Nice relaxing site, staff great. Showers & toilets fine, the shop had the bare essentials, nice big pitches, the scenery is beautiful, playground basic, but when you're in a forest you don't really need one. The only slight negative aspects were the slight slope,(Nature likes to do it's own thing) And the forest walks tended to be along rough roads more than forest trails. The scenery whilst going to the toilet on a clear moonlit night is worth a visit on its own.

Great facilities, superb location, useful adventure playground for kids, showers always hot, site not too noisy. The signposted walks/cycle rides are a great idea for passing some time and there seemed to be some fun events for children too. However, despite mosquito coils, citronella candles and repelllent on skin have got bitten to death by midges which has really spoiled the whole experience. Pickering was the nearest town, but you're only about 20 miles from Whitby (the best seaside place ever!), not too far either from Heartbeat territory if you're a fan, and there's always the North Yorkshire Moors railway for a rainy day. Equally, not too far from Flamingo Land and Castle Howard. If you go don't forget to visit Thornton le Dale, one of the prettiest villages in Yorkshire, with a beck running through it and a wonderful chocolate shop.

We went here for our honeymoon and it was our first time camping so had no idea what to expect. It was lovely, staff friendly and helpful. Site was clean, well kept and we had a lovely shaded spot near to the woods. Not a long walk to showers and toilets, which were lovely and clean. Guided walks in the woods were good fun. We would like to go again and take the kids as it felt safe there and i'm sure our children would love it there.

OK, this was our first camping trip as a family. We've recently returned to the UK after 3 years living in Madrid, and thought it would be a great idea to invest in a tent and all the gear necessary for short UK breaks. We chose Spiers House after reading the reviews on this site, and a great choice it was too! We booked on-line, and paid in advance via cheque. We were expected when we arrived, and shown to our pitch - with EHU, and amongst other large frame tents. The staff advised us where to put the tent up, as they are pretty strict about distances from each other. One minor complaint is that there is a slight incline on the site - OK for levelling caravans, but makes for an interesting night in sleeping bags under canvas! Toilets / showers were clean and tidy - never a queue, even though the site was pretty full. Only 3 washing up sinks though, meaning usually quite a few people in front waiting. Small shop selling basics. The site is dog heaven! Our mutt loved it, and is still sleeping now after all the forest walks we took her on! Only real downside is - as others have pointed out - the midges! As evening sets in, they descend and munch away at any exposed skin! I;m itching just thinking about them, but it doesn't detract from what is a great site, in a superb location!

Camped on this site at the Last bank holiday and found it to be great. Staff were help full and very accommodating. Lovely site set in woods. The earlier poster stated the toilets/shower block could be a long walk but we where on the edge of the site and can't believe the walk could be long from anywhere. Well recommend this site

We visited Easter weekend and found the site organised and the staff very helpful. The ground was soft and we immediately got stuck in our original pitch we flagged down a member of staff who pulled us out and found us a hardstanding. Make sure that you take levelling blocks as the pitches were very sloped. The showers were fairly powerful and warm but the building was a bit chilly, toilets and showers were very clean. Freshwater taps/wastewater points were plentiful and the forest walks were amazing - our dog has slept for pretty much 2 days since we returned she had such a good time. The site shop is has a very small selection so make sure you take most of your food although there is a Londis about 10 mins down the road towards Pickering. There is a big co-op in Pickering but the traffic was horrible (I don't know if this is in general or just because it was bank hol weekend). The car park outside the co-op was very busy but there is another car park about 5 mins walk away which was quiet and our motorhome was parked easily (turn right at the lights then first left). The site had a very safe feel to it and my daughter made lots of friends on the park. If you are camping without ehu bear in mind that this is a large site with only one toilet block and some of the pitches are quite a long way from the block, others are very close so if this is important to you (ie if you have small children) you may want to mention this when you book. It is advertised as being very dog friendly and as a result of this I would say that most people had dogs but I didn't notice and noise overnight and there were only bits of barking during the day so don't let this put you off. I would love to return and only wish that it was nearer for us.

What a wonderful site this is! Our first camping trip so we weren't sure what to expect. We found a shaded slightly sloping spot but not where we were originally placed as we forgot the hook up. The staff were very friendly when booking over the phone and when we arrived. The showers blocks , toilets and wash up facilities were spotlessly clean. The site was well kept and the grass was cut having fairly flat spots for tents and shade porvided by the trees. The guided walks around the forest were usueful and you can judge how energetic you feel and how far you wish to walk. Pickering is a gorgeous town and we are hoping to stay at the site next year

A very quiet site with basic facilities but always clean, even when the site was full at the weekend. Lovely woodland walks from the site and easy distance from lots of local attractions.
Shop stocks most of the basics and more but has limited opening hours.
A recommended site; we would definitely use it again!

Wonderful site, located close to Pickering. There is a lovely drive through to the trees to the campsite. When we arrived the staff were very friendly and helpful. There are a number of walks available directly from the campsite, excellent for us with our 2 dogs. Showers and toilets were always kept immaculate and there was plenty of hot water, although just check how long the shower lasts for before you get in it – some go for about 20 seconds, but the first one I got in literally went off as soon as you pressed it! Nearby Pickering is a lovely little town with pretty much everything you could need! There is a butcher, plenty of bakers, greengrocers, an outdoor store, TIC and a fair sized Co Op. We also would recommend a pizza from Chico’s Pizzeria in Pickering, we got 2 on our last night and it was lovely! Overall, a brilliant site with very friendly, helpful staff. An open plan ‘pitch where you like’ style camping field but this didn’t pose any problems. Would definitely visit again, Forest Holidays always offer excellent sites.

Just had a long weekend at this site and was very impressed with the location. It was great for cycling and walking through the forest which surrounds the site. The only gripe (all be it a small one) is that all the water taps are push operated, which makes having a shower an entertaining event to say the least. (Have to hold in button with one hand and wash with other) Also approach road through Cropton VERY tight. This said I will be back for a longer stay next time. A++++++
