Booking at this site was easy and can be done online or on the phone and the email confirmation came through quickly with details for arrival, etc.
The site is open to non-members too for a small extra charge.
We arrived at the gate and were met by the two friendly wardens who gave checked us, explained the site facilities, / layout and gave us an information leaflet with the barrier code. He then walked ahead of us and showed us where our pitch was.
The grass pitches were not open due to the time of year, but they were all very flat and there is so much space. We were able to walk the whole site, just no vehicles on the grass at present.
Half the site is wooded and the rest open space, this gave a really nice natural feel to the site and there is loads of room, including a wooded dog walk area and a small lake.
There are a few toilet blocks, however as our visit was early February only one was open, which was not a problem for us. The toilet and showers were all very clean, well maintained and well stocked. The showers are push button type, you cannot adjust the temperature or direction, but they were fine. There is also a laundry and washing up area on site. A motorhome drive over waste point too.
The playground for the children looked awesome, but we didn't have any with us, so did not venture onto it but it would be great fun for children of all ages.
The site offers hundreds of pitches mixed between grass without electric, grass with electric and hardstanding. All were flat, well spaced and very well maintained and a good ampage for the electric which kept the batteries charged and the fridge running well all night.
Campfires are not allowed, but off the ground BBQ's are. There is a strict no noise policy after 11pm and this was adhered to and the site was very peaceful throughout the evening and night.
Hertford is close by, and is walkable, however a quick taxi ride will get you there in 5 minutes. Hertford is lovely, it has plenty of the main big shops and also the smaller independents, with a castle to venture to and explore and lots of pubs and eateries too.
Ware is close by, as is Hatfield, St Albans, Stevenage, Welwyn Garden City and Knebworth. London is easily reached from Hertford Train Station. Essendon and Epping are not too far too if you like forest walks.
There is loads walking from the site, but you have to leave the main entrance and walk the quiet road for a bit before hitting the footpaths.
The site is close to plenty of places to visit and also easy to get to being close to the A10, M25, A1M etc.
This is a slice of heaven that is very peaceful, relaxed and perfect for my needs. I will return time and time again with very friendly and helpful wardens.

Stayed here for 3 nights visiting family in Stevenage.
Easy walk into Hertford where there are lots and pubs and eateries in the town. A 30m walk to the train station gives easy access to London.
Great welcome from wardens when we arrived and had a choice of pitches to pick.
Surprisingly for the last weekend in July, the site was only about 40% full, so not too much noise and most people were well behaved.
Have been here a number of times due to to its proximity to family, however, the toilet facilities do let the site down a bit. They were always clean and tidy, but just need bringing up to date and refreshing.
And it would be good if there were rubbish facilities at a couple of locations around this huge site, rather than taking everything to the bins at the main gate.
Wifi and TV reception was good.

We used this as a transit site at which it was very successful.
We chose "grass only no electric" so we were at the far end of this enormous site which felt almost rural with only one other unit in sight.
The only downsides were the inevitable continuous hum of London traffic and the airliners which started as soon as Heathrow opened its' gates (at about 5. 00am).
We would use it again when in transit, but not at weekends/ school holidays when I understand it gets crowded.

He then cycled ahead of us and showed us where to pitch.
The initial pitch was quite shady, and a quick walk back to reception and a request to move and this was met with a helpful and friendly response and we got to choose our own spot in the rally field. The fields are all very flat and there is so much space. Half the site is wooded and the rest open space, this gave a really nice natural feel to the site and us and the dog loved the space, the wooded dog walk area and the site in general.
There are a few toilet blocks, however as our visit was late September only one was open, which was not a problem for us. I did use the toilet but not the showers and it was all very clean, well maintained, well stocked and Covid advice place prominently.
There are plenty of fresh water points, bins, dog bins, motorhome waste point and a lovely playground for the youngsters, however this was closed due to Covid.

