We have used this site several times over the past year for precisely the reasons that others have moaned - everything is laid back and relaxed and once you have been for the first time then all further visits become easier. You are encouraged to find a pitch that suits you so if the shop is shut then find a pitch! All the pitches do have electric hook up and are on the flat. The owners are very relaxed and laid back and more than happy for you to pop into the shop the next day and pay.
The site has some poor points in that there are a couple of rows of stored caravans that are a little run down and there are some dotted about the site that look like they could do with some TLC. There is also no play area for the kids although the pitches on the main field are huge so unless there is a special camping weekend on then there is usual lots of room for play or football.
Good points - fishing lakes to walk around with the usual bunnies and ducks to feed, the toilets are superb, the washing up facility is now open and shortly the Elsan point in the main field will be open so no more long walks with a full loo! Locally there is the Harrington Arms which isn't really for kids although a short drive can take you into Derby for KFC, McD's etc or in the other direction into Shardlow which has a host of river/canal side pubs with great food and real ales. Elvaston Castle is a 2 minute walk away and ideal for walking or cycling - that too has a cafe with tea,coffee,ice cream etc.
Definitely worth a visit

We stayed for about 3 weeks in March. This place is very pleasant, the owner is friendly, and if he or his wife are not around you can phone the number on the reception door. The reception isn't always manned but you can phone at any civilised hour.
There is a nice atmosphere to the place, there are a few long term weekend vans around, but it's dead quiet and everyone we met was polite and pleasant. The nice thing is that there aren't those signs everywhere like 'no dogs, no BBQ's no fun, no camping (!)' - the point is it's a very relaxed place, cool and easy, nice for a quiet break.
The toilets are new and quite swish, great big showers with plenty of room to get dressed. The only problem I saw, just once, was some mud on the shower floor, but that was because an inconsiderate user didn't take their shoes off, generally the cleanliness is pretty good.
There's a hi-tech new chemical loo disposal point under construction, so that guests at the far field don't have to go too far with the dreaded Thetford cassette, the owner is clearly investing some money in the site.
Above all, the views of the Trent Valley from the camping field are really panoramic, it's really 'airy'.
The Harrington Arms is a ten minute walk down the road (pavement all the way), the food isn't that cheap, but it's a cut above average pub food, and it's a cosy traditional country pub with a snug area for drinkers rather than being an ersatz restaurant like so many places nowadays.
In summary, it's very relaxed, reasonably priced, nice people, nice atmosphere, good facilities. We'll be back for sure.

We're relatively new to caravanning, having previously tended to Holiday in Europe - BUT because of the Euro exchange rate have decided to Holiday at home a bit more! We borrowed a friends caravan and went out a couple of times, then took the plunge and bought one of our own.
We stayed relatively local (we live in Nottingham) and booked into Beechwood Park, just opposite Elvaston Castle in Derby.
Well, what a beautiful place this is. The owners were very friendly, and directed us to a lovely flat field overlooking 3 lakes at the far end of the Park. There were brand new Electric Hook-up units adjacent to our pitch, and 4 street lamps to light up the field. The icing on the cake was the best Toilet/Shower facility I've ever seen - it was spotlessly clean and looked like it had just been built - there was even a family shower room, colour coordinated toilets and a hair dryer and full length mirror. Next door was a Pot washing area to rival the Toilet Block and a 'wishing well' type of water point housing two water taps -ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!
There is a 300 acre Country Park literally over the road - great for the kids, with a cafe and an old stately home.
There's a pub in the the village selling real ales and proper home cooked food.
Just 1 mile away is a little village called Borrowash with a supermarket, Post Office, paper shop etc etc.
There's a lovely building going up on the front car park at Beechwood Park which I was told was going to be new reception area which would also sell teas, cakes etc
Overall, I was immensely impressed with this Campsite. Its also got a little 'village' of Log Cabins/chalets. We're going back at Easter and we can't wait!

