Just back from an excellent camping trip to the Hay Festival. Ashbrook is the perfect spot for this (though I should keep my mouth shut or we won't be able to get in next year). It's just a 10-15 minute walk to the event and 20-25mins to Hay-on-Wye. A pretty walk across fields and country lanes.
The owners/staff were exceptional. They work TIRELESSLY to provide you with a pristine site, immaculate toilet/shower block, and to attend to your needs. They even have time for a friendly chat when they see you. You're escorted to your pitch and in the case of a caravan they even site it for you with a little tractor - saved my appaling reversing skills! The site itself is small (which is good from my perspective) with pretty views of the surrounding hills and sheep. The way we came was also really easy for towing and there are no single track roads. I have never been to a better site.
We somehow missed the fact that the showers are 50p a go, which we didn't mind because the water was mostly hot and were spotlessly clean. First place where I have not been faced with a grotty mop and bucket to slop out after myself - how do they manage without this? Brilliant.
Some pitches aren't allowed cars on them, like ours, but we unloaded and loaded fine, and then moved the car to the parking area.
All in all the best campsite we've ever been on with our two boys. We're definitely booking again for next year.

The best site I have ever visited in terms of friendliness and cleanliness.
We were given a very friendly welcome and escorted to our pitch. I hadn't brought a hook up cable, but Alvin went back to bring one we could borrow for the duration. He made sure we were positioned to get the best of the view and the evening sun. The shower and toilet block were immaculate - literally spotless!, as well as warm, with the added attraction of R2 playing quietly. Alvin directed us to the footpath and gave us directions to Hay on Wye (nearest town).
We'll be back!

This was our second visit to Ashbrook and certainly not our last. Alvin and Denise are very friendly hosts who can't do enough to help. The facilities are impeccable (amazing showers and very clean toilets). It is only a 20 minute walk from the Hay Festival and well worth being so close. The wifi struggled to make it to our motorhome but as it was only installed on the day of our visit I'm happy to forgive!

This is the best camping site along the whole of the Offa's Dyke long distance path. We have just finished the path and found this site in Hay-on-Wye the best by a country mile and very reasonable charges too compared to several other sites charging the same for vastly inferior facilities. The facilities on site were excellent (piped music in the shower and toilet block) and the pitches top rate. The owner could not have been more accommodating. A must. We went to the Three Tuns pub for an excellent meal.

What a gem of a caravan site in a beautiful location, and the owners Alvin & Denise are excellent and very professional, nothing is too much trouble for them, they even lend a hand siting your caravan.
The facilities are exemplary and immaculate with liquid soap for every wash basin, thankfully there is no play area to spoil the tranquil surroundings.
An added bonus is the security barrier and a large dog (in a pen) to alert the owners of visitors, so one can feel safe leaving your caravan.
Highly recommended.

Having read previous reviews we had high expectations of this site and weren't disappointed. We have just spent six nights at Ashbrook and will definitely be returning. The owners are the most friendly and helpful we have met and they work hard to maintain high standards on site. The site is level with a lot of hard standings and adequate water service points and litter bins. The toilets and showers are immaculately clean and tidy. It is possible to walk into Hay in approx 25 minutes across two fields and along a quiet country road. Hay is a very attractive market town with pubs and restaurants for eating out. For walkers, the area offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the beautiful scenery round about. No playground facilities. This quiet site was perfect for us!

What a lovely site in a great location run by the most helpful of couples’.
This is not a large site but it is one that is kept immaculate, so nice to find. Upon arrival we were shown personally to our pitch and given the free use of an extension lead when finding our lead just too short to reach the power outlet; this was something pre-empted by the owner. Unexpectedly we were provided with our own bench and table delivered to us by the owner an hour into our stay. The site has the best shower/toilet block we have come across. It is kept immaculately clean, sweet smelling and provides liquid soap at every basin. The building is heated and has hot showers, a pet niggle of mine, so worth the 50p charge. A dish wash area, be it not part of the main block, again is kept spotless and is provided with bowls drying racks and again hot water. The site does have rules but none that any reasonable minded person could ever take issue with. All rules are intended to maintain site standards and give all guests the most pleasant of stays at this excellent site. The owners were an absolute pleasure, advising on local walks and restaurants, going out of their way to obtain telephone numbers for us. They genuinely seemed only too pleased to help and take and obvious pride in their site.
The site is located just outside Hay on Wye, which is an easy walk or literally ten minutes by car.

Only now am I able to convey my appreciation of the welcome and friendly instructions on arrival.
The facilities are very well maintained with improvements constantly being planned and undertaken. The investment made on the camp-site has been staggering, and as Alvin told me, a lot of expense is unseen, being underground.
The hedges were being trimmed at the time we were there, which kept the site looking very smart, but I didn't offer help, as we took the short walk into Hay, passed the festival ground and into town. We had a good meal at the Blue Boar, and then a walk along the riverbank having been 'booked-out' afore lunch. Return to the site and our unit and settle to admire the views and later a peaceful night.
We hope to be back soon.

Just returned from a five night Bank Holiday weekend in Hay.
Ashbrook is an excellent site owned and run by Denice and Alvin a most helpful and obliging couple. Facilities cannot be faulted with washing materials and Aerosol's in every cubicle.
Only problem we found was the shortcut to Hay involved a style where the path leading from it was steeply sloping and slippy.
My wife had a nasty moment (bit dodgy on her pins).
This is of course not the Campsites responsibility and is some distance away. I would imagine local council or highways would need to make it safe.

We have just returned from 2 nights at this site to meet up with family. The site is lovely and very well cared for. Our 4 Tibetan Terriers were welcome FOC. It's close to a main road but that's not an issue. Toilet and shower facilities are the best we have seen - absolutely spotless though luckily we checked the showers out before going to use them as it's 50p a time. Plenty of hot water and enough time for a lovely shower. One thing we noticed is that the mirror and hair dryers are in with the toilets and not the showers which would be better. Also there are 2 steps up to the disabled toilet and shower which does not make it wheelchair accessible. Some lights around the site would be helpful for when it's dark. The chemical waste and grey water use the same cesspit. I think that could be improved. Hard standings were of a good size and there was plenty of grass in the middle for children to play
Situated just on the outskirts of Hay on Wye it's a lovely 20 minute walk over 2 fields and down a reasonably quiet road to the town which has a lovely selection of shops and eating places.
The only downside to our stay was when our family were asked for £3 each just to walk onto the site. They didn't pay as they weren't staying but even if they were staying for the afternoon we think £3 is too much to pay.
This however is a lovely new site with friendly owners and will develop over the next couple of years. It is certainly a site we will come back to.
