Having passed this pub last weekend coming back from Over Haddon, we decided to have a night there this weekend in our campervan.
We telephoned the pub to ask about availability and were told that all electric hook ups were taken, but there was plenty of room elsewhere on site. As we didn't need hook up we set off and arrived later in the afternoon.
The landlord Derek met us on arrival, booked us in and directed us to our field. We shared a large field with only 4 other vans and positioned ourselves opposite the breathtaking views. We had a fantastic meal in the pub in the evening and our two dogs were made very welcome. All the bar staff and other guests/locals were very friendly.
The toilets and shower were basic but you can always use the pub facilities from 8 am if required. As others have said, it is camping as it should be- old school!
There is a petition in the pub to try and oppose a decision by the local council who are trying to close down a number of sites in the area including The Duke of York

I have just returned from a 4 night midweek break at the Duke of York campsite in Derbyshire.
It is a lovely site with excellent views.
It has 2 toilets a shower (which costs 1 pound) and a dish washing area.
We took our dog camping for the first time and it was a great experience, she even came to the pub with us each night and was made welcome. She sat under the table and by the end of our stay you didn't know she was there.
The campsite is right on top of the Tissington Trails which is a very nice walk.
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and the other campers all seemed very nice.
The landlord Derek was lovely as were all his staff.
At 5 pound a night I wouldn't want to stay anywhere else.

This is an immense site which, according to the owner, the park authority limits, space is not a problem due to this.
The level pitches for campers and vans are near to the pub, the main camping fields are slightly sloping.
The cost is £5 per night for 2 adults and a small child, cheap, however bear in mind that there is only 1 shower and a male and a female toilet which, due to the septic tank being full, were out of action, the pub opened their toilets however these were shut between 2300 and 0600.
There is one washing up sink with just cold water, this is outside
The pub is handy and the location is good for the cycling in the area, Tissington and high peak trails.
Would I go again? I'm unsure

We came along for a 'Fathers Day Treat' and really enjoyed this site. Lovely view from the camping field at the rear of the pub.
Nice quiet site on the night we visited with a variety of tents, caravans and DofE people present. Limited facilities, just 1 male and 1 female loo and 1 shower, however the pub facilities were available from early morning.
At £5 per night it was well worth the money. The pub offered good beer, tasty reasonably priced meals and was all offered by friendly staff and landlord.
We will definitely be back for further visits.

We have just returned from a fabulous weekend at Duke of York, we stayed in our caravan 2 adults & 2 teenagers and our dog, OK, so it rained all-day Saturday, this gave us chance to walk the high peak trail (Just across the road)
The food, service & prices are brilliant in the pub on site (Highly recommend you give it a try) What a gem of a site, its basic, but, brought back memories of camping as a child, when you didn't need to be rich to camp and you invented your own entertainment.
Will definitely be returning in the near future

Just back after our second visit to the Duke and have already booked to go again in a couple of weeks!
Visited here with some friends (they had a campervan)and as with our last visit, Derek the landlord made us very welcome.
The site has easy access from the road and because of the lack of rain the ground was very hard and dry. The site facilities are a little basic, but clean. No TV coverage but we took a satellite, mobile phone (O2) and radio OK.
Once again, we ate in the pub and had an excellent meal at reasonable rates. Lovely real fire too! The pub does a Golden (OAP) meal deal between midday and 8.30 Monday to Friday too.
Just across the road from the pub is the High Peak Trail which is ideal for a walk or cycle ride.
All in all, a fab weekend and can't to visit again.

This was a gamble of a site because at £5 a night on a bank holiday weekend it was a little hard to believe. However we were pleasantly surprised as it was true and a nice weekend away.
This is not as stated by others all singing all dancing but it doesn't need to be. It is a field or 2 at the back of an amazing pub.
It is a windy site so be prepared to wrap up warm. The ground is very lumpy bumpy so prepare for that also. The toilet as in yes just the one was fine nothing more to say really it was run down but I understood there is an issue with planning that is being worked on as we speak.
The play area is a slide in the pub garden. This was a little disappointing but we paid only £5 so can't complain.
There are beautiful surroundings of Buxton and in the sun it was lovely. It is a drive to everywhere nothing close by and no shop on site.
Any downfalls of this site were more than made up by the food served in the pub it was so delicious we went there both nights (perhaps a bit glamp not camp) Fantastic home cooked food.
Had a great time but not a site we will return to more one that we have done and now looking for others. Not the greatest for the kids.

We have just returned from a short weekend stay on this site.
Firstly, I would like to say how lovely it has been to stay on a 'real' campsite for a change. If you are looking for an all action park this is not the place for you, but that suited us fine. No noisy drunken groups or thumping music till stupid o clock. What you get instead is fantastic views across the Peak District and fresh air abounds!
The site is attached to a wonderful pub and restaurant that serves delicious home cooked fresh food, with friendly staff and regulars. Children are welcome as are well behaved dogs. The bar has a wonderful open fire that we relaxed by each evening after our meal.
The site is basic but is adequate. There is one shower and a toilet each for men and women, although you are free to use the pub's facilities in the day. The shower costs £1, lasts for 5 minutes and is lovely and hot. We have been on sites where the facilities have been better, but as I said before, it is adequate.
The site is a haven for walkers as there are loads of walks around the area.
Buxton is approx 10/15 mins drive away where there is a Tesco for your basics such as milk etc.
On arrival the owner greeted us and allowed us to choose our pitch. We were told there was no rush when leaving on your departure day, another breath of fresh air! No rushing to get packed up and gone before 10 o clock in the morning.
My only point that I should make is ensure you peg down well. It can get VERY windy up in the hills!
Price per night - £5 without electric

We stayed at this site bank holiday weekend and it was beautiful. The weather was hot and sunny, the surroundings were amazing, the pub was lovely!
The only down side was the toilets! There are only 2 toilets (you can use the ones in the pub which I highly recommend!) and the shower was at best, awful! It was dirty the first day we went and freezing cold trickles of water, but warmed up the next day.
It was very busy when we arrived and had to settle with the pitch furthest away from the pub and facilities, next to a very loud couple, who played their bad rock music too loud until midnight! This I realise is not the fault of the campsite and we had no problems after that with them.
The owner and staff are very helpful and (even though we didn't eat there) the food looked lovely! If you enjoy walking / riding / cycling or any other outdoor activity then this campsite is ideal for a couple of nights, because you cant really moan for a fiver a pitch!
Would definitely come back but maybe for 1 night not 3.

Visited the Duke of York for a last minute weekend break. The owner was very friendly letting us choose whichever pitch we wanted.
Spectacular views over the surrounding countryside, near to Bakewell, Buxton and Ashbourne. Food in the pub excellent homemade chips especially.
Toilet facilities a bit basic but we had our own shower and toilet so it was no problem, very good value at £10 per night including EHU.
Will visit again but remember to put in a windbreak, it can be a bit windy on top of the hill.
