We gambled on the April weather for our first weekend camping trip of the year, with a large group of friends, our children and a few dogs.
Foxholes was very easy to find by using their postcode in the sat nav. We were greeted immediately and advised that we could pitch up on any of the four fields. It was early in the season and there was a lot of space. We chose the field nearest to the toilet block, which was pretty level and had enough space for us to get six families in next to each other.
This was probably the best ground I've ever experienced for putting tent pegs in - no problem at all.
The site itself is fairly basic, but that suited our needs. It was great that they allow you have fires and supply bags of logs.
The toilet block was very clean and well maintained. All the hot water is supplied by solar power and was adequately hot for washing in. I'm not sure how the supply of hot water might hold up when the site is busier.
There is a little room available with a large table and chairs which could be used for eating or playing games if it rained. It also contained a fridge and a freezer for everybody's use, as well as a few things for the kids to play with, such as cricket set, bats and balls etc, plus a number of books.
The Shropshire Way passes through the camp site, and leads down into Bishops Castle. It is a nice walk into the town which takes about 15 minutes. Take a torch if you are coming back after dark.
Bishops Castle itself is a lovely little town with a number of independent shops, cafes and restaurants. I recommend the Poppy House for breakfast / lunch or dinner. We also enjoyed visiting the Three Tuns, which boasts the oldest licensed brewery in the UK and serves a number of it's own beers. It was a family friendly place which had a few board games stacked in a corner for the kids to play with.
The second night we were there we were lucky enough to get a clear sky and a wonderful view of the milky way, which reminded us city folk how beautiful the night sky is when you get away from the light pollution.

Stayed one night, good recycling, clean toilet/shower block, very slight slope on tent field, will use the site again when in the area, only hiccup was the road works in Bishops Castle which meant a 4 mile detour not the fault of the site and is well sign posted to the site, footpath to Bishops Castle needs a torch but easy to follow

Booked by e-mail for two nights, Tuesday and Wednesday. As it was the week of ex-Bertha, we asked if we could add a day at the end depending on the weather. Swift and polite replies, this would be fine.
The road through Bishop's Castle is very steep, and Foxholes Castle's entry is well marked by a hanging sign. Reception is in the lovely looking manor house. We arrived and the owner appeared almost immediately to check us in. Nice friendly lady, gave us a leaflet detailing the walk into Bishop's Castle and a pass for the car, with the site rules on the other side. I liked this, as it ensures each camper knows the rules without sticking posters everywhere. EHU available if needed.
Fires are allowed, but you must ask permission. Best to do this before you pitch, or you'll have to come back, like we did. Fire baskets available for hire, logs are £3 a bag. You can use your own stuff as long as you take care of the grass.
We were left to choose our own pitch, after the owner told us the merits of each field. There was plenty of space to choose from, on this rainy weekday afternoon. I think the filed we choose was called the Yurt Field, but was occupied by only one other tent. Glorious views of the Shropshire Hills, great open expanses of sky, which was just the job, as this was our annual Perseid Meteor Shower Spotting Trip! We found a level spot without too much trouble, parts of the site are sloping, but this is a hilly region so should be expected. The site seems very well drained, despite several heavy showers, we didn't get muddy.
There is a great little common room, with a comfy sofa, large table to sit round and fridge and freezer for campers to use. Also bookshelves, information about the local area, and even waterproofs and an air bed pump to borrow. Just outside here is the washing up area, two large clean sinks and plenty of space for your crocks. Unusually, the taps aren't over the sinks, buckets are provided to transfer your water.
There is a real emphasis here on recycling and ecology. Water for showers is solar heated. There is a large recycling centre, and one of the site rules is that you MUST recycle.
Showers and toilets were large and clean, if a bit utilitarian, like a public swimming pool changing area. Plenty of hooks in the wet room style showers, we prefer a cubicle or screen so there is a bit of dry floor. Plenty of loo roll every time we went and no unpleasant surprises. Bear in mind when you pitch how far the one toilet block is, families might find it a struggle during the night.
No road noise, very quiet and peaceful site. The weather was changeable, and watching the hills change as the rain swept over them was very relaxing. Luckily, it dried up, we lit our fire and watched the skies for a few hours, spotting 50+ meteors, and the supermoon was like a floodlight when it peeped from behind the clouds.
We drove to Welshpool to go on the Narrow Gauge railway, all day rover £13 each and very good value. Well kept line, lovely stations and professional staff. We checked the train times, and then walked in Welshpool for breakfast. Plenty of cafes to choose from, we had nice paninis and hot chocolate at the Coco Lounge, where the staff were chatty and pleasant. The train was a picturesque 40 minute trip to Llanfair where there wasn't much to do. The chippie was closed, most pubs were closed. We could have had a little riverside walk but it was showery, so we walked up past the church and found the Goat Hotel has a public bar. They served us some chips and garlic bread, despite the fact the kitchen had closed half an hour before. Lovely friendly family run pub, friendly locals too.
Back to the train and a nice run home to Welshpool.
We packed on Thursday morning as the forecast wasn't great and we didn't want a wet pack up. Of course, it turned out to be the best day of the lot, so we spent the day in Shrewsbury, a fantastic place with a beautiful river, tons of charity shops to browse, plenty of pubs and restaurants to suit all tastes. Also a large Millet's.
We would visit again, and hope for drier weather to walk into Bishop's Castle (15 minutes) to use the six pubs!

