Hendra is an excellent campsite and a really good base for a holiday in Newquay and as a base for exploring Cornwall in general.
Located approximately one mile from Newquay, the site sits impressively on the main A392 road into Newquay, and it’s impeccably kept frontage and reception area give the impression that this is a quality site.
The site is very much geared towards family holidays, and this becomes very apparent in the summer holidays. Our two week stay straddled the end of the school term, and in the second week the site became very busy. For those without children be aware that the site is very busy during school holidays, booking during the school term is probably more advisable, the site is a lot more relaxed, and a little cheaper!
As a very large, family based park, the site has a comprehensive array of facilities; most conveniently located in the centre of the park. This includes a bar and cabaret suite, amusement arcade, laundrette, outdoor pool and takeaway/restaurant facilities. There is also a very good Costcutter supermarket on site with all of the essentials; we often enjoyed a freshly baked pain au chocolat at the start of the day! Prices are reasonable; however there are Morrisons and Lidl supermarkets located within a 2 minute drive of the site.
Some correspondents have criticised the park for charging campsite patrons to use the Oasis indoor water park on site. In fairness to the site, this facility is advertised and marketed as an external facility to the campsite, and is widely advertised locally. The pitch fees include a subsidised entry fee to the water park, and a weekly pass is also available, along with certain opening times for campsite patrons only. The waterpark is very good value for money and a good facility. The site also has a decent outdoor pool, which is free of charge to campsite patrons.
The on-site cabaret is quite small for the size of the campsite, and feels quite old and dated; it’s by no means a bad facility but could probably do with a refurb. If you wish to catch the evening entertainment be sure to get there early, as seating is often at a premium. There was a good variety of acts over the week; a magician act was very good, although the singing qualities of some of the entertainment staff left a lot to be desired!
The site itself is kept very well; pitches are kept to a good standard. Camping fields each have a communal washing and toilet block, all of which are immaculate and regularly cleaned, even with piped music in the bathroom/toilet area. Our field was situated at the top of the park, closest to the road. This had the advantage of being very well sheltered by a grass knoll at the side of the field, and large trees on the perimeter. There was some traffic noise which wasn’t too obtrusive, although there are fields further from the road for those wanting something more tranquil.
The pitches themselves are of a generous size, and allow anything up to a 6 berth tent to be pitched comfortably. Larger pitches are also available. In our field there was a very slight slope on some of the pitches, although nothing too major.
As for the surrounding area, ignore all the sensationalist headlines, Newquay is still a brilliant holiday destination for all ages. The town centre has a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants, and of course there are the excellent beaches and waves for surfing. When the tide is out, it is possible to go on a beachside walk across the main town centre beaches, with plenty of caves to explore within the cliff faces. There are plenty of attractions within Newquay, Buccaneer Bay has recently opened and is very good.
The site is probably a little too far to walk into Newquay, and is at least a mile from the coast. This of course does have advantages in that the sea breezes do not get too fierce. There is a bus stop outside the campsite, with regular services and reasonable fares. It’s certainly better than paying the extortionate parking fees!
Hendra is situated within a short drive of the main A30, and there is an array of great attractions within a reasonable drive. We enjoyed the shipwreck museum at Charlestown near St.Austell, along with Bodmin Jail and Land’s End. Healey’s Cornish Cyder Farm is also quite close by, it is a working cider brewery, with free admission (tours available quite cheaply). This is very popular with free cider tasting also available!
Also, in recent summer seasons, a circus has been taking place not too far from the campsite, there are plenty of discount vouchers on offer and it is well worth visiting, especially as it is within walking distance of the site!
All in all we really enjoyed my holiday at Hendra, we have very happy memories of it and intend to go again. Would definitely recommend it, as it was a brilliant campsite.

Stayed at this site many times and I have to say it catered for everything I and the family needed entertainment at night top class kids entertainment brill (theyd of moved in given the chance)
Shop on site which shuts about 7.30-8.00pm food outlet during day and fastfood at night so don't need to cook if you don't want to very very big swimming pools ---1 inside and 1 outside
Overall I got to say the only faults I have with hendra (and there's only 2)
1) I don't think and there was quite a few people saying it that the club house isnt big enough they need to build a bigger place to accommodate every 1 if you don't get in early you'll be stood up at back
2) there's a cash point in shop but have to pay to get your own money out (don't like paying for my money although I'm not having a go the machine might not belong to hendra )
I'd definitely go again

