Nice season and static pitches but for tourers not worth the premium it charges. One of the places that charges per child/dog/ awning etc so for family of 4 with a dog it’s cheaper to get a travelodge if it’s an overnight. That said the money is placed into the Site as it is clean and tidy and well maintained. Small on site pub was nice and staff friendly. Toilets are clean all be it small portacabin dressed up as a log cabin. Showers are tiny and cost extra to use(tokens only). Only tourer Access to site is along a really bad road(that’s not the site owners fault as 3 ways in and only 1 suitable for caravans). Site is on a hill and even use of ramps couldn’t get van level. Also very tight. There would be No way I could have got van parked if I hadn’t got a motor mover as space opposite was not enough. Signs up everywhere saying what is NOT allowed. A lot of season vans with their kids acting like they own the place with them running about in between vans.
I have stayed in better sites at half the price

This site was a good site, hard to get to as you have to go under a bridge, the facilities were easy to get to and well lit, very friendly place and would go back to that site if there was another way to get there.

I stayed on this site for two days so I could do walking and geo-caching with a friend, who lives only 10 minutes away. I myself am only 20 minutes drive from it but it seemed the best option to stay there so we could get the best of the very short days. I'm a lady travelling on my own so my first bitter pill to swallow was having to pay £23 pn, that being for two people and their unit. This really annoys me as I'm paying twice as much as a couple and using less water. The fella in the office thought he was cushioning the blow by saying a couple with three very young children would pay the same as the children would be free! So five people would be using five times as much water as me but still only paying £23 - yep, that REALLY made me feel better. Having got over that one, he then offered me shower tokens at 25p each. I could have told him where to stick them when I was told I would only get 6 minutes for that. Needless to say, I used my own shower!
The final blow was when my friend turned up, ready to take me out in his car, once I got my campervan set up on the expensive pitch. Apparently the rule is visitors have to pay £4 a day to bring their cars through the barrier. My friend wasn't happy about paying so, because the site was quiet, they said he could park in the visitors' car park and ignore the signs indicating the 15 minutes parking limit.
I only visited the facilities once and was even more gobsmacked to note that there weren't even privacy cubicles, in the ladies. I HAVE been on expensive sites before where I've paid around the same price but the facilities were excellent with no limitation on showers. And they were free!
The site isn't huge, there's nowt spectacular about it, the pitches are sloped - even the EDP was as basic as could be, and not particularly clean. Nope, local this may be and handy for Beamish Museum but I would rather do the 20 minute drive, day after day than spend that sort of money, on a money-grabbing site which couldn't even offer some sort of discount for a solo traveller during the off-season.

We chose this site as we wanted somewhere close to Beamish Museum. The museum is about a 30 minute walk uphill. There is a pub there recalled the Shepherd and Shepherdess which is not dog friendly and the garden tables are situated around the outside of the car park behind the cars, strange layout.
We booked two nights prior to arrival but due to the badly thought through, narrow and short entrance layout, we spent 15 minutes queuing to get in with the back end of our van hanging out into the road. It was £33 per night for which you would assume it would be a lovely site, oh how wrong we were! It depends on what you really want from a site and I understand we are all different.
If you want to spend lots of money to be packed in on a vertical pitch in amongst statics, pick this site. If you want to feel like your in Durham's answer to Benidorm, pick this site. If you want the kids from the static caravans running around the site screaming and shouting until midnight each night while their parents are making similar amounts of noise, pick this site. If you want to hear karaoke from the on-site clubhouse (really unfriendly to visitors) until gone 1am pick this site. If you want totally cheap, old-fashioned and unsanitary toilets and showers which you have to pay extra for pick this site.
To top our stay off, once again due to the cheap and crap design of the entrance/exit and vans having to queue to get in/out because a massive bin lorry was trying to get in, despite using the barrier pass to exit, we found out the barrier has no sensor on it to realise there is a vehicle beneath it. Subsequently the barrier came down on the rear of our brand new motorhome. When I went to reception to ask them to lift the barrier, instead of the old guy showing any concern or apology he had a go at me and accused us if trying to jump the barrier!
We have visited hundreds of sites around the British Isles, the vast majority of them wonderful. I have never been driven so strongly to ever write a review however, if there was an option to give this 0 out of 10 I would. Please don't waste your money going there. If you want to go to visit Beamish there are plenty of other sites around and you can park your motorhome in a dedicated car park at Beamish Museum.

