather meant that the site was a the lowest of the 3-tier flood alert system. Our pitch was very muddy at first but then improved in the beautiful sunny weather that we had.
The wardens were always very helpful, despite the site being very busy. They charged our battery on 2 occasions, we were having problems, and, also, put our frozen food in one of the site's freezers whilst our was out of use due to the battery/charger problems.
All of the amenities of Keswick are within 5 minutes easy walk. Keswick is a lovely town with lots of shops, especially for walking equipment, and restaurants. It, also, has several museums, a classic cinema, a theatre and a wave-type swimming pool. All of these indoor amenities can be very useful on rainy days. There are several good fish and chips shops too!
The markets in the main street on Friday and Saturday sell a wide variety of things including local crafts and foods. Booths' supermarket is only about 5 minutes' walk from the site and sells a very wide range of locally produced and specialist foodstuffs but we found it very expensive.
The National Park Information Centre in the central Moot Hall is a mine of information. The only downside of Keswick is that although there are lots of carparks there are, also, lots of cars! We left our car on the campsite for most of our stay and mainly used public transport and our feet! There is, also, good cycling around Keswick including along the old railway line which is now a cycle / foot path.
It is possible to walk across the National Trust's Crow Park, or the adjacent Hope Park, from near the site's main gate to reach the main departure point for the Keswick Launch. We bought a launch day ticket, discounted at the site reception to c8 per adult. This ticket means that one can hop on and off the launch as often as you like including using it to get to the beginning of many beautiful lake and mountain walks. You can, also, walk from one launch stop and return to another.
The site warden explained that the 'trick' of getting the best use of the ticket is not to return to the Keswick Launch Landing Stage until you are finished as they collect your ticket there. We travelled round the lake anti-clockwise to the last but one stop and then got off and caught the another boat going clockwise so we got nearly 2 complete circuits of the lake. The larger launchs are more comfortable but it is fun getting splashed at the front of the smaller ones.
There are a variety of level walks along the Derwentwater shore ranging from the lovely flat, short walk from the Launch landing stage to Friar's Crag and up to a complete circuit of the Lake.
We took a lovely drive along the Borrowdale Valley and over the, very steep, Honister Pass. This passes the Honister Slate Mine with its deep mine tours and 'Via ferrata' climbing route. We then drove past the lovely Buttermere and Crummock Water. We then stopped at the interesting town of Cockermouth on the way back to Keswick. We took the opportunity to get some cheaper food shopping at the Cockermouth Aldi before driving back along the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake on the A66.
There are good bus services from the the town centre, next to Booths, and this includes a regular service by open-topped double decker along the Borrowdale valley to the village of Grange. This again could be used as a good way of getting to and from some excellent walks.
All in all a lovely site in an outstanding position with lots of things to nearby whatever the weather. The route to the site is an easy one. We travelled up the M6 to junction 40 and then drove along the A66 to Keswick. The route around the edge of the town centre is well signed and fine for towing.
The drive to the site is quite long and narrow. Arrivals have to queue at the entrance barrier until they signed-in. This means that the exit lane is used by resident campers both leaving and arriving and so great care is necessary when driving in or out. Arrivals are escorted to their allocated pitch by one of the wardens.

Had to write this review. Just arrived back from 2 great weeks at this brilliant site. What a great setting views from all the pitches are good with lake and fells all round.
The site wardens are great and helpful on our second visit the site we had been on was free but we were second in line to be pitched. The warden called the other one and secured our pitch
During our stay we found the staff very friendly and always checking the toilets and ensuring they were clean. The showers we found very hot as you adjust temp yourself.
The supermarket (Booths) is very good with great local produce with plenty of choice. We didn't eat out as bought and cooked local food including Squirrel which we bought on the local market and roasted on our Cobb cooker. The only set back with this visit is it was too short cant wait to come back.

Just returned from a 4 day break. A friendly welcome was received at this campsite and John the warden showed us to our hard standing with awning pitch. Pitches are of a decent size with ample parking for car as well as awning space. Facilities, maybe a little dated however always spotlessly clean (the women's were anyway) and although it has the added bonus of a free standing baby bath it has no family room which was a bit of a disappointment for us with a 15 month old. Small play area in the middle with swings and a slide can be a little noisy but what are play areas for?
The views from this site are amazing, with the ebb of the Derwentwater one side and the wonderful fells on the other, either way your unit is facing it is a picture post card view. A 5 min walk into the town centre where you can find all your amenities, including the unforgettable and infamous 'Cow pie' at the George inn and Goulash at the Dog and Gun (1/2 potions recommended at both), Please note though, the pubs are not child friendly, with few offering high chairs ( with the exception of the George).
Walks are plentiful and easily started from the site itself highly recommended is the walk to the Nichol End Launch point on the Derwentwater approx. 2.5 mile steady level walk good for first timers, and children - 1.80pp for the boat back (under 5's free). Positives: views, ample pitch size Negatives: no family room.
Cannot wait to return

