Spent the bank holiday weekend at this caravan and camp site; had a great weekend but was generally not impressed with the facilities:
Positive
- Pub was in a lovely setting by the river
- Site was in a great location for seeing the surrounding area; near to cycle routes to Tewkesbury and Gloucester
- Good other pubs nearby
Negative
- Toilet / shower block was of a poor standard. Hot water ran out very quickly and did not recover well, if and when it was available; obviously not cleaned very often. Also some distance from the campsite.
- Three portaloos placed in the middle of the campsite were good to begin with but were full by the second day and not emptied
- Campsite was one big field with no protection from the elements (especially wind)
- Got pretty wet and muddy quickly, although the grass pitch areas were generally fine
- Pub and staff were a little odd, although generally friendly
As someone else has written, some investment in this site could completely turn it around as it's in a great location, but the facilities are just not up to standard (and look nothing like the pictures on the website!)

Beautiful spot - very handy local pub next to the river which was fine for us but perhaps limited for those looking for more to do of an evening.
Very basic toilet block, needs updating.
The distance from camper to toilet block was far and although we are by no means lazy people, it was a bit of a trek to have shower, dispose of waste etc.
Very reasonable rates HOWEVER.
Our main problem was that we were kept awake by very noisy neighbours who partied loudly until the early hours. We did inform the campsite managers but nothing appears to have been done as the following night we were kept awake by the same people til around 2.30 am! Needless to say, we cut short our visit.

We spent a weekend at this site on a club rally.
The touring field is flat. A rough stone roadway runs round the site in a circular fashion.
All the hook up pitches are on the outside of the roadway and the non hook up tent pitches on the inner.
There is a single fresh water tap in the middle of this field approx 200/300 yards away from most hook up pitches. The only grey water / toilet waste drains are at the toilet block approx 400 yards from many pitches. The only bins are at the entrance to this field near the toilet block.
The toilet block is very dated and in dire need of updating and doe's not appear to be cleaned regularly, hot water runs out very quickly and doe's not recover quickly. The shower curtains were filthy and looked as if they were there last year when the site flooded and have not been taken down and cleaned since then!
The adjacent pub serves good basic food at reasonable prices.
The on site shop stocks basic items and also doubles as the reception.
The owners are not the friendliest individuals and seem to fail to appreciate that we the 'campers / caravanners' are their guests and are providing them with their livelyhood!
To sum up for the cost of this site[ circa £15 + for a van/2adults] it is 'light years' away from most good sites and its lovely location on the banks of the Severn is its only 'saving grace'.

We (a group of 5 Dads and 10 kids in 4 tents) spent a pleasant weekend on this site. There is a large camping field running along a narrow stream which flows in to the River Severn nearby. A track runs around the edge of the main field where the powered pitches are. In the centre, where there is no power, you can pitch where you like. There was loads of room giving the kids plenty of space to play football, tennis etc. They also enjoyed throwing stones in to the stream(!) and feeding the ducks.
As others have said, depending on where you pitch, it is a bit of a trek to the toilet block. There were (I think) 5 showers in the men's block which on a busy weekend (ours wasn't particularly) may mean queuing for showers. There was no hot water in the men's block at about 8am Sunday morning. This was almost certainly because the basin hot taps can be left running accidentally. If the taps were changed to push button type this would not happen. The showers are large and have push button taps and fixed temperature.
We did not try the pub on site, we had food & drink with us.
The shop is small and basic. Check in is strange - you are not issued with any receipt or paperwork so if you pay by cash there is no record of the transaction except for a note that is written out and kept by them. The owner takes a drive round the campsite a couple of times a day to check all is well.
The surrounding area is lovely. We walked alongside the River Severn for a few miles and ended up at a pleasant pub for lunch.
Outside the shop is a marker showing the height of the flooding in July 2007, about a metre above ground level at this point.
I would probably revisit this site, but the thought of doing so doesn't fill me with huge amounts of excitement.

