Found this to be an expensive site considering we had no bin up on the top section for our rubbish and had to leave the site completely to walk the dog, it seemed a little grubby and tatty could do with a few pounds spent on it although the club house was nice and I was informed that the toilets and showers were of a good standard (personally I use my vans facility's).

We called at this site for two nights, first night quite enjoyable, obviously a lot of regulars using the bar, (which aint that big, the picture taken must have used the widest angle lens available!), bingo and back to van to be rocked to sleep by the near on force 10 winds. The second night however was a joke, gang of seven tenters, shouting across the field, walking between pitches, till the police came, then finally packed in at 3am. When we spoke to the warden the next day, it was a booking from some local yokels, taken in error whilst he was away, alledegedly, if he knew all this, why take the money, why not just refuse entry on arrival ? This is quite a pleasant site , although small pitches and a sloping site, and to me expensive for what is on offer,£16.50 per night , no awning and EHU. The elsan point could do with sorting out, someone should take them to a CC club site or Bainland to show them what is acceptable, can,t see us going back.

A mixture of very sloping site and some flat pitches on the hilltop area with nice views looking towards Newcastle. The site is very close to Beamish and the museum and it is a short 10 min walk from the Shepherd & Shepherdess pub. The pub itself will take children and is very friendly although can get really busy at times.
The site pub was not used by us as we only stayed overnight but does seem to get very busy. The on-site club closes from 5pm until 7.30pm every day. There is a small play park on site but has limited facilities (we have a 2 year old) and not much for younger children.
The toilet's and shower block is very small, but has good heating and the showers cost 25p for which you need a token. There are only 2 showers however so it may get busy at peak times.
The site shop is basic but there is an ASDA about 3 miles from the site if needed.
Gas exchange is available if required.
If you stay over 11am on departure date you WILL be charged £19.50 for extra night, and the departure time is unusual as it is 12 on all sites we have ever used. I think the site is OK but expensive for what you get.

A very sloping site, nice views very close to Beamish nice walk to a small and friendly pub. The site pub is very busy and small, good play park on site. The toilet's and shower block is very small, you also have to pay for showers. The site shop is basic. If you stay over 11am on departure date you WILL be changed £19.50 for extra night, even if there is no one waiting for the pitch ! which I felt was a bit unfair when we have stayed at lots of sites before and this has never happened before. I would not go back to this site, I think it is very over priced and not very friendly.

Toilet/shower block kept spotlessly clean with frequent checks. Nice play area for kids and small pub right next to it on site, very friendly and kids welcome. But if you are in a tent then ask to see the site first and pick your plot carefully. A lot of the touring pitches are on a slope and the tents and touring caravans / motor-homes are all in together. Which can make it a bit noisy if you are in a tent. We were between two caravans and had not realised the amount of noise a caravan generates! water pumping / telly / doors / footsteps. There is not a lot of space between pitches either but if you check out your pitch first you can be moved with no problem if there are pitches available. Nice place for families wanting a bit of company provided by the bar, but not a place for a peaceful outdoor camping experience.

Having returned from Bobbie Shaftoes Caravan Park where I spent a very enjoyable Easter vacation I would like to share with you some of the joys I experienced and hopefully inspire others to spend time in the wonderful countryside surrounding Beamish. The site is situated very close to the famous Beamish Open Air museum at which you can spend all day easily. The children Jack(11) and Amy(9) were never bored and found plenty to entertain themselves. After that - forest walks , river walks , horse riding, cycling the list goes on. The family atmosphere at Bobby Shaftoes complements the surrounding family orientated attractions making us all feel welcome and not wanting to leave. Having visited the site many years previously I was pleased to find it is still run by the same family who continue to engender an atmosphere where families can have a peaceful tranquil break while the children play. I have noticed many changes to the site including lush new toilet and shower facilities , refurbished clubhouse , and new play area. The shop reception has had a facelift and is stocked with broadrange of camping/caravaning accessories and groceries. A five-a-side football pitch was under construction when I reluctantly left! A singer in the club on the Saturday night had everyone joining in and the kids dancing. Followed by an hour of bingo . Some things never change!

Site is very well situated for some good walks and scenery. Not at all geared towards the hiker or backpacker though, because of the criminal single camping rates. The site is expensive with a capital E and they seem to slap a charge on everything but the air you breathe. New road through the camping site has just enabled idiots in cars to screech around it all hours of the night: definitely not an improvement! All in all, no where near the best Durham / Newcastle site, although it could be, with a little consideration towards those that pay to stay there.

A sloping site that consists mainly of fixed statics, with another open field of rough nearly level gravel pitches and EHUs for both tourers and motorhomes. The facilities are adequate, the toilets could do with some additional ventilation, the kids play area is close to the on site bar which is very popular, the shop facility is very basic and the site is mainly given over to semi permanent tourers who use the site as a weekend retreat and although friendly has a very parochial feel to it, and would be noisy for campers. The area is handy for Beamish and the Metro centre and the Shepherd and Shepherdess pub is within walking distance and is ok for kids and does reasonable good food.

October 2005 Have stayed here twice and plan to return soon. Exellent site with very friendly staff. The shop is well stocked and not too expensive - good range of campiong accesories , the bar is also reasonable. Its close proximaty to Beamish museum makes it an excellent chioce when visiting there but it is also close to all that the Newcastle area has to offer which is much more than yoiu expect becuase as well as the city there is also wonderful countryside and some great beaches

July 2005 I first visited here last year (july 04) and it was great.
I stayed at bobby shaftos again at the start of the month to find the caretaker had gone =D .. The site has been revamped: The toilet block has been redone inside, with new showers, toilets, disabled toilet/shower facilities. Using the shower this time round, I found that not only did they last twice as long as last time (about 7-10 mins per token) but the temperature was properly regulated, no freezing or scalding feature included this time. Shower tokens are 25p each.
When I visited last year (in tent) I found they had a last field where you could take your pick on where you wished to set up. Now the whole tent field has been turned into tent/caravan plots with a great annoying road running round it all. Now, you are assigned a plot when you register, and that is where you must set up. There is no longer the freedom to play a bit of badminton in the hot weather, as there is not enough free grass to solitaire on.
If you wish to use the laundry room.. tokens cost a whopping £3.50 each per wash, and you have to buy your own washing powder from the shop (or bring your own). The dryer takes 20ps and you get 5 mins dry time per 20p.
All in all, improvements have been made since last year where they lacked.. but other areas have lost it big time, such as the tent field. Not recommended for people going by tent.
