We have visited this campsite every year for 3 years now, the first time we visited the site was dull and not very appealing, however the change has been remarkable.
There are still some things needing done, ie reception and the shop needs to be open more often as its very hard to get hold of anyone.
I have been trying to contact them for over a week now to book this years stay, we go every year to the Ashbourne Highland Gathering and now stay for 4 days and love it!
The kids, Abbie 5, Devan 4 and Jayden almost 2, have a blast and love the trampolines and play area and we simply cannot wait for Cap n Jacks to open.
The new shower block is lovely, and always kept clean althought the showers don't stay on for very long which is quite frustrating but you can't have everything.
The pitches are plenty big enough and quite well positioned and the outside in is lovely, although the prices are a bit on the high side.
We love Peak Gateway and will be returning again this year (if I can ever get hold of anyone in order to place my booking) and we are hoping for better weather this year to make our stay even more pleasant.
All in all a very nice campsite and one that keeps getting that little bit nicer each year.

We stayed at Peak Gateway in August for a week with friends, in two large family tents. Peak gateway is just outside the town of Ashbourne, which is convenient for local shops and supermarkets, such as Sainsbury’s, Somerfield and The Co-op. The entrance to the site is a tarmac road secured by a barrier. When we booked, we were asked to pay in full and a card key was sent in the post. The key will operate the barrier between 08:00 and 23:30. In the centre of the site, near the entrance barrier is what look like old military style buildings. The owners have done a good job of modernising these and this is where the bar, amusements, shop, reception and showers are. There is also another room called the Blenheim Room, which is used for special events. The shop is open twice a day for about two hours. As another reviewer has suggested, it looks more like a tuck shop than a place for camp essentials. We never visited, as it was never open when we tried. We never saw the reception open either, which is I assume why the barrier keys are posted out. There are also many paper signs stuck up with drawing pins giving a mobile number for emergencies. A large part of the site is for static caravans, there are also touring fields for caravans and a tent field. The tent field is at the back of the site and has a portakabin housing the toilets and two washing up sinks, with plenty of hot water. There are no showers on the camping field. The tent pitches are an excellent size and easily took our large family tent. When we booked we asked for an electric hook-up, we were told that these were not available. When we arrived, we understood why, the electrical hook ups are only on the touring fields and they don’t allow tents on there. This seems a little bizarre as they allow trailer tents on the touring field. The last time I went to a site with this kind of rigid separation I was a teenager! As mentioned, the showers are in the centre of the site, which is a short walk from the camping field. These have been finished to a very high standard and are kept very clean. What lets them down is that they are only open from 08:00 to 20:00, which means if you fancy having a shower after a long day out, you can’t. We found this especially frustrating for keeping the children clean. They other annoying thing was the limited time the push button gave you and the lack of power. There is however two old showers in the old toilet block next door, which are open 24hrs. We preferred to use these as they had a control tap and were more powerful. Although these did require modernisation and a lick of paint. The chemical toilet disposal point was also in the central area, which meant a strenuous walk from the camp field with a full toilet and as another reviewer has mentioned, this facility is in the washing up area. We visited the bar, with limited opening times, which was pleasant and had a separate children’s room, however if there is an event on in the Blenheim Room, the bar is closed and there is a charge to enter the event. The events appear to happen at weekends. We were not interested in the event (disco) and didn't want to pay £3 just to buy a beer! Conclusion: A clean site with modern facilities and large tent pitch sizes. The showers could be open longer and have longer times on the push buttons. The site requires more staff to allow the shop, reception and bar to open longer hours. All in all, nothing too major to complain about, however we will not be returning, because the site is simply not our “cup of tea”.

Great site. I liked the fact they post you the barrier fob so that you can enter site and need not bother booking in etc. I don't normally like set pitches but there was plenty of room. The tent field had wonderful views. Toilet/shower block very new and it was a pleasure taking a shower! This site is very child orientated, there's a playground and inside area for children to "hang out". While we were there they had rock climbing, archery, bouncy castles and there are 2 trampolines there all the time. It is a fantastic location. The walk into Ashbourne is well worth it where there a number of good pubs and restaurants. We will definitely be returning next year.

We have just spent a week here and had a fantastic time! Our 2 kids are 6 and 10 and they loved it! the site is clean and the staff very friendly. The down side is that because of all the earlier rain the site was very quiet so to say it was peak season not many people were here and that reflected on the facilities which werent open very often at all. The pub opened every night but only till there was someone wanting a drink when there was no one about they closed, some nights before 9 which was dissappointing. I only saw the shop open a couple of times in the evening which didnt really matter as it didnt really stock proper provisions anyway mainly sweets for the kids. The kids loved bubbles and the park which was very good, and the new shower blocks were brilliant. The tent pitch we were on was no 1 and I would say was the best pitch on the site as it was nearest to the toilets and washing up sinks and the pitches were huge of all the campsites weve been to these were definitely the biggest. Loads of room for the kids to play and not disturb other campers, also the pitches were nice and flat. We were lucky because the week we stayed the weather was gorgeous which made the holiday! the site was just outside of Ashbourne which is a lovely town. All in all we would definitely come back here just hope all the rest of the facilities like the cafe and the blenheim room to be open as we never got to sample these.

