The site is in a fantastic location and I found it straight away with no problems. The views were fantastic (when everything wasn't covered in cloud), however being so high up does mean you are exposed to the elements.

The site itself is fairly basic (just how I like it). It's basically two large fields and a toilet block that was kept really clean and has showers and washing up facilities.

The family that works the farm were all really friendly helpful and even split a box of teabags for me as I forgot mine.

I arrived early on the Friday afternoon and had a good choice of where to pitch the tent, I am glad I did as the site did get very very busy, but I suppose this is just down to it being a bank holiday but I still think that they should have closed the bookings earlier.

I will definitely be returning there with friends and my children in the near future as its a great location from which to explore the peak district and its really good value at 5 quid a night per adult.

Basic site consisting of two large fields. Exposed to the elements although there is some protection from perimeter walls.

We stayed over the August bank holiday which was busy with, surprisingly many families and non walkers.

Facilities are basic however they were very clean which is a credit due to the size of the site.

Noisy group causing havoc and unfortunately nothing done about it but being Bank Holiday, can be expected. All in all an adequate site.

Rowter farm is indeed a working farm right at the top of Winnats Pass.

Dont be fooled if your sat nav takes you all the way down to the bottom of the Pass, ours did! The tiny sign on the roadside next to their farm gate didn't help -make the sign bigger please farmer Rowter

The campsite is a huge flat square field with loads of space.

Cost us £10 for a Saturday night for a medium tent, 1 car,2 adults and a dog.

The family are friendly & have a tiny farm shop selling the norm plus hot coffee/hot choc etc which there was a queue for on the sunday morning - smelt like heaven !

Showers, toilets, washing up room etc all were basic but lovely and clean and stocked with loo rolls, washing up liquid etc which was nice to see.

All in all, a great basic site 2 miles from Castleton, Fabulous views of Mam Tor.

One tiny bug bear is the 'no noise after 10pm'. There was a large group of people right in the middle of the field, with loud music,a football and an aray of Corsas/106s/Saxos etc. These guys and gals were all old enough to know that 3am was an unacceptable time to start chatting and singing etc with an argument the next morning of who was going to clean up the 'sick'.

We are definitely going to visit this site again as a great base for Edale/Castleton etc

Stayed at this site many times it is very rustic and perfect for the proper camping experience very cheap and in a good spot ideal for the walker. Toilets very basic hence my girlfriend not liking this site so would be nice if they improved just to make it easier to persuade her to come. Nice big field easy to find a suitable place out of the wind can get quite busy but even when full its not over crowded, all in all my favourite place to stay.

Rowter Farm is a nice campsite, located in a beautiful setting on top of the hills over Castleton.

For what I consider 'English Campsites' (basically grassy parking lots with tents and caravans side by side around the perimeter), Rowter Farm is fairly nice. Clean showers and toilets (make sure you bring 50 pence coins, it will take two for a decent shower and it doesn't accept pounds). But if you're looking for a 'true' camping experience (I know that's snobby, but many of you agree), ie quiet, solitude and the feeling that your actually out in the country, then keep looking. I'd suggest Whitmore Lea in the Edale Valley for a much more authentic camping experience, breathtaking 360 degrees view and wild environment.

Finding the site was a bit difficult late at night, as Google Maps gave us the wrong address for Rowter Farm. Drive through Castleton, and once outside of town, there is a fork in the road. Take the branch to the left, and you will wind steeply up the hillside for 1-2km, until you reach an intersection. At the intersection, take a left, and after less than a km, you will see a gated drive entrance on the left side of the road. Once through the gate, drive along a gravel road until you see the entrance to the farm on the left (poorly marked). If you reach the gate on the other side of the hill, you've gone too far.

Firstly we had no problems finding the campsite; if you arrive coming through Castleton and up Winnet's Pass it is directly on your left hand side of the main road a little further along, you have to open the big silver farms gates and drive up to the campsite.

