It’s been just over 12 months since we have visited and what a change to the site. On our last visit the site resembled a building site, with work well underway to create new pitches, toilet block and general landscaping.

The site now has a modern, clean shower/toilet block, a choice of hard or grass pitches and separate camping field and dog exercise area; there is also low level lighting. There have been hundreds of trees planted around the parameter and once these start to mature, it will make the area more beautiful.

We had a pitch at the far end of the site which had spectacular views of the hills and fields. There are plenty of water points dotted about. Good Free-view TV reception using an aerial, mobile (02) good, although couldn't get any WIFI.

The pub has not lost any of its charm since the previous landlord left, and thankfully has not been modernised, but still in keeping with the environment. We had two evening meals and all the food was excellent and reasonably priced. The current landlord and staff very pleasant and the service was also excellent.

All in all for £20 per night, we would highly recommend a visit here and we look forward to returning again.

Looking for a lovely trip out? – Eyam Hall & Craft Centre (NT) and Plague Museum well worth a visit.

We just spent a weekend here, it is our latest visit to this site and the cost was £16 per night 2 persons in a tent.

The toilets are the cleanest I have ever seen on a camp site, brand new with good free showers. Full marks for that.

There is a pub close by too which is a bonus if travelling light, the food is OK and a good selection of beers, the service is hit and miss, there is no play area. You need to be off site by 1100.

I believe the plans are to run music events on what was the old field.

The camping field, the ground was hard and quite stony, it is sloping too, not too bad at the top, becoming more pronounced towards the bottom. There are allocated pitches however these are not currently marked. Plenty of taps on the hook up pitches.

The problem we found, yet again, was the noise, despite the 2230 rule, one party was up until 0400 drinking and making a racket, followed by football at 0430, another had music blaring out until past 0100, there was also a problem with kids kicking tents and running off, road noise is also a problem despite it being some distance away. We go for outdoor activities after a long hard weeks work, up early and out until late, we don't want grief, we want to just to relax and chill, it wasn't peaceful and I was glad to leave come 0600 Sunday morning. I suspect music events will exacerbate these problems.

This is a nice site, convenient for the High peak trail, it is not a quiet site however which is the main reason for the mark down. I would suggest enforcing the curfew within reason and ejecting those who cause problems.

We stayed here for the spring bank holiday weekend, the weather was dire, but that is not down to the site! Easy to find on the main A515 it is clear some money has been spent on the new toilet and shower block and the food in the pub is lovely. However, the pitches are very close together, we booked a pitch for a van and awning but didn't pitch the awning because of the weather, good job really as it would have joined onto next doors van. The views were great and other campers friendly but we prefer a little privacy. There are two showers and four toilets each for men and women, however on a busy site this can mean some hanging around for a shower but when you do get in the water is hot and the pressure good and free and operated by a push button.

The elsan point is a little high and whilst this makes it easier to lift the lid off it can be tricky to lift your waste carrier, in addition it would benefit from a tap to allow waste to be rinsed out.

On our checkout day the warden came down with a list checking those leaving were packing up and it felt like we were being ushered off the site almost like waiters stacking the chairs on tables in a restaurant to get you to leave. Not the best exit!

Hi, just returned from a brilliant weekend at this campsite.

The owners are very polite and friendly. Since we last visited this campsite they have installed new toilet and dish washing facilities, although they are very clean there is no hand wash in the toilets and the dish washing area has only 2 sinks, other than that it is a beautiful campsite with excellent views of the surrounding country side. We will use this campsite again and would definitely recommend a stay here.

We had a lovely meal at the pub on Sunday evening excellent food and wine with very friendly service.

Stayed at The Duke of York in our motorhome at the end of January. The weather was horrendous, therefore we probably didn't see the site at its best.

Check-in went smoothly with both the owners being extremely pleasant and helpful.

Given the choice of several pitches and eventually chose one with excellent views across the Peak District, but more importantly within close proximity to the Facilities Block.

Set up and went to the Pub for a well earned drink. Horror of horrors - door shut and Pub in darkness. Just as we were about to head back to our unit the owner appeared at the door (paint brush in hand) and invited us in (apparently they were redecorating and due to it being quiet, had taken the opportunity to do so without being distracted).

The pub was duly re-opened and we spent a pleasant couple of hours relaxing by the open fire.

We had seen several reviews referring to excessive charges. Well yes perhaps by 'Milltown' standards they are, but in all fairness Peroni lager is not cheap anywhere, so I could live with £4. 50 a pint. Whilst we didn't eat there, the menu appeared varied and the presentation of meals we observed being served looked really good. Once again prices are not cheap but appeared to be representative of other pubs within the area. Although unlike some of the other outlets a 'Light Bite' selection was available and was very reasonable priced.

Anyway back to the site! Unfortunately due to the heavy rain the ground was quite waterlogged in places. The recent earthworks have not yet settled, therefore in places where there should be grass, there is merely muddy soil.

However on the upside the gravel hard-standing pitches are very level and do not collect rainwater.

Each pitch has its own 16amp power supply and dedicated water tap.

The site is adequately illuminated at night.

The new facilities block is amongst one of the best we've been in. Didn't experience any problems with water temperature, as reported in some reviews.

There are some minor modifications needed however - Hooks for hanging clothing/towels on, toilet brushes, toiletry holders for shampoo, soap etc. And finally a mop for mopping shower cubicle floor.