Just had a couple of nights here to set up for the new season. Very convenient - only 3 miles from our service agent, and seven from home.
Arrived Thursday afternoon - no one about and the shop closed. Note on door gave mobile number to call. Took six calls over an hour to raise a reply, which was very peremptory. Got to the main barrier gate less than two minutes later expecting to be met. No one! After another mobile call a bedroom window opened and a voice said to pitch anywhere except the top field and come to the office 'tomorrow morning'.
Found majority of units on site looking like long term pitches, some obviously being lived in full time. Indeed there was virtually a 'shanty' village of something like 20 'vans in two rows close together just round the corner from the office.
However no noise - even from the nearby airport -and a good night. People obviously had consideration when leaving site in the morning, as we heard nothing, but many cars had gone when we got up. TV reception is good. The Harrington Arms pub just down the road is expensive.
Arriving at office the following morning - it was still closed - but a chap was walking up the drive, who I suspect was the owner. He rattled the door and shouted for someone to come. The office opened. We booked in for two nights, but it has to be said that the reception was indifferent to say the least. Shop only seemed to have cold drinks and ice cream and a few camping bits. Still £14 a night wasn't bad for such a conveniently situated site in pleasant countryside.
Elvaston Castle Country Park is across the road, and makes a pleasant afternoon stroll. Be better if the tea shop didn't shut at 3 o'clock! Has lots of events during the summer.
Small supermarket, take-aways and other shops at Borrowash - about a mile down the road, and easy access into Derby via the A6. M1 access is also easy to/from Junction 24.
There is a new facility block between middle and upper fields. Two unisex showers, but clean toilet facilities. However these weren't serviced during our stay. One men's loo had no paper, and a second ran out (there are only three), whilst liquid soap dispensers were both empty. Toilet rooms could do with automatic door closers. Washing up sinks in an adjacent room in the same building.
Not a site that I would stay on at peak times, but OK for a night or two in early or late season. Could do with some hard standing. Despite previous comments the ground was soft in places.

Ideal for those who like to fish with full on site tackle shop. As previously mentioned new shower block finished to a very high standard, but only two showers for both male and female may lead to waiting to use these facilities.
No problem with freeview TV, pitches relatively flat but when we stayed the grass needed cutting, very laid back at reception told to find our own pitch.
Borrowash only 1.5 miles away with both Indian and Chinese take aways, Derby only 10 minutes drive away. Site shop had bare essentials and would recommend you go well prepared food wise. Harrington Pub seemed expensive with main courses ranging from £10-£15,good choice of pubs in Shardlow

Stayed here for one night on our way down South. The campsite is lovely, the toilet block is the best I have ever seen, really really lovely.
There are some go karts there which are great fun.
A little shop but seemed to have adhoc opening hours.
The owner was friendly. It had a few different fields to chose from and seemed like quite a big site. Could not see a children's play area but loads of space for them to run wild.
It was lovely and quiet and everyone there seemed friendly. The owners have obviously spent a lot of money and put a lot of effort into making this a really nice campsite.
There was fishing facilities at the back of the field we camped on.

We visited this site as it was the closest we could find to family in Derby with a good review. We were charged £22.00 per night for 2 adults and 3 teenagers plus dog, although quoted £20 when booked by phone but still good value.
We were able to choose our pitch in the field which was not overcrowded. As new campers we have not yet invested in an Elson so stayed within reasonable proximity to the toilet block which was excellent as expected. At no time did we find it busy. There is now a bucket and mop left between cleans for anyone to use as suggested by a previous reviewer. We were surprised that there was no facility for washing up.
The field is definitely very hard. The surface is also quite uneven where trenches have been dug to lay cables for lighting and power.
We will not hesitate to visit again, everyone we met was friendly.

As semi-novice campers, I went with my 2 sons for the weekend mainly for them to try their hands at fishing in the, what we discovered to be, well-stocked lakes. The abundant roach (I think) made this a big hit with the boys (and me!) as absolute novice anglers.
Turned up late-ish (2130) on Friday and no-one was around, so found a spot, set up camp and booked in the following morning.
As the site filled up on Saturday, space for playing reduced, but still just enough space for frisbee and the like.
As others have said:
- ground is very hard and I could have done with a heavier duty mallet - meant the kids were unable to assist in the pegging and un-pegging;
- shower/toilet block very nice;
- surprised at lack of pot-washing facilities;
- small shop with no published opening times. Didn't look too closely but didn't seem to be too well stocked with 'useful' goods/provisions but there is an Asda 5/10 minutes drive away.
Would go back.

We have been for two years running for the steam rally at Elvaston Castle (first week in July). The campsite is right next to the park, which is also good for horse riding and walking, but has the bonus of the fishing and go karting.
A very quiet site with extremely posh loos/showers!
Beware though, when the reviews say hard ground they mean it! We went through several and would recommend taking the thicker storm pegs.

Excellent site for a one night stop. The toilet facilities were excellent; clean, very new and fresh, and free hot water in the well-appointed shower. The pitches were flat and most, if not all, are provided with hook-ups.
One minor gripe - there were no washing up or elsan facilities in the tent field (you have a short walk to another field). I understand that these facilities will soon be in place (and I am sure that the exercise carrying the waste water container did me good.Well, maybe not).
The site was quite quiet, given how busy it was, and even the party with the dance music knocked that on the head at a reasonable time (and replaced it with some quite good acoustic guitar which would have lulled me to sleep had I not been listening too intently).
