Just returned from long weekend at this site. Warm welcome from owners and very helpful as we had other people joining us on different days started off as 2 ended up as 14.
This is a lovely site with good clean facilities, although it would be nice to have mop and bucket in the showers so you do not have to shower in other peoples mess {grass, hair etc}. Shop covers all your basic needs and fish and chip van was most welcoming on the Friday/Saturday nights.
Grandkids loved the playground and the walk through the woods and around the pond.
Midges were a bit of a problem so just make sure you take candles and spray, not much the owners can do about the pesky things.
Site well situated for Whitby,Scatborough and Robin Hood's Bay. Plenty of walks near by, even cycle hire a short distance away.
The only downside was noise every evening from a small number of campers spoiling it for the rest of us,1 night going on until 5.30am. Mentioned it to the owners who was helpful but cannot be expected to patrol the site all night.
We would certainly recommend this site and will return ourselves as soon as we can. Thank you for a very enjoyable stay.

Just got back from a 3 night stay and what a beautiful site, in a lovely location for visiting surrounding areas.
The site owners showed us in which area to camp and then left us alone to enjoy our holiday.
The campsite is very clean and well maintained with plenty of toilets, showers and lovely hot water, There is also a electric socket in toilets to use your hairdryer etc
Having read reviews on this site about the midges we were in doubt about going but thought we would give it a try, at the end of the day you have to remember you are in the north Yorkshire moors and you can also get midges in your own garden at night. We took citronella candles and had a bbq every night which probably kept them at bay.
A CAMPSITE DEFINITELY WORTH VISITING

Just wanted to say what a wonderful site this is. We are so glad we booked for our only 2 week holiday of the year. The site is perfect, we arrived to a warm welcome and were shown to a lovely clean pitch with combined water and electric stand point. (fab!)
The toilets/showers were clean and warm with gallons of hot water loads, of room and pegs to hang your clothes and towel.Laundry has top loader washing machines with huge drums so perfect for families who are staying a while as all the clothes will be done in one wash. £2 a wash its a bargin.
Site shop is really well stocked and cheap, staff were a delight and always gave a smile and a wave. The bins are emptied on a reg basis so no rubbish over spill !The views are spectacular we fell in love as soon as we drove onto the site. We didn't have any real probs with midges just a quick squirt of raid and they stayed away.
We had no probs with noise or cars as I have read in other reviews just normal camp site noise which is actually quite nice.
The Flask inn which is just outside the gate was really cosy and made our little dog very welcome, family room was available and play park, but it was nice to be able to sit and have a drink in delightful pub just 10 min walk from our tent.
There is also a petrol station right next to the flask inn. Also can I rec the Falcon inn 2 miles from grouse hill picture perfect pub great place to take your dog as they have a big field with benches in it, sit back and let the dog walk itself.Whitby and scarborough all a short drive away, this is a beautiful area to visit we had one of the best holidays ever this year.
We arrived home rested and relaxed after having a stress free stay at Grouse hill, this family run site is the perfect place to stay weather it be for a night or a fortnight.Plus dogs are welcome. We will def be back for another holiday.

The location of this campsite is almost perfect, very quiet and lovely countryside. However, we felt that it was let down by the daft system for accessing all the toilet and utility facilities. We paid a £10 deposit for a key to access a toilet block that was the other side of the site from our tent. We were not allowed to have a key for the nearest block(s), one of which was closed permanently.
We were a party of 6, with 4 children, it was very hard work trotting to and fro to the loo with them as we didn't want to trust the youngest two with a key, one of them couldn't reach the lock even. Fortunately the washup's lock was broken, as I would have found trying to open doors and carry washing up in a struggle.
The top tent field is also very sloping, we would have preferred a spot on the bottom field, nearer the other loos, but it was full, despite us having booked.
In my opinion, the top field, with no loo was not really suitable for camping. We also came home with a tick embedded in my son's tummy. There should have been some information on site as to what to do with these and how to avoid bites as I had no idea that The N. York Moors is a hotspot for ticks which carry Lyme disease.

