Been coming to this site for 28 years stayed on all season. Great site very clean fantastic views & walks from the site. Great walk to a place called beck hole nice pub.
Owners keep the site very clean and tidy and are very friendly and helpful met a lot of people on the site who were all very friendly. If wanting a meal head for the falcon inn about 2 miles down the road great food. Best site we have stayed on will see you again next year

We have had a seasonal pitch on this site for the last seven years and we intend to stay here for another seven if possible. It is in a fantastic location, near Robin Hoods Bay with stunning views over the moors.

It is managed by a family group who make this a home from home, always willing to help if required but not regimental, like some I could name. There is a well stocked shop, three clean

Toilet/shower blocks with waste disposal facility etc. The site is steeply sloped, but a programme of continuous improvement over the last few years made access, drainage, and pitch levels a lot better.

This years weather has been a challenge for everyone, and very good for midges, as other reviewers have mentioned, but they will not stop me and my family from returning next year.

We revisited grouse hill Again after first trying Cornwall but everywhere was water logged so we made our way back to Yorkshire as we kind of guessed grouse hill with its terraces would have dry pitches. And indeed it did.

The owners still warned you of the amount of rain they had received and the amount they were likely to get.

They even stated they would not pitch a tent if it was them.

They even showed us where the dry spots were.

We spent from Sunday 17th until the bank holiday there.

It rained everyday but we had no problem with mud or water.

There was a sign put up stating the site was full and so if people did pitch, it was their choice and the rain and weather and conditions were obvious to those that did pitch. The only way to avoid rain anywhere that week was to go abroad.

The weather was not cold and as we had a dry pitch at the top of the site we really enjoyed ourselves.

As for the person complaining about cars most people at the top of the site had to drive down to the toilet block (the upper toilet was under going some repairs but opened as soon as these were done in time for the bank holiday campers). Some people who camp are disabled and if you choose to pitch right next door to the toilet block your bound to hear cars and people .

The site had plenty of space and better pitches left anyway.

I did notice some people parked near the gate but I suppose that was to avoid the walk up in the rain. I can not see how this affected anyone.

The owners were very honest about the site and its condition and done a really good job of keeping things going smoothly. They were very helpful.

As for the bins these are frequently emptied and may not be as full if some people did not use the bins as a general dumping ground for anything (camping items such as chairs and windbreaks)they decided they did not need,

The main rubbish skip is well away from anyone camping unless you decided you wanted to camp by it which once gain is your choice, I do not see the skip being any problem to anyone.

We used the shop more this time and found out that some prices were cheaper than some supermarkets. If you go to grouse hill try the sausage and bacon they sell. Its excellent and so is the price.

This site proved it self to be usable and enjoyable even in the worst weather summer could throw at it.

Plus its the ideal location for visits to the surrounding area. My son would have stayed for ever.

Once again I thank the owners of grouse hill for what was a very good week of camping and also for there help.

First of all the positives. Went Bank Holiday weekend and rung around lots of sites a few weeks before to book, this was the only site that accepted bookings. Weather was awful and had been all week, the owner was turning people away on the phone for their own safety (turning business away for them). She warned us that the site was very muddy and wet etc but we made the decision to stay. The lady owner was very nice and helpful, tried to direct us to the best possible spot, also allowed to only pay for one night in case we wanted to leave early.
The toilets were great - always clean despite the muddy wet conditions, showers very warm. Washing up area inside (first for us!) lots of hot water, excellent. Small play area which our boys used only for an hour on Sunday morning (reasons why later). Pub on the entrance of the site, we didn't eat but it looked great. Only few minutes from Robins Hood Bay and a bit longer to Whitby, excellent! Negatives.
The taps only stayed on whilst your hand was on the tap. No marked pitches, which we are not used to, two tents came very close to our two tents despite their being lots of room. Lot of area is sloped which you don't really get from the photo on the website and worst of all, midges. They are a nightmare. Site is surrounded by a forest (very beautiful) but when the weather is warm and wet the midges attack. And they really are bad, they stopped our two 13 year old playing out, opting to go to bed at 8PM (unheard of). They got everywhere, in your food, tent, bed and we were all covered in bites. This would definitely stop us from going again, they really were that bad. Such a shame as the owners were unable to do anything about it and such a great site.

We found this site quite by accident, we had turned up to another local site who wanted a fortune for a crowded bog. What a find this was, the site is well laid out with very clean and adequate toilets. We were there bank holiday and it was muddy, just like everywhere, but still the toilets and even the floor stayed clean, plenty of very hot water and all free. The site fees are very reasonable and the owners friendly, the shop seemed to have pretty much everything and good for bits of camping kit etc. It was very wet and there was standing water, but, they had stopped taking bookings due to this and we decided to pitch anyway! Now, the midges! not sure if it was the weather but they did stock plenty of repellent in the shop so it may be a long standing problem. They will drive you mad! People were wrapped in hoods and coats, I went inside! Overall though a great site.

Ok first review, hope this can be of help to some.

Spent a very wet time here at Grouse Hill, the owners cannot do anything about that, the ground was waterlogged and it was a filthy experience. When the sun cam out I have to say I was attacked by midgies like it has been stated before there were thousands of them, we were all in the same boat when it was raining but after the rain stopped you could just see people flapping arms around all over the place, im almost glad it rained, I could not imagine what it would have been like in nice sunny weather.

Also it was noisy, I mean who really needs to drive to the toilet block, the gravel roads made a right noise when a car rolled passed you, cars were coming back to vans at 12Am that to me is silly, also what seemed to be happening was cars were parked up in the park down by the entrance inside the barrier, the occupants were spending the night in the pub then driving back to their caravan, hence the 12am return.

