Good site on the whole, friendly reception from owners, plenty of room, clean facilities with plenty of hot water and excellent location for visiting the local area.

Only a couple of criticisms, many other sites have a time e.G 10 or 11pm when noise should cease, we were not advised of one, so assume they don't have one, but lay awake until after 1am on the first night whilst numerous parties in tents/caravans around us were very loud - quite annoying. Also no hairdryers in the facilities block, nor sockets to use your own. It is midge city as mentioned by others, so take plenty of spray! But apart from that, had an excellent weekend. Lots to do and see in the local area, Boat hire at Ruswarp is good fun and Danby Forest is well worth a visit, it has bike trails, walks, play areas and a lovely little farmhouse tea garden.

We ended up here in the early evening on a Saturday, after being turned away by everywhere in Robin Hood's Bay (all full). It was so foggy we didn't see the beautiful surroundings until the next morning. The tent field is next to some woods (as previous reviewers have mentioned, there were lots of midges!) and there are lovely views of the moors.

The toilet block was pretty clean, and convenient for the whole field. There is a little shop on site but we didn't use it.

The pub just off the main road, a ten minute walk from the bottom end of the site, is big BUT when we were there they stopped serving food at 8:20pm - the site owners had told us 8:45. We were gutted to miss out, especially since we found it hard to get any food after 9 in Whitby, which is an 8-mile drive away.

The site was quiet, good value and very pleasant. Not just a backup in case the Robin Hood's Bay sites are all full, but a nice, moory place to be in its own right.

Very friendly, clean, tidy site, just off a main road central for touring. The showers always had hot running water and so did the washing up room, toilets and showers cleaned daily, the site shop is well stocked with a good assortment of items, ice blocks frozen for 10p each. The only fault were the midges because it is close to a wood and lake. The children's playarea excellent.

This was our first real camping trip with our children so didn't know what to expect.

After reading the reviews we decided on grouse hill as it was very close to where we wanted to be (8 miles from whitby and 12 miles from Scarborough).

On arrival we thought the site looked wonderful with some breathtaking views and a well presented reception.

After paying our fees for our stay we were able to drive down to the camping area and choose our own pitch, this was very advantageous as you don't want to walk to far in the dark if you need the loo at night, so we chose to be close to the shower/toilet block,

They were very clean and well presented too.

you were given a key which opened the always locked facilities and a swipe card for the barrier at the entrance to the site this again was a very good idea.

We were going to stay for 3 nights but decided on 2 as we had seen the weather forecast so decided to pack up early, this did not create any problem for the site owners.

An excellent camp site for both caravans and tents, I WILL be going back!

Excellent facilities at this site in a fabulous location.

We booked late last week for a 2 night weekend break at beginning of school holidays!

We were very lucky with the weather despite a very wet previous few days. The site owners were very helpful in suggesting a dry pitch. The site is on a slope but the way it has been landscaped provides very good pitches with or without services.

Our only reservation about going back is the noisy young people who partied into the early hours of the morning and then became very argumentative when challenged by other campers and eventually the site owners. I do feel the site owners could have intervened earlier and prevented the disruption to the whole campsite.

We arrived pretty late after our original choice of campsite was full, but the owners were great and made us feel very welcome.

There was a lot of space on the bottom camping field with the caravans tiered above. I was glad not to be cramped up near other people!

The campsite was very clean, toilets were spotless and there was some very hot water! There was no rubbish anywhere to be seen so it was a good start!

The first evening was fine. The campsite was pretty quiet which was a relief. Meant we could sleep easily.

Sadly on the second day it rained and then out came the midges (I see other shared this experience here). We got out of the car (parked next to the tent) and my OH was covered in midges, like a silver coating on his black top. I've never seen to many land on someone in my life! They were everywhere. The communal areas of my tent were full of them, we must have killed thousands that night. We ended up sneaking quickly out of a small opening in the tent to the toilet block once we had killed the bulk of them in the tent. Meant it was a slightly more unpleasant evening shut up in the tent unable to open any doors. They were biters as well, so we had a lot of red dots by the end of the evening!