Visited this site at the end of a cold February, but we still had a great time.
Well located site, a 10 minute walk literally into the town centre. Good market in the town centre, and some really charming shops. Lots of outdoor kit shops, a range to suit all budgets. Town centre eateries are great, as are the handful of lakeland pubs. Cracking pie shop also!
Well worth a trip is the Derwent Launch, but obviously dress up warm! Perfect location for walking the lakes, with bus stop nearby then no messing with cars.
Great dog walk on site, vast area to exercise late at night! Site facilities old, but perfectly serviceable. Showers free and hot, clean and tidy. Wardens so friendly and helpful.
A visit to this site is worthwhile for the views of NW lakeland fells alone. You can also launch kayaks and canoes right from the sites own jetty. One complaint would be the amount of mud, and how much the ground had broken up, causing the car to get stuck when reversing.
Despite this, would visit again, but use the motormover to place caravan.

I have stopped here a few times in the summer and winter. Camping here in the winter can be bit of a pain as they don't have that much space for tents. In the winter its not so much of a problem. The location is amazing.
There are showers, toilets, sinks, no kitchen, not much shelter from the wind if winds pick up. At 8 a night for winter camping for a backpacker its not cheap when you can camp most the lakes free wild camping. But if you need to stay in town and have a shower its got be done.
The people on the site are friendly.
Its right by the town centre and by a lake.

We found this site on the recommendation of a family member and stayed for a week, taking the canoe to 'mess about on the water'. Outfits are a little close together when the site is so busy but that is only a minor gripe.
What a stunning location and gem of a site - despite the weather!
It rained and rained and rained for almost all of the week away. So much so that the site flooded in several places and flooded out our awning. It did not put us off though. The staff are really friendly and we found the location, so close to the town centre, to be ideal for a stroll around Keswick.
Take a trip to the nearby standing stones and go to see the ospreys over Bassenthwaite - in the spring or summer. Fantastic.
We will definitely go again and hope for some drier weather to fully enjoy the lake and have some dry walks in the area.

This is a lovely site in a great location. Its right by Derwent Water edge and Keswick town is 5 minutes walk away.
We were there after it had been raining heavily and the pitches were very soggy! This is obviously an ongoing problem at the site so you have to be prepared to put up with it if you are unlucky enough to get a grass pitch. In itself this was annoying as we went with friends who had booked after us and got a hard standing pitch while we had grass. And we are members - not sure what happened with their booking process there!
Aside from that the staff are very friendly and helpful.
Its quite a big site so the 2 toilet blocks are useful when one is being cleaned.
I'd go back, and it would be nice to overlook the lake, but I'd certainly want hard standing.

Just spent 5 days at the Keswick Site. On arrival found it very nice and were sited by a very helpful assistant warden called Andy who gave us option of a couple of pitches as we were staying on grass and there had been rain previously so the ground was a bit muddy. We got placed in the back field which was very nice and sunny and not too close to the play area. Toilets and Showers were clean and warm, however the floor was quite slippery when wet! The laundry was good 3.50 for a wash and 1.00 for tumble dryer. The camp site is very close to the lake and within walking distance to the town which was very handy. The dog walk was probably the best we have ever had at a camping & caravan club site. Would definitely picking up some of the walks from the Tourist Information Office in Keswick we walked up Walla Crag excellent for a day with magnificent views of the lake and beyond.
Will definitely be planning a trip back to Keswick again but may stay at Derwentwaters next door where its a bit smaller

This site is really well situated, walking distance into the lovely town of Keswick and with a supermarket conveniently close. It is right on the lake and the views can be spectacular.
However it has its issues. We had rain overnight and the site became waterlogged - not such a problem in a caravan but if we were in a tent on our pitch we would have been floating by morning. As it was our awning was pretty much unusable. Even once the pitches were waterlogged they were still being assigned to new arrivals, which suprised me. If we went back to this site we would opt for a hardstanding pitch for that reason.
We didn't think the toilet facilities were as good as those we have experienced at other CCC sites as they are rather dated, although they are kept clean. It is rather inconvenient that they close a toilet block for cleaning at 11.30am - just when campers are leaving (as you have to vacate pitches by midday).
My other criticism of this site is that they keep one lane of the entrance closed at all times. During busy times, this holds the queue for new arrivals which is fair enough, but even when people aren't arriving the gate is kept shut. That means vehicles entering and leaving the site have to use one lane and it is blind when you are leaving the site due to the tight corner. It is an accident waiting to happen and needs to be reviewed.
But with a location that good maybe they don't need to try as hard as other sites.

Usual Camping and Caravan Club set up with helpful staff and clean facilities. There are views of the mountains and/or lake from most of the site. The site shop does milk and a few other essentials including freezer blocks but a good supermarket with cafe is only 5 mins walk away and the town itself is only a little further on with a wide range of shops and pubs (The Bank Tavern serves good pub meals). The Saturday market is worth a look and for a wet day with the kids there is a leisure pool. Any number of outdoor activities are available locally and would recommend the via ferrata at Honister for the more adventurous.
The only downside is that site gets waterlogged very quickly which is a pain if you are in a tent. Wellies are essential whatever the unit if it rains.
