October 2003 Ant's Bash was our first taste of ‘rallying’ with the UKCS crowd, and I've posted elsewhere on the site about what a fantastic time was had by all. The site itself does seem a little run down, mainly due to the obvious previous use of the site as a WW2 airfield. Great for history buffs, who think they can still smell glycol & leather (like me!) When daylight hits the site through the trees though, it throws a different perspective on it all. The site is actually very pretty, and there are some nice level walks that aren't too strenuous for the kids. Ashbourne, being a cough and a spit away is good for shopping and the market there gives away the largest selection of plastic bags for the Bin Bag Challenge! There are numerous pubs that sell duvets and beer! And they open early on market days!! Just ask Tom… The site shop is on the small side, selling only the basics, and the on-site bar is a bit on the small side too, although we had use of the larger 'function room' to the rear of the bar. There’s also quite a large concert room on site which has the occasional live band on, which is great. It's a shame that this year's 'meet' at gateway coincides with the family holiday in France, or else we would be definitely returning to this site. All in all, a very friendly place to pitch your tent/caravan/trailer tent. And reasonably priced too! Some nice walks, stunning moorland on the doorstep just a short drive away, and many pretty villages hereabouts to visit too. If you come during the summer, try and coincide with the ‘well-dressing’ season.

August 2003 Gateway caravan park is a friendly peaceful site in a lovely location. it's also very cheap to camp there (£9 a night for 1 tent 1 car and upto 4 people!). we stayed in a tent and we went to the bottom of the field which was great and very quiet. The toilets were quite clean and the showers were fine, although it does cost 25p per token. The reception/shop is very small and doesnt sell very much so id say take as much food of your own as poss. There is a bar and a games room and there are water points all over the site. My one complaint was that there was quite a bit of litter where we pitched our tent, even though there are about 7 huge waste bins near reception! All in all an enjoyable visit and it was great that the site acepts dogs (50p per night) so we could take ours with us! I would definitely reccommend gateway if you're looking for a nice site close to ashbourne and the peaks.

July 2003 Although we were here as part of the UKCampsite.co.uk Derbyshire Meet 2003, I must admit I have struggled to find fault with this site.
On arrival Karen on Reception was extremely friendly and showed us where all the facilities were (including the bar!) and then walked us to our pitch. The pitches were nicely spaced out and many of them were close to trees, providing that ever important shade on those days. They all looked pretty level and the water points were well placed around the site so as not to have too far with the heavy water carrier.
We were put in the far corner of the site which was fantastic for us all, we were at the end of the road so we did not have the constant danger of cars traveling to their units and it also meant the kids could play freely and safely.
The site itself is at the very Southern point of the Peak District so if you wish to do some great hiking then it is a long car journey to the Peaks. Ashbourne is close where you will find everything you need, 2 supermarkets, restaurants, cash points etc etc. All the other parts of Derbyshire are accessible from here including Heights of Abraham in Matlock Bath (the cable cars in itself are well worth the journey), Buxton is accessible, many caverns and other places of interest are all a car journey away.
There are walks from the site but these are mainly flat and if you are a hiker I would suggest somewhere further into the Peaks would suit.
Dogs were welcome on site, as long as you keep them on a lead and under control, and they had a couple of toilet/shower blocks easily providing adequate amounts for all the people on site. They have a laundry room and pot wash area which all seemed clean and tidy but we did not use either in our few days here.
There is an on-site bar which serves all the best drinks including Stella, Strongbow, Guiness and a massive range of Alcopops etc. There is a shop on-site that sells the basics one needs when camping, bacon, eggs, milk, bread etc. Be warned though that the bar doesn't serve food.
Would I go again? yes I would but if I was a hiker then I would travel further into the Peaks and enjoy some more vigerous scenery.

29/05/03 - 01/06/03 Good site with plenty of space. Facilities a little basic, but adquate. Have to agree, would probably struggle if park very busy. Excellent dog walking, and v. close to Ashbourne.

30th May - 1st June 2003 Level site with shop, bar and gamesroom. The site looks to be an old airfield with both soft and hard standings. Great views from from camping fields. There are however only five gents toilets and showers, for a site that has a 200 pitch capacity, it does struggle at busy times. The showers take tokens (25p each), The token machine is on the outside of the showers!! The site has the potential and location to be very good, however on first glance the buildings do look slightly run down.
