This site has an atmosphere and essence all of its own; its like going back to simpler times, but still having decent facilities.

First things first; the setting has to be one of the best on the circuit. Its a smallish site, set on the side of a valley, down a narrow country track and 'away from it all' as it is possibly to be in this country without getting hopelessly lost in the Highlands!

It's also the little individualistic touches that make Howgill so special - each (spacious) pitch has its own picnic table, for example. There are five or so toilet blocks dotted about, but no two are the same! There are a pair of seats and table at the site entrance for walkers / campers to relax on and watch the world go by. There is even a tiny book and video library!

Howgill also does its best to work with nature - the chemical disposal is designed to be green, there are notices informing the camper of which bird varieties to expect in which month, some of the terrace banks are left uncut to encourage wildlife etc.

Although the site is on a hefty slope - the careful terracing works a treat, a little like being at the cinema, you can always see the view over the folk in front! And what a view - hightop hills with barns, dry stone walls and dotted with sheep.

Howgill hits all the senses in fact, the air is rich with birdsong - we heard cuckoos, a myriad of common songbirds, plus pheasant screeches, a cockerel and best of all, a tawny owl at night.

Back to the site itself - the pitches are very spacious, reasonably level, the toilet/shower areas are clean and functional in a charming olde-worlde kind of way and the owners are friendly. The small shop meanwhile is well stocked, a good thing as the nearest provisions are more than a good walk away. The shop also takes switch, which is handy when the cash runs out!

Any quibbles; well if you really want me to be picky, there isn't much for children who don't want to walk, but then you wouldn't bring them to this sort of site anyway. Some of the extra charges (eg - £5 for another car) are maybe a bit steep, as are the site fees of £23 for a family in a tent in May.

Overall though, have to say that this is a very special site and we will certainly be back.

We have stayed at Howgill for many, many years now - both with children & dogs (in tents) & now as part of the 'older generation' with 1 dog in a campervan. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful 'escape' - though weekends can be busy. The facilities are kept immaculately clean and improved regularly. There are plenty of on site & local places of interest to please the kids. Dogs can't walk on the Grouse Moors true, but a short walk down from the site brings you to a lovely, accessible river with stepping stones and a riverside walk.

I cannot praise Tony, Fiona & the boys highly enough (and Bernard & Ann before them). You get a warm welcome, whatever the weather, and clean fresh facilities every single time you visit. I have stayed there when there has been snow on the ground and in blazing sunshine and always it is clean and tidy.

The shop is tiny but very well stocked with essentials and Fiona will always go the extra mile to help out with customers special requests (eg urgently needed Rennies!).

It is not excessively expensive (as some seem to think)we have camped all over the UK and keep on coming back (sometimes 3 or 4 visits a year - even from Kent) - you have to go a long way to better this site - long may it continue !

Visited this wonderful campsite for a long weekend last week, the first time I had returned since I was a child. My husband and daughter (3 1/2) are first time campers so knew this would be a good place to 'break them in' as it is not too far away from home. I haven't camped for about 20 years so we were all a little 'green'.

The site does not disappoint.

The views alone are worth paying for.

All pitches are easily accessible and as the site is terraced it has a feeling of privacy even though you know you are not the only ones there.

You do need to book early if you want electric hook up for a tent as these are limited.

There is however a fridge and freezer available to store your food and ice packs in should you need to use it, all the owner asks for is a small donation to charity which we thought was perfectly acceptable.

You do need to supervise young children as some of the drops from the terraces are a little steep but once my daughter was made aware of them she was careful enough.

The lovely thing about this site is that conservation of the beautiful area is really important.

Some of the bankings have been deliberately left uncut so as to encourage wildlife and wild flowers and we regularly had pheasants and rabbits walking past our front door!

The shower blocks and toilets are plenty with hot running showers (very welcome when the overnight temperature sank below freezing - not what you expect in the middle of May). They were kept very clean and tidy.

The washing up areas were large with plenty of hot water.

Guests are asked to recycle as much waste as possible which I think is a wonderful idea and there are lots of bins and drinking water outlets on site.

The little shop on site sold basics and the staff are very friendly and helpful.

You are shown to your pitch by the owner on his ride on mower and you can choose which direction to pitch. Each pitch has it's own picnic table and benches which I thought was a lovely addition.

There is a small football pitch for children to play ball games but no playground as such.

Our daughter found the countryside one big playground and we certainly didn't miss this.

Shops, pubs etc are a little way away but that is what we personally prefer.

All in all a wonderful restful few days and we have booked to return again later in the summer. Perfect!

We tried this site in October - always a testing time for tents!

The site is very well kept, and the terraces that form the camping pitches are level, well drained, and have some tree shelter to reduce the effects of wind. However as in most cases where there has been gravel put under the turf to increase drainage, you may need a mallet if you want to get your pegs all the way in the ground!

As mentioned elsewhere, the welcome is friendly and warm. It made us feel like we were welcome and that if we needed help or advice it would be freely given.

The site was quiet, and we were given a terrace to ourselves down near the bottom of the main field opposite the chickens and turkey. This was close to the bins, water taps and the lower loo/shower block. Nothing was too close but was not too far away either which was excellent!

I'd be interested to know how much space you'd get on a busy summer weekend, ie how many tents would be squeezed into that area, but we saw that there was a massive overflow field next door; so we'll try it in summer and see.

