On the plus side, the location of this site is beautiful, in the heart of North Yorkshire, not too far from the coast. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We would highly recommend the food from the fish n chip van that visits on a Monday evening. There are lots of easy to follow walks and cycle tracks for all abilities. We cycled to Rosedale Abbey.
On the negative side, the toilets and showers were dirty and frequently flooded, the site is very, very large and the single block of facilities seemed unable to cope with the amount of people using it. Blocked sinks / toilets and showers 2-3 inches deep in dirty water was a big turn off. The rubbish bins were not emptied frequently enough and were overflowing and attracting wasps.
The site was overcrowded, pitches are very close together, they seem to slot a tent in where ever there is a scrap of spare grass.
The children were also very disappointed with the play area, there was very little equipment to play on (1 swing and a few logs) not even a grassed area for our footy fanatic.
Overall we had a good holiday, mainly because the weather was kind and we did lots of walking and cycling and getting out and about, We went on Go ape in Dalby Forest. Fantastic, but we will not be returning for a second visit.

Stayed for the weekend, shop on site and staff very helpful, no mobile phone signal and public phone did not take money. Facilities were good and kept clean and tidy could do with more.
Good forest walks which we took advantage of as we took our two dogs.
Directions from the main road none existent only signs for the log cabins so found it difficult to find, in brochure reads 160 pitches which is very misleading maybe 160 caravan/motorhome pitches there must have been 200 or 300 tents also, there were far too many people on site.
I think if they added another toilet block say at the bottom of the hill may ease the distance some campers/caravanners have to walk as there was a constant flow of people walking up and down both day and night and as the weather was not the best they were getting soaked.

Having just stayed from Monday to Friday in a tent, there are good and bad points about the site. We picked a premium pitch as we were staying with family who have a caravan we found the premium pitches were very close together compared to the tent field. Even though the site was full it was still quiet apart from dogs barking at daft o clock and its in a very good location.
We found the bins were only emptied once all week and were over flowing when we left. We found the female showers where clean when we arrived but by Wednesday they was getting grotty and by Thursday they were flooded and some of the private sink cubicles where blocked and no soap and toilet roll. We think the site really need a extra toilet/shower block for the size of the site.
The staff where very friendly and on a plus the chip van was very nice

This is a lovely site. It has a nice relaxed atmosphere unlike many of the C.C.C sites we have previously stayed on. We had no problems with midges as stated in other reviews (which I had read about prior to our stay and worried about right up until our 1st night on the site was over).
The pitches were sloping but its all part and parcel of camping. - when I say sloping - it would be useless for sledging in winter.
The shower block in my opinion could have been maintained a little better. Out of 8 showers in the ladies block, one was out of action completely and was locked from the inside. Two other showers flooded once in use and in my opinion to be ankle deep in somebody elses washing water is not pleasant.
There was also a sink in one of the private sink cubicles that was blocked and full of water for the 4 nights we were there so considering they were cleaned daily I do not see a reason for these issues to have occured especially in peak season. The mens according to my other half did not have these problems.
The only other issue we had with this site was that the bins were not emptied frequently enough. We worked out that the hoppers on site were only emptied once a week which given the size of the site is ridiculous. So consequently the hoppers were overflowing with bin bags until bin day - so the advice is. Do not pitch by a bin.
On the whole despite those two gripes we will definitely be returning to this site. At the end of the day, no site is perfect and the two issues didn't ruin our holiday. On the plus side, we found the staff to be friendly and helpful.
The possibility of pastries and pizza on site were temping but never had the chance to sample as with the chip van - although I'm presuming the chips must be good as when we drove past it there was quite a queue!
The site is within easy drive of most of the attractions. I.E Whitby, Scarborough, the moors etc. There are walks available on site and the possibility to hire bikes. If I am honest we did not have the time to make full use of the facilities available but have ear marked them for next time!
The actual pitches were clean and tidy, the grass short with no mud patches or puddles- what more could you ask for??.Hmm.I guess no slope - if you want to be really fussy about it.
The coop in Pickering appears to be the closest shop for food although the shop on site does sell some basic items. We discovered a lovely Chinese restaurant (also do takeaway) in Pickering called 'Fortune Inn' well worth a visit if you fancy a night off from cooking (about 15mins drive from the site).

Loved the location and the forest was beautiful but when we got there we found some tents had pitched on caravan areas and were using hook-ups which were meant for the caravans,a lot of caravans ended up on slopping grass!
There was plenty of toilets and showers with constant hot water but not as clean as I expected from a caravan and camping club.
The staff were friendly and we met some nice people, I would go back to the site but next time I would book a hard standing pitch.

Well this was our first tent camping trip (had previously had a folding camper) and our first try at non Haven/entertainment sites with the 3 kids.
What a fantastic site! The walks were fab and easy to navigate. Hired bikes for a day too and did a couple of the 'short' 4 mile bike runs.
The site settles down at 10:30pm as the others have said, which encouraged our kids to go to bed. Toilets were nice and pretty clean most of the time. Tended to run out of loo roll by 9am though. Playground was in the forest next to the site. Kids thought this was great, although there didn't seem to be much to occupy them.

