One of the best has just got better - there's extra facilities for washing up, the toilet blocks have been refurbished and the introduction of hard standings and premium areas almost induced caravan envy in a die hard tenter like me!
Spiers House will always score highly for it's location in the forest and for the excellent work the much under publicised forrestry commision has done with walking and mountain bike trails nearby, not to mention the kids play area, ranger activities and first rate staff. Lack of proximity to pubs also puts it high up on my ratings since there's none of that post-pub revelry so prevalent on many sites.
All in all Spiers House is probably one of the most perfect sites for old and new family campers alike.

Attended camp site after reading your reviews.
Not a lot I can say that already has been said.
Staff A1++
Canp site very clean and maintained to a high standard
Location A1
Toilets/ showers etc I could not find fault at any time
They did not mind my DDB (Hooch)on site and kept a sly eye on All dogs on site (A1) after all little dogs bite and mess as well.
I mentioned the reviews to staff and when I mentioned the 3 pot wash sinks they showed me the new 9 sinks that have been put in, they were pleased and said thank you all for the pos/ write ups, will I go again I cannot wait.
Note the New Inn is dog friendly (must be well behaved) they serve some great food and try their own beers the blackout is magic.

Just spent a fabulous bank holiday week-end at this peaceful site. On arrival it was raining hard and due to previous heavy downpours, the camping field was quite boggy. However, the staff were extremely helpful and sorted a suitable pitch for us. They pulled the camper into position and even brought a bucket of water and washed the mud off. The facilities are excellent. Hot showers - free! The shower and toilet block were clean at all times, despite the site being full and I never had to queue. The surrounding woods were a delight to walk through and offered walks for all - anything from a stroll to a long hike. There is a shop on site where you can get the basics. Although the site was full we did not feel crowded as there is plenty of space between pitches and the camping field is very large. Overall, a lovely site with friendly helpful staff. Very quiet and peaceful. Can not wait to return.

Having visited Spiers House campsite in Cropton Forrest, Pickering for some 6 years now I am always amazed what a great site this is. Set in the great surroundings of Cropton Forrest you can really feel you are one with nature. Being woken up in the morning by the sounds of forest animals which can regularly been seen from pheasants, deer, rabbits and the odd glow worm just to mention a few.
The site has just gone through a major make over with new hard standing spaces for caravans and a new area designated to tents. All the toilets and washing up areas have been overhauled and are of the highest quality. They are very clean and warm with shaver points and hair dryer availability.
The re-developed site opened on the 1st May this year. There had been a lot of rain the week before so cars were not allowed in the area used by the tents. The staff did use buggies to bring all your equipment to your pitch for you. As always you are allowed to choose your own pitch as well on arrival. The staff at this site are the most helpful and friendly that I have come across.
Once pitched you have an endless area of activities to undertake in the area. There are of course the numerous walks in the forest which have marked routes for all abilities. You can also cycle through the forest and onto the North York Moors. Pickering the nearest market town is only 15 minutes from the campsite with a market in the high street on Monday. It has a Co-Op supermarket and array of other shops such as delicatessens and bakeries not to mention great coffee shops to relax in. Pickering has a medieval church with some very rare medieval fresco well worth the visit. There is of course the famous North York Moor steam train that goes from Pickering all the way to Whitby. You can of course go by road to both Whitby and Robin Hoods bay as well as Dolby Forrest which as a great tea shop at the form house were you sit in the front garden to enjoy the many nice things on offer to eat.

Just back from our second visit to this lovely site. It's spacious, with clean facilities and helpful staff. We like the fact that non EHU tents don't have marked pitches - you have the freedom to choose your own spot. There is a 6 metre rule which meant that even over the busy bank holiday weekend, you didn't feel hemmed in and the site didn't feel too overcrowded. The adventure playground was brilliant for our children, and we also enjoyed doing the forest walks. This site is great for exploring the delights of North Yorkshire - our family particularly enjoyed the nearby Dalby Forest (which does have an entry charge for cars). There are also walks, cycle trails and orienteering available on site. If we had a gripe, it would be that 3 washing up sinks is definitely not enough for the size of the site (certainly not over the bank holiday weekend) and there was always a queue. Otherwise, we would heartily recommend this site, and we will be returning to it.

