Booked for a 2 night stay in June due to it's location for ease of travel to Whitby or Scarborough for a day out.
Lovely site right in the middle of the forest so don't expect your phone to work out here!
Paid £56 for 2 nights (Friday & Saturday) which was for a standard tent pitch (no EHU) for 2 adults, 1 child and a dog.
Staff on site very friendly and helpful and was quick to get checked in and pitched. The freedom to pitch anywhere you like is good but you are reliant on other campers acknowledging normal rules of distance between tents. It was on the Saturday afternoon when we returned from Whitby that we found ourselves literally surrounded!
Handy shop on site that sells the basics, even has draught beer available. Showers and toilets are clean and never appeared to be full. Fish and Chip van comes on Friday & Saturday nights (possibly Sunday as well I think) and the local newsagent comes to sell bits on a morning.
If it's a quiet site you are after then this perhaps isn't the one for you as it was very busy (and a bit noisy) on the Saturday which was probably in part due to it being a bank holiday.
Word of warning: Take insect repellent due to the amount of midgies there and citronella candles for the tent are a must.
All in all a pleasant stay but would probably look for somewhere a bit quieter next time.

Visited for a weekend on a premium tent pitch in mid May after some very wet weather. We expected the ground to be wet and it was, in fact you could hear running water on some of the pitches. Luckily it was fairly quiet so we found a dryish spot. Probably half of the non-electric field was unusable as it was standing in water in places. We also saw cars struggling to get on and off the grass at times.
As it was quiet there was plenty of room for the kids to play football away from other campers. The surrounding forest is brilliant for paddling, den building, walking or cycling and kids would never be bored. I suspect that when the site is full it can get quite crowded and there isnt a designated area for ball games - and we didn't find a play area.
There are ample showers, toilets and washing up facilities and these were spotless and warm.
Overall this is a nice site with a safe, family friendly feel. My husband had an issue with the number of dogs on site, nearly every unit seemed to have at least one dog and although they were generally kept under control there was a fair bit of barking at times.
The staff were very friendly and you got the feeling nothing would be too much trouble. The shop was OK, just a few basics, but you arent far from Pickering. The local newsagent visited each day with newspapers and magazines which was a great idea.
The biggest downfall was the price. £56. 40 for two nights at this time of year was too much and I suspect this is why it sometimes get bad reviews. I just couldn't see how they justified charging so much. That is the only reason I wouldn't rush to go back.

We have just stayed here for 6 nights what a great clean place. The staff were very helpful the toilets and showers were very clean. The walks and bike rides in the forest were out of this world, there is just miles of tracks to follow or a stroll through the woods which was great. We all loved it that much the day we came home we booked to go back in August. We did get a visit on a morning from the squirrels so make sure your food is locked up! All other visitors was very friendly lots of space between pitches.

Just got back from a very enjoyable three night Easter break at Spiers house. The site is located in an opening within the forest and has a mixture of tents, caravans and really nice looking log cabins, we arrived just after a late heavy April snowfall which had pretty much destroyed some caravan awnings and flattened some tents, not what you'd expect in April!. The hard standings are a good size with fresh water & drainage points, the lower grass field seemed to be pretty boggy due to the amount of water from the melted snow so it could be a bit grim under canvas if there were lots of rain. The route in from the A64 Malton/Pickering is good with no tight roads or steep hills, the route in from thirsk is more difficult as there is a diversion for caravans to avoid sutton bank which is a monster of a hill. All in all a very good site which we will be booking again

Absolutely brilliant!
We have stayed here before and have always been welcomed. This time was no exception. Arrived at 12 noon to be told that, as the site was virtually empty, we could pick a fully serviced pitch, at no extra cost. Having set up, we went for a walk and then browsed round the shop to find it was still well stocked, even in January. Our dog was made very welcome with gravy bones and several runs with the warden's dog. The staff were very informative about local amenities and we learnt more about the birds and forest life.
The facilities were excellent. Minus 4 overnight but the toilet block was pleasantly warm, showers hot and everything in working order.
Having enjoyed a great weekend, we asked if we could stay on for a couple of hours instead of leaving at 12. No problem, the staff were really encouraging and we didn't leave till 2. 30 after a great chat with one of the staff.
Already booked again for March, no hesitation