I noticed other campers having the same problem, one other on site resorted to lighting a fire in the tent entrance and fanning their tent full of smoke!

It was a real shame as otherwise the campsite was lovely and very clean.

The location was good for Whitby, Robins Hood Bay and Scarborough and although it is on the moors, the local pub at the campsite entrance looked very nice (although we did not go on). There was a well stocked shop on site and a small kids play area.

If there was a no midge guarantee, I would definitely go back, but with the scale of the midge problem I'm afraid it would be a no (and that is no fault of the owners).

We visited this site as our first outing in our new trailer tent & the site did everything we expected and made us very happy. The toilet blocks were clean at all times & even though it was bank holiday weekend it was never too crowded even though we were adjacent to the tent field. Water was always hot & the washing up area (inside) was well planned.

We had an electric hook up which was close to the pitch and had it's own tap.

The ground was wet when we arrived on Saturday but by Sunday it was dry again. Later in the week it rained overnight but by the next afternoon the ground was dry again. It was windy when we were there but the site seemed fairly sheltered.

Very well stocked shop for camping bits and other essentials and plenty of local information around reception. Shop is even child friendly - our 7year old daughter loved this. No site cafe but pub (Flask Inn) & cafe at site entrance & a fish & chip van visits regularly although we did not use any of theses as we were out most of the time. Park on site is not great but ok as a distraction.

Closest resort of Robin Hoods Bay is ideal for rock pooling and general family ice cream fun. Parking at most local towns was about £5 for 24hrs, £4 for 4hours. Whitby is always a good destination for all ages & tastes. Don't be put off by the queue at the Magpie Restaurant - it's worth every minute and makes the £10.95 haddock and chips taste even better.

Good local pub is the Flag Inn about 3 miles south on A171. The meal was excellent, about £9 for main course, half price/portions for kids. It did get busy and by 7pm had a 30 minute wait for food.

When weather turned bad we went to the village of Ruswarp which has a miniature steam railway, rowing boats on the river, indoor kids play area suitable for 1-12year olds, crazy golf & pitch & putt.

Overall - great site, friendly owners, not much within walking distance, but a good location for visiting the area. Only criticism is the park - but you'll never get that right for our family with kids at 2 & 7. We will be going back.

We were able to phone this site on Saturday of a bank holiday weekend and turn up the same day. Toilet / Shower block was clean at all times slight moan would be the showers were too hot for our two little ones.
The site was pretty full but it was a bank holiday weekend. The pitch was a little bit wet but it had rained a lot earlier in the week so probably to be expected.
The site is well positioned for exploring the North Yorks coast and had all required facilities on site shop, gas exchange etc. There is a walk through the adjacent woods to a lake! All in all not a bad site.

First visited site for a weekend 25 yrs ago, with 2young kids. Went more + more as years went on. Kids now grown up + married, we take our caravan on for the season now, using it every weekend. Also have hols here as well. Fabulous walks on moors as well as to coast (Robin Hoods bay, Ravenscar) Clean + tidy site, good toilet blocks, washing up facilities, friendly family owners.

Yes ,like anywhere else if conditions are right there will be midges but use repellant + citronella candles, they have yet to stop me from barbequeing!

2nd time we have visited this site, and unfortunately both times it has chucked it down persistently. Obviously you can not hold the owners responsible for this.

Overall the facilities are very good / clean and the setting is ideal for visiting either Scarborough or Whitby and everything else in between. Having visited before I was aware of the midge problem and invested in some Avon products which are apparently used by the army in Scotland to ward the little pests off. Didn't work, although we did pitch down near the bottom of the site (due to the other available bits resembling swimming pools) so were quite close to the trees and skip, despite a warning from the owners.

All in all this would be an A1 site if you catch some decent weather and can avoid the midges, sadly after 2 visits I haven't managed it yet but who knows, maybe 3rd time lucky?
