Just returned from Rosedale abbey after spending 3 nights there over the Jubilee Weekend. We were in a tent without EHU.
We've been to this site several times over the past few years, and although I would love to give the site 10 out of 10, It is sadly let down by the terrible shower/toilet facilities which seem to get worse every time we stay.
Firstly the good points:
Stunning location in a picturesque valley with lovely village, two great pubs which both do food and village shop on doorstep.
The site has a lovely family atmosphere with nice pitches and stream running along one side.
The site shop has been greatly improved with a wide range of stock including fresh milk, bread and BBQ ready food. I'm sure beer, wine and newspapers would surely be a hit!
The staff were very helpful and even hired me some duvets and towels at very reasonable rates.
The playground has been recently improved as it was getting really dated and tired and this proved a big hit with the kids.
The only downside to the site, but probably one of the most important factors were the terrible showers and toilets.
The showers were either red hot or stone cold within the space of a few seconds. There was hardly any pressure to them and I basically gave up on them without getting a proper wash. The flooring in the shower block was lethal(my small son slipped) as there are no rubber mats apart from at the entrance door. The tiles are very slippery and there aren't any places to hang your clothes except for one hook on the back of door.
The toilets were blocked while we were there, the wash hand basins were again poor water supply and the single hair dryer was next to useless. The washing up facilities also suffered from the poor water supply issues.
Overall I feel the shower/toilet blocks are in severe need of some money spending on them as they resemble 1960s quality and not upto modern day standards. Although the staff do their best to try and keep them clean, they can't get away from the fact that they don't actually work very well.
I know it was a busy bank holiday weekend, but that's no excuse. If the site can't handle that many people then either limit the numbers of improve the facilities.
We had persuaded 3 other families to come with us and I know for certain that none of them will return due to the poor showers/toilets. We were only there a weekend so could just about last out, but I wouldn't want to spend any longer there as I like to keep clean!
Its such a shame as this would be the perfect site if the showering issues were addressed. I wouldn't have thought it would cost a fortune to rectify, but until they do, then sadly we won't be returning.

Just spent 3 nights at Rosedale, having been before and always enjoying the area. However this time felt it necessary to comment on the toilet facilities.
The ladies toilets are very dimly lit, there is nowhere in the shower cubicle to put clothes bags etc except one hook on the back of the door. Had to put my bag with towel etc on the floor, which got soaked from the shower. Only three of the showers were actually working. The mens toilets were blocked and unusable for part of the time.
If they want people to return they really need to improve the facilities. Shame because it is a lovely area with two good pubs.

Just returned from 9 nights at this wonderful site in a tent without electric. The site was generally fairly quiet during the week considering it was the school holidays but very busy on a weekend and we were there for the Rosedale show which is very popular. Yes I would agree with some comments about the showers but as the site is situated in the moors we didn't expect too much. When really busy then the showers were not too good, especially if people leave them on which happened a few times, but you soon learn to time your slot for a quieter time after the block has been cleaned.
Overall a fantastic site with a good play area and the river is brilliant. Both myself and my wife went in with our daughter and had a long paddle 'up the river'.
The local pubs are excellent and we would recommend the The New Inn at Cropton. If you go to Whitby or Robin Hoods Bay its well worth going over the moors and not through Pickering as the views etc are lovely. Some great walks from the site too. We will definitely be going back to this site.

Just love this site, we spent a week (2 adults plus one dog) in July and once again, no complaints whatsoever. We visited before the school Summer holidays so it was very quiet despite two school groups arriving who were impeccably behaved. We had acres to ourselves due to it being midweek.
The toilet block was always spotless and always had plenty of hot water whatever time of day. This was our fourth visit and will not be our last. The wardens were lovely and stopped by daily for a chat and kept the site very clean.
There are many walks directly from the campsite and the pub opposite the entrance to the site serves some very good meals. Cheerful Receptionist too.

The campsite is in a lovely location, surrounded by beautiful countryside. We visited for 3 nights with a group of friends. However, we found the campsite/owners to be very regimented, and didn't feel we could relax.
The village shop sells everything you could possibly need, a mobile fish & chip shop stops just outside the site every Friday night & the pub just outside the site entrance, The Coach House Inn, served gorgeous food.
Despite being advertised with 'unallocated pitches' the staff/owners are very particular about where & how you pitch your tent, including the position of your car next to the tent.
The toilet/shower block is poor, despite being warned in other reviews & on site re the water pressure & temperature, we were hopeful but to no avail. It is worth paying the £10 deposit for the family bathroom, we got up at 7am & managed to have a hot shower; this was the only one in 3 days- on other attempts we were met with cold trickling water. On our final day all the toilets & showers in our field were out of use.
There is one washing machine (£2 per load) & tumble dryer (x5 20p per load-these have to be inserted individually in 10 minute intervals); usually I wouldn't bother but 20 hours of rain & 2 year olds don't mix!
Only 2 washing up sinks-not enough.
We wouldn't visit this site again.

