A weekend in a wigwam!
Well. New experience for my family. But what a good one.
The kids adored this site, they played out all day, allowing myself and the better half to really enjoy each others company and a pleasant break, happily knowing the kids were safe with the security of this site. Something about the place just made you feel they were ok rather than when we're at home when we worry if they're out of site. But then I guess that's down to where we live :((
The toilet blocks / wash areas / laundry had to be some of the best we've seen. Spotless and fresh very modern and new looking.
Good shop well stocked with all the essentials plus the bits and bobs you always forget!. I forgot sun cream which they had. Any wonder I forgot it with this summer !
Local pub was ok for a pint. Can't comment on food as we didn't dine with them. Flask inn it's called
Owners or managers ( not sure which and didn't like to ask ) Andrew and Catherine I think. I'm hopeless with names were very helpful. Nothing too much trouble.
Reading previous reviews they mention midges as a problem. Guess I'm not that tasty as they didn't bother me and my family, but then when venturing ino the countryside we always go armed with insect repellant, camomile lotion, TCP etc.
Where we live its not midges its muggers that are a problem. So believe me grouse hill and a wigwam weekend were heaven. Wel'l be back. Thank you.

We were here last year. The site was clean. Toilets were clean too. Showers were good. We picked our site and went to office. Booked pitch. We settled in and then I was sat outside and overheard the owner slagging us off for no reason. We did not drink any alcohol and we were in bed by 10 pm. The mozzies were attacking us bad after 6 pm, it was unbearable.

We visited this lovely site with four other families from Thursday 23rd August to Bank Holiday Monday.
The site is lovely and spacious and the staff very nice. The toilet and showers are clean and well decorated and the washing up area always clean-. The only gripe was we needed a key to open the toilets and washing up area and with a family there always seemed to be someone else with the key! (There is a lovely family washroom with bath that you can pay for too)
The big problem with this site was the thousands of midges which ate us alive from the first moment we got out of our cars to put our tents up to the last minute. I am still itching with the numerous bites on my arms and legs after nearly a week at home
Also due to the terracing of the site -the electric hook ups and water taps were erected on the top of the banking and whilst we were there someone near our tent slipped and broke his leg badly whilst trying to come back down-accidents happen but could do with the water taps being separate from the electric hook ups.
Because of the Midges wouldn't go back but we realise this is nothing that the owners could have done.
There is a Sainsburys nearby on the outskirts of Whitby which is ideal for getting those important supplies. Lovely scenery around the site

We've just spent 6 nights at Grouse Hill. Overall the site is fantastic - it has stunning views over the moors and the toilet facilities that we used, near the top of the site were great.
The owners couldn't do enough to help either. We ate at the Flask next to the site which was nice enough.
Also went to the Victoria in Robin Hoods Bay which was really nice, as was the Theakstons XB they serve. Kids were welcome everywhere as was the dog.
The playground kept the kids (8 and 10) entertained for ages.
Unfortunately there is a downside and that is midges, there are lots of them, even right at the top of the site where we were. They are worse down where the tents are by the trees. It is a shame because aside from this the site is near perfect

We had a lovely week at Grouse Hill. The owners couldn't have been more helpful and polite.
The toilet blocks are excellent, The bins are emptied everyday.
The play area the the kids is excellent, It also has a lovely view of the moors.
There's a shop which has everything for your everyday needs plus it stocks caravan and camping equipment which is a big help.
Once we were set up we started to explore the local areas, we started at Falling foss which is about 5 miles from grouse hill which is breathtaking. The kids played in the river then we sat and chilled in their tea rooms
We also went to maybeck which is near falling foss and is a great walk for the dogs and walkers.
We loved it that much at grouse hill that we have now become seasonal residents, also 4 of our friends have now become seasonal residents after visiting us and falling in love with grouse hill

Had a lovely week on this site. I always judge a site on the quality of the toilet block/showers and must say these were one of the best. A little cramped when showering, but very clean and no shortage of hot water in showers or the pot washing area.
Nice and quiet the week we stayed and got lucky with the weather. Nice walks around the camp with stunning views.
Never visited the local pubs, so unable to comment, though did have a meal at the Thai in Whitby and can recommend their food.
Overall a great site, good location and totally satisfied
Will be returning next year.

