Excellent site to visit with friends. Lit fire, had a few beers and lots of laughs - Still managed to pitch tent, even though it was pouring down! Showers weren't great, but didn't put us off returning two weeks later. Clachaig Inn is superb. Good food and music. Recommend. Best bit is having your own fire :-)

Stayed here on three occasions to date, and planning to return many times. To the typical outdoor person such as myself this is about as good as they get! The pitches are superbly secluded, even at peak times of the year where you can either pick a spot in the woods or next to the river. This is also one of the only sites around the area that allows fires provided they are built in the stone circles all around the site and out by 11pm. The surrounding mountains offer maximum protection considering the high winds this part of the Highlands can suffer from. There is a great pub within 15 minutes walk, plus the village of Glencoe is only half an hour away by foot. The only downside to this great site is the condition of the shower and toilet blocks. I first stayed here in September 2005, one of the showers was broken and when I returned the following May this year, it was still the same. I think a lot of hikers turn a blind eye to this but I think it's well overdue they looked into new blocks considering how busy this site can be, it is unacceptable. However, it won't put me off and planning my forth visit in the spring.

We went to this site to stay for one night. There were no staff available due to staff shortages. There is very little grass to pitch up on because of a ring road around the site or burnt patches from old fires. The grass was flooded in most places due to the heavy rain fall and the toilets and showers were in a portacabin. This site didn't seem to offer a lot for £13 a night and we did not end up staying.

Have been to this site a few times this past year, wonderful scenery, but would hope the facilities are upgraded soon - the toilet and showers could do with it especially seen as how the prices were put up this year. There is no on-site shop, the nearest in Glencoe village and the nearest pub is a 10 minute walk. Been elsewhere with better facilities and pub on site and charging less

The best bit about staying in this campsite is waking up surrounded by cloud-topped mountains! It's a fairly basic site with pitches marked out in white-washed stones, each with its own parking space. There are plenty of trees (and plenty of the resulting midges I'm afraid!) offering a bit of shelter and seclusion. The loos and showers are in porta-cabins with a couple of plastic porta-loos too. It's 50p for a shower and they looked clean enough.
The night we stayed, though, was entirely quiet and peaceful and on the strength of that I would thoroughly recommend this campsite for an 'away-from-it-all camping experience.

I seem to remember being told to put out our camp fire at about 11pm! Gets dark about 10pm, and you start needing a fire for warmth/light etc. Absolutely daft!
Apart from that it is in a beautiful location, and the pub is amazing - only about 1/2 a mile up the road. And I'd recommend the walk to the Lost Valley nearby (not really walkable from the campsite though!)

Red Squirrel Campsite reminded me of the basic style of camping I used to do as a Girl Guide, with campfires every night and a beautiful crystal clear river nearby. The scenery all around the site is spectacular and everyone who saw my photos said it looked like I had been to The Rockies!
The site itself is very basic indeed with portacabin toilet and shower blocks and no shop or laundrette. If you like luxury camping with an abundance of facilities then this isn't for you. However, if you want to sit around the glow of a campfire after a long day walking then you must visit Red Squirrel. What it lacks in facilities Red Squirrel more than makes up for with sheer natural beauty and tranquility, with nature coming right up to your doorstep. Woodpeckers and owls could be heard as well as seeing an eagle fly overhead on the walk to the village. Some of my most beautiful photographs from the holiday were taken from the campsite and even from inside our tent looking out.
We stayed for a fortnight and we don't drive so it became a bit of a chore walking about 2.5 miles to the nearest decent sized shop in Ballachulish then back again with our supplies (the Spar in Glencoe Village 1.75 miles away was too small and expensive for such a long stay). If you want to see the area properly and not waste your time on shopping then you really do need a car or bike to get around. That said, it didn't stop us from having a wonderful time exploring the local area by foot.
Another problem we had was the lack of laundrette. Although their website says they have a laundrette they actually didn't. This wouldn't have mattered for a short stay but when staying for a fortnight it could have been a real problem. We attempted to hand wash our clothes at first but with a spell of wet weather that wouldn't lift we just couldn't get them dry. The site warden very kindly offered to do our laundry himself for a small fee, which helped us a great deal until the weather improved.
Despite the problems we had as backpackers staying for a long time we really were pleased we chose Red Squirrel and we would love to go back there again.
My highlights of the holiday were collecting fresh mussels from the shore of Loch Leven (a tidal Loch) and cooking them on an open fire on the beach and seeing wild deer on the Pap of Glencoe.

This is an excellent site. The location is almost perfect and the facilities are very good. The only minor problems are: the proximity of the A82 road, which means there is some traffic noise to spoil the tranquillity ; and the lack of grassy pitches due to the site having a mini road network. The local pub is very good - serving real ale and a large range of whiskies. It also has some great live music on. This is a great place to come camping.

Fantastic, basic, old fashioned site (in a world of over-done caravan parks). Perfect base for exploring coast and mountains. Eat and drink at the Clachaig Inn, and try the Kinlochleven Ice Factor for indoor climbing, Ice climbing etc if the weather is bad.

This is a lovely site me and my husband took the kids here and they loved it. Had a nice spot by the river where the kids played for hours splashing in the clear water and had a bonfire every night. Didn't want to come home so peaceful and relaxing. Great place would recommend it to everyone. Will be returing soon!
