We have just spent a wonderfully relaxing weekend at this fantastic site. As mentioned in previous reviews the facilities are excellent and the owners really look after the site and their guests. The views from the site are fantastic, especially the sunset and there are lots of walking opportunities. We walked along the river to Grassington and back (quite a trek but helped by the pub lunch in Grassington!). We definitely will be using this site again.

I have to agree with every review posted here. This is simply the best site that we have been to. We went twice in 2005 and intend to go back a few times in 2006. The showers are excellent. Plenty of them, plenty of hot water, and plenty of space. Good value at 50p. Some people may object to paying for showers, but then who wants to use a dirty shower with no hot water. The site is terraced, with one or two tents on each terrace. If you're lucky (as we were on both visits in 2005) you get a whole terrace to yourself. Each pitch also gets it's own picnic table, which is really handy. We didn't use the site shop much, but they did seem to sell things in small quantities - 1/2 a block of ice cream, 3 frozen sausages. I'm not going to say anything else though as everyone will want to go, and then it'll get too busy for me!

August 2004 Have just got back from Howgill about half an hour ago and wanted to write this straight away.
The site is brilliant, have never met such nice caring people. The showers are really big and really hot and just the thing that you need if the bones are aching from all that lovely walking you can do in the area( If you want to!)
There is a laundry with washer, spin dryer, tumble dryer and even an iron, but I was on holiday so the iron didnt get a look in. The site has some amazing views and although Britain being as it is the weather was not good but it somehow didnt matter as much because the view out of the van was spectacular.
The shop is amazing , full of everything you could need, and when we had to resort to watching the Tv due to the weather Bernard even lent us an aerial. Good dog walking field although I did chuckle to myself whilst picking up my dog's mess and seeing the sheeps mess, very ironic.
Only downfall was the weather and the fact my partner fell over and injured her leg thus resulting in us having to leave three days early. Even then we was refunded two days which we never expected.
Good site 10/10 will be going again!!

July 2004 Excellent little site, we just turned up without a booking for one night hoping they'd have room. They said they could squeeze in one little tent, as it was we had bags of room (about the size 3 tents would take up on any other site). Also had a little picnic table for our exclusive use. Toilets down near us to so not far in the middle of the night.I liked all the recycling in place too.Would definitely return, pity they can't organise the weather as well they do the site.

May 2004 Very clean, very tidy, very quiet. Abundant supply of very hot water (50p/shower). Bernard, the site owner very friendly, helpful and accomodating. Flat pitches with outstanding views. I agree with the previous reviewer when she states its the kind of site you don't really want to share with too many people!

August 2003 This was our first experience as week long campers and what a way to start. The site was perfect for our needs. Quiet, all the facilities were very clean (showers well worth the 50p) and everyone seemed so friendly. Some lovely walks in the locallity, although as dog owners, we were not allowed on some of the nearby fells. However, we found plenty of other walking opportunities and the dogs enjoyed the area set aside for them by the campsite. I would recommend this site to everyone except I think we shouldn't shout it too loud as we dont want it to get over booked for our next visit.

August 2003 I camped for two nights at Howgill last week and I thoroughly recommend it. It was the first time I had camped with my 6 year old son without my husband as he was working. I felt very safe and the campsite was very quiet between 10pm and 8am thankfully. My son met other boys to play with and had a great time. Its about a 10 minute walk down the river for a swim and you can walk along the Dales Way to Appletreewick. The toilets and showers are very clean. The water for washing up is boiling and their recycling facilities excellent. A 4 star campsite to be highly recommended for families and people looking for a peaceful break.

25th - 27th July 2003 Outstanding!
What a lovely place, Bernard & Anne really have made this a nice place to stay and are very helpful. Everything is immaculate, all the facilities are clean and well maintained (The new shower blocks are 50p but if you use the original shower in the gents block that is only 20p! and still very nice to use). The pitches are well manicured with excellent drainage. We had trouble getting a signal to watch our telly so Bernard lent us a tall aerial mast free of charge which I thought was excellent as most places you go to charge for absolutely everything. Out and about you couldn't wish for anything nicer than the countryside in Wharfedale. Miles and miles of footpaths, Rivers and streams, hills and bigger hills (we went up Simons Seat 485 feet which overlooks Howgill and Wharfedale what a climb! & what a view!!) The nicest finishing touch to our weekend was when asked what time we had to be off the site Bernard just smiled and said "there's no rush" Usually you get until 11am or 12pm latest and often if you want to stay later you have to pay extra. We was really made to feel welcome and didn't want to leave when the time came - we will definitely be going back to Howgill Lodge again!!!

May 2003 Brilliant! This site is exceptionally clean and tidy with very good facilities, I think the tardis style shop sells just about everything except a nice bottle of red.
The only critiscm I could make was the lack of play areas for the kids, although there is a 'football field' with goalposts, it is on a slope and not really ideal for a game of footy.
However my kids were fascinated by the collection of birds (hens, geese, turkeys etc) just over the wall from us, and as there were loads of other kids around they were busy the whole time. I would have preferred they had somewhere to play rather than around the tents. But I would recommend this site to anyone.

June 2002 A very attractive and well kept campsite with superb views. Toilets are located at different levels so not too far to walk during the night. The only downsides were the fact that we were charged for an infant, which I don't find very fair and also the 50p charge for the showers it too steep.
