We've just returned from a week's camping at riverside, our first time there after two years. To say that it was just as good as we remembered is an understatement - it was even better.

The site is located in a very handy place for the town of caernarfon, which has supermarkets etc. So the lack of a proper camp shop is not an issue. There is an on-site café, which does good food at not unreasonable prices, and cold drinks and ice lollies can be bought at the adjacent garden centre.

The lack of a local pub within easy walking distance (the road upon which the campsite is situated is not very pedestrian-friendly) might be an issue to some, although as the site was largely populated by families, I doubt that too many were bothered.

Riverside has a decent central play area, which kids of all ages seem to enjoy at different times of day; the younger ones play all day with the teens coming out later on to 'hang out'. I'd avoid pitching too close to the play park for that reason (we did this on our first visit, lesson learned), but there are plenty of (electric) pitches that enjoy a great view of the playground so that parents can keep an eye on the children from their tent from a safe distance. There was plenty of space for bat and ball games too, but this might be reduced at busier times.

What really makes this place family friendly is the river seiont that runs around the site. It is not too deep, but deep enough in parts for a swim and mostly shallow enough for younger paddlers. We even had our kids in a rubber dinghy running the 'rapids' after a day of rain… there are plenty of fish, eels and other creatures to be fished for too. Anyone with children who can be left to play in the river unsupervised will have a really relaxing stay, while the kids will have a whale of a time.

The facilities were good. The toilers/showers were certainly cleaned regularly, but while there are two different blocks on site, anyone camping down at the far end of the river had a long walk to the loo. There was free use of a freezer for freezer blocks, which was invaluable, and also a laundry which, to be honest, was a little on the pricy side. There was free wifi in the café, which apparently extended as far as the play area.

We found the site admin to be friendly and helpful. She was regularly on site and was very approachable. The electricity went down across the site for a short while, and when it was restored she toured the site to ensure everyone was back up again. One minor niggle was that we were a bit far from the electric hookup point. In fairness, we had that issue last time we were there, and we were given the use of an extension cable for free.

This time I just bit the bullet and took a trip to snowdonia camping and bought my own ehu extension cable (instead of being about 2m short, I had about 20m left over). If you're going for the first time, measure the length of your ehu cable and ask if it will be long enough, and if not, will they lend you an extension. Another chap was telling me that the ehu system at riverside was among the best he'd been to, able to handle all the toasters, kettles etc without any regular outages.

I could mention all the various things to do in the local area, but as we just stayed on-site the whole time (other than for a visit to cadwalladers ice cream café in porthmadoc), I won't. Instead, I'll point out that we never felt the need to go anywhere else and everyone was happy with that.

When you consider that our four children range from 1 to 13 years old, that's a great compliment to the site and, ultimately, why we won't be leaving it another two years before we return.

This was our first camping trip. We're local to the area and didn't want to go too far from home.

Campsite wasn't too busy and found a space by the river. It was very peaceful to hear the water running :) After putting the tent up we went for a walk around the campsite.

The toilet blocks were kept clean and couldn't fault them in any way. Took the little one to the play area and found a little sand pit there too, our little one loved it!

On the whole we really enjoyed camping and are planning our return trip to Riverside.

 5 Star campsite *****

We were a party of three adult ladies and two small dogs, arriving with a car and trailer, for a three night stay at Riverside camping. The main objective was to see if the site would be suitable to bring an elderly disabled uncle in a wheelchair, with us, to give him a holiday at a later date.

On arrival we could see at a glance that the photographs printed on the web, did not do justice to the site, it was lovely. We were met by a very friendly lady who went through every thing quickly with us, which we appreciated after a long hot drive here, and we were pointed in the direction of our site (I would like to point out that I had been in communication with this lady by email regarding deposits etc, and also with numerous questions about the site, to which she replied both efficiently, quickly, and in a friendly manner) prior to our arrival. Please note that cards are not accepted at reception only cheques and cash. 10/10 here

We found our pitch with no trouble at all, it was right next to the river which ran around the camp site.

