This site wasn't our 1st choice as we had set out to camp at Manor Farm up the road but by the looks of things it has been closed for a while. Lesson learnt phone campsite before hand!
Anyway drove back down the road & found Grouse hill & wasn't disappointed, we like our back to basic campsite so was a bit wary when we pulled up to the barrier expecting some big entertainment campsite with 8ft cuddly character. But no its not like that thank god!
Pulled up outside the owners house & she came out to great us with a warm friendly smile took £20 deposit for the toilet key/barrier exit card & £30 for 2 nights which I think is fab for 2 adults & 2 teenagers! she was very helpful in letting us now they had rain for the whole week previous & that the lower tier was a bit muddy & water logged, . & too set up where we liked, . It was great as we where the only campers, . 'proper campers as in tents';), . Plenty of tourers on the top tiers of the site.
The toilet block is clean & warm. As I said before we are basic campers so not used to such luxury!
Cant comment on the shop or any other amenities as we did'nt use them.
My teenage boys where impressed with the park & their was always other kids playing so that gets a tick.
Some nice walks next to the site including the woods, didn't go as far as the lake as someone had mentioned in previous posts. Didn't realise their was one, . That's for another visit.
Did'nt have any problems with midgies, but it was pretty cold & wet, . But glad of the warning from other reviewers for this site.
No noise from other campers. Nice & quiet.
We visited The Flask inn on the Saturday night, think they are refurbishing it as there was only one room being used, but it was quiet so plenty of room, very friendly land/bar lady, gave the boys a pack of cards to play with, locals seemed friendly, did'nt eat so cant comment on food, . But a bit disappointed on their choice of ales, . Would have expected some local brewed, . Not even Blacksheep!
Will be visiting Grouse Hill again :)

We arrived at the campsite around 8. 00pm having previously booked and paid a deposit. On arriving at the pitch we had been pointed in the direction of, there was a 'choice' of two to pick from. Both were seriously boggy, the hardstanding was poor and it was quite a way from the toilet block. The site does have more than one but they hadn't all been opened up (a key was needed for entry). We chose one, due to the lateness and having paid the full amount for a three night stay on checking in we had to stay. I must say in terms of pitch, this is the worse site we have stayed on, our steps sunk into the mud, and much levelling of the caravan was required even though it was supposed to be a hard standing.
The toilets were very clean to but get to them you had to navigate your way down two levels and two flights of steps, these steps were not easy to spot in the dark as they were in between pitches. The pitches closest to the toilets were fully serviced, ours for £28 per night was poor in comparison.
The children's play area was a long way from where we were pitched and not especially exciting.

Just returned from a week here. The site is well placed for the North Yorkshire Coast and we used it as a base for Whitby, Scarborough, Robin Hoods Bay and Runswick.
The site is spacious with lovely scenery although our stay was marred a little by lots of muddy ground. In retrospect I wish we'd sited a bit higher up the site - we were behind the Yurts.
The facilities were clean and not busy. The shower rooms were on the small side though.
My children said the play area wasn't up to much - but I never saw where it was so can only take their word for it.
We ate twice at the Flask Inn which is 5 minutes walk and enjoyed the food both times.
All in all a reasonable site with very reasonable prices but there is a drainage issue in April wintery weather!

We are regular visitors to Grouse Hill as we just love this quiet, well run, family friendly site. No commercialism or 'diversions' for your hard earned dosh! Great local walks/bike rides & south facing pitches with stunning views over the moors. Midges can be a problem on the lower pitches at certain times. 2012 update -the pub opposite the site entrance, The Flask Inn now has new management & a new chef with wonderful food! A definite enhancement to any stay at Grouse Hill. (Last year the pub/food left a lot to be desired so you had to be well prepared with your own provisions ) There's also a few more new wigwams available with lovely decking to sit out.

We visited this site when we had a blast of sun in September a few weeks ago.
We were worried that the rest of the UK would have had the same idea as us but we had loads of space at our disposal and this doesn't seem to be the type of site that ever gets cramped. Pitches are flat and well kept. Our large tent was not a problem where other sites had rejected us.
The site is lovely and is surrounded by woods and moors. The facilities were always spotless and are plentiful. I rarely met more than one person in the toilet/shower block.
There is a shop, but it isn't staffed all day long and the garage near the site shut at 5pm so you do have to be a bit more prepared than perhaps you would with an on site shop that is open all day. This isn't a problem so long as you know as there are enough places around to shop for what you need.
This site is excellently placed between Scarborough and Whitby and we spent a day at both places. Robin Hoods Bay is worth a visit too. Also good to know - we got fish and chips from the Magpie cafe and drove back to the site with them and they were still hot!
Owners were lovely, always happy to chat, and kindly opened the shop for us out of hours to grab a few things. Dog is daft as a brush too
I'd recommend the Falcon Inn for something to eat - it's just a few miles down the road. We were able to tether our dogs in the garden and eat in the restaurant with them in full view.
We'll definitely go back to this site. It's lovely and peaceful, very well maintained, and in a great location.

