We stayed at this camp site for 3 nights over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

First. The positives -

The site is in a beautiful location near Buxton.

There is a pub on site serving alcoholic beverages and food.

There is a new toilet/shower/washing up block.

The site is dog friendly.

The site had vacancies for the BH

Now. The negatives –

The site IS in a lovely location with great views. However, the tenting field is on a slope (my husband and I found ourselves gradually sliding down the bed through the night).

The tenting field had not been mown recently (there was a lot of long dried grass cuttings all over the field). We had to walk through grass 6-12” long to get to our tent – not much fun after rain, and in the process, carried loads of the grass clippings in to our tent as well!

There are no clearly marked pitches, and although we, personally had plenty of space where we pitched, some of the other campers weren’t as lucky.

The pub itself seemed ok on first view, but when we went in on the first night, we were amazed at how expensive the drinks were - nearly £3 more for the same two drinks at our local! We were too late to eat (thankfully), but the high prices for food would have put us off even if we had been early enough to order. The food coming out of the kitchen looked ok, but not worth the high prices being charged.

The amenity block was certainly new, but to describe it as “fully functional” is laughable!

On the ladies side were 4 toilets which generally didn’t have paper and wouldn’t flush at peak times (excuse the pun!).

There were 4 hand basins (with no soap) that also had very limited water – on the final morning I struggled to even clean my teeth, there was so little cold water dribbling out of the tap!

There were two shower cubicles which were adequate in size, but need hooks to hang towels etc.

Unfortunately, because there are no gravelled paths to access the block, both cubicles were very muddy, which meant undressing and dressing without getting dirty again was almost impossible.

The showers themselves seemed good initially (apart from an occasional blast of cold water), but after about 2 minutes, the water in these had slowed to a trickle down the tiles, making it very difficult to rinse off shampoo etc.

I only attempted to shower once because of these problems, but still had to wait nearly 30 minutes for the half shower I managed!

The site may accept dogs, but I saw no bins to dispose of their faeces, and someone’s (large) dog had messed our pitch about 2 metres from our tent entrance – my Crocs will never be the same again!

As a final whammy, when we left, the rubbish bins were overflowing and there were no recycling facilities for glass/cans etc.

We have just returned home early from this hugely disappointing campsite. We decided to eat in the pub on the first night but the food was very overpriced. We ordered a mixed grill at £25 and sirloin at £19, expecting to have something wonderful for that price. Unfortunately we had to send the food back because the steaks smelt off. The waitress didn't appear to know what to do and came back 5 mins later to say that the chef was making new meals for us, unfortunately we didn't fancy steak after this and would have preferred to be offered a different choice or a refund, however we were hungry so went along with it. The food was nice when it eventually arrived but certainly not worth the inflated price tag. We were told that we weren't going to be offered a tea/coffee to compensate as we already had drinks in front of us and we weren't offered any reduction in the bill for being served the rotten meat. Not wanting to make a fuss we paid up. Drinks were overpriced too, £4. 50/pint for Peroni and £16 for a £10-£12 bottle of wine. We also noticed campsite guests being turned away for food as it was too busy but an apparent mate of the landlord being offered a table as soon as he and his partner walked in without having booked, this seemed to set the scene for how the owners feel about their paying guests.

New toilet/shower block very nice although unfinished however no soap provided all weekend, water a pitiful trickle in the sinks and showers that cut out part way through which was annoying. The bottom part of the field that we camped in was ok but needed a lot more attention and views were fabulous but I noticed some of the upper sections in an appalling state, very rough grass 1-2 feet high with lots of thistles etc - I saw some new arrivals driving backwards & forwards over it to try and flatten the area so they could pitch their tent. I don't know how the owners dared to charge for this.

Next night in the pub we weren't even acknowledged.

At £25/night for very substandard facilities and appalling customer service we felt ripped off and very disappointed and left early.

Just out on the motorbike for a decent run and decided to pop into the duke of york. This campsite has been a past favourite of ours, but with the facilities needing a bit of an update, we always used the toilet, shower in our own caravan.

However, there is now a brand new toilet block, with gorgeous showers and a 'proper' glass enclosure, no mouldy curtains here!

All very warm and inviting after a long hike or bike ride.

We enjoyed a drink and spoke to the landlord about the next stage of his developments. All in all, this is turning into a stunning campsite, the views from this site are priceless anyway, but it helps to have some 'mod cons' to make your visit more pleasant. (as we have ankle snappers though, a kids play area would be nice).

Just stayed at the duke of York campsite this weekend. Staff and landlords very friendly.

Paid £15 for one night stay which we thought was a bit too much as still only old facilities, we felt £10 would be better till new campsite is finished.

Had a meal in the pub and we were very disappointed. Me and my friend had garlic mushrooms and were priced over £5 and were a small portion of mushrooms on just bread. I felt a bigger portion and maybe toasted bread would have been better. My friend had seafood dippers which came with no dipping sauce, although one was brought out on request. For mains me and my friend had mushroom stroganoff which was ok but not the best I have had. My partner had mixed grill which costs £19 and wasn't really worth that amount, no pork chop or liver or any peas, just a big chicken breast with other meat. Also my other friend had chilli chicken and this was just a chicken breast coated with enough chilli seeds on to burn your mouth out.

The campsite will be great when its finished but could be a bit too expensive at £25 as others only charge £15 to £25 and offer more facilities. All the above said good luck to the new landlords.

We have visited the Duke on numerous occasions, but have not been since the new landlord has taken on the pub and site.

Before we visited recently, we were aware from their website that work was being undertaken, what we didn’t realise or appreciate was how much work is being done!