Just returned from 10 days camping as a group of seven with two children under 7 and two teenage girls.
On Arrival we were directed to a holding field with lots and lots of others and my first thought was that it was going to be chaos getting to our pitch but was very pleasantly surprised with how efficient and painless it was.
Then we arrived at our pitch in Pine field which was close to the main road and the site entrance which was unsuitable for my younger two children. I was surprised as they took the ages of our party at the time of booking. That being said the staff did sort this out for us with no issues at all(but our two pitches were no longer together and we were between two caravans)
As some bad weather moved we put up a gazebo and within a couple of days we were told we have broken the 3 metre firebreak rule (but I think the caravan next to us did not like having young children next to him as they wake up early)but jack the warden did offer us several solutions (and the very nice family in the caravan next door did offer to let us drag our tent over on to there pitch Thank you if you are reading this)but we chose to relocate to Rally Field.
It was a fantastic solution (thanks Jack) no set pitches, plenty of space,no busy roads for the kids to cross and fantastic views and the whole experience felt far less commercial to me (just a bit windier but a small price to pay)
The older two girls loved the site entertainment (really not my thing as I prefer less commercial sites but was outvoted this time and although I did visit the club I will refrain from making any comments as it will be totally biased).
The site management, staff and general running of the site are without doubt the best I have ever come across and all problems were dealt with immediately and efficiently
The site wardens make several visits to each field per day and are not afraid to offer help or keep any noise down.
The site facilities are spotlessly clean and very well maintained (i cant think of a single item not working)
The pools are excellent
All in all we had a fantastic time once we relocated to Rally field the younger children were then free to explore and make friends without us worrying too much.

Have just returned from a weekend away at Hendra Holiday park.
The site is very good with the pitch sizes being very big plenty of room for my Swift Challenger 520se, Awning and Car.
The toilets are very clean as the site itself is spotless.
My son enjoyed the park and the Arcade very much and we really didn't see him that often so coming to Hendra bring plenty of money as the kids eyes light up with the Arcade and the Bowling that was good value for money only being £2.00 a game, he really enjoyed the entertainment that was put on for the children with party dances and wrestling this made his weekend.
The club room was very good size although it did get a little packed during the evening I'd hate to see it during the Summer months, although I felt the prices are a little dear at £1.60ish for a fruit shoot and £1.50 for half a coke.
The swimming pool is lovely and warm and has 3 water slides but the only downside is that you have to pay to swim at £2.50 for adults and the same price for children over the age of 3 it could be a bit pricey if you've got a big family who want to swim everyday.
All in all this is a lovely site and I really enjoyed myself but the weather was a little bit of a let down, I know that there isn't much that the campsite can do about that.

Just returned from a short break Friday through till Sunday to try out a new tent we bought. The camp site is well cared for and very clean.
We were given a pitch near the bathroom facilities which had its advantages and disadvantages. Convenient for going to the loo but a bit busy if you wanted a bit of privacy.Another disadvantage of our pitch was that it was on quite a slope so everything including us at night tended to slip downwards.
The bathroom facilities were the best we have ever used. Spotlessly clean and modern. We never had to wait for a shower cubicle to become available as they were plenty of them.
Everywhere on the site was free from rubbish and was well maintained. There are several play areas for the children.
We only got to use the indoor pool as the outdoor one seemed to be closed ( even though the weather would have been great for outdoor swimming). However the indoor pool was very good and the children loved the three slide/water shoots that were there. The only downside is that there is an additional charge to use the pool per session whereas in all other campsites we have visited pool admission is inclusive.
The quality and cost of the food in Marios and the Tavern was disappointing. It would be extremely costly for a family to visit the restaurants more than once or twice. The area outside the Tavern was lovely to sit at during the day and also at night when they have heaters to keep you warm whilst enjoying your evening.
As mentioned by other reviewers the drinks can become expensive especially if you are a larger group/ family. As we were only there for two nights we only watched one night of entertainment so it is difficult to comment on the quality of it. However the night we went there was a comedian and he was reasonably good.
Overall we would recommend Hendra as a good camping holiday venue with excellent views.Kids didn't want to come home so we would definitely book again however we would cook our own meals and possibly go off site if we wanted to dine out as there are plenty of nearby pubs / restaurants.

