We stayed at Moorcroft for five nights - it's a really lovely campsite with great facilities and central for exploring all of Uist (both of them) and Benbecula. The wardens are very helpful and friendly - offered us an available room in the bunkhouse when we arrived off a late ferry in the rain.
The facilities are very good - showers and toilets spotless, level pitches with drainage ditches dug in to prevent waterlogging - it rained a lot while we were there and we didn't get soggy. Best of all, there is a campers kitchen with some cooking and fridge facilities, and also a table and chairs for eating when the weather gets serious. We spent a lovely afternoon in there playing monopoly!
Several well-stocked shops around Uist and Benbecula. The wildlife is unrivalled - we went on some RSPB walks (info in the shower block) and saw otters and golden eagles. Amazing beaches of white sands which we caught in glorious sunshine.
Masses to do if you like wildlife and walking / cycling, but do take all-weather clothing!
And there didn't seem to be many midges either.

What a lovely site. It is new and the owners are working very hard to improve all aspects. Lovely views and in a quiet location.
The toilet block was excellent and very clean. Showers were good. They also had a pretty campers kitchen and eating area. Very pretty and cozy. Also a washer/ drier with an honesty box!
Lovely views and brilliant area to explore.
We extended our stay as everything so pleasant.
The owners could not do enough for you, which was wonderful.
Can highly recommend, and North Uist is wonderful

Lovely campsite. Great scenic location at the south end of North Uist, which is a stunningly beautiful island. We stayed here for 2 nights and would have happily stayed longer. The owners were lovely, very friendly and very helpful. The facilities were excellent - a new toilet block, a bunk-house and a byre which had been converted to a kitchen/wash-house for use by all. The room contained a washer and drier which we used to catch up on our washing. There was an honesty box, £3 for a wash and £3 for the drier. There was also a microwave oven and a small electric hob, which was great for the campers to use. The campsite looks out over the causeway towards Benbecula and there are lovely walks along the shoreline. Highly recommended.

The facilities are the best we have ever come across on a campsite, they were just like home - double glazed and heated, clean and modern. The only improvement was that there could have been more in the men's, as only one shower and one toilet.
There are two of each in the ladies. The campers kitchen was like a little croft house, and had microwave, 2 electric ring, fridge, table and chairs, flowers, washing machine, dryer and a sink. Again the only drawback was there was only one sink, but we didn't have to wait for long, and a good place to chat to other campers.
The views are lovely across the tidal locks and moorland. Not easy to walk though, as no definite paths.
We chose to camp near the facilities, as a flatish site for the trailer tent. However water came through our groundsheet, as we must have camped on a peaty bog. The wind kept the midges away.
The site is well maintained by friendly owners.

We arrived in near gale force winds and the owner Ian immediately offered to lend a hand to erect, our normally very easy to put up, tipi,
It was our first visit to the Uists and were very pleased with the cleanliness and facilities here, albeit the ground can become quickly saturated with the heavy rain that we experienced,
However we stayed for 8 days and we did get onto the hills in fine sunny weather and saw hen harriers and short eared owls hunting along the coast in front of the site.
We used the communal kitchen and drying room and everything worked as it should.
Being critical only one cubicle in the gents when the site is really busy could be a minus.
We'll be back in a van in 2012.

Stayed at Moorcroft for 3 nights whilst touring the western isles. First class facilities toilets and showers of the highest order, comfortable size pitches with mains hook up hardstanding for caravans and motorhomes. Friendly owners. For those without their own units there is a bunkhouse which is really top class, don't know charges but looked very good. The name bunkhouse doesn't do it justice. Most pitches look out over the bay which is stunning if the weather is good and fortunately we were blessed with excellent weather. Make sure you have enough food etc as the shops were non existent. Would we visit again the answer is a definite yes.

We had 3 nights here in very windy weather. The site was lovely, very clean, hot water, washing machine, dryer etc. , etc. , - everything you need.
As it is a new site everything was in excellent condition. The toilet block was very well thought out and the showers were hot and efficient. The standard of the buildings was very high.
We had just moved from a grim site elsewhere so it was a relief to find Moorcroft. The owners were so helpful - even arranging for my husband to watch Man. United in the bunkhouse which happened to be empty at the time!
Perhaps one small criticism is that the site is fairly small and units close together. The thoughtful positioning of the units however ensured a good amount of privacy.
It was pretty full all the time we were there so perhaps it is advisable to book ahead.

Previous reviewers say it all regarding the site – top class facilities and a lovely setting. We stayed 2 nights and found everything to be pretty well perfect.
Opposite the camp site entrance is one of the Millennium Crofters footpaths – fairly well marked out footpaths into the hills and around the lochs. Stunning scenery and fairly easy walking. You can chose any number of paths from a 20 minute stroll to a 2-3 hours circular walk.
There is a shop in the township and also there are 3 Coop supermarkets on the Hebrides which are really well stocked. Of the independent super-markets (several around) we found MacEllands in Bebenbecular to be outstanding – prices were competitve and they stocked everything.
If you need toilet chemicals make sure you take it with you - none of the shops stocked - in the end we found it in the hardware shop in Carnan on the main road.
So much to see and do throughout the islands. Many wildcamp but to be honest there are not that many suitable areas for this. We found a few that are marked as picnic areas and are well out of the way.
This site is central enough to see the whole of the islands. Be warned its very popular and you may need to book - when we were there it was full.

One of the last opportunities of the year to take our new Omega 250 tent out for test in the Outer Hebrides. Not a surprise in mid October, we arrived to an empty site and had the pick of the pitches overlooking the sandy tidal flats of the ford between Benbecula and North Uist. Watching the tide creeping in slowly was a very relaxing way to spend a sunny afternoon at our location overlooking the water. This was the first season for this new site at Moorcroft and judging by the positive comments left in the visitors book appears to have been an overwhelming success.
Facilities for campers include an excellent shower and toilet annex to the main Bunkhouse. There's even a hairdryer available for campers in the common space in the annex. The big plus is a charming kitchen and dining space in a converted byre just for the campers that has little vintage touches that make it feel unique. Beautiful spot that's only 15 minutes drive from the main port at Lochmaddy and 10 minutes drive to a local shop at Clachan crossroads.
Highly recommend using the Moorcroft site as a base for exploring the Uists and if you're not camping make a booking for the Bunkhouse.

This campsite was the best we've ever visited.
We arrived and pitched our tent, however the tent pole snapped and the owner couldn't have done more to help.
The site only opened a few weeks ago, and had been very well thought out. The campers kitchen is just what is needed on the Outer Hebrides when the weather is less than welcoming! Fitted with washer, dryer, fridge, cooker, kettle, microwave, even crockery and a table to eat at - it was perfect.
The shower/toilet facilities were spotless, cleaned every day, hot water and great showers. Included in the facilities was information on local attractions, which was really helpful.
The owners very welcoming, friendly and warm.
If you're on the Uists looking for a campsite/bunkhouse, don't go anywhere else, this place is wonderful!