Just returned from this site having had a thoroughly enjoyable weekend. I'll try and address some of the comments that have been submitted in previous reviews to provide readers with some form of balance.
1. I found the owners to be perfectly friendly - yes, we were given a quick summary of the site rules and facilities on arrival, but lets face it - all quiet after 11pm, etc is reasonable and standard on most sites so those who complain are obviously the same individuals who disturb the rest of the site in the early hours when most of us would like to enjoy a peaceful nights sleep!
2. Having seen the many pictures in the pub of the total devastation from the floods in 2007, I am quite frankly amazed that the site is back up on it's feet so soon - it's not 'as new' but the owners deserve credit for keeping it going so well. Despite a week of almost solid rain prior to our visit, the pitches were well drained and very solid underfoot, in stark contrast to some very expensive and commercial sites that have been absolute mud baths this year.
3. The setting is lovely, the pub is small but welcoming and we found the food to be of a very good standard with a good selection available.
4. We were pitched some way from the only toilet block, but we were born with legs so not as big a problem as people make out - after all, we were camping without the on board facilities most people enjoy in their caravans. The toilet blocks are nothing fancy but then they were under 4ft of water this time last year! As far as cleanliness is concerned, yes they could have been better, but then again, who are the disgusting slobs who leave a toilet soiled in the first place (would they pee all over the seat and leave it like that at home? I would hope not!) The toilets are as clean as the last person chooses to leave them in this case.
Do not be put off by some of the negative comments on here - if you treat the site and it's owners with the respect they deserve then you will get the same respect in return. I will certainly use the site again and urge you to consider it on it's merits and not the comments of people who expect the earth for a few quid a night.

We stayed for just one night as the site is only 30 miles from us and we were after a cheap night's camping on a pub site. It's what we got.
I don't think the owners are particularly grumpy, just odd. Not unlike Royston Vasey! Anyway, I was extremely pleasant and ended up having quite a laugh with Mr Owner, tho' Mrs Owner remained steadfastly odd.
Huge camping field with absolutely no shelter from any elements and we had heavy rain and strong winds to contend with.
Very basic shower and toilet blocks, that are at least 150m from camping field and much in need of updating. Gents was shabby and dirty, though Mrs S tells me the ladies was clean.
Pub served excellent beer and cider in a pretty location but served standard, uninspiring food.
All in all a disappointing stay and no matter how close and convenient, we won't be returning.

Just come back from a very wet weekend. The area pretty with some nice walks, unfortunately due to the rain we didn't do much of this. The site was nice with a little shop, only one wash block (although quite large) and a pub which overlooked the river Severn, which was very pleasant in the sunshine. Although the wash block was a little dated, they were clean with plenty of hot water and there was plenty of room in the 4 shower cubicles, also nice big sinks for washing up. Our tents were at the end of the field which was a little distant to the block but there was always a shower or toilet available. As there was only one block if the site got very busy it may become a problem. Although we had heard that the owners had been a little grumpy, WE had not come across this at all. A very good value site.

Spent the Spring Bank Holiday weekend here with daughter and family in motorhome next to us. The camping and touring field is huge and we were lucky enough to have two pitches up in the corner. It was nice and sheltered when the wind got up later in the weekend. The field is quite a long walk from the toilet block which is a bit of a drag in the rain. The block was rather old and past it's best but very clean and tidy. Plenty of room in the showers and a chair to sit on or put clothes on but the hot water ran out one morning at 10.30. Had two lovely days with sunshine and then the wind and rain started. By the time we left on Monday am the field was extremely wet and the path around the site very muddy. There is plenty to do in this area and would certainly come here again.

This was a good site which is still suffering after the flooding from last year. We arrived on the Friday of the first bank holiday in May. The weather hadn't been great and the field was very wet underfoot. I guess this is because the water table just hasn't recovered in this part of the world.
The facilities on site were good and were clean. Great big shower area with plenty of room to get changed, lots of hooks and a chair in the cubicle too! The showers were free and always had hot water.
The pub is slightly strange with an odd mix of people, but it was lovely to sit out on the river bank with a pint in hand after our walk in the Malverns. (They are really close by with plenty of walking options!)
I didn't have any contact with the owners as my partner did the booking in. They seemed ok, though the lady seemed a little grumpy from what I heard.
Only downside to this weekend was the weather - it did rain again quite heavily and so we had to pack up on the Monday in a field that was pooling with water. It's a good site, but check the weather before you go, it's going to take some time for the water table to get back to what it was!

Stayed here for 2 nights mid Sept '07 and had a great time. The site was relatively empty so we were able to set camp in a nice secluded spot with no one else around. We have a 33 year old VW camper, awning and dog which cost us £24 for the entire stay - what a bargain.
Beautiful area with a decent pub just up the river bank. Obviously the Red Lion itself is a pub but with having had the misfortune of being flooded 7 times this year needed some work doing.
Following on from previous comments we read re the owners and their attitudes, I would agree, they come across very much as though the paying customer is an inconvenience rather than who's paying for their business to survive. The other negative was the wasking up area / toilet and shower block which would appear to lack any form of cleaning and care other than restocking the toilet roll! A bit of effort by the owners would turn this site into an excellent little gem (flooding being excepted.).
All that said though we made the best of a great weekend and wouldn't say not to go, just be prepared for the above and you'll enjoy it.