We had a fantastic time here, its great for familes. The management were very friendly and helpful. The new shower block is now finished and what a job. Great. Just a tip though if your like me and need your like the wife and need your straighteners then the old shower block has an electrical point. We have a 4 year old and he loved the children's play area. The flooring is cut up black rubber tubes so great if your little one falls, but not so good if you want to keep them clean. they get covered in black dust. But don't let this put you off (showers are free). There is also a room called Bubbles which is really for the older kids. Arcade and dance type games. The added bonus for the parent is the bar, you can watch the kids playing while havin' a nice pint. They also have a shop and cafe, which unfortunately we didn't visit, but the cafe got a good review from most of the people we met. One of the many plus points to the site apart from being friendly is the generous pitch size, we have a Diablo 900 and have been charged for a double pitch on some sites, but this one had ample room without the extra charge. We will be going back.

The only site in the area with availability for whitsun. We booked for the week for ourselves and the weekend for other family and were required to pay in full at time of booking - £80 for the 3 night bank holiday weekend made it the most expensive site we've ever stayed on! We were sent a barrier card through the post and a plan showing our pitches so we didn't need to check in on arrival. A grim collection of unattractive old industrial buildings greeted us and housed the games room/shop/reception/pub and also the shower block. Plus points were: site in good location, pitches reasonably flat. We probably had the best pitches in our field with lovely view and plenty of room for kids to play away from other campers. New shower block (open 8am to 8pm), toilets and showers kept very clean. Minus points were: portacabin 24 hour toilets (after 8pm) not great for washing in the evening. The men in our party chose to use the old shower block as the showers were much better - the new showers are very weak and short time on push button. Shop sold mostly sweets - not much in way of basic provisions or camping equipment (e.g. Gas canisters), we were asked to pay £1.10 for a pint of milk! Had to go off site to get provisions for breakfast. Didn't manage to find reception open - the opening hours stated 9-11am but we tried on 3 mornings before 11 and it was shut. We would have liked to ask about the local area - where to buy gas canisters, restaurants, the 'numerous walks' etc. The only member of staff we came across during the entire stay was the teenager manning the shop. There was a mobile number pinned up in lots of places 'in case of emergency'. Unusually, the games room didn't attract our younger members and we didn't use the pub. The site just had a generally unwelcoming feel to it. Overall, the site probably suits people coming for a short weekend away who want entertainment provided. It's not so great for tourists wanting a longer stay and a comfortable base from which to explore the area. We would visit the area again but would not choose this site.

This was our first camping trip with our folding camper and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The site is apparantly in the process of renovation as there are some old buildings there, but that does not spoil the overall experience or stay. The toilet/shower block seemed new and was very clean. Free showers too! Shop is small, but had the basics. Pub lively on the weekend, but all goes quiet after 11.30pm. No vehicles allowed on site after then. Reception wasn't always open, but a telephone number was available if you needed assistance. Playground equipment was well maintained and suitable for children upto age 10. My girls loved the trampolines. Lots of beautiful countryside nearby - great for those who like to walk. Ashbourne and Bakewell for those who like to shop! Overall good experience, well kept park and would definitely visit again.

We have just returned from a very wet but lovely weekend at Peak Gateway. We did read the reviews before we arrived and can honestly say this site is what people say, brilliant. It is very clean and the new toilet blocks are lovely. Even though is was very wet, we still found lots to do. Ashbourne is only a short drive away. The only criticism of this site is the entertainment, there was a charge of £3.00 per adult and £1.00 per child, which we thought was a bit of a cheek bearing in mind that for 3 nights it cost us £80.00, so not a cheap site (perhaps we are paying for the new toilet/shower block). We think this should be included in the price. Other than that we would definitely return again

Peak Gateway has definitely improved since our last visit. The new showers were very good. The entertainment was excellent. However, we were with some friends who had a motor-home and as we were erecting their new tent style awning, were told through an open window of a passing vehicle that tents were not allowed and we were to take it down. The owner did not get out of his vehicle to inspect the awning and wouldn't listen to us that it was infact an awning and not a tent. We dutifully took it down. Later, I did manage to persuade him that in fact it was an awning and he reluctantly allowed it to be erected. We found his attitude disappointing.
Also we were horrified that in the washing up room was a toilet for chemical waste disposal and that overflowed one morning. This we found disgusting and wondered if it contravened public health laws. However we did not complain as we had the means to wash up in our units but felt quite sorry for the people in tents needing to use the washing up facilities. I think a lot of work has been done to improve the site, but doubt that we would return.

Just been to this park over May Bank Holiday and what a lovely site. I`ve got a 9 man tent and still plenty of room on the pitch.(the pitches are well spaced out. The new shower blocks had just been finished and are excellent! And there are other toilets dotted about the site. The kids loved the games room although it would help if there was a change machine.(thats just me nick picking). The bar has a adults only part and a family room and the prices are very reasonable. We went to the Blenheim room for the disco and live music Star Star (who were really good). Have to pay for live music £3 for ad and £1 for the kids, but did`nt mind.
On the sunday the owner put on a fun day for the kids (which they loved!). With rock climbing, archery, bouncy castle, trampolining and the best of all the grass carts! Each item was a £1 each. Got talking to the owner and he said there are more plans in the future i:e a membership for next year (I think he said it would be a free membership). No matter what time or place he was there! From dancing in the disco to sorting out the fun day and he was very cheerful and helpful. This seemed to rub off on all his staff as well. Even though this was a Bank Holiday it was`nt packed and everything was calm. We will come here again in the near future as we thoroughly enjoyed this park.
