This site is well kept and easy access to the city. We were pleased to see that the fish and chip van still came round the site just as good as last time listen for the horn.
The railway museum is a must and it is free. The castle museum is also very interesting. All in all York is a super place to visit, but be warned this site is always pre booked, you might get a cancellation but best to book in advance.

Site is in an excellent position for the centre of York. 15 Mins walk and you re in the heart of the shops and pubs.
Site consists of main area which appears a bit overcrowded as caravans are practically on top of each other and the Riverside area, which houses about 12 pitches and is a lot less crowded, but you have to go into the main area for the toilet & shower block, not far at all.
The site is alongside the river which has lovely walks and cycle paths along it, also next door to Rowntree Park, which is lovely.
The only downside to this site, and has been form the years we have visited is the attitude of the wardens, It seems they are annoyed with you for even just turning up!
I am considering cancelling our booking for the summer as it has really put me off, although we love this site.

As most previous reviews have stated this an excellent site for visiting York and the surrounding area.
No real need to go over the many attributes.
Only downside on our visit was the water temperature in the showers - boy you don't want to linger - they are seriously cool but that may have been a temporary malfunction.
Now a real moan, not at the site or its wardens but at the many members who pay no heed to the advice / warnings about no arrivals before noon, in our experience this is probably the most time sensitive site in the network due to the narrow access road and yet some arrived at 11.00am and by noon more than a dozen.
You have to vacate this site by 11.15am to try to avoid problems with incoming arrivals but please to help the Caravan Club keep on good terms with neighbours etc. do not arrive before noon.

We have visited this site on many occasions and everything has been said about it. Facilities are what we have all come to expect from the club sites. It is so popular, you really do have to book it well in advance.
York is a short walk away and if you go out the back gate there are all the shops and take aways you could want. We have always used the Swan Inn as a watering hole if we fancy a pint as they have a good selection of real ales. The landlord of this pub has now taken charge of the other pub(The Slip Inn), just down the road, where there are also a good selection of real ales. This pub however was still a work in progress when we visited. If you are visiting York, this is the ideal site, but check with the site about flooding before you arrive.

We have just arrived home after spending 4 nights at this site.
Ideal for walking into York city centre without worrying about parking. It is a pleasant walk along the river bank only taking 10-15 mins.
Plenty to see and do in the city.
Site facilities are excellent.Very clean toilet block and showers.
Big park next door to walk the dog or you can just walk along the river for as far as you would like to go.
Staff are extremely friendly and eager to please.
Cant fault this site at all. Well worth a visit.

This site is ideal for visiting York, its just a 10/15 minute walk to the city centre where there are loads of interesting places to visit. You are not allowed to arrive at the site before 12 oclock and when leaving you have to be of 11.45 because the access road is single lane with no passing points.
There is no play area or dog walking area on the site but next door to the site is a fantastic park. After check in we were handed a bunch of keys, everything is locked up, toilets, information room, laundry, disabled. I did find using the keys a bit of a pain because I kept forgetting them.
You are a 5 min walk to the local shops, pubs, takeaways if you use the gate at the back of the site. Can recommend the local pub the swan where they do cask ales and the local chippy where the fish and chips were delicious.

When the CC set up Rowntree they obviously thought location, location, location. It is just outside the centre of York right on the banks of the Ouse. With some trepidation we followed the route described on the club’s website almost to the centre of York up the A19 from the A64. Barring one scare as a cyclist cut me up on the inside we got there in one piece. Exit from the site is not however a return journey but a whole new ball game. Directions for this are posted in the information room on site.
The main site is well laid out but on our Friday evening was nearly full. We opted to try out the riverside annexe. As the rest of the site these pitches were hard standing accessed via a very narrow secure gated lane. Through the bare trees we could actually see the river. The site is in a City so it’s noisy on the Friday and Saturday nights we stayed it was very noisy. This might have been different on the main site which is set back from the road. Have a look at the cocoa grinding wheels in front of the main building it has a flood marker on it, which is a real eye opener. Staff and facilities are up to the usual CC standard and I felt that the whole site was run like a well ordered ship. (They are used to water there, even the EHU’s are on stilts)
The big thing about this site is York, what a fantastic City, steeped in history and with hoards of shops. There is no shortage of things to do. To name but a few there is York Minster the largest Gothic Cathedral above the Alps, The railway museum (free), The Castle museum, Clifford’s Tower, York Dungeons, Ghost walks, the shambles and if you have time don’t forget a medieval town wall walk great sections of which are still accessible. Finally if it’s nice weather what about a river cruise.
I can see why it’s always full; there is so much to do. So if I can I will go again and again and again.

Great site, and location, 15 min. Riverside walk into town. The most helpful, friendliest staff I have come across so far on a CC site.
Excellent site facilities.
Plenty to do and see in York.
Check on voucher website for money off vouchers for - La Tasca, Ha Ha Bar and Grill, Cafe Uno all of which are in york, also try the Pivo world beers bar, excellent beers.

Spent four nights at this excellent site up until Christmas Eve. It is in a fantastic location, right on the River Ouse and 5-10 minutes walk into York city centre. York is a great city: excellent for shopping, eating, drinking. It has a great history, and there is much to do exploring it. In the immediate area is Rowntree Park, which is pleasant for walking around. The site is also on a long distance walking/cycle network, so within 10 minutes walking, you can be out in open countryside. Facilities on site are excellent and staff kept everything to a very high standard, despite heavy snowfall.
An excellent site; very difficult to get booked so plan ahead. Returning soon.

This site is an absolute marvel, within 10 minutes walk of York City centre. It is, however, so popular that it could be three times the size and it would still be full 365 days a year!
Access is via some fairly tight residential roads. The Caravan Club's rules about accessing the site are therefore, quite rightly, not negotiable, and failure to follow them would leave outfits facing each other with no manoeuvring space and very irate neigbours. So, if you don't follow the rules, you WILL get a ticking off, and you will deserve it. Don't go complaining about grumpy wardens.
We like this site so much that we've been about four times, and we're returning in November 2011, which says it all! However, an 'interesting' feature of the site is its proximity to the River Ouse, which is apt to get a bit too big for its banks. We've been chased off by floods once and threatened by them on another occasion, so 50% of our visits have involved close attention to the flooding website!
The site itself is fine; it's in a city so it isn't the last word in peace and quiet; the toilet blocks are superb. The wardens are fine if you follow their advice! You won't need your car - York is one of the best cities in England for a visit, I think it knocks London into a cocked hat!
Verdict: Excellent site, follow the rules, and don't forget your wellies.
