This site is well off the beaten track, but do not let that put you off, the staff are friendly and helpful, the toilets and showers where all very clean and cleaned at least three times a day to my knowledge, nearby there are plenty of things to do. Whitby, NYMR (Railway) Dalby forest drive, and in Pickering the is a museum called Beck Isle Museum, which is one of the best museums I have been in for a long while, Plenty of shops in Pickering ie Co-op, butchers and bakers and a flea market which sold all sorts of things. The only problem we found with the site was drainage as it got a bit boggy when it rained, but saying that is a bit unfair as most of Yorkshire was about to be flooded again (6/09/2008), the staff are a credit to Forest Holidays, and Forest Holiday its worth a 10 out of 10,
Nearly forgot. You get early morning visitors. Squirrels. They come in your tent and nick your food so keep it lock up.

Site, fantastic, management from forest holidays (not the site) not as good.
We booked this break ages ago, all confirmation received, no problem.
However the week before we went we were phoned to say the site had shut and all breaks cancelled, strange as we had family already there, so we phoned the site who simply said the site was wet, TENTS were cancelled as the main field was under 2inches of water, but caravans were all-weather pitches, even grass ones.
We were given the option of cancelling and having a refund, or go ahead, which we did, and were glad of it.
YES, the non-pitch area was very wet, but the grass pitches have a mesh under it, we were on hard standing.
Staff were all very friendly and helpful, shop was basic but always stocked.
Toilets, showers etc all very clean, cleaned at the same time every day so you knew it would be closed.
Copley brewery was close by and a magnificent pint (all made on the premises.)
Only downside to the site was the only chemical disposal point is a good trek from most areas of the site.
We will be returning.

To be fair the weather this summer hasn't been good for camping. We were given a pitch at the bottom of the site which after two days of rain turned into a mud bath. The site has no drainage under its standard pitches. For the cost, and price of extras like small gazebos and windbreaks, we expected better than a pitch in a muddy sloped field.
All that said, this year the facilities have been refurbished, and were very clean and very nice. The staff were friendly and helpful, The shop was a bit sparse but was well stocked on basics which is the main thing.
The sight is perfect for forest exploration and for astronomy study.
A sign post from in the village of Cropton would be helpful as I am sure many people make the same mistake as us and went to the sister site of Keldy Cabins instead.

I (Husband, 4 children and Brother and his family) have just come back from my first camping trip and found this site to be really nice.
Toilets and showers excellent and pot washing area really nice with a lowered sink for smaller people ie kids and wheelchair users I assume. The shop sells lots of useful things and reasonably priced too. Staff very nice although were in a bit of a tizz when we arrived as the electric had gone off in the shop. Standard pitches are quite uneaven and were very wet as there had been a very large storm the night before not great for a first timer. Site was great for families although the noise was minimal on an evening. Key Available for baby and parent room for a deposit of £5.00 which is refunded when you hand the key back.
I would definitely go again! oh take plenty of midgy repellant they are everywhere best buy were the repellant candles although my husband was midgy food for the the 2 nights we were there.

Booked a 5 night holiday on the net as this site had good recommendations. We paid for a premium pitch but this basically meant where you could reach a hook up point. We were shown a couple of spontaneous areas around the site, but having prebooked at many other sites, pitches are normally allocated and kept until arrival and as stated on Forest holidays web site, I would have expected a lot more from a premium pitch, ie hedging privacy, set areas etc and we had to clear loads of rubble before we pitched. This site is quite a good base for walks, especially for kids and dogs, but the allocated dog walk area is now a building site! There are plenty of showers, but make sure you don't get the last in line, as all of the hot water is taken and we had to have a cold shower the first day, however the rest of the week we knew where to go!
There is one hairdryer in the ladies shower area, but for 20p, I only managed to get half of my short hair dried, although this may be down to the manufacturer and not the campsite!
Had a great day on the steam engine to Goathlands and actually saw some filming taking place for Heartbeat. Another great day at Whitby, and a little walk around Malton and Pickering, and also York too!
The weather for the first few days was fantastic, but the rain on Thursday unfortunately caused us to leave earlier than expected, as the drainage onsite was the worst ever! We actually ended up sleeping on a water bed as the water was passing underneath our tent, luckily for us the main living and sleeping areas are all sown in, otherwise we would have been in inches of water. The problem was that the water from the makeshift hardcore roads came directly through our porch area, bringing with it thick sludge, so everything was ruined! Other tents in this area, also had the same problem.
We did have two lovely meals at The New Inn and The Coach House and a lovely Cantonese take away from Malton.
All in all, I don't think we would return to this site just yet, mainly due to the drainage situation, and poor organisation for so called 'premium pitches'. Although we always compare to other campsites and experiences!