I stayed for 4 nights with my wife and 7-year-old daughter. There is a choice of fields for tents, with plenty of room. Most of the site is gently sloping, and recent rain had left a few damp patches - because of this we took our time finding a good pitch, although it wasn't really a problem.
The site feels very safe, and my daughter enjoyed riding her bike to the shop, and around the site meeting other children. At no point did I feel worried about her safety.
The site was fairly quiet when we arrived on Wednesday, but filled up towards the weekend. Although the 'site full' signs were up from Friday evening, there was still a very spacious feel. The only problem was the queues for washing up, as there are only 3 sinks.
This summer has been very wet, and I understand that parts of the campsite had recently been under water. Despite this, there was no mud on any of the camping areas, even after heavy overnight rain on our second evening.
The toilets and showers were spacious, with free hot water at decent pressure. There are also plenty of shaver points. Although the toilets occasionally became a bit grubby, they were soon cleaned by the efficient site staff.
A map is available showing different walks and cycle trails through the forest - these are also clearly signposted throughout. We took the opportunity to go on a guided walk (£3 for adults, kids free) with a forest Ranger, which was very enjoyable and informative. The Ranger clearly enjoyed his subject, and explained many aspects of forestry and the way it interacts with the natural environment. The excellent Moorsbus service comes into the campsite a few times a day, but unfortunately I wasn't aware of anyone other than my family using it while we were there. Our driver said very few campers ever use it. I found this strange, as the Moorsbus was one reason that I chose this site.
There are pubs about 2 miles away, in either Cropton, Lastingham or Hartoft. I cycled to Hartoft for a couple of pints one afternoon. I do know that all of the local pubs serve good ale and good food.
We did have a problem with a large, noisy group in an adjacent tent on Friday evening - I think they may not have realised that it was 11.10pm. Having said this, they did make efforts to quieten down when I asked them, and there were no further problems.
All in all, we had a very enjoyable stay and we will definitely return.

Hidden in the forest so look out for midges!
This site is very clean and my only criticism would be that for a site of this size, the facilities are too few. Toilets and washbasins OK, but no-one likes to queue for washing-up and showers, but that seemed an everyday occurence at Spiers House. Shop doesn't open until 9am which is a bit late if you need breakfast supplies (we did).
Good place to base yourself if wanting to see the Yorkshire coast, the North Yorksire Moors, the Hogsmeade station (Goathland) or York itself.

What a fantastic site, certainly the best we have visited for a long time. The facilities are spotless at all times. Park wardens are fantastic, nothing is too much trouble for them. I read the reviews before we went and took plenty of insect repellant, so no problem from our little flying friends. Highly recomended site. We are going again in september it is that good. The surrounding area speaks for itself, go and enjoy one of the most scenic areas in the country.

Just got back from this campsite. Had a lovely stay, the facilities are great, clean and not far from any of the pitches. Even though it was full over the weekend, there was plenty of space and it didn't feel crowded. They don't allocate specific pitches and this works really well as they obviously don't overbook. We did have to queue for the washing up facilities. Just wanted to say that the midges were really bad; clouds of them! There is stuff in the shop but if midges bother you then get some stuff before you go!

This site is superb! Not had the chance to go this year but would be there today given the chance. Peaceful, fabulous location, facilities good, friendly staff, lovely pubs around. (New Inn Cropton 1.5 miles, good food, good beer, friendly locals). Lots to do and see (North York Moors Railway's brilliant) Scarborough, Whitby not too far, Heartbeat Country. Don't expect to use your mobile (too remote, signal ok up the fire escape at New Inn). Fab walking, deer, jays and chaffinches sharing your breakfast. Those without kids try and go out of school holidays. The Moorcock pub at Langdale End is out of another era (opens 6pm).The drive from Stape to Goathland. Dalby Forest. Pickering Castle. Thornton Dale. Lovely. All of it.