Had a lovely 3 night's stay here. As we were expecting family to join us the next day we were directed to pitch at the bottom of the field where there were two pitches together. There had been a lot of rain but the pitch wasn't too muddy.
The field is terraced with 3 toilet blocks that were pleasantly clean and tidy throughout our stay. There is a shop stocking necessities but I did think it was rather expensive.
The downfall of being at the bottom of the field near the woods (although not the fault of the site) was the midges! Swarms of the little blighters with fangs! They ignored all our attempts at getting rid of them by burning citronella candles and midge coils. We were even advised to use Avon Skin So Soft lotion to no avail. The owner said he had never known them be so bad. We stayed inside the tent all 3 evenings but this didn't spoil our enjoyment.
There are some lovely walks around the site including one which brings you to a secluded lake with an island. We spent a few minutes watching the widlife and taking in the views of the moors.
The pub was a short walk and had a family room where food was served until 8. 15pm and a children's outdoor play area. The food was of a high standard.
I will go back to this site again but would choose a pitch at the top of the hill where the views were beautiful and there were fewer midges.

We arrived to the site in particularly wet weather and were greeted of sorts by a lady who insisted we had to pay before we went any further. Perplexed as we had just stepped out of the car after a long journey and parked outside of reception we were quiet surprised by this reception. We of course paid our balance and were shown to a pitch on the bottom field near the trees. The pitch was far too small for an 8 berth tent and we were unable to put up the canopy as were so close to the next tent, our guy ropes almost reached the next tent and this was hazardous going to the toilet blocks through the night. We were no where near the recommended 3. 5 mtrs away from each tent, any degree of privacy was impossible. The grass needed cutting although was being cut the day we left. The trees attracted the midgies and it was impossible to sit out at night as you would be severely bitten, to be expected on the North Yorkshire Moors but these were a particularly 'evil breed '. On a positive note the toilets/ showers were clean and warm and the utility room was good but not enough positives to return.

Would have enjoyed our stay better if party revellers hadn't kept us and part of the campsite awake till 2 in the morning with loud music.
Midges a real problem my husband and son had bites all over them.
We arrived Sat lunchtime and the site seemed to fill up quickly although wasn't full.
On a positive note, site well kept, shower blocks warm with plenty of hot water.
Small shop on site to get basics. Can freeze ice packs in their freezers, which is handy.
Never saw children's play area I think it was behind the trees at the bottom of the field.
This site is about 7 miles away from Whitby on the coast road. Did enjoy a 2 night stay but wont be returning.

Family of 4, just visited Grouse Hill
Stunning location, quiet and well set back from road, easy travelling distance to Whitby and Boggle Hole.
Good points-
Modern toilet shower blocks, clean, warm and hot water at all times of day and night. Females had 6 toilets (one extra wide with sink) and three showers, work surface near sinks, hand dryer and plug socket available for hairdryer
Quiet site, no clubhouse and 10. 30 noise curfew adhered to by a fairly full campsite
Felt safe and secluded, with exit barrier
Indoor utility room - 7 sinks I think the same set up in each shower/utility block
Family bathroom - beautiful (although extra £3. 50 payable per visit)
Good location for visiting
Pubs previously mentioned - one within easy walking distance
Playground OK
Bad points
Terrible biting midges on lower two terraces, too bad to be ignored or not commented on. Despite a BBQ for smoke, 4 citronella candles and bug spray, we were all bitten badly. Maybe not as bad on top two terraces as there are some long stay customers
Showers are just too small - have two hooks for clothes and nothing else, no seat or shelf and also all floor gets wet so nowhere even remotely dry to get dressed, very difficult and awkward with a child
Smell in ladies bathroom- internal drain problem? Plus the large rubbish bin was overflowing before being emptied
Shop on site doesn't open until 8. 30
Press taps on sinks don't give you enough time/water - ie press tap then try to wash hands together is impossible as water goes off before you can get them wet!
Could be more child friendly in bathrooms - everything too high or hard to press
Most flush handles on toilets need attention
Overall, nice campsite, wouldn't visit again because of midges, and tiny shower rooms.
NB In August request a site away from the midges on the bottom two terraces!

We arrived at the campsite and were initially impressed by the views but this was not to last. After a polite check in we were directed to our pitch which was at the bottom of the steep hill (the pitches are on a series of terraces from top to bottom of the site)
We saw quite a lot of good unused pitches near the top with great views but thought they must be reserved so we pitched up where we had been sent.
A couple of hours later we were overwhelmed by the masses of midges from the surrounding woods, this made it almost impossible to sit out as we were being eaten alive.
We kept an eye on the better pitches at the top of the site and to our amazement they remained unused all weekend, what a waste!
The shower blocks were clean but very basic with no dry change area in the cubicles, ok if you have the frame of a small child. It was impossible to get water from the tap for longer than a couple of seconds as you have push and hold but as soon as you release the water stops!
The bus stops nearby for trips to Whitby, Robin Hoods bay etc(very good bus service) and the Flask pub is handy for food if you fancy a break from cooking as we did, courtesy of the midges.
For £24 PN for two it was a disappointment. If you do use this site ask for an elevated pitch, great views and no midges.
Also make sure you have a long cable for hook up as each point services four pitches which can be quite a distance if you cop for the last pitch
