We had visited this site a few years previously and thought we'd try it again.

The welcome at the reception was just ok not as friendly as we had remembered from years ago. The prices we thought were very expensive we paid £20.50 for 1 night (plus our Labradors) and the administration fee of £1.50 we paid because we stayed for one night only initially we felt was unjustified.

The 2 wardens we met who guide you to your pitches were very good very polite and a pleasure to deal with A PLUS FOR THIS SITE IN OUR OPINION WORTH THEIR WEIGHT IN GOLD

The Cropton brewery is worth a visit but don't drink and drive and walking there is possible via the roads but we felt unsafe walking on the roads.

The surrounding area is forestry for miles and some very long walks which are sign posted. There is not a lot in this area and even the Cropton brewery to walk to is on the road which we felt not too safe - not enough kerbs etc.

The pitches- we were a bit shocked as had read that the site has been upgraded but we found the grassed areas very unkempt and patchy and bald in places.

The whole site seems to have been designated more for caravans now in terms of area capacity where you can pitch your tent.

My wife when we arrived home thought she had chicken pox she was so covered in bites all over her face and she applied coatings of Autan insect repellent throughout the day, we also lit the bbq several times and used incense sticks. I escaped the bites luckily.

The facilities ie showers were looking very good

In addition, the large group of people around us we found really loud did not make it the chill out stay we had hoped for.

Visted this site middle of June for a weekend, not signed from the main road, so it took a little time to find. Once found warm welcome, and quickly shown our pitch.

Busy weeekend for the site, but the shower / toilet facities were always clean and kept tidy. The ground / pitches were uneven but not a major problem

Fantastic walks in the surrounding forest, great for dogs ours enjoyed lots of new and fresh smells. Midgies were about but as long as you had candles burning they were kept at bay.

Definately go again as there is lot more to see, visited Pickering nearest small town very nice and friendly people. Went up to Whitby and Robins Hood bay, great places.

This is a great site in terms of facilities, staff (especially Sue) and its lovely setting, and the kids had a ball playing in the woods and on the playground.

The newly refurbished toilet block is much better than it was last year, and still kept as clean, although not enough information is provided about their excellent family shower room - there's not even a sign on the door to tell you it's there. There aren't any babychange facilities in the main toilets/showers so until I asked I wasn't aware there were any. I didn't ask about disabled facilities (though I made an assumption the other unsigned door probably contained it) and it would be handy if there was the option of a bath for people with special needs.

Negatives are that most of the tent pitches are on a slope so there was a bit of rolling around the tent in the night. There were a significant number of midges, enough to spoil the afternoons/evenings. My husband is covered in bites despite the insect spray, and the kids found them very difficult to deal with - in their ears, eyes, noses etc. Nothing much to do in Cropton, but Dalby Forest was a brilliant place to spend a day out.

Our second visit this year and will not be our last! A great deal of work has been done both improving and updating this site set in the middle of the forest. The results are obvious and when the grass recovers it will be a real gem.

Helpful friendly wardens and the local pub brews its own beer!

Dog walking, perfect in the forest on your doorstep.

Perfect for a quiet break or a base for exploring the surrounding area, return after 10pm and you leave your car in the designated car park so you do not disturb your fellow campers.

I have been caravanning for 28 years as far a field as Cornwall and Scotland, only now am I discovering the beauties of Gods county!

Have just returned fom the site. It is very peaceful and set in the middle of marvellous walks in the woods. There is considerable activity in the improvement of the site which is obviously noisy and short term.

The modernised toilet block is very good and clean, It is placed to favour the EHP clients, The tent field is a long treck for a full bladder. The site is sloping so choosing your site can be a lottery.

Currently a good site and looks as though it will be a brilliant one when the work is done.

We recently visited this site with 2 other families for the bank holiday weekend. We booked quite early but were still told we could not reserve a pitch and as we were only able to arrive on the Saturday lunchtime we had no choices of pitch. Our 2 friends were both at different parts of the site. The first pitch were were offered was sloping in 2 directions and totally unsuitable for our tunnel tent. Eventually we were told we could pitch on a flatter piece of ground which was literally a tractor tyred muddy piece of land not at all suitable as there were craters underfoot which were quite dangerous. This though was the best of the 2 pitches so we took it. It was not a cheap site and we paid £85 for 3 nights for a so called premium pitch!

