Just got back from 5 days at Red Squirrel. I last visited about 5 years ago and it's not changed much in that time. Which is a good thing.

The scenery is still beautiful and you can pretty much pitch where you want. You can have fires which is the reason we picked here, as long as you use a spot where there's previously been a fire but there are plenty of these about.

We bought a bag of logs from the shop in the village for about £6 and there were loads of branches around the site to use for kindling. The staff were chatty and friendly which is always a bonus! The prices have crept up a little bit and it's now £9 per adult and 50p for kids under 12.

The ladies showers and loos remain the same although the gents have had an overhaul and looked much nicer than the ladies (I had a sneaky peek when no-one was looking!) Good news though, the showers are now free and it's 50p for the hairdryer which is no biggy.

I think there might be extra showers as there were 2 wooden huts but these were locked as it was fairly quiet.

We haven't got kids so I've not rated this but the kids we did see seemed perfectly happy running round, climbing trees etc.

So, all in all it's much as I remembered and I would happily keep returning to this site. The setting and scenery make it and the fact there's a really nice pub 10 minutes walk up the road is an added bonus.

This site is an absolute gem, when we arrived, there was a sign at the gate saying 'pitch where you want, we will see you later' The site itself is huge, and every pitch amazing. 2 rivers by the site (one due to the amount of rain we had during our short stay, must have risen 2 metres) Plenty of trees, and all the roads, outlined with large rocks, no parking on the actual pitches, but the car is never far away, easily within carrying distance of your stuff.

Amenities are very adequate, but I would imagine they get pretty busy at the height of the season. But on chatting to the very pleasant owner, they are expanding the toilets and showers next year. Another massive bonus, is that campfires are allowed, which was the original reason we picked this site. Will we be back, Oh yes, despite us travelling all the way from Birmingham, this is going to be a regular haunt. Don't change a thing.

We loved this site, breath taking views, surrounded by mountains, we camped near the river where the kids could play safely, we enjoyed the camp fires. It made our week.

Owners very friendly, and the polish lady and man who worked there were a delight to talk to, very helpful.

The only drawback is the price. Its ok if there are only a couple of you with young kids, anyone over 12 costs £8, under 12s are 50p. Next year we will have 2 of our 3 kids over 12, so paying £32. 50 and night is out of the question.

Another no no is paying 50p for a shower, no privacy at all, when the site fee is so expensive. All in all tho, we would recommend this site, its brilliant, apart from the fee and having to pay for the facilities.

We camped here one night in July 2011 in good weather. This is a nice site for camping in a tent, great pitches and stunning views. I only stayed one night but I found the staff very friendly and although there are campsite rules, we did not find these restrictive like others have suggested. Toilets/showers are reasonable. This is one I would book again. Its very close to a river so that may be a concern for those with small children. I may have concerns about the effects of a couple days heavy rain, although the banks are well bounded.

Having spent 3 weekends at this campsite this year alone, and having spent most over 30 years revisiting it I thought its time I added my pennys worth. In short one of the best campsites there is. Yes, you can have other sites with on sites shops, playareas for kids, electric hook ups ect. But if you are like me and wanting to take your kids to camping and to get them away from it all and let them go off and adventure in safety this is your place. The toilet and shower are facilities are as good as they come, clean and plentiful. The staff are fantastic and helpful and a credit to the site. Added to this the advantage of building a small controlled camp fire, my kids loved this. All in all this is Scotlands wee gem.

I have used this site for about eight years. I find it a very special place with a lovely calm feel to it.

I only travel off peak so cannot comment on what it's like in high summer although I understand the midges have an international reputation.

Loads of flat, hardstanding parking spacing for motorhomes but no hook-ups, (a fact that may deter a lot of modern motorhomers) and plenty of space in the trees.

I can echo the comments of the previous reviewer - the actual owner is very friendly and interesting to talk to.