Although the toilets were clean and warm the midgies again were strewn all over the ceiling where they had died, not very pleasant, it would not take too much to try and clean these off.

Im feeling really tight giving this review but I will not be going back, the area is fantastic robin hoods bay whitby scarborough etc, this sight just did not come upto scratch.

Also its placed on what can only be described as a side of a valley the pitched for caravans seem to be fairly flat but for tents without electric its a little uneven.

I hope this helps, the owners were really nice but at £17 a night at least the noise levels need to change, there really should be not cars moving around at that time.

We visited here the 2nd week in August, only because we could get in at short notice. I think I now know the reason why; this site is decidedly average, and won't be one we'll be going back to. Other reviewers have mentioned some of the 'minuses' - midges, open dustbins, poor drainage etc. If you are considering this site DON'T under-estimate the midges, they were a real nuisance (I have hundreds of red dots all over my arms, legs and face caused by these little buggers - I look like a walking join-the-dots book!) I had read previous reviews, and went prepared (so I thought) with Mosquito coils, Jungle Formula and Nikwax's SkitoStop - NONE of it worked! We weren't pitched under the trees either - we were several terraces back up the site. You have been warned.

It rained everyday we were there, and obviously water flows downhill. This meant that as the land drained, the next terrace below received the water, and so on. We were constantly paddling about in rainwater - and as I have said, we weren't on the lowest levels - I don't know how some of the tents on these lower terraces managed at all.

The dustbins near our plot didn't have lids, which gave a pretty dismal impression, although these were emptied everyday - straight into a large skip at the bottom of the site (visible from just about everywhere) and this had bags of rubbish, litter and bits of old/damaged camping equipment left lying about in front of it. Poor show by the owners - a simple screen would solve this.

The shower/toilet block didn't have too much to recommend either - press down taps which had to be constantly held down, one soap dispenser for 5 sinks, ditto one hand dryer. The showers were free, but again push button. The first one I tried ran for a whole 9 seconds (I timed it), and although there were coat hooks in the cubicles there were no chairs or duckboards so the floors were always wet (and dirty).

Entry to the shower/toilet block was by key (refundable deposit of £12 required, with £2 for additional keys), but the automatic door closer didn't work, so the more unruly youngsters were able to come and go as they pleased, I had to speak to several about messing about in there.

The only really positive note I can add is that the surrounding moors give a stunning scenic backdrop to the site, and the nearby Flask Inn serves honest food, at a mostly reasonable price.

Well arrived there and spent 3 nights under canvas. The camp site is quite large and has a mixture of motor homes, caravans and tents of various shapes and sizes. And the site goes in stages or stepped tiers. The lowest being the area for the tents. There are three blocks each consisting of male and female showers/toilets,washing up area. There is a little park area with swings, tyre chains and various climbing logs and is enclosed with a fence with soft ground in case the little-ones fall. There is also a pond/lake but I never went to it so I cannot comment on this. The site owners are pleasant, friendly and helpful. There is also a small shop on the site and a laundrette. The local areas around grouse hill are Whitby,Scarborough, Robin Hoods bay, Goathland and a few other villages.

Now I have to say the bad points, the campsite is nearly encircled by a pine forest and I don't know if that is the cause but the midges come out in there thousands and nothing and I mean nothing will stop them form attacking you and getting in your food, clothes, bedding, showers, toilets.

There was also a swarm of flying ants but these preferred to land on tent instead of me and kids but there was still too many for a enjoyable holiday.

The bottom tier where the tents are pitched if it rains gets waterlogged and if you are there a few days makes it muddy.

The showers are free but there is times when there is no hot water. Its not on all the time as I was told by owner that's its on a timer so had to wait a few hours for showers at times. People have to find out and make there own minds up so I hope this helps. I already knew about the midges but had to go and be stupid and find out for myself

Just to update my review as my brain had a day off

I meant to say they have an AA 3 pennant rating which means they offer 1st class facilities for caravans-tents-and mobile homes.

Which means the electric hook ups and gas exchange (gaz/calor)

They also offer winter storage and have 24 hr cctv surveillance on site.

I forgot to add that they have large grassed areas where football or cricket and other ball games can be played and room to fly kites.

They also charge batteries on site too.

Locally the area grouse hill is in is known as paradise.

This site has a good range of facilities (pretty clean loo block, shop, playarea). Helpfully, water and electric were available from the same point close to pitches although no distinct arrangement is made for the disposal of waste water. (There are grids and a chem emptying point). Good arrangements are made for rubbish, the site being practically litter free although the communal dustbins lacks lids which could be an issue. The site isn't flat and I agree that the aerial view does seem to suggest otherwise although our pitch was level. The site is very secure and well located on the main Whitby-Scarborough road enabling easy access to attractions in the area.

We spent a week at the site during the 'Whitby Regatta' weekend. The site did get very busy during the weekend, the lack of clearly demarcated pitches meant some tents/caravans were pitched quite together. This did sometimes appear bizarre since some pitches were clearly vacant whilst others (like us) were unnecessarily squashed. I do like the 'find a pitch and tell us where you are' approach, shame it isn't used here. However, during the week the site was pretty quiet although the lack of distinct pitches meant you did feel like your space was being invaded on occasion.

The relatively close proximity to other pitches meant the site could get quite noisy during evenings. The midges reported in other reviews was only an issue for us during the last two days of our stay, although we were glad to leave.
