Spent the freezing Bank Holiday on the top of Mam Tor in the Peak district, booked very last minute and this was the only site we contacted that had room. The site looked busy, probably 50+ tents on the Saturday night, but despite only having 2 gents toilets and 2 women's and one shower of each (5mins heavenly hot water for only 50p) saw no queueing at all. On the downside quite a walk from the village and pubs, and as its high you feel the elements a bit more, although the camping field is enclosed. We found the site tricky to find the 1st time, we managed to drive past the gate twice before working it out! On the plus side £4 per person per night on a bank holiday weekend, farm shop on site, total feeling of isolation and great views make it highly likely we will return.

Wow this campsite was hard to find! Please note that following a SAT Nav does not take you in the right direction and looking for a large sign is a no go!. Basically follow the signs to Castleton, go straight through the village follow the signs to Speedwell caven and Blue John, it will basically take you up through the hills either side until you reach a T junction. (sign posted right for Blue John) Go straight on and about 10 meters on the left you will see a silver gate with a VERY small poster sign which says Rowter Farm. Go through the gate and follow the road until you see the fram on the left. This campsite is basic but OK, no good if you want all singing and dancing facilities. We decided to stay for 2 nights last bank holiday and during the Saturday Day it became very busy, its basically pitch where you want, so if you want a space with a bit of shelter then get there early, unfortunately we wasn't that lucky!. The shop has basic supplies and the toilet facilities were always supplied with loo roll. Washing and shower were alright too and surprised with it being a bank holiday that we didn't have to queue to use anything. Down side to this campsite (if you ever find it in the first place) is that if the weather has forecast wind and you have not been fortunate enough to get a space near the edge then I would re-consider! We had to pack up and leave on the Sunday as it was far too windy, you are basically in the middle of a field on a top of a hill with nothing to shelter you. General feeling, nice atmosphere, people abide to the rules, but do take note that you are in line with Manchester airport flight path which when you are trying to get to sleep and you can hear the planes engines when they are starting to descend does get quite annoying! would give it 6/10

We stayed at this site for the August Bank Holiday (2006) and had a great time. There were seven of us in four tents and we all managed to pitch in a circle facing each other without any problems and without causing any other campers any obstruction.
At £4 per person per night, I was worried that we would be disappointed with the facilities. We weren't. True, there were only two toilets per gender, but there was rarley a que for either.
The site itself is located right at the top of Winnats Pass and is quite a walk from Castleton. We walked down on the first day and nearly died from the walk back up due to our total lack of fitness. The next day, we simply drove. But if you're up for it, its worth the walk for the scenery.
While we were there, rest and relaxation were the order of the day, and although the weather was absolutly awful, a good time was had by all.
I would reccommend this site to anyone looking for a cheap and cheerful campsite to pitch their tent and enjoy a good walk.
At £4 a person you really can't grumble. And to top it off, the owners/staff were always more than happy to help.
One final thing worth mentioning is that, contrary to earlier reviews of this site, dogs are indeed allowed. We kept ours on a lead at all times, obviously, and he had a great time too.
I would certainly visit this site again.

We stayed here for the August BH weekend-we booked last minute and it was the first of about 10 sites to have space. The facilities are basic 1 loo for men, 1 urinal and 1 shower (50p for 5 mins), 2 cubicles for women and again only 1 shower and one sink with an intermittent supply of hot water for pot washing. These were all as clean as they could be. We paid £10 per night for 2 adults 2 kids (under 8) large tent and 1car. The farm is in a great location in the shadow of Mam Tor, but its altitude means its really windy, really windy, so windy we were kept up at night, our brand new tent leaked as the rain was forced through by the wind. The facilities couldn't cope with the numbers (about 100 tents) and there were queues for everything. Having said all that we had a great time, loads of nice families for the kids to play with and I met someone I hadn't seen for 20 years! One family who had been there for a week said that there were only three other tents all week.

