We chose this site for our 10 day holiday going off the reviews on here but we were a bit disappointed : on arrival you are told just to find a space and pitch but this leads to other problems like the next person pitching arms length away. The toilets are really nice but there are only 3 unisex showers for the whole site
The site is in a great position for shops/takeaways and tourist attractions and the fishing is very popular.
We were disappointed in the attitude regarding the campers and tourers, as we had on 2 occasions to request advice, one being that the person in the next tent had gone to the pub and left his terrier alone which escaped into our awning but the owner was out and his words 'what do you want me to do' then the phone went dead. The second occasion was when our car and 4 others were broken into and fishing gear stolen, again we tried reporting to the owner but we are still waiting for a response from him

We stayed at this site over the May Bank Holiday. We are a family of four with two children age 8 and 5 years.
The field in which we were pitched was good with just the right amount of other visitors which included a mixture of tents, caravans and motorhomes.
It is unfortunate that there are no play areas for the children although they still managed to make a few friends and played football and cricket in the grass area in the middle of the field. Also, the ducks and hens wandering around had the children entertained! Go-Karts were a plus although only operate on certain days/times.
Also, just over the road is Elvaston Castle and Country Park where we had a lovely day out!
We were disappointed with the shower/toilet blocks which was one of the positives for booking this site (as per previous reviews). Yes the facilities were in a newish block and, if cleaned m ore frequently have the potential to be excellent.
Cafe was ok although not much choice on the menu.
Staff were pleasant enough and very relaxed.

Location is great and the staff are friendly. Elvaston Castle Country Park, opposite, is nice to walk around. The castle itself is not open to the public. The site is close to many cycle routes that are very easy to follow. Contact Sanstrans to get maps of the cycle paths in the area. Great fishing lakes and tackle shop, not that any of us are in to fishing. Children had great fun on the Go-Karts.
Sadly the site itself was like a building site while we were there as more cabins were being put in. This was exasperated by the wet weather which made it incredibly muddy. A repeatedly flooded chemical toilet didn't help the cause but a lot of sympathy for the owners on this point though as somebody kept throwing cans and plastic bags down it. Then someone dropped a part of their toilet down it and didn't tell the management. Cannot fault the time and energy that went in to repeatedly sorting the problem out.
Toilet block furthest from the entrance is new. Tap broken on one of the three sinks in the men's toilet on our arrival and still broken a week later on our departure. Arrived on the Saturday and the toilets weren't cleaned until the Thursday as the staff didn't see the point as everywhere was so muddy.
There are a lot of permanent residents on the site which doesn't work. Being woken at 6. 30am every day to the sound of a motorbike being revved up and then being followed by a steady stream of cars leaving over the next hour is not fun. Decision needs to be made as to what direction the campsite wants to go in as the two don't mix.
Probably won't return and will look for another site in area when visiting friends.

Me, my husband and 2 year old son stayed at this site and all I can say is wow! The staff are so friendly and very helpful and the prices are really low too!
Perfect for if you are a lover of fishing as there are a lot of lakes. It is also a perfect site for spotting wildlife-ducks come to your door and you can see rabbits playing around the site.
There is a cafe on site although we never used it.
The toilets were amazing-you walk in and the mirrors have lights round them and they were always clean. The showers were also clean-the only downside being there were only 3 showers between men and women so in peak season I could see it being a problem. The water does warm up quickly though which is a bonus. There are pot washing sinks in the room next to the toilet and shower block so plenty of space to do the washing.
10 minutes walk away is Elvaston Castle and 10 minutes drive is the area of Borrowash with shops etc. The site itself is isolated making it peaceful and perfect to just relax. You can also see the stars and planets easier too due to less light pollution.
I personally do not think it would be good for children unless loads of things are brought to entertain them due to their being no park on site but my son had a fab time chasing the ducks and feeding them!
I highly recommend the site and the owners-we will definitely stay there again this year :)

Came here primarily as wanted to do get away for a few days and do some fishing & camping.
I wasn`t disappointed either.
It has 6 lakes although a few of these have only recently been dug out so `feel` a little bare. Be better in a few years. The weather was so hot I only fished for approx 2 hours on the second day I was there. Caught 6 roach on the float. Tackle shop on site is well stocked (with gear & bait) but you do have to catch the chaps running it which was quite tricky !
The shop on site is a big log cabin as you come in and sells quite a lot of stuff. It does a fantastic breakfast for about a fiver. Well cooked and excellent value for money. I ate mine outside on the benches.
The toilet block, although a few minutes walk from the camping area, is superb. Very modern and exceptionally clean. The showers are like the ones you have at home so you can set the temperature as you want. Each cubicle has a chair for you to put your clothes on and they are pretty long.
The pot washing sinks around the back are clean and functional.
Some have mentioned shabby caravans but they are in a storage area by the go kart track so didn`t detract from the site.
The Harrington Arms is a traditional pub (in Thulston) approx 15 mins walk away and Shardlow is a further 20 minute walk away. Shardlow is a lovely town and has some great pubs including 2 on the canal.
Its a quiet site and not really suited to kids or families but if you want a few days away fishing or enjoying the countryside then this is ideal.
A nice quiet site