Took the dogs for bonfire night weekend to avoid all the fireworks round our way. Friendly staff, very clean and warm toilet/shower block and great shop ( wine a little expensive but that's all). Hot drinks made to order. In middle of forest so if not taking motorhome out for day then you could be stuck. Previous review said pub a mile away but that through the forest and in summer. In Nov we were advised not to try it which means 2. 5 mls down really busy lane with no footpaths and with two dogs we had to give up half way as too dangerous. If you want newspapers then they are about 4 miles away. Car rally on in forest on Sunday which made good viewing. Would definitely return ( but in dry warm weather so we could walk to pub through forest) as fab site and dogs loved it. Also got lodges which looked great from outside and fish and chip van comes on Fri night

Stayed here for the Pickering war weekend and on arrival we were greeted at reception and given a map of the site. As we booked a premium pitch with hard standing and hook up we had no issues with choosing a pitch.
The showers and toilets are clean and well maintained, showers are hot and always available. Although we did not use the shop on camp it appeared to be well stocked and had hot food that could be ordered for breakfast if you didn't want to cook your own.
It has been mentioned in previous reviews that the shop was overpriced but on looking at the prices they are pretty much the same as any supermarket.
If you are reliant on your mobile phone then this may be an issue as we had no signal at all(orange network) but then the site is in the middle of a forest! Not really a huge issue for us personally as we spent most of our days down in Pickering.
Would recommend staying here again as it is lovely and peaceful and I am sure of you were to make use of all the facilities offered then you would have a fantastic holiday.

If you are keen on walking or cycling the waymarked forest trails be sure you are good at map reading and ideally have gps. The map handout at reception with the trails marked bears little relation to what you find on the ground, and the waymarking itself is inadequate, with perhaps a quarter of the marks necessary. It appears almost random whether paths are marked or not, or whether the path on the map actually goes where it says. Major intersections go unmarked. Paths may be marked only on the exit indicating direction of continuation, so you will miss ways in. It's chaos that needs sorting out.
The smell in the toilet block is indeed odd and subtly unpleasant!
Plus points: I had a sensationally good pint at the Inn in Cropton Village, which seems to specialise in real ales.
The whole N York Moors area is stunning.
I stayed here on the first day of the low season so the price was not excessive but otherwise the pricing structure is labyrinthine and too high.

Stayed here over the August Bank Hols, site in a super location and was easy enough to find.
We had booked a 'standard' pitch and were told to try the far end of this field for some of the more level pitches but to drive slowly as parts were quite boggy. Indeed they were. Our car got stuck but luckily some friendly fellow campers pushed us out, not a great start! We could pitch where we wanted which was handy as we went with another family, and the standard tent field felt large enough that we weren't on top of one another.
Like mentioned previously there is no playground there at present which we didn't find a problem with our 3 yr old and his friend as they made their own enjoyment as kids do!
The site also has a shop which is a bit of a bakery too selling pastries etc as well as essentials and is open most of the day. There is also a 'bar' which is a counter top inside the bike hire hut. We didn't use it but others were sitting outside enjoying a pint (there is no seating area inside).
Showers/toilets. Clean enough however the floor tended to get muddy/dirty of shoes, and a mop was provided to clean up but the water in it was dirty too so not ideal.
I did encounter a queue at around 9am and had a wait of around 10 mins before it was my turn. I must point out the worst part of the loo block is the smell. Not great! They used recycled rainwater to flush toilets which is a good idea however the smell was that similar to a stink bomb/rotten eggs so I am not sure if there was a problem with their filter system. Be warned!
We went on a couple of the signed walks through the forests which was lovely and also drove into Whitby which was around a 40 minute drive. Pickering looked to be a nice little village too although we only drove through, but seemed to have a good selection of shops, pubs etc to visit during a stay.
All in all, we had a good time and the site met our needs but we felt overall could be managed slightly better.

Friendly and clean campsite, with all you need for a great break. All basic facilities - including washing and tumble drier.
Shop with all the essential stuff you might need. Showers have controllable temperature which is a bonus- showers were clean and warm.
Some great bike trails from the site (you can hire bikes here, and also good for walking and exploring the forest.
Also includes an off licence for local beer (cropston) and some bunny rabbits for the children to meet. We had a great 5 night stay.