I stayed at Spiers House in early July 2010, with husband and two children, staying Monday- Monday. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, campsite was well off the road and was lovely and quiet through the week. The site was silent at night, with the tents pitched far apart and giving a sense of privacy. The site seemed safe for children too, and we didn't mind our older child cycling around.
The stardard pitch area was big, bordered by trees, but this area is on a slope and we struggled to find somewhere flatter to pitch the tent. In the end we just pitched up and learned to live it. But it seemed to be well drained, and after a spectacular thunderstorm, and night of continual heavy rain, the area around the pitch was fine.
The site was clean and tidy. The children's play area seemed designed for kids older than ours, but it didn't matter as our kids played outside the tent mainly, and the play area was in the trees and full of midgies. The shop had the basics, made their own pizzas, and at the weekend a fish and chip van came to the site.
The toilet/shower block was fine. Inevitably showers get muddy, but a mop was available for each person to wipe over their shower after use. One thing I would advise is take toilet paper, as there was sometimes none in the ladies, apparently the gents was fine. And at the weekend, the facilities seemed to struggle a bit with the numbers, so I would advise getting there early.
One tip is if you don't want to be too far from the toilet block, camp at the top of the hill or upgrade your pitch. We had quite a trek uphill, the site could benefit from having toilets at the bottom of the site.
The only downside of the whole week was on the Friday, when the site got much, much busier. Although this did give the site a nice vibrant atmospeh, and we worried less about keeping our kids quiet, the noise levels of some guests playing football went on way past 12 midnight, with no regard for fellow campers. This happened again on the Saturday night too. Luckily our kids slept through it.
Pickering, Scarborough, Whitby & York were all easily accessible, York has a handy Park n Ride at Monks Cross. And FlamingoLand only a couple of miles away. We didn't get to Cropton Brewery, but the Forest Retreat sold its beer, so we made do with that instead.
I would certainly recommend Spiers House.

Stayed here for 4 nights in July 2010 in a tent with EHU. Great campsite, good mix of tent and caravans/motorhomes, very clean facilities, great little shop that did takeaway coffee & tea, pizza, sausages rolls, etc. Plus all the basics and plenty of camping equipment, friendly wardens that couldn't do enough for you.
Our first 2 nights the weather was really awful, rain, wind, thunder, lightning, the lot! But the warden was still out and about in the rain making sure everyone was ok! The third (Fri) saw the arrival of many weekend campers and during the day the site had a lovely atmosphere, there were a couple of groups who were very noisy and partying late - however one group were seen off the campsite next morning and another given a warning which did the trick as no noise the following night.
Lovely location within the forest with forest walks, nice playpark for the kids, and a lovely base for travelling about Yorkshire, we spent a day in Scarborough and a day in York, both accessible in less than 45 mins. Nice campsite would recommend!

We have camped & also done caravanning at spiers House. Caravanning was the better experience the site with a dedicated pitch area, we had a fairly level spot but there is a few pitches sloping where chocks & blocks of wood have to be used to create a level pitch
The toilet and shower block is kept fairly clean and tidy, there is about 8 showers & toilets and 4 wash cubicles in the ladies as far as I know this is the same for the gents, (did run out of toilet rolls while camping on the Saturday night so there were none for the morning and there are not cleaned and refilled until 1.30pm).
We were not too far away from the shower block & water tap but if your down at the bottom it could be quite a trek depending on your pitch type I think you could have one with water and drainage for grey water on your pitch but it will depend on the price you want to pay per night. We were just on a hard standing, which the price was quite reasonable.
Camping (without Electric) if your after a dedicated pitch area then this isn`t the site for you, your told anywhere there is a space on the field on the right hand side and you need to be 6 mtrs away from the next tent, so you may struggle depending what time you get there if you have a larger tent. We made do with area that was sloping in 2 different direction as we were only camping for the weekend.
The campsite is good with been situated in cropton forest for walks & biking, the reason we were camping there, it has bike hire & forest rangers activities which is good for the kids
We saw a party trundling off into the woods with the bags to collect items. The shop is well stocked with fresh bread and milk and they even make pizza to order. Our camping trip was spoilt by some other individuals who had no respect for other campers & their tent and cars but you can`t blame the site for this.
Overall out of the two experiences would be the caravanning one, so we`ll be visiting with caravan next time.

Spent two weeks on this site and watched many people come and go. Its the perfect place to stop and visit the nearby attractions like Daly Forest with your mountain bikes or just a really good walk.
When we arrived the staff are very helpful although their booking in system and shop till seem sometime to hinder them and the site was very busy. Once booked in its a case of driving round and picking your spot.
I mainly used my caravan facilities but when I did go to the toilet block there never seemed to be any toilet paper no matter what time you went and this was also the case in the mens block. We thought that the one block was not sufficient for the amount of people on site and that another block near the tents would be nice.
The shop is also very inconsistent with what baked goods it sells (and this could be a little gem), one day you have to be there for 8.10am for hot bread and the next its only just going in the oven and you have to come back in 45min.
We loved the peace of the site and the boys loved playing in the woods and streams, also there are some great walks and cycle rides with the hire of bikes very reasonable. Dog owners beware of all the ticks. Take some removers with you.
However the few days before we left the bins were rather overflowing and it made this site very unpleasant and sadly we added to this when we left.
A must is a visit on the steam train at Pickering and a visit to Eden camp.
Although a quiet site the boys got back to playing in the woods and want to go back next year and although I would not like to see this site commercialised its is a small gem that needs a few things to make it shine.