Great site. Go once a year for the steam rally weekend which is on a Elvaston Castle, over the road. Although we don't always make it to the rally.
Toilets are just about the best you will ever see on a campsite. They even have underfloor heating which is lovely if you're feet are a bit chilly. If they ever are a bit dirty just think about all the kids running in and out. You would need someone sat in there constantly to keep them clean.
Downsides:
The ground is so hard! Went through so many pegs, of all types, hardly got anything in. Old gravel pit so every inch of ground has something hard to hit.
The one thing this site is missing is a park for the kids, but they do have room to run around.
Upsides:
Great loos.
Derby (No1 place for real ale in the country) short drive/taxi ride away.
Elvaston Castle great for all family.

Our second visit, which coincided with the annual 'Braii' where a bunch of South African expats BBQ and drink properly over an extended weekend.
The place was rammed busy but a great atmosphere, they seem to have employed a full time cleaner and warden or something now because despite the 1500 people partying that weekend the loos remained clean and the rubbish cleared very quickly.
A new cafe and shop has opened by the front gate and fishing lakes, there's good hot basic food at a reasonable price and a friendly service.
A pleasure once again, can recommend.

We visited beechwood over the bank holiday, the site was full as you would expect at bank holiday, we were able to chose where we pitched up and had enough space for a caravan, awning and a large tent and gazebo, which was no extra charge.
The toilet blocks are luxurious and the new block has lighted vanity mirrors, with a hair drier. And is very lush. The showers are wet room type and are hot and also no extra charge, some separate toilets have sinks for privacy.
The site is level and well drained. The fishing was excellent and everyone had a good days catch.
Also there is a good bait and tackle shop on site.
The local area is very pretty and the marina at shardlow which is only 5 mins away does excellent food, there is also a local pub nearby that serves food. The owners are very friendly and will go the extra mile to make sure that your stay is enjoyable, we had a great time. Also the boys enjoyed the go karts at £2.50 for 5mins, not too bad.

Had a 3 night stay here and would recommend it to everyone,
the atmosphere is relaxed and laid back so much so that we decided to pitch in one spot then changed our minds after the owner had gone and it wasn't a problem.
The facilities were very good with modern shower block and pot washing facilities, with large shower room for the disabled or family (only minor gripe is there aren't many so can get busy at peak times),
The fishing lakes were well maintained and very busy and although we never fished was, I thought, quite reasonably priced.
There is a shop on site selling essentials and about a mile down the road is Burrowash with a large co-op and shops and well worth a visit is the wilmot arms pub, went twice and very good food, service and prices with play area outside and tv in covered smoking area.
Virtually opposite the site is elvaston castle which is nice for a walk. The weather was very wet and windy but good time had by all especially by 8year old son who loved the on site go karts (nearly as much as me ).
We will be going back asap this time armed with rods and waterproofs

We stayed for 3 nights at this site in April as we were visiting family in Derby. We had hoped to stay at the club site along the road, but it was full. It was a blessing really, as we were in a large open field with loads of space for the kids to play cricket, and we liked not being shaded by trees.
Our first night was lovely and quiet and I was able to nip up the road to the Coop at Borrowash to get some supplies. The second night was spoilt by a group of young men arriving in tents and playing loud dance music till late. I did go and ask them to keep it down, as did other people, and the music and revving engines stopped, but they were making a lot of noise till 1 am. However, they packed up first thing the next day and were gone before 9am, and I later heard from another camper they were told the night before to be off the site first thing - so harmony was restored and we had a lovely quiet evening for our 3rd night.
The toilet/shower block were good, and recently modernised. I did feel there could have been more regular cleaning, and often there were cubicles with no toilet roll - but it was luxurious for us after the previous site we had come from! We will definitely return to this site as overall it was a positive experience, and lovely location.
Try the 'Delicious' take away next to coop, was really good value and very tasty. There looked to be a lovely Indian in Borrowash that allowed you to bring your own alcohol. We didn't try it on this occasion, but it was very busy and I would like to in the future.