Those of you who have been before will remember the large field that a majority of campers used. At the time of our visit (end of April), work was well on the way with the service road and hard standings. The new loo block’s foundations appeared to be in place, as is new drainage.

We were fortunate to be given a guided tour around the site by Keith the landlord, who went through the plans for planting trees and low level lighting etc.

I believe the main work is due to be complete by the end of May (depending on the weather). Although a building site at the moment, the site is going to be attractive and lot drier underfoot compared to some previous visits!

The field to the immediate rear of the pub (where we were pitched), is in the future going to be reserved for events/rallies.

We used our own facilities as the current shower/loos do desperately need replacing.

Able to get a TV signal through free view, mobile (O2) also fine.

The pub itself is in the process of having a makeover at the moment and one thing we were hoping for before we arrived was continuity in the atmosphere in the pub. We needn’t have worried; there was a lovely fire, easy listening background music and a very nice welcome.

We ate in the pub both nights and as in the past the food is wonderful, with lovely home made chips! There is a nice selection to choose from including beer battered fish, steak and ale pie, steaks to mention a few.

All-in-all, despite the work going on, we really enjoyed our stay and look forward to a return visit later in the year to see how the site has improved.

Just for reference, we visited Bakewell for its annual food festival; recommend for next year!

We spent only one night here. When we arrived it turned out the hard standing for our motorhome was the pub car park! My partner had been told the site was under construction so we knew we would be surrounded by jcbs etc. But understood this, however was horrified that there was no where to get water from. The 'facilities' were 2 toilets and one shower, all were filthy, there was no hot water or toilet rolls.

The pub served food which seemed very pricey for a campsite but the landlord seemed nice enough and the pub was pleasant to sit and have a drink rather than sit in the car park.

And when we returned home and checked the prices we had been overcharged for the overnight car park stay. Really disappointed and sadly don't think we will return anytime soon.

There isn't any shops or activities local but nicely positioned as a base to view the peak district.

Got a pitch here at short notice - £20 per night with EHU - which going by the other reviews on this site is more than usual!

The facilities are a disgrace!

The new block is only at groundwork stage so I doubt this will be finished any time soon.

Its such a shame because the pub/food/service is excellent.

The toilets in the pub are fine so why is it so difficult to have the same standards in the toilet block.

The toilets are smelly, wet on the floor, often out of paper with handles hanging off the doors. And the shower, please - would you use that?

Also sloping pitches very muddy underfoot.

Only up side is that it is across the road from the start of the Tissington Trail.

I want to reiterate the facts that whatamess submitted. The cost of the pitch up was 15. 00 a night incl electric. We stayed on a pub car park. The toilet and shower blocks were in need of demolition. A lot of work is needed to have this site up to standard. The pub is in nice surrounding but the prices are not ideal especially if you have large families as it would prove costly

For the price I expected more and a more child friendly welcome. Our children got rather bored with this facility. The shower and toilets are a shared facility at the moment. Wasn't happy. Service was poor.

I stayed at the Duke of York for New Year with some friends in 5 motorhomes. The pub has changed hands since we stayed there last New Year and the new Landlords have big plans for the campsite and hope to have the new site, to include 30 hardstandings and a brand new heated toilet/shower/utility block opened by March 2013. At the moment, though, the “facilities” are still abysmal. The pitch fees had gone up and we paid £15 a night, including electricity, which we felt was quite a lot for what we got - a pitch on the car park, a temporary electric hookup and a disgusting toilet and a horrible shower for which they charged £1.

The pub is very comfortable and dog friendly and serves food from 12 noon to 8 pm daily. However, the food, which had been reasonably priced and excellent last year, had now gone up by about £5 for a main course and was, in our opinion, not very good. My friend had a pudding which had to be returned as it tasted uncooked and I had garlic mushrooms, which, although quite tasty, was on what appeared to be a part-baked bread roll and cost over £5. There are also no snacks to have at lunchtime except baguettes and baked potatoes. We overheard complaints from other people about the food as well.

There was a £10 entrance fee on New Year’s Eve which included a hot buffet. The food at the buffet, which had been put out over spirit burners more than an hour beforehand, was mediocre and bland and overcooked and was all meat based, despite the fact that I had been told there would be a vegetarian dish. I therefore had a choice of salad and three potato dishes.

We were all going to get together in the pub for a drink on our last night but found that the pub had unexpectedly closed during the afternoon. I rang and was told it would be opened for us at 8 pm but that no food would be served. We went across just after 8 but the pub was still shut and we eventually took our own drinks into one of the motorhomes at about 8. 30 when we got fed up with waiting.

On a positive side, the pub is well placed for walkers, the Tissington Trail is across the field opposite, and there is a bus service (albeit about 2-hourly) to Ashbourne and Buxton.

Unfortunately we won’t be returning to the Duke of York despite the plans for the new campsite. It look very good but I think the food is going to let the pub down. It is also not going to be helped by closing with no notice.

Having said all that, the new Landlords and their staff are very nice, very friendly and welcoming and I really do hope they make a go of it.

Unfortunately I don't feel I can give more than 4 stars for this site as it is at the moment.

The current Landlord at The Duke of York will be leaving on 21st September 2012.

Please watch this site for updates as they occur, The caravan & campsite are due to be fully redeveloped and completed by the end of March 2013.

We will be open for business during the development of the site which will provide a much safer and secure experience.

The new Landlords Keith & Chris would like to extend a warm welcome to all previous visitors to the site and will be offering discounts to those previous visitors who have had to endure such dreadful facilities.

As you appreciate things don't happen over night however you will see positive changes almost instantly.