Stayed just for 1 night in a family 5 man tunnel tent. The location for tents is in the lower end of te field. Located within the area is the shower/toilet block and cleaning facilities. These are of a decent standard, clean, tidy with no webs/flies, and appeared to be cleaned regularly. Again, the cleaning facilities are more than adequate, with plenty of basins to use, so no long queues, even at peak times.
The area itself is fairly spacious, with nice lush lawning and, thankfully, appears to be boulder free underfoot where pitching. There are no issues with access for your car, but those with difficulties walking, will find it a bit of a traipse getting to the shop/reception on foot.
My only negative for the area was the amount of midge flies. We arrived at 6pm, and there where loads of them, which made it difficult to erect our tent, so take plenty of spray if your heading there soon. I assume this hasn't been helped by the rains we've had, nor the river running nearby. By 10am the next morning they had gone, thank god.
We paid £20 plus you pay a £20 deposit for the key to the shower block and a card to let you come and go from the site. Oh, and finally, the service was not the fastest. Had to wait twenty minutes just to hand back my key and card!

My wife & I (both 65++) visited this site for 1 night as the last stop on a 3 week tour. The owners could not have been more pleasant or helpful.
The hardstanding pitch had a slight list but a single wedge cured that. The views over the moors are stunning.
The toilet/shower block was modern and immaculate. I cannot comment on the play area (we are a little past our 2nd childhood) but washing up & disposal facilities are good if a little cramped.
We visited the local pub - The Flask Inn - and were very impressed by the welcome and service. We did not dine there but people on the next table were very complimentary.
A very peaceful site. We will definitely be returning.

Just spent the bank holiday weekend at Grouse Hill with 4 other families. The campsite owners are really helpful and friendly, and have spent a lot of time landscaping the site, with thoughtful features such as soak aways at the bottom of each hill to minimise flooding of the flat pitches.
The toilet facilities were very clean and were regularly monitored, but with key entry and only one key per family we had some interesting 'who's got the key?' conversations as everyone rummaged round their pockets. Some of the other sites we have stayed at had keypad entry which is easier, although the site is so far off the beaten track I'm not sure who would be likely to abuse the toilets. Shower pressure is adequate (not enough for some of our female friends to wash their thick hair) and our hand dryer was a hand warmer at best.
The two main things to be aware of are the midges and also the tap placement. Our group were eaten alive over the 4 days, with several people having bad reactions to the bites and requiring first aid treatment, and others counting over 200 bites. I have only experienced this level of midge nuisance in Scotland and would certainly consider visiting at a different time of year to avoid them, although some permanent residents said they can be a year round issue. We went to a nearby pharmacy and spent a decent amount on high powered insect repellent, which did help a bit.
The tap placement is on the back of the hook up points, which are at the top of the slopes for the touring caravans and tents. With no concrete run off or drains any spillages can make the ground slippery (especially after a downpour)and one poor chap slipped down the hill, fell and broke his leg whilst trying to fill his water container. I know it was an accident but could be avoided with better placement of the taps and some drainage.
In terms of local attractions we went running from the site, went on a 6 mile walk to Falling Foss, May Beck and Littlebeck (very muddy and needed some acrobatics in places)surfed at Upgang beach between Whitby and Sandsend, and for shopping there is a new Sainsbury's on the way into Whitby on the A171.
All in all, a good site and friendly owners, a few little improvements could be made in the facilities, but the midges could be off-putting!

We visited this site for 4 nights over the Jubilee weekend.
First impressions were very good, lovely moor views and quite spacious plots.
Toilet blocks are very modern and nice.
£20 deposit required for toilet and barrier key, this could have been explained more in the overall price as some confusion was caused.
This is a very nice site although we had quite good weather (no rain) so didn't have any problems with drainage.
Couple of negatives:
It was a very busy time when we stayed and we found the toilet and shower blocks could have been kept cleaner. They were only clean for a couple of hours a day.
The showers are very small and could do with an extra area to change in. There was also only a small barrier stopping the water from the shower getting to your towels/clothes which didn't work.
One more thing we had a problem with was the noise from the seasonal sited residents. As it was the Jubliee weekend we expected parties but we were next to a caravan that partied every night, luckily we had taken our ear plugs.
We also had a problem with visitors vehicles to the caravans that were sited. At one point we only had inches from the side of our caravan to a visitors car. For a couple of days there were 4 cars to one caravan which felt a little claustophobic.
I did also find the site rather expensive for having no entertainment facilities but we like our peace and quiet.
None of these problems spoilt our stay though and we would visit again during quiter periods.