Like many sites, because it charges per person and not per unit, it is heading towards the expensive end of the spectrum and it is just not on to charge 50p per (very basic) shower.

It is one of the very few sites in western Scotland open all year and is magical in winter - there is an excellent pub 10 min away with roaring fires in winter.

We are becoming regular visitors to this site due to it's 'back to basics / wild camping' feel and plenty of beautiful scenery to bless the morning. The facilities as mentioned before are basic, but they are there to use instead of going behind a bush.

We arrived very late on the Friday evening, but soon got woken up early in the morning by the warden / owner who was looking for his money. He is a chatty pleasant wee man when you get to know him.

Glencoe is a gentle 1/2 an hours walk if you require any shopping, or just to visit the area. In the other direction there is the dog friendly Clachaig Inn, who offer decent food at a reasonable price and have entertainment on the Saturday evening.

We really enjoy this site and will be there this Easter and most weekends during the summer months.

This is probably my favourite campsite. On saying that I can understand why it may get negative comments from time to time. It is not for everyone. I love it for a variety of reasons - mainly the surroundings which are breathtaking, the feeling that you are truly camping without all mod cons, the owners are friendly, quirky and interesting folks likewise the staff, I can string up my tarp between the trees and enjoy a real camp fire.

The facilities are basic - deliberately, the site seems to benefit from a back to basics attitude. The toilets and showers are kept clean and tidy though and the site in general is well kept without distracting from the rural feel of the place.

You can camp anywhere within the site but I will concede that some pitches can be a wee bit on the rocky side - the upside to that is that the ground is well drained, even in monsoon season!

If you are lucky and like me camp all year round, you can enjoy a variety of wildlife from your tent door including deer wandering through the site, buzzards and owls overhead,I have even heard a woodpecker!

This is a place to relax, unwind and take in 'the nature' as the Scandinavians warmly refer to the outdoors. It is also a place to strike up friendships with your fellow campers, I can't remember ever being stuck for a 'blether' either in the campsite or at the Clachaig Inn 10mins walk away! A number of overseas visitors use this site and it is not unusual to be sitting round a campfire chatting to French, Dutch, German, Irish and a host of other folks. There is no language barrier here!

Of course there are rules, like any other site but I don't consider them to be unreasonable. To be honest the rules are there mainly to keep the drunks in check (the summer weekends can be hectic!) but even the larger groups tend to behave themselves and if you can't put up with a wee bit of good natured banter don't camp here on a busy weekend!

We visited Red Squirrel campsite as part of our lands end to John O'groats trip. This is a great campsite within walking distance to the pub! Campfires are allowed which is a bonus and there is a little river/stream running along the side.

The toilets and showers are kept clean and washing up facilities are available (cold water)

There are a tonne of rules and regulations to adhere to which I understand but it does seem like a bit of a military camp upon arrival. Also, campfires have to be out by 11/12pm which is a shame as it can dampen your evening. A warden comes around and pours water / sand over your fire and is on regular patrol.

The campsite caters for every age group and caters for everybody's interest. A great stop over for walkers.

There is a little hut on-site filled with tourist information and maps. While we were there we visited the local areas such as; Fort William, Oban, Inverawe smokery, Glencoe, The Nevis range, Isle of Kerrera ect ect. So much to see and do in such a gorgeous location.

The only downside I would say would be the uneven and rocky ground which made for sleepless nights and broken tent pegs. But if you are fortunate to get a good pitch it is well worth a visit. Would definitely go back and stay here.

Great site location - well laid out, showers and loos basic but perfectly adequate.

The opportunity to light your own fire is great - but bring your own wood as the site doesn't sell it anymore.

Lots of rules - but understandable.

Only gripe (and its a major one for us) is that the cost for a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 lads 13 & 15) is £32 a night - this means we will not, sadly, be returning as the cost is just not justified.

As a sole walker / climber its good value at £8 a night, and I would recommend it.
