We visited this site for the weekend it is a lovely site with great views. There is a good dog walk area with plenty of poo bins. The site is very close to the town so you have no need for using the car it has plenty of pubs and restaurants to choose from. We found the female wardens very stand offish but the male ones were friendly and helpful. However we dont go away to socialize with the wardens so it was a lovely weekend and we would definately use this site again as it has evey thing we like from a caravan site.

One of the reasons myself and partner chose this site was for it's close proximity to the town of Keswick. We were going with a couple of friends and so thought the sites location would be ideal for socialising etc in the town centre.
I have to say that I agree whole heartedly with the negative reviews of this site! I'm no camping virgin but the design and layout of this site was not at all very well suited for campers. eg, why have all the caravan pitches been positioned close to the shower and toilet blocks when most have their own facilities of that kind. Why position tent pitches away at the other end of the park.
Bearing in mind how tempermental the weather can be in the lakes this proved to be a bit of an obstacle. The shop is basically a small room with basic amenities which is ok but sometimes I dont partically want to walk 15mins into town if its early or the weathers poor etc to fetch some other kind of ammeneties.
The field itself is reasonably well lit at night (not too intrusive but not too dark) but easily floods in poor weather. However the ground is not as rocky as some when it comes to pegs and so on.
The reception staff are friendly and welcoming but the wardens or rangers need some lessons in common coutesy, manners and customer service. They were ignorant and damn right rude. and to think they were wearing coats that quote "always a friendly welcome" or to that end. One elderly driver was blocking the drive entrance to the park because he was trying to manouver his caravan. In so doing he damaged his vehicle by scraping it along one of the sites fences. The fence was fine but one of these wardens was shouting like he ripped the thing out of the ground to take home with him. And i overheard other staff commenting on charging the poor fellow. Over the top? I think so considering the warden was ordering the driver to position his van in such an awkward spot in the first place! I witnessed this trying to leave the park myself!
As to other reviews you do have to queue at the gate to enter the park. which I can imagine is very annoying in peak season.
The shower block etc is ok. Reasonably clean but the showers are to small to manouver around in. Some of the views by the lake are stunning.
So all in all would I use this site again? Yes and no. Yes if I wished to be so close to the town centre (usually I dont mind some walk but we did have friends to consider) but no if it was for anything else.
Quick note..the local wildlife are very tame and friendly. Especially the ducks. We had some following us all over the park and even into our tent. we loved it! until they wouldnt wander off at 4 in the morning nibbling at our tent and quacking loud enough for glass to crack! and we didnt even feed them

This was our first time camping and was a honeymoon break for us! We phoned up last minute and the lady I spoke to was very abrupt with me and made me feel like the beginner I was :( However not to be disheartened, we arrived at the site and were shown to our little pitch. We set up the tent and then had a wander to check out the facilities. The toilets were good as were the showers we didnt have to wait at all to get in. The only fault I would say is there are no power points for hair dryers etc there was one fitted hair dryer for whole site! The shop was adequate and sold the essentials. The lady in the shop was very pleasant and helpful! Overall it is a great site as is very close to town, and the views are great! Dog friendly too!

We found this site the best site we have camped at that suits our needs. The views were marvellous, we met some lovely people, the staff were friendly and accomodating. The shop was well stocked and the toilets and showers were clean and well kept. Our daughter had hours of fun splashing around in the lake. This site is only a few minutes walk from the centre of Keswick which is handy for eating out and having a drink. ( we found The Oddfellows served good food at reasonable prices) We joined the camping and caravan club specially so we could visit this site as it was recomended by friends,We were not disapointed, we will be regular visitors here from now on.

August 2005 I can concur with several of the other reviews on this site. The welcome we received was almost hostile, and it seems that the staff are very unwilling to be helpful, it is almost like the balance of power has shifted from the customer, (whats all that about?). A friend of mine witnessed one of the wardens screaming at a young boy on his push bike riding past the gates, yes this is dangerous but it did not require a reaction like that. However I would definitely visit this site again (sounds crazy huh?) the location is fantastic and worth putting up with the grumpy staff for. Get your tent in the right position and you could wake up to a view of the lake from your tent only a sand wedge away. It is a real shame that the only reason this site is not perfect is the staff attitudes.

June 2005 Lovely clean site and facilities. The showers are first class and the toilets are clean. 5 minute walk to a supermarket, and Keswick town which has everything you could need. A dog friendly site with a good walking area with plenty of poop bins. I had the usual "keep your dog on a lead" speech, which is always expected but had no problems even when he was off the lead swimming. A bit dissapointed with staff though, it took too long to get booked in, and maybe it would have been nice to have been offered a choise of pitch rather "than you will be there." On the whole a lovely place to camp, and will be going back there again in August.