Whilst the facilities were adequate for our purposes, I'm uncertain as to whether 2 male W/C's (plus several urinal's) and 2 showers (similar facilities, minus urinal's, in Ladies I'm reliably informed) would suffice in the height of summer when the site is full of caravanner's & campers.

Once again the pot wash area is adequate at quieter times, however there may be a long queues of disgruntled 'Pot Washers' in summer!

The Elsan point took some locating, and only after asking in the Pub were we directed to another building behind the new Facilities Block. Could this not be integrated into the new block? In the interim - Signage Please!

The site would definitely benefit from a full time Grounds man/Site Warden and I am sure that there are hundreds of potential applicants whom for free site accommodation would avail themselves of this role. As it would be a shame if the owners were to spread themselves too thinly. Running a Pub/Restaurant is a full-time job in itself, without the added responsibility of a campsite with all the problems this can entail.

In summary this site has got all of the ingredients to be a fantastic facility. The owners have invested heavily and are obviously anxious to capitalise upon their investment. However sometimes (to use an old cliché) 'Less is more'!

Will we return? Yes definitely! When? Not sure as the only thing that would put me off revisiting in Summer would be the sheer volume of other Caravanner's/Campers.

Finally when we first arrived, the owner mentioned Trip Advisor and how he welcomed constructive criticism. We discussed how most people tend only to relate negative experiences rather than positive ones. Therefore I submit what I believe to be an honest and balanced review.

Just had a great weekend at the Duke of York. This was our first weekend away in our motorhome and couldn't have picked a better spot. The manager was very welcoming and showed us where our pitch was when we arrived on Friday night.

The shower and toilet block were spotless, the water lovely and hot. The views from the site are beautiful.

Great walking direct from the site, which the dogs really appreciated!

Had a really good meal in the pub on Saturday night, with fantastic service. A bit pricey but worth it.

We will definitely return here in the future.

Spent 2 nights at the Duke of York and had a great weekend. The owner was very friendly and came to see us each day to check we were all ok. We used a hard standing pitch with EHU which was £20 p/n. The new toilet and shower block is lovely with hot free showers and very clean. Great pub with a welcoming real fire. We didn't eat but the menu looks good and I would agree with previous reviews that it is a bit pricey for pub food. The views are great and lots of good walks from the campsite. We would definitely visit again.

Just come home from 6 nights on the Duke of York. A site under obvious regeneration, as new hard standing and hook up for caravans and trailer tent but NOT tents, brilliant showers block very clean and warm, shame it was totally shut down for 24hrs. However this was still not completed disabled toilet was approx 18' off the ground and locked! I also never found where the elsonal disposal point was either. The Landlord was extremely friendly and helpful to my requirements, but only because I asked for something. I found his off hand approach to the campsite very disappointing. Upon arrival we had to assume to book in the pub, we were then simply told which was the camp field just sent to pitch up any where, very relieved to find space to pitch my frame tent because the field sloped at precarious angles in places. The views are absolutely stunning the facilities could be excellent. I just do not understand the landlord who hasn't made the site a higher priority it could be, the top site in the peaks. He just seems to think his pub compensates for his lack of attention to what, is a really a little gold mine if he chooses. I found the pub prices for meals were top end for people who can only afford to camp. Good but could be excellent. Please when will he get his act together and bother to finish this site?

Just returned from a two night stay at The Duke of York. This was not our first choice campsite but we were glad we ended up here for two main reasons (also the views aren't bad either). Firstly the new toilet and shower block. Warm, clean and new these facilities are some of the best we have come across whilst camping in England and France, a great addition to the site. Secondly this was the first time we have bought our dog along camping with us because we've always been worried about finding places that would welcome him if the weather became bad, there were no such worries at The Duke of York. No extra charge for him and you were the odd one out if you didn't have your dog with you! We ate in the lounge (£34 for two courses and drinks each which we thought was reasonable for what we had, the service, and being able to keep the dog with us) and every table had their dogs with them which made an excellent conversation starter with our fellow campers and diners. We were bought water for the dog without even having to ask and were not made to feel bad when he had a couple of barking fits. So I'd like to say a big thankyou to the landlord and staff putting up with us and making us feel so welcome in the pub. Being so dog friendly I am sure will help keep you busy because now we know that the dog can behave in a tent and that The Duke of York is so dog friendly we and others will surely be back. Good luck with your further improvements.

A very disappointing stay after booking at short notice for bank holiday weekend. The toilet/ washing facilities lacked any hand soap, hooks for clothes and toilet brushes. There was intermittent hot water that would cut out at peak times, most frustrating if you were in the shower. I believe someone was trying to fix this on the Monday morning. One of the two washing up sinks did not have taps, and even if they did probably would have made the water issue worse. Having read previous reviews I was expecting it to be all fully functional this late in the season. There are no markers for tent pitches meaning that we returned from a day out to find tents had been fitted either side of us and our friends into the space we had been instructed to leave for parking ours and our neighbours car. The owner offered for us to move to another part of the site in the caravan area or even leave with a full re-fund but at six o'clock at night with young children this was not appealing and was offered without any apology. We did not try the pub food so cannot comment on this. It is in a good central position for exploring the area and does have some good views. There was a separate field for children to play in which is good, but I would prefer a more spacious area around the tent so you can keep an eye on young children, especially when the play field is next to a busy road. Even without these issues, the site is in an exposed spot close to a busy road, and therefore not one I would choose again.