We booked this campsite at the last minute after ringing around this area and finding all the campsites booked, I was surprised when the owner said yes just come along. The campsite was very clean and well maintained, plenty of toilets, showers and washing up area. We also had 2 good nights sleep. The only thing was having to pay £20.00 deposit for a key into toilets etc - a keypad would be a lot better, if we both wanted the toilet or shower one of us had to let the other one in first. Also the midges were a pain. We paid £20.00 a night which was for 2 adults & 2 children & your tent, but as we were just a couple you didn't get a discount which I thought was unfair

We phoned, booked for 3 nts & arrived the same day without any hassle and to a very warm welcome from the hard-working family owners.
Everything was very well kept, clean, tidy and having the water supply together with every electricity point was a great plus. The shower / toilet / wash-up block nearest us was kept very clean and despite having only 3 push-button showers in the ladies, I never saw a queue and the water was always a perfect temperature -lovely!
The kids play area on the edge of the forest was great and easily viewed from our location (flat tiered pitches and all south facing). We hardly saw our 7yr old son as he soon made friends & was off building dens and playing in the woods.
The scenery and views are wonderful-the moors all around so a walkers delight and only a short car ride to either Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay or Scarborough for sightseeing etc.
On-site there's also a little site shop with grocery basics and a good selection of camping equipment, coin-op laundry and family bathroom.
The 'Flockton Fryer' Fish 'n Chip van calls at 8pm on Saturday night. (Lovely fish with crispy batter and well worth £5 just for safely negotiating the speed bumps to get here!)
It was very peaceful in our area on an evening, no rowdies! but to other reviewers who had a few problems, there are 'No noise after 10.30pm' signs at the facilities block but they are faded by the sun so almost illegible. We felt so lucky to have dropped on Grouse Hill by chance and stayed an extra night since the weather was fab- will definitely return again soon.
Only other points to mention / comment are that the facilities are locked and the site is on a hillside so you always have to remember your key-can be a bit inconvenient if someone is in the shower and you need the loo in a hurry! -personally prefer a 'code' lock system but that's just me! Also mega noisy sink taps, must be air trapped in them or something?!
Due to hillside, would need to mention if you have walking difficulties / disabled as there's steps to negotiate but I'm sure the owners will accommodate you accordingly if mentioned on booking.
The site had a static caravan to rent and is getting 'Pods' for 2011. The Flask Inn, on the side of the A171 Whitby-Scarborough road is at the entrance to the site.
Handy spot for a pint and caters for families but food could be better (our steak & kidney pie had been 'microwaved to death' hence we didn't go back but the grilled stuff looked better).

Just returned home from a weekend at this lovely site. Directed to here from campsite we had planned to stay at but was full on arrival. Grouse Hill is clean, with adequate shower and washing facilities; staff were friendly and helpful.
Position of site was great for travelling to Whitby and the moors; the views whilst cooking breakfast are breathtaking. The pub down the road was also friendly, particularly to the dog! and the food was good.
Only criticism was surrounding campers not complying with curfew; music and loud noise but maybe I'm just getting old!
Will definitely go back

Stayed here for 3 nights during may day bank holiday, nice clean site with great views of the north York moors. Handy having water and electrics together, shop sell everything you need.
I had a problem with my pitch which had just been airiated and there were divots and rather large holes where my tent would be, I complained to the owner and he was ok and moved us to another pitch which was a lot better.
Would use again as the area is great, RHB, Whitby, Ravenscar, Goathland all near

We booked this site at the last minute after reading the the reviews and must admit it was every bit as good as the reviews. The owners were very pleasant and helpful. We had three dogs with us, no problem and there was plenty of room to exercise. There were three toilet and shower blocks which were always clean and tidy with as much hot water as you needed with washing up facilities, again as much hot water as needed.
Each hook up point had its own water tap which we found very useful, There was plenty of room although the tents could be a bit close but not overly so and the whole site was spotless. The shop wasn't overly stocked but most of the essentials.
The local pub right opposite the entrance to the site served excellent food with good beer to wash it down it also had a family room for those with children. The local attractions were easy to get to and there is probably something for everyone. We will definitely be returning and would recommend this site.

We love this site and as we came across it quite by accident we thought ourselves really lucky. We spent 3 nights there and at only £16 per night for 5 of us we were really quite happy about that.
The midges were the only downside which the owners obviously can't do anything about, although they tried by stocking insect repellants including Avon's Skin So Soft which is quite good at keeping away the little buggers.
Anyway, everything else was just perfect for us. The site is on a hill but is tiered so it is quite easy to find a flattish spot to camp. We were quite high up and the views were lovely. The showers are free & not too hot for our children, just right we thought. Yes, the taps on the sinks don't stay on when you take your hand off them but all you have to do to remedy this is to put the plug in and let the sink fill up a bit - it's as easy as that. The toilet and shower blocks were lovely, clean and warm all of the time too which I think was because you had to go through 2 doors to get in which was great coz there's nothing worse than being cold when you are getting dried after a shower. And the washing up area always had hot water and is inside - YAY!
The kids loved running around the site and playing games with the other kids and the play area they loved too with the tyre swing in the trees a bonus.
All in all, a lovely site, very clean and pleasant with friendly, helpful owners to go with it.
Definitely will be returning.