Fantastic site, clean grounds, loos and showers, lots of hot water all day, large pitches and very helpful staff. We ate in the bar most evenings the food was nice and the service very quick would have liked a larger menu though. Kids loved the pool,'the red slide is wicked.' Ross who taught wave boarding in the evenings was a huge hit with both my kids age 15 and 11, we have to go back next year so they can have lessons with him again. We enjoyed Joe who was playing guitar in the pizza place in the evenings just around the corner from the wave boarding lessons, perfect.

A very big site with all you would expect swimming pools, club house shop etc.
We travelled down on the friday night as we knew we had a 320 mile trip from wrexham, we arrived at 7.30 am on the saturday morning we were told to go the holding field and the reception would open at 8.00 am Great we thought we can get on the pitch early and get set up and have a few hours sleep, However when I asked what time we could have the pitches we were told 12.00.Pm
The site it self is big with everything on it
The pitches, we had three together although this is what we wanted you still have to pay an extra £10.00 per pitch for friends and family to be together, again I don't think this is justified.
The clubhouse is not great, very poor cabaret and high prices £ 4.00 per pint! we only went there twice.
If you venture into Newquay use Biotravel taxis
Very reliable, If you have kids go to the FORT pub
Lots of play areas, great views and food.
We went to a couple of adventure parks Crealy which is about a 20 minute drive from the site
This was a good park with lots of stuff for the smaller child.
We also went to Flambards which is about an hours
Drive, this was THE park very big, loads of rides
Excellent time was had by all.
Would go back to Newquay but probably a smaller camp, Hendra is far too big,and it has outgrown its facilities people looking for chairs in the club at 7.15 pm cant be right.
Newquay itself is a lovely town with beautiful beaches Fistral beach was great get in the ocean
And do some body boarding !

We had a great time at hendra, and have booked again for next year. Toilets are fantastic, pools clean, general maintenance very good.
We stayed on sycamore and did have a few problems with noise. Nobody else has mentioned this on the reviews so perhaps we were unlucky. That said it wasn't just ourselves, but also other families that we had made friends with were also woken up. It seemed the toilet block was a late night hangout for teenagers, by late I mean after 12 and sometimes at 2am. We did call security who did deal with the problems but I would have preferred to have slept right through. It is good that you can call someone out to deal with the odd rowdy episode. Like I said I have booked for next year and hope to sleep between 12 and 2. Beaches are great, good public toilets on all the beaches we visited. Roll on august 2010

We had planned to visit Hendra for several years and this year we finally got there. On arrival we were booked in and dealt with by some very friendly and efficient staff, even though it was incredibly busy. (Saturday in the school holidays). The pitch was fine and we had plenty of room and it was not near the main road, as we had requested when we booked. Some of the pitches are near the main road out of Newquay, and we were warned that this could be quite noisy at night. On the up side, it means that you are right on the main route should you need to use the regular bus service into Newquay.
Morrisons supermarket is a 10/15 minute walk away, although the cost cutter shop on site had 90% of what we wanted. Showers were ok, although 2 out of 6 cubicles were out of action for several days when we visited. The toilets and sinks were very clean and there were plenty of them. The outdoor pool was great and the indoor activities for the kids were good too. The evening entertainment was ok, but at over £12 for 2 pints and 2 cokes, it could work out a bit expensive if you went there every night. The club is open until about 1pm, with some good music, which impressed our teenagers.
We were also impressed with the way the pitch allocation was managed. When a pitch was vacated, it was often filled within an hour or two. We enjoyed our stay at Hendra, but our next camping trip will be within walking distance of a beach, as this suits us better.

We have just returned from two weeks at Hendra and were most impressed. Among the strengths of the site were the following:
Lovely big pitch and great views on a standard pitch in Maple field. A tour of the site suggests that this is the best field. Although serviced pitches are on other fields the views are not as good.
Very friendly staff.
Great and spotless showers which seemed to be cleaned 24 hours a day by the same lady!
Great organization e.G. Special saturday morning check in field to speed up the process, limited time and supervised queuing in pool during busy periods.
Beautifully kept site, lovely flowers, frequent litter picking and mowing of pitches.
Fantastic indoor pool
Wonderful beaches
Newquay was fab, Ate at the Harbour restaurant which would definitely recommend (not to be confused with the New Harbour Restaurant)
No real negatives to report really. Did have to queue for a shower during peak periods but was well worth it. We would definitely go back. Be prepared, some of the pitches in Maple have a significant slope and we had to go off site to locate extra blocks to level the caravan.
