Just returned from a weekend of camping. I made the booking over the phone for my husband, daughter age 3 and myself in one tent and then our friend his partner and their child aged 4 in their tent, both for EHU it was £50 per tent, which I thought a little steep but also they requested a £25 per couple as they said the booking was a group booking, though the £25 was refunded at the end I still thought it was a lot to pay for two nights.

The pitch sizes were very large and all clearly marked, however the shower block was a long walk away next to the static caravans, which does seem rather silly as most statics have showers so those occupants would not require a shower as most tent campers do.

Saying that they were clean, downside it was push button showers, which I know is better for the environment, but please make it so the shower stays on for a least a few seconds so not having to stand with hand on the button, which can prove to be very difficult when your child is showering with you and they can not reach the shower button.

The toilet blocks near the tent field are supposed to be in process of improving, arriving on the Friday and left on the Sunday I never saw anyone working on them, surely camping season is upon us they should be working on them around the clock.

Play area the children loved but the enclosed trampolines zips were broke and management has put up a note stating zips should be fastened when child on them, so maybe management should repair the zips.

All staff we saw very friendly, enjoyed the weekend but overall think it is overpriced and if charging the amount they do then maybe improve the site to accommodate campers more.

This was our second visit to this site and it will be our last. Bit of a mix up when we arrived, but the chap dealing with us said he had 500 people to sort out, we were shown to our pitch by one of the taxis.

Good points

Good size pitch, level with good grass

Close to Ashbourne, Tissington, Dovedale etc

The pub is handy but needs an adult only area

Bad points

Toilet block still being refurbished, should be priority at start of season not on going

Only 2 washing up sinks, saw someone washing up in disabled toilet this is wrong and needs to be addressed there is plenty of room at the front of toilet block on what seems a waste of space really

we had 8 showers over the weekend at various times and all of them only had a trickle of water, we could stand the push button but the water pressure is rubbish, and a long way to walk

Saw dogs not on leads. Lots of ball games. And people driving too fast, lots of rules but no one follows them

We paid £25 deposit each tent because our booking was 2 tents and classed as a group booking. We paid £50 deposit for 2 gazebo's, apparently this is to stop parties and noise after 11pm, it doesn't work we could still hear talking and laughing at 3am.

All that said there was a nice atmosphere and lots of Pirates having a good time.

There are better sites with better facilities in this area.

This is our third visit to Peak Gateway whilst attending a rally and I must say that there are signs of improvement year upon year. The staff were courteous as always and went out of their way to help us when we found that we were supposed to be in a different field to the rest of our party.

The toilets near the rally field were basic but kept clean and the children’s play area is good but the arcade was, to be blunt, a disgrace. Half the machines didn’t work the pool table was more like a rubbish bin and the whole cabin was dirty which is a shame as the site must have spent a small fortune in purchasing the cabin.

The shower block was at the back of the reception area but the previous reviews have spoken about this, the only thing I will add is that the push button showers only last for about 20 seconds before they need pushing again which is a bit too short.

The biggest problem with this site has got to be

• The lack of hot water in any of the pot wash areas. It didn’t matter what time of the day we went or which pot wash we used we never got anywhere near to hot water. Luke warm at best was only achieved on 2 of the 8 occasions.

• More importantly though is the broken zips on the trampolines. Two of these trampolines are placed on the paved patio area and I know that at least one child was injured and had to go to hospital during our stay.

Overall we enjoy going back each year for the event but I would not ever visit this site for any other reason as the facilities don’t warrant the high costs charged for normal pitches. The discounted price we get on the rally days is about the right price for what you get.

First visit to this site and on the whole it was a good weekend.

Good points.

Very good pitch size, had plenty of room for our van/awning and car.

Nice play area for the kids including 3 free trampolines

Every member of staff we spoke to were very friendly and pleasant.

10 mins walk from ashbourne and 20 mins to Derby by car.

Very clean site.

Areas for improvement.

We have a 18 month old baby girl and were disappointed to find there were no baby changing facilities, we had to take her into the disabled toilets and change her on our knee.

There were not enough water/waste points around the site, We had a long way to walk with our waste and felt it easier to put it in the car to take it there.

There was only 1 main shower and toilet block and it was a long walk from where we were, they were in the process of building a toilet block on the tent field but this was not in a clean condition and had no showers.

Our electric tripped every hour, it drove us crazy having to go out and flick the trip in the rain, we only had the TV and lights on but it kept tripping.

We were disappointed to find that the evening entertainment came at an extra cost of £3 per person.

On the whole a nice clean site with very friendly staff but at a cost of £34 per night and extra for entertainment with such little facilities I would have to say it was too expensive to return.

Stayed at this site over the jubilee bank holiday and had a great time. We found the pitches were nicely spaced out so the children had room to play outside the tent. There is a main block with pub, cafe and little shop. Hubby had a cooked breakfast in the cafe one morning and said it was the best he'd ever had ! Children are well catered for with trampolines and a play park. For older children there is a games room with pool table etc.