We went as a four and had two 2 man tents, we are not experienced campers as we haven't been for years and wanted somewhere to start getting back into it. Rowter was perfect. The campsite is basically a field, that means you can pitch where ever and how ever you want which is great. The family that run the farm are very friendly and you can buy drinks, ice cream, fresh eggs and bacon etc there when you pay for your pitch (£5 per person).

The toilets are very basic(an old barn that has been made into a loo and shower)but these are perfectly functional and all you need for a night or a weekend, although there are only 2 cubicles for the ladies and 1 shower so in busy periods this may be a pain but it was fine when the campsite was half full. There is hot water so you can have a wash and clean any pots and pans and it is all kept reasonably clean. You should not expect anything fancy when coming here because it is basic, a walkers/overnight place, but it makes it all the better if you enjoy camping properly without all the silly extras.

It was a lovely atmosphere, everyone was friendly and by ten o'clock it was fairly quite but as it is just a field and your left to your own devices do not expect it to be silent at night, this is a place people come to have fun and relax, not a silent place but still quiet enough to sleep.

The site is only about a mile from Castleton but it would be a hard walk back up Winnat's Pass! Extremely steep! We are all fit 24 year olds and did not dare attempt to walk all the way back up to the Farm. If you are camping there to go hiking and walking though it is perfect. If you are lazy like us then you can just drive down and park for a small fee.

There are pubs and shops in Castleton so if a BBQ is not your thing then you won't go hungry. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and it has made up our mind to go back soon and continue camping! If you want somewhere that you are left to just do what you like and enjoy yourselves on the basics then this is perfect.

The site can be found at the top of Winnats Pass, although can be tricky to find due to the SAT NAV sending you to the bottom of the pass (!) and the very small sign pointing its way.

Large clean field, so can pitch anywhere, although I would recommend near the walls (we didn't). The site can get very windy and rainy on a bad night (like we found).

Friendly working farm with basic toilets, showers, washing up room, wash room.

Tiny reception selling eggs, coffee etc

Noisy the night we went purely due to a large mixed group of young adults who should have known better to be quiet !

Dont let this put you off, we will definitely be going again, 1 tent, 2 adults a car and a dog all for £10.

Good base for the area.

Large site situated within 2 miles of Castleton village.

One main field which is very large so noisy tents can be avoided. Good flat ground and grass in great condition.

This is without doubt a very rustic site and aimed mainly at walkers, not a place for the family at all. The location is superb right on top of the Castleton Ridge and just about walking distance of the village with a good torch and level of fitness.

I stayed here as part of a very large walking group, no questions were asked when I erected my 8-Berth unit and found the price very good value.

The shower blocks were ok although not enough if the site were to become busy. As with all 50p units be prepared to spend £1 to shower. The toilets are very basic and could do with a cash injection of at least £200 which would make all the difference. That said they were well kept and toilet paper provided etc.

Would return although 3 days at this site would be enough.

Stayed at this campsite last year, and going back this weekend.

I went with my local Explorer Scout group, to do some walking around Mam Tor. The campsite was EXCEPTIONALLY quiet, and very large - we could take a corner of the field if we wanted.

Had no trouble with noise or anything like that. Toilet and washing facilities were OK, but nothing out of the norm. Generally, if you're looking for a couple if nights somewhere for a very cheap price, then Rowter Farm is right for you.

We went in the middle of a week. The field is very large and there weren't many other people there which was really good.

The field was level and dry, next to the farm (a working farm). The owners were very friendly and kept themselves to themselves. There is a good room for washing up, one male shower, one female shower which were both clean and basic. The toilets were basic but clean with soap and paper provided. I think these are best when there are few people staying.

The campsite is quite far from town, which has only a few shops (fairly tourist orientated) but is close to many public footpaths and Mam Tor. Cooking stoves allowed provided they are off the ground. Water, bins are provided and the farm has a small selection of basic goods to sell.

It is a little tricky to spot the turning from the road so look carefully!

I would recommend this campsite and would certainly visit again.
