This is a lovely site, small but clean shower block. Great walks through the woods to the Shepherd and Shepherdess pub, which serves very good food. Small clubhouse, which seems to be full of residents from the many static caravans on site.
We had family who were passing by and decided to drop in and visit us for half an hour, until they were asked for £2 each to get on site, and if your not off site by 11am. You will be charged extra!
All in all a nice site, but could be a lot better if you were made to feel more welcome

Thought this campsite was quite pricey, even taking into consideration the time of year. It's very much a family-orientated campsite, so please don't come here if you're after peace and quiet, it was constant noise all day until the quiet time of 11pm, which people did seem to adhere to. It probably didn't help that we were right next to the kids' play area, either.
The facilities here aren't bad, you need to swipe your card to get into the toilets which stops kids getting in and messing around. However, on going to use the shower, I had gotten ready to stand under the jets, popped my token in. And nothing happened. The shower was bust, and there was no sign or anything indicating this. Luckily, I had two tokens with me so I then had to rush all my stuff to the next cubicle, which luckily worked fine. Trouble is, if I'd only have had the one token I'd have been in trouble as it was about 8pm and the shop was shut, leaving me nowhere to purchase a token. We explained the following morning and were refunded without dispute, but found it odd that the site owner hadn't already known that the shower wasn't working.
I didn't experience any queuing for the facilities, but think I was just lucky, as given the size of the site, there aren't many, just two showers, four cubicles and a disabled - and it was the only toilet block on the site. They were fairly clean, though could have been better. Also there were only two washing up sinks, again, could have been more.
Can't comment on the clubhouse as we didn't use it - not really our scene. Also, we were expected to pay the full price before arrival which I thought was a bit harsh. Then, they were surprised we'd already paid when we got there - and told us we were lucky to be on the site because they don't normally take bookings for just one night.
Overall, not bad. Noisy site with fairly good facilities. The location is good, dependent on what you're after, and it's literally around the corner from the Beamish Museum. I'd say if you've got kids you should be OK, providing you don't mind total havoc.

Stayed at the site for three nights as it was nearest for the Gateshead Flower Show where I was an exhibitor.
The pitch was at the top of the hill, on a slope and was windy. I managed to break 7 fibreglass poles trying to put up my Wynster Curlew tent.
Experience was mixed, breaking all those tent poles didn't help. The card, for which £5 cash deposit paid, which you need to drive onto site would not let me in when I returned at night, but did work to get into the loo - just as well. Clearly they have there reasons for needing card entry into the loos, but I found it a pain. Had to find how to get to the club house, in a hurry as shut at 11pm. Apparently it was my fault the card wasn't working and the guy would go to the computer in half an hour to put it right. Then asked for tokens for the shower - non left, can get them from the shop which opens at 9. When I did get tokens, they were clean and there was plenty of hot water, in fact I had to wait for it to stop as there is no stop tap to finish.
The site was clean and grass cut. As mentioned by others the tent pitches are on a slop, so I was sliding off my mat into the side of the van.
Left at 8am, posting my card through the letterbox. Await return of my £5 deposit.
£20 a night for a tent pitch, and what the site offered, I felt the price was steep.
Site more suited to caravans than tents.

Found this site when wishing to visit the Beamish Museum. Its only 1 mile away !
We have a big 12 man SunnCamp XPS tent + MPV, so we were delighted when the tent size was not a problem.
Very quite - very clean, lovely location.
Feels secure.
Plenty of Water stations, good mains hook-up.
Toilet & Shower Block is very nicely kept.
Although the showers require tokens, once you know, they are well worth it as there's plenty of hot water and very clean surroundings.
Staff were extremely helpful, the views from the top field are very pleasing.
Overall impression - nice, clean and tidy campsite. Very close to the Beamish Museum, would recommend it and will definitely stay again.

This was our second visit to this site. Both visits have been for 1 night only because we were stuck for a site. Found the site very hilly and a bit tired. Clubhouse was very nice and friendly. Site warden is very friendly and helpful, toilets are spotless although you must purchase tokens for a shower. Unlike some other reviews I can honestly say the site was deadly quiet from 8pm. Not the kind of site I would pick to visit as it is not my kind of site (prefer flatter sites). Did find the £5 deposit a bit much never see the need for this on small sites like this.

