A fantastic hidden gem. The perfect place to camp as a couple or with friends.

Beautiful scenery and a nice little walk into castleton.

Weather was bad but that's to be expected in England

Excellent basic site -situation is fabulous within walking distance of Mam Tor and the other peaks nearby and across the fields or down through beautiful Winnats Pass to castleton.

As per previous reviews - can be a bit nippy and windy, it is up high and fairly exposed.

Family are very helpful but not nosey.

Charge £7 pp pn. (July 2019)

Toilets clean and good hot water. Washing-up room complete with fridge-freezer.

One downside re facilities - there is one shower for men (I believe the same for women) and both were so unattractive - algae growth on the concrete floors - that we didn't use them. Also £1 for 3 minutes is a bit steep especially for such unattractive showers! A slosh down in the tent is preferable in those circs.

But it's great! Thanks.

Great site in a perfect location, could access loads of walks from here and the local area. Unfortunately our visit was spoilt by a large group of Polish campers who pitched up near enough on top of us (issue with the site as there are no marked pitches-bit of a free for all) and played loud music through big speakers every night until the early hours.

Has put me off re visiting in the future as it ruined our entire break, shame because the site is beautiful.

This to me is what a basic campsite should be- just that. Lovely flat area to pitch, pretty much where you like. And its at approximately 1400 AMSL which means you have some good views toward Mam Tor and beyond. (Due to the altitude you will often wake up in the cloud inversion that has formed overnight before the sun burns it off, I absolutely love this :)).

Showers are good, £1 gives you 3 minutes which is enough for me. You can buy basic supplies like eggs and milk at the farmhouse.

Prices at time of writing are still £5 pppn, which I think is very reasonable, and I hope they don't increase their prices (too much at least) like a lot of other campsites seem to be doing these days. I am a member of the Derbyshire Soaring Club, flying paragliders off Mam Tor and the surrounding hills, and for me this campsite is the perfect base for flying in the area. I can hike straight to launch from my tent!

Only 'downside', not that it is really but I pick my times at short notice to avoid this, but it is high up, and quite exposed, so it is very susceptible to high winds, and very little shelter. And the last time I stayed here, a group of idiots turned up, revving engines, and arguing til the early hours. People like that should just stay at home. But that isn't a slur against this campsite, unfortunately it is the scourge of campsites nationwide, and seemingly nothing anyone can do to prevent this. But, all in all, this place scores very highly for me :).

Just returned from a night here, Typical farm site, flat-ish field, basic toilet and showers, nothing fancy, but nice and cheap. £14 for a family of three.

Very relaxed owners, little shop selling essentials.

No issues with noise, there was a good mix of campers, from kids to oaps.

Good steep walk into town though!

Stayed at Rowter Farm for 2 nights, and had a great time!2 of us, 1 tent, and 1 car, and £10 a night was a real bargain. The location is perfect, a lovely walk to Castleton, and ideal for Mam tor and various other hikes. Weather was great which always helps, but the views are beautiful, and the field itself ideal for pitching up. Plenty of space, and a relaxed approach to camping.

- Farm owners are friendly and happy to help (including helping me jump-start my car when leaving - thanks again!).

- Facilities fine, £1 for a shower and the waters hot, toilets decent and clean and washing up facilities as well which is a nice touch.

- Fire pits are also available to hire for £5, and good quality dry wood for £5 as well, so even though no camp fires are allowed on the ground (very normal), you can still warm up around a fire at night with a drink or two!

- can't fault it, will definitely be back. Thank you for a great stay.

Stayed here for a couple of nights in august not much to say really, it was a good campsite however they were a few little niggles

Bad bits

1. The field you camp in the car entrance is horrible may of just been the time of year

2. Whilst not a problem for me being a man and not caring about showering the women's showers were always busy.

3. I think because its cheap it attracts a lot of @lets go get drunk in a field for the weekend' types of people.

Good bits.

Its across the road from mam tor

Its only a 25 min walk to castleton

Its really cheap

Always toilet paper!

If you have a problem with someone and tell the land lady she will sort it out.

I would camp here again though and I enjoyed my experience.

Seriously fab camp site - ok some may call it basic, I would call it no fuss, and with scenery like that all around, why would you want any frills?

Welcoming owner, very friendly and pleasant, loos basic but just fine, in fact very clean considering the number of people there over the bank holiday weekend. Showers, I took two 50p's for mine, and was fine, concrete floor so I used flip flops. I've given them 10/10 for facilities because there is no pretense to be anything greater.

Site sort of level, we got there on Friday morning so had the pick of sites, and our trailer tent was fine, there was a great diversity of units, tents to posh caravans, hippie bus to VW camper, and that diversity made it great, groups of friends enjoying the sun, groups of families with kids playing in the mud like proper kids, bit of music, lots of chatter, camp fires, sheep, cows. Seriously read no more, JUST GO.

Surrounding area - well we sat each evening looking at Mam Tor - a short walk away. Castleton an amazing drive through Winnats pass to, or a good footpath from back of campsite. Loads of pubs and good food. Peverill castle, Peake cavern, loads and loads to do.

We have just stayed at Rowter Farm for the second time, the weather was a little grim but hard to fault the campsite.

It is very relaxed, fire pits are allowed, large groups are allowed and the atmosphere is a good one. The facilities are clean but basic, adequate hot water, basics food supplies are for sale in the farm house including tea, coffee and hot chocolate.

Would definitely return, a great base for walking into Castleton and exploring the area.

This was my second stay at Rowter Farm and the location is fantastic. It's great top find a relaxed campsite is a great spot that welcomes it's visitors. The walk to Castleton is great although it's quite a slog to get back up the hill but as you are often fortified with chips and beer it's not too bad.

My only criticism of the site is the rubbish skip which was a bit grim and was overflowing onto the muddy field, it didn't create a nice impression.

We will be back despite the bins!