This was our fifth visit to Foxholes and once again we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Camping on the hillside with wonderful panoramic views and having access to very comfortable wet rooms and a wooden building housing a fridge and freezer as well as washing up facilities under cover is, for us, an ideal camping experience.
Wendy and Chris always welcome us warmly and we look forward to our next visit

We chose this campsite for it's panoramic views from the top tent field as we wanted somewhere picturesque to watch the sun rise and set on the Summer Solstice. It served this purpose very well and the glorious sunny weather was a bonus. We spent more time on site than we normally do as we tend to camp as a means to explore. Foxholes feels like a million miles from civilisation which was lovely for a weekend but would put me off staying any longer. However we wandered into Bishop's Castle and came back to fly kites so there was enough to keep us occupied. We also visited Powis Castle which was a good way to spend a few hours after checking out.
I liked the Eco ethos of the campsite but it's not too in your face if Eco isn't your thing; as far as the user is concerned using the toilets and showers is just the same as anywhere else. I showered late afternoon on a hot day and the water was suitably warm.
The owner was really welcoming on arrival and suitably proactive when I went to enquire as to the minimum spacing distances after a family pitched too close to us. The onwers are obviously very passionate about Foxholes and have a lovely set up to show for it.

This was a cracking campsite. We arrived in the pouring rain, and discovered to our delight that there was a small common room we could hide out in until the heavens abated. There was a pleasing lack of condescending notices around the campsite, just a nicely illustrated map, and useful signs to indicate recycling, though they could do with a sign on the bathrooms. It's the building next to the common room, btw.
The site has a couple of different fields, we stayed in the 'half acre pasture' which was very cosy and close to the bathrooms.
Rain was very heavy the weekend we stayed, but the high ground meant there was very little water logging.
The bathrooms have plenty of showers that are very clean, and appear to be powered by solar heating panels, which, to my surprise, didn't run out of hot water. The only problem with the bathroom was the auto stop taps are really hard to press down, and don't stay on for long at all, so you might need to accompany any preteens to the bathroom, as they're probably not going to be able to press them down.
I have to mention bishops castle as well, which is a gorgeous little town, with 4 great pubs, and some very tempting looking cafés too. We even saw a traction engine, which appeared to just be out for a Sunday drive!

Just arrived home from a 3 night stay. We arrived early (10. 40am) but were greeted immediately by the male owner who was quite busy but stopped to welcome us. His wife soon came and took over and showed us the 3 fields where we could choose where we wanted to pitch, We were also shown the toilets and 'family' room (fridge, freezer, table, sofa and plug socket all available in a summer house)The toilet block was always clean and the showers warm, they operated on a push button but were free! The site was quiet and only a short walk into bishops castle. The pubs were good especially the three tuns which did an amazing stout. We stopped at the Chinese on the way back to the tent from town, it only took about 10 minutes at a brisk walk (with a 9 year old!)and the food was freshly cooked so plenty warm enough when we got back. The owners went an extra mile and organised an Easter egg hunt for Easter Sunday which my daughter promptly declared was the biggest ever. It was free to take part and they received a creme egg which made the day. All in all a good for value site well worth a visit. Lots to do in the surrounding areas. Acton Scott historic farm, Ludlow, Clun, Cardingmill valley, Stokesay Castle all within 45 minutes drive and all worth a visit!

I'm sorry to say we just got home from our three night stop at Foxholes camp site.
What a well run site, we were met as soon as we got to the site and told all we needed to know about the site. We were told we could choose where to put our trailer tent which I think is nice. Not only was there very clean toilets/ showers but it uses rain water warmed with solar panels. The site isnt over crowded an we were surprised to see it had the fully booked sign up as there was so much room around us. All in all we loved the peace and quiet and would definitely recommend to other campers

I really liked this campsite. Lovely views over the Shropshire hills and the site as a whole was great.
Like the fact they encourage recycling.
We had no issues with getting a shower or queuing for washing up.
Friendly welcome and always there to help, didn't rip you off with the price of a bag of logs either as I have experienced elsewhere, £3 I thought was fair enough.
Bishops Castle is nice and the beer and cider is top drawer!