Camped here for 2 nights in June - very quiet with it being out of the school holidays. We were not allocated a specific pitch as we did not require electric hook-up - we could just pitch anywere on the first camping field, and as there were only three other tents this wasn't a problem, plenty of room. No problems with the showers as other reviewers have mentioned - water was always hot, no problems with the water pressure, and the facilities were always clean. The pub near the entrance to the site wasn't dog friendly so we drove to the nearby village of Cropton - the pub there allows dogs in, even at meal times, and has its own brewery on site so great for lovers of real ale. The food was excellent there. It was our second visit to this site and I would definitely recommend it.

A gem of a location and away from the road, so peaceful, and great views. Except that the site is so regimented for tourers that you are sure to have a great view of another 'van (or 10). I'm not a fan of regimented sites and usually request a grass pitch with hook up if available, but none to be had here.
The spacing was tight with I guess 5m hardstanding and about 3-4m grass strip. This leaves about 1m spacing either side of your car plus 'unit' if you have an awning up. Not enough in my humble opinion. Fortunately we visited at a quieter time but would not return in the school holidays when they are no doubt rammed in tight.
Good for kids, and most camping is in discrete areas so gives a smaller feel to the whole site. Good for light - medium strength walks at low or high(ish) level, and looks good for cycling across the moors.
A decent pub (serves decent Black Sheep) in the village, and another just far enough up the hill to make you think you've earned your pint.
Plot fees reasonable, with electricity charged separately at what appears to be 20p/unit, whatever a unit consists of. We are seldom wasteful and consumed £2.00 over 2 nights which didn't seem too bad. There was 40p remaining on our meter which was a useful reserve, and an 'emergency credit' button (which I've used in a marina before) in case you run out in the middle of doing the toast!
One major drawback was the request to empty grey water at the Elsan Point. There are no ground level sluices which on querying this we were advised that the sluices at the water points drain into the river. The Elsan Point consists of a basic loo pan.
On advising the cleaning team that I wasn't going to risk 2 recent shoulder operations with accompanying long recuperation times on lifting 40-50kg of Wastemaster in to position, one chap kindly brought a bucket to take the worst of it, and helped me lift the carrier over the loo pan situated in a long thin 'cubicle', too narrow for us to get in easily.
Even with 2 blokes in control, grey water went everywhere making the tiled floor dangerous and no doubt would raise the eyebrows of anyone arriving at the scene to find the turbid waters lying around. It's a major drawback and means realistically, you need to empy your waste 2 times / day to stand a chance.
As I stated at the beginning, with 'Wastemaster' type tanks being the 'industry standard' this is a major shortcoming, especially if you are older or less able-bodied for any reason.
Was not a huge fan of the key-card (£10 deposit) entry for the ablution block as it meant we had to juggle it between us. Or troop off to the loo together like girls in a nightspot! A keycode would make more sense, and potentially cheaper if you had the (careless) kids with you! Cleanliness was beyond criticism however, and the warnings of reduced heat/pressure at busy times did not affect our use of the showers.
Good, helpful staff. Our late(ish) arrival was taken in it's stride and we were met further up the site by a man with a buggy who showed us to the plot and sold us some 'lectric' once he had shown us how much was left on the meter. His suggestion od a couple of quids worth was spot on.
Overall, a stunning location, bit too much of a corporate feel to it for my liking.

Just returned from this lovely peaceful site. We had a lovely time and our son was constantly wet off playing in the stream and on the rope swing.
The site managers were very helpful showing us to pitches and letting us know where everything was.
Our only problem on the site was as previously mentioned in the reviews was the lack of hot water. We arrived on the Thursday and Friday morning we visited the showers about 7am as had to be off the site early and the water was unbearably cold the Saturday we waited until about 1pm before we ran over to the showers and they were slightly warmer but the pressure was so weak it took ages to get the soap out of your hair. The sunday was the same.
This is very unfortunate as it is a lovely site but for the price of a pitch I would like some hot water for a shower.

The campsite is in a lovely village, surrounded by beautiful countryside. We visited for the weekend with a (quiet) group of friends. We found the campsite to be very regimented, and didn't feel we could relax.
There seems to be an issue with cars on the park, and vans with advertising are not allowed to be parked next to your tent, although they can be parked 200 metres away on the hardstanding
The toilet block was always very clean, though the keycard system was terrible. You had to juggle the keycard amongst the family, and invariably the kids would take it off to the park when they'd finished.
Overall, didn't feel that we were welcomed as a group, rather as an inconvenience. Maybe a `no groups' policy would suit the campsite better.

What can I say that hasn't already been said. Just one thing. The showers/hot water were poor, unfortunately we had to complain as each time we either used the showers or used the hot water in the washing up area it was tepid. Others occasionally got a hot shower but occasionally is not good enough.
The Management assured us this was being looked at so following campers please take note. Also not sure about booking an electric hook up pitch and then having to pay extra for my electric.
We used 'Graze on the Green' fabulous little cafe, also pub at the end of the drive, great food and great welcome.
All in all, what a fabulous campsite, an absolute jewel in the Moors crown. Helpful staff, great atmosphere, no phone signal.
The kids had a great time, the dog loved it and I feel so relaxed