June 2005 Went for half term and although the weather was terrible we had a good time.
The site is a short walk into Keswick with its shops, resturants, takeaways, cimema, pitch and put, crazy golf, rowing boats, swimming pool, crown bowls. If you like walking there are lots of walks from easy to challenging near by. The Cat Bells is great for families as you can catch the launch, get off at the other side of the lake, do the cat bells and get back on the launch at another jetty back to Keswick. The Moot Hall in the centre of Keswick has lots of leaflets for walks and days out.
We also went to Winlatter visitor centre and did a walk there and it was good for kids its only about 15 min drive from the campsite.
The views from the campsite are lovely and theres a good dog walking area. Its a bit of a trek to the showers and toilets if you are on the island bit at the bottom across the bridge but everything else makes up for it.
Its one of my favorite sites and we tend to go once a year because we love Keswick and the site so much.
Somebody has commented about the wardens but we have never had a problem and they have always been great and friendly and the toilets have always been clean. You sometimes get bit of toilet roll on the floor but I found it always the same when campsites use the toilet squares instead of rolls as when there full and you pull some out bits always follow.

June 2005 I had quite excited about camping here after after reading the reviews (the latest one wasn't added at the time). Unfortunately we were a bit disappointed.
Arrival is a pain, you can't enter the site so have to park behind the barrier, or to be exact..behind about 6 cars and the barrier. Went up to reception where we were met with 'I hope you've got a booking', no hello or anything friendly like that. After about half an hour (waiting in line and then it took forever to process us) we were shown to a pitch, we had almost put our tent up when a warden came and told us we'd have to move as we were in the wrong place. Moved on to the next section where we were given a pitch that had been allocated to someone else! Moved again and finally got the tent up, so much for getting there early so we could have a look at the shops, it was 7pm and we hadn't even got the bed sorted out yet! Not at all impressed by their allocation system.
Showers/toilets: Showers (expect to queue in the morning, afternoon is much quieter) seemed to flood the toilet area regularly. Not particularly clean, always loo roll all over the place...a bit more entilation would be good! OH reported that the mens weren't too good, he refused to have a shower in there on the last day. Bear in mind if you are in the feild on the bottom left, you have a LONG trek to the shower/loo blocks.
Noise: It's a quite a big site and there were a number of groups so noise was inevitable, we didn;t expect silence after 11pm but after midnight the groups were still lively and one of them were obvviously really drunk, lots of swearing (of the most unrefined kind) and quite disruptive to the part of the site they were in. There was no sign of any of the wardens and one of their neighbours went and asked them to quieten down, which they eventually did. In fact I didn't see any of the wardens around the site at all (except the men on bikes showing people to pitches).
Shop was ok, when it was open.
Positives:location, 10 mins walk into Keswick, if you want to go to the boat launch, come out of the site and turn right, bottom of lane go through gate along footpath (in a field), much quicker than going all through town.
View. there are a couple of seats by the lake side, view was lovely, you can also launch boats here. There is a good walk for dogs and a nice childrens play area.
Most of the pitches were flat and a good size but there were lots of bald areas which were hard and dry when it was sunny but I imagine can get pretty muddy when it's wet.
All in all, I don't think we'll come back here, shame as the location is great. Completely different experience to their Crowden site.

May 2005 Had heard great things about this site, from friends who visited in 2004. Unfortunately, we didn't have such a positive experience over May bank holiday. Constant congestion around the site entrance due to slow booking in procedure. Wardens unhelpful - when we had a disabled day visitor they tried to suggest she parked miles away from out pitch, despite the fact it was obvious that she could barely walk! Eventually (grudgingly) allowed her to park on our pitch. Facilities not kept clean and poorly maintained - two broken toilet seats in one of the two shower blocks which weren't fixed for a week and remained broken when we left. Very disappointing. Have written to CCC, so hopefully these matters will be addressed!

August 2004 We turned up in the middle of August without a booking and were lucky enough to be accommodated by the extremely pleasant and helpful wardens. Great facilities-I just loved being able to pop our towels into a dryer to fluff them up after use. The surrounding walks are easy and beautiful with stunning views of the lake. The town is very attractive and the theatre on the lake is modern with an excellent programme of plays etc for all tastes. We will definitely be going back but we'll reserve as a site this good will always be in demand.
