Being based in the West Midlands, the Shropshire Hills is probably my favourite destination for a quick 'get away from it all' trip! It is convenient, has stunning scenery, and it's fair share of great campsites! Foxholes Castle Campsite on the outskirts of the small market town of Bishops Castle is no exception!
Located on a hill, the site has almost 360 degree views of the Shropshire countryside, and comprises 3 separate camping fields as well as a newly completed bunkhouse and static caravan. There are no designated pitches (and no hook ups), just find yourself a nice spot! Although the main field is on a slope, it is so big that you should have no problem finding a flat pitch even in busy times. You are assured a friendly welcome from the owners and their dog, but hide all of your food if you leave your tent as we had a great time watching him crawling under flysheets and stealing food! We returned one afternoon to find our box of mini muffins empty!
The location is fairly exposed but some protection from the wind is provided by the perimeter hedgerows. Facilities are fairly basic comprising of 3 wet rooms (male, female and disabled) which have a toilet, sink and shower. There is also a kitchen area that offers free use of a fridge / freezer as well as washing up facilities.
Bishops Castle is a pleasant 10 minute walk away through a field, and has some nice little shops, a small supermarket, a few restaurants (The Ganges Indian highly recommended!) and around 6 pubs (2 of which have their own onsite brewery). We ate at the Three Tuns where the food was excellent and good value for money!
Overall, a cracking campsite in a great location!

I had heard about the campsite from a friend who had stayed there previously. Having visited Bishops castle on a couple of occasions I was pleased to hear that this campsite had opened last summer so was keen to stay and check it out. On arrival the place was thriving, being a bank holiday, which in my book is always a good sign. We pitched our tents at the end of the field and took in the amazing views!
The owners were very pleasant and helpful in giving information about local going ons and places to eat (they also kindly lent us a couple of tent pegs when we realised that we didnt have enough!)
The facilities were really good and to have access to the use of a free fridge is something that you rarely get at most campsites. Also the wet rooms are a good idea for familys with small children who would otherwise struggle.I did however, hear of one person complain about the lack of water. This I think, is a very minor thing due to the amount of people visiting on that particular weekend (isnt this also part of the camping experience?!) The recycling area was great and its nice to be given the opportunity to do this, which again you dont often encounter at many campsites.
I would like to thank the owners for having a food van running, it was pouring it down by the Sunday and we were very pleased to not have to cook on the trangia!
All in all, a great place! I would like to wish the owners all the best and we'll definitely be returning again soon.

On booking a pitch I was informed of the large numbers that they were expecting, hence I was aware that for a shower, toilet etc. there would be a queue, but on arrival this was not a problem the toilet facillities were plentiful, and the new shower block clean and always avaliable within a short period of time. I discoverd a trick though! often when it seems that the toilet roll has run out, if you open the holder there usually is one that has got stuck inside!
The recycling facilities here were vast. A positive in my books, but I can see how some could become annoyed by having to seperate their rubbish out.
The size of the campsite and the suituation is beautiful, with 360' views and walks and footpaths in every direction, which I took full advantage of, in addition I noted that the footpath into bishop's castle was in the process of being renovated so that the styles were being replaced with gates, very pratical for both carring the shopping back and for the return from the six pubs in town. Despite the large quantity of people on the campsite during this bank holliday there was more than adiquate space, so pack a football and and rounders set when comming.
This campsite is a favourite of mine, I will definatly be returning later in the year, I would recomend it to all great outdoor lovers, especially families, I know mine certainly enjoyed it!

It is a thoroughly enjoyable site which we have actually used several times. It is spacious with a large field for tents (this must be 5 or 6 acres), a 'touring field' for caravans and motorcaravans (15 units). There is even a special field for Caravan Club CL users. Water and fire points are dotted about the camping areas.
There are wonderful panoramic views over the glorious South Shropshire hill country and the friendly little market town of Bishops Castle is just a few minutes walk away over the fields. The town has five or six pubs, two of them brewing their own real ale and numerous good places to eat, plus a range of grocery and food shops. There are even some good book and antique shops.
It is a simple rural site (no electric hook ups - be green, get a solar panel) and the owners are a very helpful local couple who go out of their way to make campers welcome. It is especially good for families with children and dogs as there is so much space in which to run and play safely.
There are three good clean wet rooms (shower, toilet and basin) plus another seperate toilet block, a small kitchen and an area set aside for recycling.
I realise the present facilities are likely to get crowded at bank holiday times but the site is only a year old and I think the Blyths were unfair to make so much of this. Anybody going camping at a peak period must expect some crowding and delays, especially at the busy hours of the day.
I have been told that plans are afoot to build a another toilet block plus a small bothy for walkers and I expect that there will be other improvements as time goes by.
We will definitely be going back

