This site is located in the centre of York adjacent the River Ouse and is owned by the Caravan Club. It is open all the year round for members and non-members. Due to the narrow access road no arrivals are permitted before noon and pitches have to be vacated by 11:15am. Being close to the river the site is liable to flood.
Welcome on arrival was good with clear explanation of facilities. There is a strong emphasis on the 5mph speed limit due to a tragic accident to a child a couple of years ago. This limit applies to children on bikes as well as vehicles and the warden will confiscate bikes if they whizz around or go against the one-way system.
There are 102 touring pitches all hardstandings. Pitches are level so you will not need levelling blocks. There is also a small tenting area. This site is high density but the pitches are separated by well maintained hedges. It does mean that caravans have to be parked as the warden’s direct to maintain safe fire separation and foreign vans have to park nose in. However the wardens will help you park if this causes a problem.
There is a single heated toilet block with showers, WCs and privacy cubicles. Also washing up and vegetable preparation area. These facilities are built at a higher level than the general site above the flood line. There is a disabled facility with WC and shower and laundry facilities at ground level. The facilities were clean.
Service points around the site for water, rubbish disposal and chemical toilet emptying. No recycling facilities on site.
No dog walk or children’s play area on site but you are adjacent to Rowntree Park which caters for both. There are excellent play facilities in the park and a lake with ducks and geese.
Shopping facilities are about 10 minutes walk away and include a range of small shops including Sainsbury’s Local, Costcutter, baker, butcher, hardware and several take-aways. A fish and chip van calls at the site on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings.
We paid £21.45 per night for standard hardstanding pitch with 16amp electrical hook-up, caravan, awning and two adults.
York City Centre is less than 15 minutes walk and includes:
• York Minster with a great view of York from the tower. Fixed entry charges for sightseers rather than voluntary donations.
• A walk around the city walls (about 3.5 miles) which is free
• Jorvik Viking Centre
• National Railway Museum for the railway buffs.Entry is free and you have the opportunity to sit in a Japanese bullet train or see Mallard
• Castle & Castle Museum
• The Shambles shopping area
If you want to see the sights of York this is a good location because you can leave the car on site although there are plenty of car parks in the city if you can’t walk. Parking charges are around £2 per hour. The site is also good for cyclists and York has invested heavily in cycleways.

Short walk into York city centre with all it's attractions. The only gripe is that it's very difficult to book a pitch in advance.
All the facilities are clean, tidy and well maintained.
In the park next door the kids use a rope (wire) slide from morning till evening. This can be a bit wearing after a while for those pitched on the park side of the site.
But to be honest you forgive almost anything because of the site's fantastic location.

Just got back from Rowntree, nice little site but not my favourite club site. Wardens that have moved from Laneside to Rowntree are as lovely as ever, nice to see you again by the way, but I did find the others a little stern and abrupt. Toilets also not the best for the club although I did find them clean with plenty off hot water and never the need to wait for a shower. No kids bath here either but the wardens did let me use the disabled shower room to shower my daughter, this was a great help as the shower head comes off and I was able to shower my daughter at ease without the water splashing in her face.
The best thing about this site is that it is right in the middle of York so no need to use the car every thing is on the door step. Great kids park just next door too.

To Find Site:- The Caravan Club recommend that you approach the site via the A64 to the south of York and then via the A19 into the centre of the City. After about two and a half miles, at the Mecca Bingo keep left over the two river bridges. At the Swan pub turn left and follow signs to campsite.
Rowntree Park has an excellent situation on the River Ouse and very close to all the amenities of the City of York and accepts non members. It is, of course, in an urban setting so there will be a little noise during the day and early evening. There are just over 100 pitches all on hardstanding. They vary in size from suitable for car and caravan/motorhome to very large which would easily accommodate a car/caravan/awning with space to spare. Tents are also accepted but there appears only to be 6 places available for backpackers. There is one main building which accommodates the reception and the toilet/showers. Service points are dotted around the site including specific ones for motorhomes. This is an extremely popular site and advance booking is essential. On the day of departure units must leave by 11.15am and arrivals must be no sooner than midday or risk being turned away. Rowntree Park has a WiFi facility, cards can be purchased from reception, phones and mobile broadband signals are good. However TV is graded as fair and satellite reception will depend on how close you are to tall trees, rather surprisingly the site does not have a TV hook-up on the electric bollards. There are no children's play facilities although there is a large public park next to the site.
The City of York is but a short walk from the site. Reception will sell you a useful map for £1. All the main sites are accessible by foot. The National Railway Museum is well worth a visit and is free. The Castle Museum is another worthwhile visit. York has a full range of shops including a designer outlet centre near the A64 junction with the A19. For supermarkets there is a Sainsbury in the centre of York and a Tesco on the A1036 towards the A64.