Sloping pitches across site and not many grass only
Facilities are amongst statics so quite a walk but kept clean
I stayed from Wednesday to Sunday and Wednesday and Thursday were ok however they took a large group booking for weekend who shouted pitched tents very close to ours, played music excessively loudly started car engines shone car lights deliberately into tents swore and discussed drugs and vomited around a family site. Complained Friday night they apologised said they would have a word but unfortunately it was much much worse on Saturday site.
They did not even apologise.

In general this is a perfectly nice site. It manages to achieve that ideal level of tidiness and appearance that on the one hand makes me feel that I'm not in a Third World shanty town but on the other hand doesn't make me feel that I mustn't stand on the grass or fart outdoors. Yes there are sites like that: I was on one last week.
However I have one area of criticism: it concerns the toilet block. This appears to have been commissioned by a skinflint and built by a team of totally incompetent but enthusiastic schoolboys. I can only speak of the Men's room: I didn't research the Ladies'.
The hand drier was possibly bought from Toys R Us as a dolls' house accessory. The plate on the side says 900W (they are normally at least 3000W) but I don't think that plate tells the truth. I'd say the heat available is roughly the same as a tired gnat blowing on your skin. Whilst I was using it other inmates passed comment such as, 'Tha'd be better running round t'side with your arms outstretched that using that useless %$£&* thing!'
In the toilet cubicles anyone with a normal anatomy will find that their left shoulder can't be accommodated whilst sitting on the pedestal because the large lavatory paper dispenser occupies the space where the shoulder should be.
The taps in the Gents' are the type where you have to press on them to get water. The instant you let go the water stops. So how do you rinse your hands? One at a time is the answer.
Not important functionally but the way the cladding has been done on the sill, with a raw end visible right across the window width, betrays I think the general low standard of fittings and décor.
I must offer praise for the outdoor taps, which allow easy connection of a hose (unlike a recent site where the thread had been sawn off, meaning that I had to stand there getting soaked while my tank filled).
TV reception is from Pontop Pike, nearby but screened by trees and thus a bit hit and miss. Aerial rods should be horizontal and the aerial should point west-south-west. There are few pitches where satellite won't work.
The road to the Beamish Museum is very steep. If you walk it you'll be pretty tired by the time you reach the museum. The same applies to the Shepard and Shepardess pub.

We stayed here for a week at the beginning of March and decided to hire a static caravan instead of taking our 2-berth tourer. I am glad we did as I wouldn't like to tow 'anything' to the site, the road it was situated on had a sign saying 'Unsuitable for Caravans' at both ends!. We only visited the Clubhouse once and found the patrons decidedly unfriendly ( They were all Static owners. ) Its best feature is its close proximity to Beamish Museum where we spent 3 days. We paid £150:00 through Hoseasons which was a bargain as 7 nights in our tourer would have been £161:00 and we used less fuel and where able to visit places both on our journey to the site and our return trip.

A very big site packed with static caravans. On site pub which we didn't use the tourer area is a long way from the toilets. Very handy site if visiting Beamish museum. All in all not bad. We were there in March so it wasn't busy so the facilities were not under pressure but for the size of the site maybe in the high season it might be a matter of waiting for the showers. It's extra for the showers tokens having to be bought from the shop or pub, at £23 a night it really should be included, it only 25p to get 6 mins in the shower a bit miserly we thought. Won't be going back. The main business seems to be the static caravans. Some pitches were taken as seasonal tourer pitches. Also one can only leave when the shop is open as the gate and shower fobs have to be returned to get your £20 deposit back.

Booked this site because we wanted to revisit Beamish and also see relatives in Newcastle. First problem was finding it - they told not to rely on sat nav so we turned it off when we got to Birtley and tried to follow the directions they gave us. Got there eventually. This is a pleasant quiet site (we were there midweek in termtime )- but not many touring pitches and we had to book a grass pitch because it was the only type suitable for an awning. Not very dog friendly - no dog waste bins on site and their rules (there are a lot of them) say that dogs should be on a short lead all the time. Most of the best touring pitches seemed to be permanently occupied so obviously it a popular spot for people who can't afford a static. Don't recommend this site for tourers especially the inexperienced as the roads are very narrow and hilly and badly signed.

First time we have stayed at this campsite and it was very nice. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The site and amenities were all very clean.
There is a pub on site which is nice. Only problem we found was that it was a bit expensive.
All in all a very good site and will definitely be going back.