This was a beautiful place though when booked we did so as the number of units said 15. When I queried this over the weekend was told this was for the number of caravans allowed! The facilities were inadequate for the number of tents (I didn't have a shower for the whole weekend (eurghhhh). Saying this, we did have adequate space around our tents for the children to play & the owners were friendly. We really like the area but this camp site is definitely not our first choice to go back to.

Just come back from 3 nights at this campsite. It is in a lovely location with good views and friendly owners.
The campsite details say there are 15 pitches and I saw the previous reviews about the amount of toilets and showers and thought well if there's only 15 pitches it should be OK. If there were only 15 pitches it would be fine, in reality there must have been around 100 tents and caravans there this weekend and to say the facilities were stretched would be an understatement!
I can't blame the site owner for fitting in all the tents, there was still plenty of space as he has lots of fields and luckily we were prepared with a bucket and toilet chemicals.
As a previous reviewer says, there was a catering van on site for breakfast and teatimes. We didn't use it so can't comment on how good the food was but certainly a good idea.
The walk into town is nice on the way there but not so good loaded with shopping on the way back as it is uphill. Town is small, I was suprised how quiet it was too it is very quaint with narrow streets.
We had a Chinese takeaway (apparently recently new owners) last night which was very good with free fortune cookies for the children and free prawn crackers. There is a small co-op for supplies and an Indian that we didn't sample, but smelt good.
If the weather had been kinder we would have had a better time but that's not the fault of the site. I would return but until the owners put in more facilities, not at a bank holiday.

Brilliant site and very friendly.
I booked last minute for bank holiday weekend (ever organised!), I was told that the site was busy but they could fit me in. I half expected everyone to be crammed in really close together, but when I got there I was pleasantly surprised.
I was able to find my own quiet pitch out of the way, so my Rotti puppy wasn't constantly trying to play with everyone in sight! I pitched right near a stile (part of the Shropshire Way), so was very convenient for walking Tia whenever she needed to go!
All of the staff were friendly, and they leant me a local book of walks around Bishops Castle (alas I still got lost but hell I can get lost in John Lewis!)
On site they have a breakfast van, serving beautiful sausage sandwiches, and in the evening the jacket potato with chilli was damn fine too!

Great Campsite with very helpful & friendly owners. They run a food van near the entrance, though we had already packed our supplies for the weekend.
There is a huge field with great views all the way round. Could do with perhaps a few more toilets when it gets busy though.
It's only a 10 minute walk down to the village. Bishops Castle itself is pretty and very none touristy, but with 6 pubs. There are 2 brew pubs, The Six Bells, where you can have a pint of Big Nev off the man himself, and The Three Tuns where the food is apparently excellent (though we could not get in as it was fully booked) We went to the Indian instead which was pretty good. There is also a nice looking deli and 2 butchers if you forgot to pack your provisions.
All in all comes highly recommended if you want a less touristy place, but with everything you could need

Gently sloping main field with fantastic views. No shop or clubhouse just the sounds of bleating sheep and the local cricket match - bliss.
The owners and their daughter were very friendly - as were their dogs - our children loved playing 'fetch' with Jess and Jenga, but beware, these dogs do not tire easily and will play all day :-) The owners even bought us a replacement football from the local car boot to replace the one that Jenga had burst (our fault), which was very kind and thoughtful.
Three wet room showers; male, female and disabled. In excellent condition. Can't help wondering why the mirrors are positioned in such a strange place though.
Recycling facilities on site and free use of the fridge near the showers was also a nice touch.
The walk to Bishop's Castle is a must as is the local brew. We tried the food from the Indian & Chinese takeaways but found both rather bland.
A very relaxing 3 days - We will be back!

Lovely weekend on this site. Went into village through fields to shops and collected Fish and Chips on our way back to site, they were wonderful. Spent the afternoon watching gliders taking off and watching a cricket match at the same time.
Wonderful views of Long Mynd and Glider station. The owners were very friendly and so were their dogs.
Will be returning.