After a long journey the first thing on our minds was to find the Loo's. We did not have to look far, the toilets and showers including a full disabled bathroom was a mere 50 yards in the centre of the site. Also washing up points chemical waste and Laundry provided. We did our first recky and found them to be really nice, very clean, well kept, plenty of mirrors, showers well designed, and supplied with soap if you had forgotten your own. So 10/10 here.

Then we got down to the business of erecting the tent. We always go for electric hook up and it was easy to sort out. We did notice that there was plenty of sites for people who did not want electric hook up, so every one catered for here.

We also took in that all the pitches were flat and very spacious, with plenty of hard standing ones ( which had a covering of grass so as not to spoil the look of the place). For this trip we had taken the smaller tent we own, which is a five man tent with two bedrooms but it is still quite a size, ( the tent we will be bringing next time will be the outwell XXL which has four bedrooms and can cater up to 12 people).

On looking at the pitch it was well big enough to put up our larger tent. ( some camp sites we have been to have made us take two pitches for our outwell XXL, which you can imagine runs up the cost). So we were happy to see that it will not be the case here. 10/10.

Right so once tent was up and bedding sorted, we were able sit down with a nice cuppa and enjoy the view. From our pitch we could see a good sized play area for children, which was pretty central but yet, although there were loads of children on site, the noise level was very low, may be down to the planning of the site and the well sited tree's helped to keep the noise down. No, all we could hear was the lovely running sound of the river, which was extremely peaceful and calming. 10/10

Come the evening we sat round our glowing BBQ coles ( wood burners not allowed for safety reasons, but you can add a little coal as coal does not spit) and watched the sun go down with a nice glass of wine or a few beers and then bed for a peaceful nights sleep. 10/10.

Other amenities on the site is a rather nice garden centre, so if you have green fingers you will be at home here, and just through the garden centre is a great cafe with a balcony so you can sit outside if you want to enjoy the good food they had on offer( even a roast dinner on sunday's), which is up a flight of stairs. We thought this was going to be our first stumbling block, But no, they had thought of every thing, they have a lift to take up wheelchairs and prams, so again 10/10.

Dogs are welcome on site as long as they are kept on a leads or long tethered leads giving them plenty of space to run around, and there is also a lovely dog walk with facilities to put the doggy poop in, so 10/10 there to.

There are plenty of beaches, pubs and historical sites to visit round and about, just in case you get bored with the beautiful site you are pitched on. So in our view 10/10 for this too.

Now the one thing that I personally would have liked to have seen would have been a better stocked shop on site. There is a small shop in reception selling toys, BBQ coals and milk but you have to go a mile in the car to the nearest Spar if you want anything else. Lucky for us we brought enough with us so it was not a main issue, But I would have liked to have one personally myself. So for this I give 9/10.

Finally I have to admit that weather plays a big part in camping, and we were very lucky to have had a glorious weekend, so much so that we have booked for August bank holiday weekend and a week in September. Riverside camping can not control the weather but have done their best to make ones stay what ever the weather a really good one. Rain or shine I will enjoy my holidays here and are looking forward to many more stays.

Absolute fantastic week, we stayed the week before Easter and the weather was wonderful,

Site is really clean. The dog enjoyed paddling in the river. An amazing place for wildlife,

The toilets were spotlessly clean at all times, even when the site began to fill up for the Easter break. Will definitely come back.

The pitch was right on the river and the sound of the water was wonderful.

The garden centre cafe is quite reasonable and the cakes are lovely.

Nice site this. Highly recommended. Stayed three nights over Easter weekend as part of a party of 8 Adults and 5 Children between 3 and 9 years of age.

Set in a really nice sheltered spot close to Caernarfon and Llanberris. Park owner very friendly and helpful. Site was nice and tidy, campers were well behaved (apart from us!).

Toilet block always really clean, free showers always hot. No negatives on this one. One tip. They don't have a credit card machine.