We stayed at Spiers House as it's relatively close to Dalby Forest and the excellent mountain biking that has to offer. (Seriously, if you're a cyclist - DO NOT miss it!)
The site is in a nice location, only 10 mins from Pickering and only 2 minutes from Cropton Brewery! Tip: Sample a few of their beers and then take-away a 10 litre polypin!
The site facilities are excellent - clean toilets and showers and plenty of them - I never had to queue. There's also a family shower room which you can use if you pay the £5 deposit. Its worth it as you get a large room to yourself with its own toilet and shower - perfect for the whole family to trapes down for a shower! Washing up and laundry facilities are also excellent.
The site itself is very open with few trees within it, although there are trees on all sides. The hardstanding areas for the caravans and tents which required ECU looked very nice, albeit perhaps a little packed in. The majority of the tents were on the 'lower' side of the field. The problem with this tent area is that its not very flat so finding a pitch requires you to decide which way you want to be rolling in the night! ;-) There are enforced 6m gaps between pitches which is standard these days. Larger tents seemed welcome for no additional cost. Although there were no water taps on the lower fields, a mobile water truck was provided and rubbish bins were there and emptied every day. I didn't see any chemical waste disposal areas on the tent area which might be an issue for some although it's hardly a long walk around the site.
The biggest problem for us, however, were the midges! We were camped right near the woods at the edge of the field, but from what I heard, no-one was safe from them! From about 16:00, clouds of midges descended onto the camp and eat us all alive on the first night until we realised. But even after using repellents on the later nights, we still found that we couldn't sit outside after about 19:00.
The midges rather spoilt an otherwise very good site which is beautifully placed to take advantage of all the excellent cycling in that part of Yorkshire. Well recommended, but those with a fear of midges beware!

Just returned from our second visit to Spiers House.
I was quite nervous about our second visit after reading some bad reviews, but all was fine when we arrived.
The site was as good as last year, probably better if that is possible!
The facilities are fantastic, it doesnt matter what time of day you use them they are always clean.
The wardens are first class, nothing is a problem.
The setting speaks for itself, the walks are second to none.
It is the perfect site for families, our kids love it.
So rest assured, you wont be disappointed.

Stayed here for two nights unfortunatly the weather was not good, but most pitches are hard standing. Toilets and showers are fantastic, plenty of showers, toilets and privacy cubicles Staff were all very friendly, plenty of walks around the forest, great pub in croptom with really good food and you can take your dog in which is about a five minute drive away Would go back and hope for better weather

Wonderful site. Went on a very brief (2 night) stay with the eldest boy who is 4 for a bit of lads 'n' dads time together.
He slept on the journey but as we found the site and selected the pitch he soon woke up and was full of excitement. Really friendly couple who are there for help and advice. Good level pitch on the lower field where tents were fairly well spaced apart, backing onto some trees.
The facilities are good. A useful shop, with ice creams. Good playground. Great showers and toilets. And lots of space for running around (Leo, not me!). The forest walks take your breath away - they are gorgeous and of course right on your doorstep.
It was fairly busy, but we still felt as if we had loads of room.
We'll be back very soon.

Stayed here for 2 nights, 6th & 7th July, as our first family camping holiday. We specifically wanted our first experience to be as painless as possible so scoured all the reviews looking for just the right place. Spiers House didn't disappoint.
Booking service was a bit patchy, we didn't receive our written confirmation and 'hope you enjoy your holiday' until a week after we had returned home, but never mind. Also, as other reviewers have pointed out, it's not the best signposted site. Coming out of Cropton bear left. After viewing an aerial shot of the site on Google Earth I headed right, followed a road that would have taken me into the site, and almost drove into a motorbike rally that was taking place that day. Pity there hadn't been any signs notifying people that this was taking place.
On getting to the site we were given a choice of 2 pitches (really close to the toilet blocks / washing up area, perfect) which were both a bit bumpy. As one had a small gully running through the middle to channel rain water we took the other. Whilst the children (11 years, 6 years, and 17 months) watched from the car mother and I began erecting our new tent. Then it began to rain. Boy did it rain. Within minutes we were both completely soaked to the skin, but when you've started you can't stop. After about an hour and a half the damn thing was up. And the rain stopped.
They have a great laundry room which my OH made good use of to dry her clothes.
I rather foolishly was so desperate to get to the pub that I decided to wait, hoping a pint and a decent pub toilet for changing would suffice. We were all starving so had to bypass the New Inn at Cropton as they were no longer serving food (about 3:45 Sunday Afternoon). Not much joy in Pickering either, but we did find one place. Wish we hadn't. The Royal Oak. Seemed ok when we first went in. Beer was fine. Landlord was a right miserable sod. And the food? Cheap n nasty. Toilets were filthy. Back to Spiers House, and our first proper night under canvass.
The site itself is perfect for families. Very well laid out. Good signage for walks. Nice park for the children. The facilities are second to none. For all I'm a father of 3 in my late thirties I'm a bit of a wus. I was bothered about using 'not my own' toilets. I needn't have been. They were spotlessly clean. Good hot free showers as well.
The next day when we awoke in our mud bath we decided (after a lovely rainy walk through the forest), on the spur of the moment, to have a day in York. And what a fantastic day it was too. We parked at a park and ride at Grimston(?) and took the bus in. Lunched at the Old White Swan, one of the cleanest, nicest pubs we've ever been in as a family. Mooched around town for a while before going to the National Railway Museum. Great place to visit, and completely free, but you really need to spend the full day there as there's so much to see and do. Back to the campsite for our last night. Dined at the New Inn that evening, beer good, food even better (unfortunately not as good as the Old White Swan, had we not been there that afternoon the New Inn would certainly receive a full 5 stars). More rain back at the tent.
Good breakfast of bacon beans n sausages outside the tent the following morning, no rain! Tent took down, cheery goodbyes said (what a friendly bunch the camping fraternity are) and home we went.
Highlight? The site itself and it's wonderful facilities? The forest walks? The day out in York? No. It was our smallest, Heidi, discovering for the first time the joy of plodging in puddles. Overall Spiers House was a hit with us, despite the conditions. We would certainly consider going again, but for longer next time.