Chose Hertford as our first Covid era break. Check in was efficient, staff waiting near reception who checked our booking and guided us to our spot, which we were able to choose as we'd been there before and didn't need EHU.
The site is in a lovely position about a 10-15 minute walk from the town centre. It's very spacious with plenty of room, the staff were very friendly and helpful. The facilities had a few of the showers, toilets and washbasins closed off, but didn't feel that busy compared to previous visits, I don't know if people were using their own facilities in their vans.
Noise wise, it was quiet apart from some music in the distance overnight on Saturday night (very late, from 0100-0500). We may have heard it once on a previous visit, so I don't know if there is some sort of outdoor nightlife somewhere in the vicinity on Saturday nights. It didn't keep us awake though.
There's plenty of pubs and places to eat in Hertford, and Ware (a walk/ride along the valley, or one stop by train) is also nice. We can particularly recommend the open air pool there, which would probably need to be booked in advance.

Nice peaceful campsite, with some great country walks on the doorstep.
Close proximity to Hertford town centre, but with out the noise.
Facilities partially restricted, due to cover situation, which is understandable.

So, with our last trip away being in Feb 2020, it was great to head out and arrive at Hertford. First time here, but met up with family who lived close by.
Check in was excellent, and we were shown a choice of pitches, we chose a hardstanding and flat pitch, without being under trees. Toilet blocks was clean, which we used a couple of times with a one way system in place.
Only point to mention is the wifi, whilst its free, on our pitch the reception was poor.
Would recommend site

This was the first week any campsite was open after the Covid19 lockdown, so interesting to see how this worked:
No reception, but we were met on arrival - friendly and informative staff - and guided to the area for small tents. This is close, but not too close to the first toilet block. The nearest other people must have been 30m away in vans.
The obvious changes were in that loo block: No laundry and no family room. In the loos every other cublical was locked out of use so only 2 of three showers, only 2 of three toilets. Entry was via the central lobby and exit by the end door. Lots of arrows on the floor to create a one way flow if needed.
The whole block shut for clearning from 09:00-10:30 and again in the afternoon. We got caught out by the 09:00 closure during which you have to hike to the other block where only the family room (which is a single loo plus baby changing spaces) was open. To judge by the chlorine smell in the loo block post cleaning there was some heavy disinfectant being used each time, which is good.
Most of the people on site were in caravans or motorhomes. I counted only 2 other tents. So I assume most people were using their own facilities, not the site loos. We were told the second block would be open for the next weekend as more people were booked.
In Hertford most cafes were doing takeaway. Fish and chips not a problem to get. It's a 5 min bike ride down hill. Use the footpath and back roads via the church to avoid the A414 inner ring road. (From the town centre you then have National Cycle Route 61 which runs west to easy with easy cycling off road. )
If you have a young family, the on site playground is closed, but the big town playground at Hartham Moor is open. I've reflected that in the score for child friendliness. If you have young children you will need to take them off site for things to do unless they want to cycle around the site roads.
We did a number of bike rides into the Lea Valley and a highlight was the cafe at the Old Mill, Broxbourne. Takeaway only, but next door is a picnic area and a spur off the canal, plus trains to spot. The all day breakfast bap or panini is highly recommended.
If you are cycling and heading for the Lea Valley, a useful tip is to head south along the road from the camp site and use one of two bridleways across Highfield Wood to get through to the road north of the Paradise Wildlife Park zoo. Both routes are fine for most bikes but not surfaced so not for slick tyres. Pushing up the hills is needed briefly on both routes unless you have super grippy tyres. If you then take the road to Nazeing Marsh you get to the cycle routes in the Lea Valley Park with the mimimum crossing through urban areas.
We did one ride using this route and then looping back along national routes 1 snd 61 to Hertford via Rye House (which is worth going to look at), plus another southwards to Waltham Abbey. Lots of water and ducks. You can cycle off road all the way to the Olympic Park in London if you are keen. Just allow time for narrow towpaths and people.
Finally, if you get south of the site to Monks Green go and read about the sad WWII tale of the doodlebug tragedy. There's an information board just south of the entrance to the Monks Green industrial park.
The site is quiet as you would expect. There is some noise from planes flying into Stansted and sadly some local traffic noise from the A414 as late at night the speed freaks are making use of the empty roads. But this at enough of a distance to be irritating rather than a real nuisance.

This was my first time here, having driven past it for years. It was a big site on the outside of Hertford but walkable to town 10-15 mins.
A selection of shops Big and small and a Brewery as well as spoons. Bus links as you would expect and food outlets. Easy to find but a busy area I did not here traffic as others and the odd Plane now and again.
Well worth another visit on my way either north or south. Nice staff and welcoming people