Not that it was a problem, they just let us pitch anyway, also lent us an extension lead for the EHU as ours was not long enough. Will be back for another brilliant weekend soon.

Just returned from a week's stay here. 2 adults and 2 children, 11 & 8. We've visited quite a few sites now and all on the recommendations we have read here, so here's mainly positives and a couple of negatives about this site:

Positives: lovely setting, easy access to lots of places. Toilets and showers clean, didn't have to queue. Very heavy rain one night but the ground wasn't too soggy. The river is great for the children. Playground central and was very popular. Felt very safe. Highly recommend the Galeri in Caernarfon, we went to see Shrek here on a rainy morning and had a lovely lunch there afterwards. Really good value for money. Crabbing in Caernarfon excellent fun.

Negatives: the website states they take 35 tents and 25 caravans/motorhomes. At one stage the site was so crowded, myself and my son counted the tents, there were over 50, with many caravans etc. Too. I understand the owners need to make their money in the school holidays but it was getting ridiculous.

It also states plenty of room for ball games, well there may have been if there weren't so many tents, as it was balls were hitting tents, cars and windbreaks. There is also supposed to be a policy of minimum noise after 10pm. A lot of sites we have been to also have this rule, which I think is a good one. Here it was not enforced.

Perhaps if the owner/warden took a tour around after 10 sometimes they would be able to address the situation. The cafe attached to the garden centre is lovely, it now serves in the evenings on Fridays and Saturdays, the food is ok but prices steep for what you get, eg side order of onion rings (not homemade, exactly like the Tesco ones I buy) was £2.25 for 4 onion rings!

Overall a good site, I don't want the negatives to outweigh the positives here and we would visit again, but not perhaps in July / August.

We have just returned from 3 nights at this site. We went to this site due to a personal recommendation, along with all the fantastic reviews that other campers have left.

The location is fantastic. There is a wide diversity of things to see and do without going too far. The scenery is spectacular both in the surrounding area and from the campsite itself.

The pitches were flat and pegs were easy to get in - 2 positives! There had been a lot of rain prior to our visit and some pitches were too muddy and out of action. Where we were pitched was fine though.

After the previous reviews we were very surprised with the toilet and shower facilities. They were old and needed repair and renovation. However, more importantly, we never found them clean during our stay. This may be due to only 4 working ladies toilets and 2 mens for a large number of tents. The standard of cleanliness did spoil our stay slightly.

Our children enjoyed playing in the stream, although it was a bit deep and fast flowing for our younger children.

We also found that tents were pitched quite close together which limited the amount of play area - although the small play park was good the older children wanted to play football and cricket but couldn't find space.

Really disappointed with this site after reading previous reviews, however I totally agree with the last review written and feel there will be many more of these to come.

Site

Overcrowded, guidelines touching on tent pitches, people were going out and buying windbreaks just to get a bit of privacy. Large groups dominated the fields, there were 17 cars between 3 groups which cramped everyone in, looked terrible, chewed up the grass and was very dangerous for kids. No space for ball games and lack of facilities 5 toilets across 2 blocks and 3 showers for ladies and I counted 20 caravans and 50 tents. Facilities were covered in dirt and hair not cleaned in a week.

Positive was a great location for Snowdonia and attractions.

Very pleasant stay here, despite the weather.

Excellent welcome, and shown to our pitch on arrival

Good for young families with space for the children. Childrens area has slide, swings and climbing frames.

Shower and toilet facilities clean and tidy.

Also provision for the freezing of the blue freezer blocks to keep the picnic cool.

Fishing on site with the relevant permits.

Well recommended first class.

Lovely site but very crowded, we had a tent right next us and we couldn't get to the water facilities. The stream was lovely very fast, the drawbacks were, we were right where you could moor dingys and we had people coming through when we were eating. We also we had a lot of rain and we thought we may have to vacate in the early hours and it nearly burst the banks. The toilet blocks were dirty and smelled and over crowded as was the site, overpriced for the facilities. On the plus side the garden centre is beautiful and so are the tea rooms but very pricey.