The nearest water supply was a good walk away but the toilet block was probably one of the best we have experienced. It seems a shame that our weekend was spoilt by the standard of pitch - and most tent pitches are sloping - and that we were unable to reserve a place with friends.

Having found very good reviews on this site decided to try it as a first family camp. Came for a weekend end of May.

Cannot fault the site, toilet/shower blocks very good, plenty of washing up areas, laundry but can't comment as we did not use it.

Loads of nature type activities, deer stalking / batwatching etc, but these cost.

Location is fantastic, many waymarked walks ranging from 1 mile to several, through woods. My kids particularly enjoyed them.

Despite being full, the campsite not too noisy at night and slept very well.

Excellent for exploring the north Yorks coast, (we travelled to Whitby in 30 minutes)

Excellent site, we will use it again.

Returned on 1st June after 9 days visit. Great site with lots of work done recently, has 3 types of pitches that are yet to be marked so arrive early if you want your pick of the spots.

In the centre of the forest with great wildlife and brilliant ranger activities for families. Wonderful clearly marked walks and cycle routes, Great for kids, dogs and adults. Good shower blocks but loss of power when full and maybe not enough showers as on bank hols long waits. Need a couple more water and waste areas but these are only small points to make. Well stocked shop, not over priced with pocket money toys for kids. Wardens very helpful and are extremely friendly.

Would recommend The Coachman, Rosedale (dogs welcome outside)and especially The New Inn,Cropton (dogs welcome inside)for fantastic food. Steam train to Whitby, Castle Howard and Gothland (Heartbeat village) for a visit. Petrol station close by has well stocked shop and great service. Plenty of nearby farm shops for good produce for the BBQ. Make sure you take Avons skin so soft to stop midgies having a feast.

If you are looking for a place to relax, unwind and get away for it all then you will enjoy Spiers House.

Have just spent a week at Spiers House in a touring caravan and am amazed at the comments of the reviews left for May 2008? We stayed in one of their premium sites and it was far from satisfactory. Basically this site is undergoing a three year development and boy did we know it as the tractors and diggers started up every morning at 8am (sometimes earlier) right by our pitch!
The new caravan pitches are hard standing but either side are just banks of clay and mud. These premium pitches are not ready and should not be hired out particularly at such a cost (£26 per night). Development is well underway around the site and there is a constant noise of machinery.
We were told by the wardens that 42 log cabins are about to be built on the outskirts of the site. Our friends stayed on the lower grass area and they were packing the tents and caravans in dangerously close over the Bank Holiday weekend.
I would agree that the shower facilities are excellent and the wardens exceptionally helpful but we will give this site a wide berth for the next three years. Incidentally, Forest Holidays make no mention of this development on their web site!

This was our second visit to this campsite after having over a year and a half break from camping following the birth of our son. It certainly seems to have expanded since we were last here (and we are amazed at how pitch fees have gone up in the past year and a half – although this is the case with every site)!

On arrival the staff were very friendly and helpful and took us to the field where we could pitch. Unfortunately after spending an hour putting my tent up the owner came over to say I had pitched in the wind break – being my first camping trip with our 1 year old son I told him that I wasn’t prepared to move it considering it is basically a field and nobody had told us about the white dots! So watch out when you pitch, there is a mark for your car, one for your tent and one for a wind break although nobody seemed to totally understand the system!

The hard standings for caravans look very impressive, only minor concern would be that they aren’t yet landscaped so it does have a slight building site feel to it, but I don’t think it’ll be long before the caravan area will look very impressive once the turf grows back in.

The shop stocks many basic supplies and is open at good times (I think it’s 9 – 12 and 4 – 7). The toilet blocks are very nice now. The showers were powerful and lovely and warm. There are little enclosed sink areas too which are quite handy!

We went to the Coach House down the road on the final evening and they did a gorgeous meal, which was very reasonably priced. Their ales were well priced too and they take debit card (officially for over £10, although the barmen did allow us to open a tab on drinks and pay by card even though it was only £6!)

Overall this campsite is still excellent, although we were a bit dubious about whether we still liked it after the tent incident, but they didn’t make us move it in the end! Our only concern is now Forest Holidays has been taken over there is a slightly more commercial feel to the site and they certainly pack a lot of people on the site, but it didn’t feel crowded and it’s nice and close to Pickering which certainly has some nice bakeries for a nice lunch