We found the staff here very friendly, the site owner is always about and happy to help. The bad points to this site is I felt the toilet facilities in the tent field could be better and you have to go to the main block for a shower which with toddlers in tow was a bit off pain.

The showers in the main block were very clean but found you had to keep your hand on the button to keep it on which when you're trying to shower two toddlers made it hard work. A family shower room would be good so both parents can go in. Also there were no baby changing facilities which surprised me being a very family orientated site.

Despite those little niggles we had a great time and will definitely stay here again.

Went for the mayday bank holiday weekend and was charged £106 for 2 adults and a child for 3 nights which I though was a bit overpriced even for a bank holiday.

On arrival the sign directs you to reception but then goes to a dead end and a shop but the reception is actually far into the park next to the pub.

The camping field is at the far end of the park and is ok. Seems to be a limited amount of electric pitches at one end of the field and the rest, approx 3/4 of it, was empty.

There are some toilets in a portable cabin style building for the campers which are a work in progress according to the sign on the door, and they do need some work, but for a shower you had to walk to the far end of the park, behind the pub. The showers themselves were pretty poor, warm enough but little more than a dribble at best. There is a pub and a big hall with a well stocked bar. There is also a cafe but we didn't use it.

The walk into Ashbourne is down a steep hill along a busy road but the town is a lovely place. There is however a free shuttle bus to town and back about 2 or 3 times a day.

Dovedale is just a short ride away. All in all not a bad site, but needs a bit of improvement on the basics.

For anyone who has not been to Peak Gateway for a while much change has been implemented!

The site is now dominated by statics and seasonal pitches and the tourers have been moved to a separate new pitch area much further away from the facilities.

Many of these pitches are on a sloping road, not steep but enough to make it impossible to level your van side to side without some jacking.

The main concern to be aware of is that they have now for some reason made all the traffic go in and out the same gate which is only one vehicle wide.

It was quiet on my visit but I had to stop half way through the barrier as cars around a blind corner were trying to get out - never ever seen anything like that before in eight years of caravanning! At busy times this may be chaos. Signs still direct you to the original entrance gate on arrival and once there, you have to reverse your rig back down the road to the first right turn - its just not been thought out at all.

Additional facilities are now going to be required following all the expansion. There are still only two loos in the main mens shower block.

Overall the park is as pleasant as ever and the on site bar is very friendly. They have established a huge tent field that looks well laid out and some have hook ups, the tenters will love it I am sure.

It's in a good position for Ashbourne but has not got the direct Tissington trail link that Callow Top has.

The problem is that it is £28 a night if you use an awning and at that price there are dozens of luxury top 100 parks that for me offering a more luxurious touring caravan experience.
Management response: Site Owners comments - Statics and the old barrier system have been in place for the past seven years and have never received any complaints before, the electronic security barrier is key to the security of caravans on site. The wooden gate referred to by the reviewer is opened during busy periods to facilitate arrivals onto site and for anyone who expresses a wish not have to reverse a short distance. However an additional electronic barrier has now been fitted in place of the wooden gate to create a one way system alleviating the perceived problem highlighted in the last review. A welcome area has also been created close to the new barrier where arrival paperwork will be placed during busy periods and an intercom system has also been added to allow new arrivals barrier access during quiet periods without having to walk to reception.

A new tent field toilet building has been constructed for this season to improve ablution facilities.

We are striving to improve our campsite and actively listen to all feedback good and bad

Lovely site, went with granchildren for Bonfire Night very well organised. Shower block and toilets near to the bar area are spotlessly clean. Five minutes by car into Ashbourne and about 20 mins to Alton Towers. Pub which serves food and a very good breakfast can be got in the cafe next door. Large function room which was open on Bonfire night. Would recommend. Owner and staff very helpful and pleasant. The view from our pitch was superb, small amount of traffic noise from road nearby but not enough to bother about. We will be definitely returning.

On the positive side we couldn't fault the entertainment facilities. The pub provided cheap tasty meals & there were pool tables, football game etc to amuse the kids. There was a games room plus trampoline outside which was also good. In summer there is laso entertainment on saturdays.

The main shower block was clean and modern and the cubicles were roomy with enough space so that your clothes didn't get wet.

The big thing that let this site down was the prefab toilet block near the tent field. No showers, paint peeling, floor coming up. Really let down image of the otherwise very good site. I would really like to see this refurbished before I would come back.

Great site though and near to Ashbourne, Peak District etc.

We are new to caravanning and had our first trip to Peak Gateway.

The showers and toilets were lovely and clean, the only problem was the showers didn't stay on very long, you had to continually keep your hand on the push button, which was hard when trying to shower our little girl.

The views from our hard pitch were amazing. There is some road noise, but nothing that troubled us. All of the staff are very friendly and helpful.

The cafe did very tasty breakfast until 11am, as did the pub in the evenings, the meals were great value, they had a very good children's meal menu as well.

Our 3 year old girl loved the large trampoline and the children's bubbles bar area, a little ride and a few sweet machines for her. Ashbourne was a lovely little village with a few shops.

We will definitely be visiting this site again in the future for a long weekend.
