A wonderful site to visit for both novice and experienced campers. Set in rural derbyshire but close to towns for supplies, this site provides the perfect setting for an overnight stop, a weekend break or a longer holiday.
The owners are very friendly, the on site shop although small provides basic essentials and ice block freezing, which as it happens was a must on the weekend we visited.
The newly opened shower block is extremely clean and modern, providing roomy showers including a large shower room with sink and toilet for families with children, piped music and a hair drier for the ladies (which was installed the weekend we arrived). The block will also house a washing up area and laundry facility which wasn't open when we arrived, but those facilities are also available behind the shop.
The site area for tents and caravans has electric points and night lighting so no stumbling required getting to and from the toilets at night!
There are no playground facilities on site, but there is plenty of room for the children to indulge in ball games, frisbee.
We visited Elvaston Castle literally a five minute walk from the site and what a lovely place to go. Woodland walks around the lakes, vast areas of grassland to picnic, a playground for children and of course the ever important ice cream van!
Personally, this site went beyond my expectations and my partner and daughter (who were totally new to camping) thoroughly enjoyed their stay as did i!
The site was clean and tidy and I would recommend it to everyone to try.
If you don't go. You will never know!

Visited beechwood last week, not impressed with the site.
Not very helpful staff, reception always closed. Site looked untidy and messy, long walk to empty the waste water and elsan.
Choose this site because of the go karts for our son.Beware not open during the week, asked at reception when we did find it open about the go karts, told they were only open on sat&sun. But when we were leaving on the friday a go kart was being driven around the site saying they were open.
Maybe time of the year but invaded by beetles, haven't seen this at other sites
One plus point was the new shower block, made the rest of the site look untidy

This is a lovely campsite; the staff are friendly (one kind lady lent us her hammer!), the setting is beautiful and there are things to do nearby (castle and pub a short walk away, Asda a 10 min drive and Derby city centre and shopping centre 15-20min drive).
As soon as we arrived we were made to feel welcome with friendly staff at the entrance to greet us. The new toilet block is immaculate- the nicest I've ever seen on a campsite.
If visiting this site, remember to take a mallet or hammer as the ground is very hard.
One thing that could be done to improve would be to have hairdryers or a couple of plug sockets in the shower block to plug hairdryers in to.
We will definitely be returning and would certainly recommend this campsite.

This is a lovely campsite if you just want to relax and do nothing.
We arrived at this campsite and was told where to go. Take tough tent pegs because the ground is rocky and uneven.
There is a castle which is 2 min walk way which was great for a day out. And the local pub is about 20 min walk away, with a beer garden.
Only problem was that the shop was hardly open and first thing in the morning when they did open they didn't have any bread.
The new shower block at the top of the site is wonderful, best I have ever been in, unfortunately there is no hair dryers or electric plugs for your hairdryer.

Friendly staff who showed us to our pitch when we arrived.
Take some tough tent pegs, ground very hard, but this was bonus when it rained as the grass drained very quickly and didn't turn into a bog!
Toilet block fantastic, best I have ever seen. However, there are only three showers in this new block and so they were a little busy at times. Well worth the wait though!
Shop was not great and often closed, even over bank holiday weekend so best not to rely on it.
No problems with electric hook up and pitch really level.
No play area but boys were happy playing football and badminton outside tent.
Elvaston castle grounds are close by and nice for a walk. Thulston village pub, which you can walk to in matter of minutes, Harrinton Arms, was great. Friendly staff and wonderful food at reasonable prices.

Nice peaceful site on grass pitches, pitched near the state of the art new toilet block, plenty of ehu points even in the large field but with the amount of rain glad I didn't use this as it was looking rather muddy.
With the fishing lakes on site ideal for fishermen. The pub 15 min. Walk down the road is in the GBG (Harrington Arms) and is a nice friendly local with a few decent real ales and nice looking restaurant.
The half hourly bus servive to Derby can be caught at the end of the road after the pub(20 min walk from campsite) and runs through the night for those wishing to leave their vehicles behind.
Bit of wildlife about heard Cuckoo and Yellowhammer amongst others. Paid £15/night with ehu for two.

We have just returned from a weekend on this site, we were there for the steam rally which was great & well worth going to, there are plenty of shops & take always near by & the area was very nice, however the site was not so great.
It is messy & untidy with a lot of hazards for children & no where for them to play, a lot of money has been spent on the log cabins & the toilets & the rest of the site is quite neglected, there are many caravans left on the site permanently & a lot of these are untidy.
We were all put on the top field and the amount of tents & caravans squeezed into one field was ridiculous, we were on top of each other & they still kept sending them on.
The shower block yes is new, however each time we went in, it was not clean and outside of it is rubble & objects covered with black sacks & long grass & nettles every where. We were also charge £20 per night which it is certainly not worth & they even charged us £2 for our 1 year old baby & 2 year old toddler. We will certainly not be returning.

We knew it was going to be a nice weekend so we knew it was going to be busy, we called up and yes they had spaces, and yes it was flat they said. However.
The main field was busy and yes it was very nice flat, mown short, and the new toilet and shower block was fantastic, however I was a little confused about where the showers was, there seemed to be communal showers I think, that's the confusing bit.
However, we had to pitch on the overflow park which we were not told, this was very uneven and bumpy, and the showers and toilets were a lot to be desired. They were clean but very dated and in need of a makeover.
But on the whole a nice site with lovely walks through elvaston country park grounds which were opposite. Value for money.

The site is set on a complex of fishing lakes and holiday lodges and has plenty of room for touring campers. The site was flat with good size pitches which you could choose on arrival and all had new electrical hook up boxes.
The new toilet / shower facilities were some of the best I had seen in a long time and were kept really clean, there was 2 unisex shower cubicles and a wetroom facility too (the only thing I would have like to have seen was a mop and bucket accessible to clean shower floors after use)
Local shops in nearby Borrowash were good with there being a large Somerfield with good parking.
Would I use this site again? I'm booking up soon for a return visit!

Visited Beech Wood for the fifth time over the May bank holiday weekend. I have watched this campsite grow over the years to one of the best campsites I have ever visited (and I have camped for a long time).
The new ablution facilities are simply the best ever seen on a camp site. The owners Colin and Sharon (fantastic people) can really be proud of what they have achieved.
Plenty of hook-ups every where, loads of open spaces and something for everyone. My children love the go-karting. Sadly I am guilty of being one of the 'noisy crowd' referred to previously, for which I apologise for very sincerely. We were a private party hosting a re-union to raise funds for charity.