The loos and showers were more than adequate - plenty of loo roll, only one spider per cubicle, all good basic camping stuff. The showers were notable in that not only was there more than enough room to get changed, there was a nice big shelf for dry clothes, and a proper chair to sit on while getting dressed. The water was hot and plentiful, so the lack of heating was never an issue. We never felt the need to explore the pay showers, but even then 50p doesn't seem too much to ask. You can always share if you're short of cash!

The site does suffer a little from noise - but only from the wildlife and animals. The dayshift of chickens duck and the turkey handed over to a happy family of tawny owls. There are also grouse and pheasants joining in; one hen pheasant stalked our tent - I guess she knows where the food is!

The only query I do have is that £16 for a car, tent and two adults seems a tad expensive compared to a backpacker's deal at £6. A caravan pitch at Howgill with an electric hookup costs £16 so not sure this is quite fair?

Anyway, we want to go again, as it's a great site and we enjoyed our stay. Many thanks!

This was our very first holiday in our newly bought caravan and although the journey up and down hills and very narrow lanes were a bit hair raising at times it was an excellent experience, we really enjoyed it! The site was really clean and well looked after, the toilets were immaculately clean at all times of the day and night. Showers are now 50p, but well worth it as hot water available constantly. Owners were very friendly and even gave me a quick lesson on how to reverse efficiently! All in all we had a really good time!

Just got back from a weekend at Howgill, we had a fab time, weather could have been better but who can expect to get nice weather in the Uk ?? The site is lovely, staff very helpful, we were escorted to our pitch, which was nearly en-suite, showers and toilets a stones throw away, very good facilities, very clean and well kept up to with things like soap and loo roll. We didn't discover the walk to 2 pubs in appletreewick until we were coming home, but porably should have asked and we would`ve found that out ! Will defo be returning some time soon, Definite thumbs up !

 Overall a wonderful site!

The location of the site is perfect for accessing the southern Dales area. Grassington, Skipton, Malham and Pateley Bridge are all within easy reach. The views across the valley from the site are also amazing due to the pitches being tiered down the hillside.

We requested a pitch in a quieter area as there are just the 2 of us. We were allocated exactly that, tucked away in the bottom corner of the site just by the hens and turkey (which weren't as noisy as you may imagine) with effectively our own front lawn. The water tap and toilet block were on the doorstep but not close enough to feel like your being encroached upon by other campers.

The toilets and showers we used were free and were always kept in a spotless condition. Although not as posh as the ones at the top of the site they were perfectly adequate and the showers if anything were more spacious and practical, with a dressing area, chair and worktop.

We ended up bending a few of our tent pegs whilst setting up, however the tiny but well stocked shop came up trumps with some replacements.

Other facilities on the site which we used included the laundry, the library, the freezer for our ice packs and the weather report which was updated daily but was also inaccurate whilst we were there due to very changeable weather.

We only visited one of the pubs in Appletreewick, the New Inn, and it was lovely, can't fault the food or beer in there.

As there is so much to do around the area this site would be our first choice for our next visit.

Lots have been said in favour of this site. It is a great place to stay, the views need seeing to be believed.

Everything was so clean with the wardens ever observant for anything that may need doing.

The shower and toilet blocks were spotless during the time we stayed'

Every one was informal and polite, if anything was needed help or advice was on hand

The only downside for me were the narrow roads and lanes on the approach however there were coaches travelling the same roads so maybe it was just me being a bit picky,

Tents have their own area at the bottom of the site whilst caravans are on tiers with about four in line when the site is full.

The standings are gravel so take good pegs for the awning

A long slow drive via the back roads to the market town of Settle make you understand why the Yorkshire Dales attract people from all over the world.

There is a small shop on site for basics and Skipton is just about 9 miles away if anything from a supermarket was needed,

I had problems with setting up my satellite dish and failed completely but I prefer to sit outside and natter or read a book, the tv is for dark damp nights.

Some of the other people on site managed to set up their dishes but we were in a very sheltered spot with a high stone wall near us,

All in all both my wife and I were sorry when we had to come home and will certainly be returning again, I can recommend it highly

Lovely campsite set in the valley with views on all pitches.

The showers are now 20p, toilets have been renovated and the ones on side of the house are heated, the ones on the lower part aren’t.

All pitches are hard standing gravel.

We did get a noisy camper van on the Friday night but they were moved the following day onto the lower part of the site.

Make sure you take your walking boot there are some fantastic walks. We had lots of rain but managed three walks. They range from easy to hard! but the weather can change very quick so be prepared . The lane on the approach is very narrow. You need to arrive after 1pm and leave before 12pm. They ask this so you don’t meet another caravan on the track? It was nice to see how the other people live in the country.

Also this site has a lot of dog owners using it so if you like dogs this site is for you there is also a dog walk, football field, with goals. The wildlife is great, loads of birds and ducks, wood peckers, Kingfishers, larks, finches, etc.

We went to stay at this site at the beginning of May. As many of the reviews have already said it is a lovely campsite with terraced pitches. Nice clean hot showers and very friendly owners. The only downside (and nothing to do with the site at all) was that it was absolutely freezing at night!

Bolton Abbey is nearby and the spring flowers were just gorgeous. Despite being a little chilly it was lovely to wake up to the sound of the sheep baaing. But less lovely to wake up to the pheasant that was sitting on the wall next to our tent!

We had a fab two nights here and I hope to return again when the weather is a little warmer.