A mixed review for this site. Not far from the A1(M)and close to Beamish open air museum. This Site is on a very steep hill, the only totally flat areas were taken up by statics, and we were perched right at the top of said hill, with great views but very windy. We had EHU and paid £78 for three nights. A small football area, which was uneven and stony and a playground for smaller ones kept our kids busy. We didn't bother with the small clubhouse. The showers and toilets were clean with loads of hot water for your 25p token. Staff were friendly and helpful. Site shop small and limited to essentials, you have to order your morning paper. I was wary of previous reviewers comments on 'after 11pm noise' but during our stay there was next to none and it didn't go on for very long. All in all a decent enough site but beware the hill and accompanying strong winds.

Decided to visit this campsite due to it being only 20 min drive from where we live, as we were only wanting a 2 night stay, so it was nice & handy. On arriving we had to park in the carpark as there is a barrier stopping you driving through. My husband went to the small reception to pay & give details, you have 2 pay a £5 pound refundable deposit for the swipe card, this is to open barrier and also to use the toilet. I did find it very silly to use the swipe card to enter the toilets, as most of the time we were forgetting to take it, so had to walk back for the card.
However we found the site small but nice, with everyone being very friendly. Most of the tent pitches are on a slope, this was not a big problem. The park was fine for the kids, the football pitch was ok.
This site is ideal for Beamish museum, this is walking distance. Also for the Shepherd pub. There is also a village called Sunnyside which is 3 miles from the site, with a spar, and takeaway shops, and also a few pubs, if you wanted to venture out. Toilets and showers are kept very clean. You do have 2 pay 25p for shower and hair dryer tokens, but 7 mins is long enough. The only problem we had while there was there was no hot water working when we wanted to wash the dishes, washing frying pans in cold water just does not work.
All in all we will be returning to this site if we only want to get away for a couple of peaceful nights, but I do think they should change the time to at least 12 to be off the site for, as you dare not have a good few beers the night before

We have visited this site twice now, but nearly did not visit becaused of previous reviews.
This site is a bit on the expensive side and having to be off by 11.Am is off putting, but our 3 kids love it as there is a nice play area right next to the club house and my son loves the football pitch which is fenced off, so no worring about hitting peoples tourers, the club house is nice, they have bingo on, which we have won on both occassions which nearly paid our site fees and on the Bank holiday weekend they had a race night and fancy dress.
There can be a bit of noise when people are coming from the club house this is because a lot of the touring caravans are permanent, but this does not bother us and our oldest child has made friends with a few other kids that are regulars.
The toilets blocks are clean but you have to pay 25p for a token for the showers, but there is plenty of hot water for your token and they are one of the most powerful showers I have been in on sites. The wash up area had no hot water when I went but that was at tea time when most people do there washing up, the site has a basic shop if you forget anything and is next to Beamish Museum so very handy if you wish to visit.

Have just returned from our holidays which part was spent in this camp site We were allocated a spot at the top of the hill, could not get awning up due to very strong winds. We went out the next day only to find on our return someone had erected a tent 2 feet away from our caravan door. We asked them to move to their allocated spot only to find that they were along with another 2 tents opposite us, Noise till 1.30pm in the morning coming and going between tents. Toilet and showers a little to be desired. Only 2 showers and a disable in the ladies to deal with over 80 piches bearing in mind some of the tents had more than 4 people in them. Never once saw anyone checking round the site to make sure everything was okay. Rubbish bins overflowing after the weekend, no facilities for recycling, everything went in the same bin. 25 years in business, they have spent all the money on the shop, toilet block and pub but touring pitches etc need work done on along with the road round the camping area.

Camped here for one night, Sat Aug 18, just myself and husband. Chose this site as we were visiting Beamish Museum and only one we could find near - about a mile away. It was fine for one night but not sure we would want to stay any longer. Lots of static caravans presumably with own facilities but only very small toilet/shower block for the amount of people around (think there was 6 loos and 2 showers). Admission to toilets/showers by a key card which also lifted the barrier for vehicles in & out. Not sure why all this security as the site is in the middle of nowhere in countryside. Good shop for basics. some sloping tent pitches (which we got !) but all pitches marked out. Only problem was groups of people singing and shouting until goodness knows when although there is a "no noise" curfew after 11 am. Not threatening, just noisy! As we were only there for the one night, we just put up with it as we were quite surprised that all the noise was from obviously parked-for-season touring caravans so site management must turn a blind eye to them partying all night! Lovely pub with great food "Shepherd & Shepherdness" about a mile away. Very popular, all tables in about 75% of pub booked, they leave the rest for a first-come-first-served arrangement but it was raining so I guess we were lucky to get a table. Highly recommended place - also with real ale.
