August 2004 This was our maiden voyage in to the camping world. My wife, 10 year old daughter and I had not thought about spending the night under the stars although armed with new shiny, clean tent we had a pleasant surprise with our short stay at Haddon Grove. I have been a member of the Armed Forces for over 28 years and this was my first experience of sociable camping! We thought the location and cleanliness of this site was more than adequate for the £6.50 charge. We pitched in the top field which equates to about a 5 minute walk to the ablution block, which is fine until the 3rd glass of wine, pop or tin of beer! The toilets were primitive and unsophisticated but adequate, although an additional shower would be beneficial. The field was fine, the visiting neighbours friendly and the overall easy going nature of the owner made our short visit enjoyable and worthwhile. Our walk to Over Haddon (with a stop for coffee and cake at a small cafe) and Lathkill lasted a leisurely 3 hours which made the afternoon easy and pleasing. In summary this is a basic, but more than satisfactory campsite, if you don’t mind a bit of rough you should encounter few problems staying here. I have heard of many campsites with an abundance of facilities; we may try these in time, but our first venture in to leisure camping left us content, satisfied and relaxed. Spending only the one night at Haddon Grove during the busy Bank holiday gave us a reasonable foundation and we look forward to our next expedition to Derbyshire.

july 2004 Nice farm very friendly farmer (very laid back about everything). The site is quite basic and the shower block is very basic , but it's set in lovely countryside , with lovely views.
The site has a lot of school type trips there but they all seem very well behaved and seem to keep themselves to themselves. Only 3ish miles from Bakewell so if you need something its not far to go or if you fancy a day/night out, we will definately be going back

July 2004 If you want to go back to basics, this is the one. Dont let that put you off though, the site is excellent. The site has about 5 fields and one toilet block, a decent walk away if you are bursting!! The toilets and wash room look like converted stables, so dont expect five star facilities. Overall a pleasant atmosphere with superb views if you get on the right field. An ideal base for walkers and cyclists. Great for kids who like to venture through wooded areas etc. We will be visiting again without a doubt!

Easter 2004 Me and 7 of my friends stayed here at the beginning of the Easter holiday. We had trouble finding a site that would take 8 x 14 year old boys but we finally found this one and we loved it! The views were fantastic, there was loads of room to play ball games and other friendly campers who you could socialise with.
The toilets and showers were reasonable, nothing unexpected when you go camping. There was a large wash room with a small table and chairs where you could cook if the weather was rainy or windy outside. If the weather was rainy the wash room was a perfect place to go and play cards, nice and dry.
There were horses for the small children to look at and a rope swing.
We reluctantly had to go home a day early due to bad weather and the farmer was so nice that he gave us back the money for the night we had not stayed even when we insisted not to take it.
The campsite was a rather big size but each field was near enough to the toilets. It was quite a quiet site but there was a gravelled area near the washroom where you could be a bit louder if you felt the need to.
There was plenty of things to do around the campsite (e.g. visit the local towns and villages [Bakewell, etc], Visit Chatsworth house, Visit many National Trust places and a large amount of walks in the best countryside I've ever seen.
The only down side is that it was 1.5 miles from the nearest shop but as long as you've got what you need that shouldn't be a problem (and the Farm House sells fresh milk).
I'll give this site 9.5/10 and I'm going back at the summer!

Aug 2003 Bank Holiday Having decided to go away at the last minute over the B/H weekend this was the only site that was not fully booked...why??we wondered with trepidation!!...We are quite picky campers..... Well it was busy but there was loads of room and still a fair amount of choice as where to pitch our tent (I think the farmer has about 5 fields in all?) we chose the bottom field which was quite empty and overlooking Lathkill Dale - what a fantastic view!
Yes, the site is very basic but as long as you are prepared it's not a problem - the owner is so laid back and very friendly. The kids had a great time looking at the horses, playing on the rope swings and looking out for the stray sheep wandering around the field!!!!
As long as you are not expecting luxury - this is a great place to stay! And cheap too!!!!

August 2003 The location of this site is fantastic, there are not many places in this country you can stick your head out of your tent in the morning and be greeted with such an amazing view. Ask for a pitch on the bottom field for the best view. Facilities are not enough for the amount of campers but were fine. Try for a shower at odd times or face long queues! There are footpaths right out of the campsite so you can leave the dreaded car where it is! For a good fry up go to the the Smithy in Monyash, good pint mugs of tea and coffee too! For a good pint try the Tetleys in the pub next door. One tip for parking in Bakewell, use the Agricultural Business Centre just out of town, seems a long way out, but is five minutes across the bridge back into town.

July 2003 On the plus side - didn't have to book, has a very friendly owner and is very cheap (£6 for pitch for one night) and there are some nice views from the surrounding fields.
Unfortunately, on the down side - it is very noisy - as it's popular with families and school trips.
The facilities aren't great (not enough and not too clean) and are a long way to walk from most of the pitches. Expect a queue in the morning!
Worst of all - it's a 2 mile walk to either of the local pubs (one in Over Haddon and one in Monyash) so you have to drive. I'd recommend the Monyash pub (Bull's Head) for food / atmosphere though if you do want to go.
I'd give it, on the whole - 6/10. Not bad for one night but not ideal for any longer.

June 2003 We had an extremely enjoyable weekend camping at Haddon Grove campsite!
The site is in a superb location, with fantastic views over Lathkill Dale. There's fantastic walking opportunities in every direction!
The site its self was excellent. There are three large camping fields, with some areas reserved for groups and some for families. The majority of areas were flat too - which is always a bonus!
The facilities are basic but adequate. The toilets are a good distance from the field in which we were pitched - fine in good weather, but wouldn't be so good in driving wind and rain! The number of toilets is also another potential problem - only four for the gents, and four for the ladies! As I say, basic but adequate... There was hot water all day.
There's also a washing up area with two large sinks and plenty of very hot water.
The farmer was very friendly and welcoming.
The site seems to be heavily used by DofE groups and schools - although this didn't pose any problems for us.
In terms of price the site was extremely cheap - during our stay (June 2003, High Season) the cost was only £5 per tent per night!
All in all a fantastic campsite - we will definitely be going again!!

June 2003 Very laid back camp site. Good facilities although the toilet blocks tend to get a little muddy from everyones hiking boots. Thought they could do with a mop and bucket in there so you could wipe the floor when you wanted to have a shower. Hot water available whatever time of day you went for a shower. There's a family shower room with everything you need in it and big enough to move about in with more than one person there. Very friendly farmer and family. Quite a few D.O.E. groups there but they were all well behaved. Great position at the top of Lathkill Dale. Walks right on the door step from the camp site. Great pub in Over Haddon. Extremly friendly and did wonderful food. Superb views too.