I booked over the phone and the owner didn't mention no dogs - so when I arrived, I started to pitch my tent and she came over to say no dogs as it is a working farm with sheep dogs. So I had to leave and find somewhere else!

This site is situated above Winnats Pass near to Castleton. It looks out on to Mam Tor. The caves & caverns are close by. My Husband & I took our children 2 girls aged 7 & 3, for 5 nights over the bank holiday. We loved this site. The owners were very friendly especially to our daughters (who were forever asking them to feed the lambs etc) Although the facilities are basic we never had to queue for the loos or the washing up room, and most importantly considering it was a very busy bank holiday, the facilities were clean. There were lots of young people participating in the Duke of Edinburgh award (very well behaved young adults!). Site is otherwise filled with mostly tents. As I say it was busy but because you have such wonderful space around you don't feel over crowded. We shall definitely be returning to this nice working farm in a wonderful location.

Had a very pleasant stay, bearing in mind having read the reviews prior to our journey there! A big field with only two tents, pitched ours in the corner to keep sheltered from the wind. Eventually found the ladies in the farmhouse courtyard, an old stable, with very clean toilets inside. Also the ladies shower was clean and plenty of of hot water too. Over the bank holiday, campers came and went, without any trouble or loud noise. Even the small groups of school children were well behaved and polite. Overall we enjoyed our stay, and will be staying again - all a bargain for 4 pounds a night!

Rowter Farm lies on the bleak high ground above the Winnats gorge near Castleton. At a height of 435m it is buffeted by occasionally strong winds and was quite cold, especially at night, even in late April or early May. The site itself is one fairly spacious field. Most places to pitch are quite flat and the grass is reasonably close cropped, so choosing a spot and putting up the tent isn't a chore. The facilities leave a bit to be desired with only one toilet and one clean and tidy shower per gender (50p per use). There's also a separate washing up room and outside drinking water supply. The farm shop is literally in the porch of the main building and just sells basic stuff like eggs, long life milk, etc. Castleton is the closest village and is just over a mile away by road or footpaths. There's a good view of Mam Tor and Rushup Edge from the site and if the weather is good you can watch the paragliders swoop from these tops. Blue John cavern and the other famous caves are all with a mile or two so are close to hand. Not a bad site but the toilet block could do with a bit of expansion. Having said that, we visited on a Bank Holiday weekend and didn't have any problems.

May 2004 Recommended by a friend when he went a few weeks ago for a few days during the week for its quietness.
Field was fine and it is quite cheap. It was packed for the Bank holiday weekend and I think that with only one (un-plumbed) urinal in the gents (plus a proper loo) and one shower per sex they should have either restricted the number of visitors for the weekend or got some portaloos in as I have seen done before in peak times. Can't help but feel that we were getting a tad ripped off and the toilets really did stink by the end of the weekend!
Definately a site to go to in the qiueter times - the scenery is great and the walks down to Castleton are lovely. If they could improve the toilet facilities just a bit then it would be great!
Will be back, but only for a qiuet mid-weeker.

june 2004 Just got back from an over night stay here. Have to say this wouldnt have been our first choice of place to stay (or the second) but as we just packed and drove without booking we didnt have much choice as all the other places we tried were fully booked. We found it easy enough but it can be easily missed as its just a small white gate that you have to look out for. We paid £12 for 2 adults and 3 children, which we assume is £3 per adult and £2 per child per night. The lady who took the money at the farm house wasnt over welcoming - took our money pointed out the toilets and then left us to it. There's no set pitches here - you just go where ever you fancy.
The ladies toilets were basic - a shed type building with 2 toilets in - also used as a storage area for the farmhouse - lots of spiders, flies and spider webs. The washing up area was very clean and tidy though and there was a drinks machine although a small drink of tea was 50p. All the toilet, shower and wash area facilities are quite a way from the field so if you need the toilet during the night be careful where you walk. Seemed to be a lot of backpackers stayed there and some of them were quite noisy although there is supposed to be no noise after 11pm.
The kids enjoyed it - plenty of room to kick a ball around. We did enjoy the 2 days there