This site is almost unique because of its location, so near York City Centre. It takes about 12 minutes to walk from the site, along the banks of the river to the heart of Mediaeval York, yet on site it is peaceful and feels almost rural. From the rear entrance (for which you are given a key) there is access to local shops and takeaways and there are 2 pubs within 3-4 minutes walk. The closest major attraction is the Castle Museum 8 mins.Walk away. Plots vary a little in size but are all large, although very large outfits would find difficulty in accessing the overflow field (tight bend on entry), we had no trouble with a 15 footer. All the facilities are up to normal Caravan Club standards and maintained to a very high order. If you want to visit York and walk to the local attractions, then this is the site for you, even the National Railway Museum, which is on the far side of the town centre is only a 25 minute walk.

We have just had a super week at Yorks Rowntree Park caravan site after trying to get it for a long time, its always booked up due to it location in walking distance of the town centre. It was great to park the car up and forget about it. Lots to do and see in York never a dull moment. The site was very clean and the staff very friendly. Also three evenings at around 5 oclock we had a fish and chip van come on site which served excellent fish and chips and was just what you needed after a long day walking in town, your dinner at your door. All in all cant praise this site enough just hope we can get another week there again sometime.

Location is everything with this site, turn left out of the site and follow the river Ouse, over the Lendal bridge and into the centre of York. The National Railway Museum is of course free and you can easily spend 4 hours in there. Evensong at the minster 17.15 start midweek 1600 start at the weekend is free, the aquistics from the choir is fantastic. Just round the corner from the minster is Michaels restaraunt, reasoanably priced, but if you want to be a restaraunt and not a cafe don't use frozen chips, or heated up steak pie, yet the seafood pie was excellent.
Just a note about the site. Sky tv is ok.

What a lovely well positioned site. 5-10 min walk into the centre of York. Local shops, pub and take aways only a couple of minutes away.
The site itself is right alongside the River Ouse; so if there has been a lot of rain you may find the site is on flood watch (it was whilst we were there), a phone call before you leave may be wise. On site there were lovely clean and warm facilities - even in cold muddy weather!
On the downside, I must agree with the previous reviewer - the wardens can come across as a little stern even if you aren't doing anything wrong. Lighten up guys you have a lovely site.
We will return later in the year with our dog, Angus McTavish, to enjoy the lovely (hopefully sunny) river walks.

Only had a 1 night stay, but found the site to be a reasonable standard.
On arrival, (which can't be before 12.Noon), we pulled in and parked where the signs said, up to the barrier where there was only enough room for 2 outfits, (we were 3rd in the queue, and more behind us).
The site facilities were of a good standard and were clean and tidy.
The location sold us this site, as we only wanted to spend some time in York.
It is located within easy walking of the city centre and has Indian, Chinese, pizza, fish & chips, Pubs, in fact everything you might want within a 5 min walk of the site so you wont be short of anything.
I would recommend the site and use again, but expect a bit of chaos on arrival.

Rowntree Caravan Club Park is everything you would expect from a Caravan Club site, the facilities are kept clean and tidy and closed for cleaning daily, even Christmas day. The site is situated about 5 or 10 minutes walk out of York along side the River Ouse. There is Rowntree Park along side the site with seats for you to rest after a nice walk along the river bank to the Millennium Bridge or further for the more energetic. There is a play area for the children and the park is well kept and maintained by the local council. York is a delight and for those of you who have never been it is a must, shops, museums, cafe' bars, restaurants and pubs that sell food are all in easy walking distance. I would recommend this site to any body, we are definitely going back.
